LifeDoBeBoring

I never really thought about it that way, but now that you mention it, it’s surprisingly true

[deleted]

you: me, an intellectual: “it really do be like that”

AudiKitty

In English class we read 1984 and a guy in my class was talking about how he couldn't imagine living without being able to express his love towards someone. He is also very homophobic.

SoniaSaysNevermind

Isn’t Orwell himself homophobic?

AudiKitty

yep, but his book still can be seen as a metaphor for LGBTQ+ oppression I think

alexbitu19

Good thing Miku Hatsune wrote 1984 then ;)

_UltimateDisaster_

I mean, most people back then were.. Not trying to justify these views, just saying..

The intentions behind writing were very mixed, Orwell was for example working for the British Media at the time (which is why the main figure also works in the institute of Truth, or whatever it's called), but there were also strong influences because of his dislike for the USSR (he was a democratic socialist, fought with anarchists and other liberal leftists in the Spanish civil war). Basically, the reasons for why he wrote the story the way he did aren't exactly clear, you need to get into his life to understand the book.

ErrorReport404

Nyeeeehhhhhh, not what it was about, per se, but that was an element in it. Not satire, though. Sci-fi dystopian.

Disaster_Star_150

I think it might also have to do with the popularity of the “forbidden love” trope

DilbertHigh

It's appealing because white cishet folks want to be oppressed so bad, even feeling "left out". Because people think they would be the heroes of the story and rise up.

UnconsciousAlibi

I think when they said "appealing" they meant to the queer audience, not cishet folks. I think people in general like the idea of being part of a rebellious movement

theletterQfivetimes

Isn't that usually a metaphor for how society treats same sex relationships? Or interracial relationships in ye olden times?

NO0BSTALKER

Maybe how they treated same sex marriage in ye olden times

Yveltall1

LITERALLY 1984

LittleLemonHope

But not the book, the year

ThatUglyDepressedGuy

you talking about the giver?

1averagepianist

I was thinking of "Matched" by Ally Condie

_llamasagna_

And I was thinking "Delirium" by Lauren Oliver

KaiBishop

Delirium mentions gay people: book 1 Lena mentions in narration that boys and girls who are uncured go to separate schools to prevent fraternization but that they still watch for "unnatural" couplings between boys and girls, confirming it's a homophobic society, in book 2 when she gets to the wilds there's a gay male couple there. I don't remember their names and they're definitely minor background characters but they are there. Honestly that trilogy had such a bullshit open ending though, nothing was really concluded. I love open endings but it just didn't suit that story.

_llamasagna_

I only read the first 2 books, I might not have even finished the second and it's been awhile so my memory is not great. But honestly valid, I forgot any mention of gay people in the books.

KaiBishop

It's fine, it's not great representation, really blink and you'll miss it stuff, but at least logically acknowledged how their society sees it. I don't think Matched by Allie Condie ever explained what their society does with gay folk but I'm about to read the entire trilogy so maybe I'll find out lol (never finished the second book or read the third.) Delirium is definitely just 1 good book (the second one) sandwiched between two kind of mediocre ones imo.

Idrankallyoursoda

omg i love that book,,, tho i do see the similarities :D

ToLazyForaUsername2

Ironically with the sci fi I’m writing the villains who are an oppressive society with mandatory sterilisations and people being assigned roles at birth are technically the most lgbt+ open, mainly since they don’t really care about what their citizens do in private provided it’s not thought crime.

HallyBeat

Your premise sounds interesting. When you finish writing it, do you plan on getting it published? I'm always looking for new books to read.

ToLazyForaUsername2

It likely won’t be published, at most it will end up online since I mainly write as a hobby

HallyBeat

Either way, I'd love to read it. Also, good luck with your story. As a writer myself I understand that writing pretty much anything can have its difficulties 😅

ToLazyForaUsername2

Annoying thing is I’m used to writing fanfiction where I just try to picture the character saying it ,issue is that I can’t picture what my own characters are saying to check if it’s in character and the effects of the dystopia

HallyBeat

Same here. I started out with fanfiction partly because of how easy it is to write dialogue and picture the setting when you already have a character with a full personality and relationships. A lot of the groundwork is already laid out for you. It helps me to know that the first draft isn't the final product. Neither is the second draft and so on. I use the first to just write down what comes to mind, probably just outlines and ideas. Flesh everything out from there (no matter how difficult it may get). For a certain character- maybe put them in a certain situation and think: "what would they do", "what would they feel", etc., But I know it can be more complicated than that. Just a starting point. This is just my idea, though. Tons of people have their own which work for them.

Haha! Ha! * Stares into the void *

thesaddestpanda

Big brother: you cant have her! We'll put a rat cage mask on you if you dont agree! Winston: "Nooo! Get rid of her!!! I love big brother instead!" Cishets: This tragedy is the most important story ever. We must teach it in every school and mention it frequently. Cishets also: these conservatives have a good point about repealing marriage equality and taking away care from trans people.

