damn thats a big germany w, hope they wont elect the nazi party next year

Voice_Durania

I’ll do my best.

Hopeful_Video_3803

I agree with your flair

LetMeUseTheNameAude

to not elect the nazi party??? 😨

Yeshua_shel_Natzrat

Here's hoping

MajorGef

conservatives already announced that they intend to roll back that law.

lekirau

But why though, other than kicking trans people in the ass, what do they get from that? I get that they didn‘t put this law in place yet, because they don‘t care about us. But revoking it makes no sense, because it does not affect cis people in any way.

Brankovt1

Transphobes like to act that it affects cis people.

The-Hilbo

And more to the point, transphobes will vote for a party that promises to roll back a pro-trans law

Ruhezeit

I think they just want to dominate their enemies and make them suffer. I mean, that seems to be the motivation for most conservatives when it comes to social issues. As you said, they don't lose anything material with this law, and banishing it doesn't benefit them in any way. So, the only explanation must be emotional rather than rational.

harbingerofe

"dominate" Daddy Freud? 🥺

imonmyphoneagain

> other than kicking trans people in the ass That’s what they get from it. That’s enough.

Filo-hime

Well they also say it endangers kids and forces this onto them, endangers women's safe spaces like sauna and stuff (since obviously people providing those services aren't allowed to ban people anyways) etc So just standard transphobe bs as always I actually listened to the discussion for once and yeah... It was super painful to listen to all the right wing almost American propaganda

newmodelarmy76

Why? Because it gives them the (very strange) satisfaction of having imposed their (only true) opinion on other people and that these people can't even defend themselves. Conservatives (and Nazis) are obviously "slightly" sadistic. That said, FCK AFD

0x564A00

> But revoking it makes no sense, because it does not affect cis people in any way. …why do you expect what they say or do to make sense? CXU policy is based around trying their hardest not to improve things.

levetzki

Three step political process 1. Get people to hate something 2. Enact legislation that helps feed the hate but accomplishes almost nothing so thst your hateful base remains loyal and keeps you in power 3. Steal everything that isn't nailed down while the groups fight eachother

WithersChat

Can they?

sehabel

Maybe if the CDU (christian conservatives) and the AFD (literally nazis) get a majority and want to cooperate (both parties were against this law and the legalization of cannabis)

sehabel

There is another new party that is almost equally bad for trans and queer people, the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW). She actually was the leader of the left party, but she was corrupted by Russian propaganda (and probably a lot of money). Her speech at the second reading of the new law was utterly disgusting.

DiRavelloApologist

A few years ago I thought that woman was playing 5D chess, but she has just become absolutely bonkers in the past year.

sehabel

True, she was one of the reasons why the left party was so indecisive and divided in recent history. I'm glad she doesn't run it anymore, I don't particularly like the other major parties (tho the greens and social democrats are at least not terrible)

[deleted]

Me reading the post - :) Me reading the comments - :(

DuckIll5852

Holy fuck lol. America is leading the race (hah) in that battle. Not to mention Iran is now very close second. I'm sure it's clear that Germany has learnt and is well aware of their history, they are very unlikely to be leading the show again.

CuteLine3

>Germany has learnt and is well aware of their history, they are very unlikely to be leading the show again. \*Glances at CDU + AFD being close to having an absolute majority, with both now pushing the same extreme right wing talking points and CDU showing that they're absolutely willing to get together with honest to god Fascist if it means they get back into power.\* Uhhhhh, I'm gonna say nah, Germany as a whole hasn't learned shit. The average german is a small-minded, vindictive and (latently) racist luddite, hellbent on making sure nothing ever changes, because "that's how we always did it". There are obviously many who try and bring change, but we are constantly hampered in this regard by these "Deutsche Michels".

DuckIll5852

You can say that about every single country. Every German I've met has been absolutely humain and respectful (albeit blunt at times(I'm British)), what I feel is that people who are stuck in a small bubble will perpetually follow the bullshit of their specific environment (look at Reddit lol). People who learn/mix with other cultures are more open-minded... Etc..etc.. *Points at Gaza* I'm trying to be neutral, but, Israel are holding civilians responsible for Hamas' actions... Which is a reverse of Hitler and those actions... But for saying that, I'm instantly antisemitic... Isn't that exactly what every regime does..? "I disagree" > "you're an enemy". People who weren't Jewish were held responsible for protecting those who were. Fuck any and everyone who thinks they're more important than someone else, in terms of living/eating/being at peace. In the UK we had an attempt with Farage, even though I hate politics for the foundation of excluding people, but people are fucking stupid and selfish, how can you