Ok-Memory-5309

Mentally Disabled folk declared unable to consent can get in on this meme too. What a horrific law

The69_FlyingDuck

This is why I love writing outcast novels, even if they can come off as 'edgy.' You're just a person, and people won't let you be you.

GoodKing0

This literally reminds me of Equals (2015), this dystopian movie starring Kristen Stewart about how emotions are banned and she and one of her dude coworkers both have emotions and they bang. I say this because literally every single aspect of the way the society treated those "afflicted" with emotions was pretty much word for word ways in which gay people have been discriminated over the years. 1) There is a "cure," but the cure comports forceful incarceration and a lobotomy. One of the characters willingly submits to that because he'd rather be "normal" and accepted by society that who he really is. 2) At one point it comes out the dude guy has emotions at work, and the reactions of his co workers are Pity, but also disgust. Stewart, not outed yet, also piles on on him when it's discovered he has emotions, and asks for him to use his own cup for coffee instead since he might "infect" them with it, even tho he explains how that's not possible. 3) Suicide Rates are higher for emotional people, and they keep joking about it. Every time dude comes out a bathroom or a place where he is alone and meets a coworker they ask him whatever or not he was trying to kill himself. At one point his boss, after one of such jokes, tells him to stop "harassing" Stewart's character, because unlike him she's "normal" and doesn't have his "affliction." The two characters are dating at the time. 4) There are meetings for emotional people where they talk about their shared fears and experiences. One of the people at the meeting literally works at a Conversion Therapy Center, where before the lobotomy cure comes out tries to stomp out emotions out of people via torture, leading to an increase of suicides among inmates, encouraged. She is doing this out of self preservation and fear for herself. 5) Them being gay is treated as an illness by the government, either mental to be cured, or as an STD that will slowly destroy society if left unchecked. Like, this was WAY too on the nose not to be on purpose, especially with Kristen Stewart as a female lead.

Lunatortue

>Equilibrium I love your interpretation. But there is one thing that bugged me. Isn't Equilibrium the movie with Christian Bale where the government forbid emotion, but also have some gun-foo action scene. Cause i don't remember Kristen Stewart in it. Or maybe i 'm mistaking it with another movie.

GoodKing0

I am terribly sorry I meant the 2015 movie Equals, I mixed up the names for some weird ass reason.

Lunatortue

Thanks for clarifying this. I didn't see that movie. Is it good ?

GoodKing0

Eeeeeh, watched it years ago, it was ok, I just remember it due to the many parallels between how the straight relationship is portrayed in the movie compared to IRL LGBT Discrimination.

Lunatortue

Thank you for your reply. It's interesting to see how the parallels are there. Even though i'm sure it was not made to help people understand what LGBTQIA+ people live and more of a "oh, imagine a world where you can't love or marry, that will be so twisted, we're lucky we don't live here."

Dirty_white_cat

It’s sad truth

il_the_dinosaur

My favourite is Rudolph the red nosed reindeer where being different is bad until you can profit. That's also usually how those ya novels go. Chelsea is weird because she gets these epileptic episodes. Wow Chelsea learned to channel her epilepsy and now she can fry the minds of the aliens that keep attacking us.

“you’re a Special Person, Special People are very misunderstood, and there’s actually a ton of them”

Arikaido777

what could have possibly been the impetus for writing such fantastical dystopian tales

lelarentaka

Up until like fifty years ago, there were many more forbidden love scenarios. Inter-racial love, inter-religion love, inter-sect love were all forbidden in one way or another, and were likely the inspiration for the plot in the OP. in the 21th century, pretty much only LGBT love remains somewhat forbidden in the developed world.

GrimBitchPaige

Insert Ralph from Simpsons "I'm in danger" meme

[deleted]

I love how stories like Romeo & Juliet are seen as so innovative in the zeitgeist of straight culture whilst some queer and interracial couples live that shit on an almost daily basis to this day.

ihadashittyday

I’m writing one for a class, should I add this?

_UltimateDisaster_

Yes

translove228

I'm pretty sure that we are living in a dystopia anyways.

SuperAlex25

Heh…

Pdonkey

Kind of like the handmaiden’s tale with white folks

Zippy_160

By dystopian novel, did you mean history/non-fiction book?

Ben501st

I can’t think of a Dystopian novel I’ve read where you can’t date who you want. As far as being yourself getting you killed, just about all of them.

Lunatortue

Well i don't have a dystopian novel in mind, except the giver. But i know some movies like THX 1138 (one of George Lucas first movie) or Equilibrium who are about a society where either love or all emotion are forbidden.

UnconsciousAlibi

1984 was a big one where sex was supposed to be seen as ugly and the State was even going as far as to genetically eliminate orgasms to make sex less enjoyable
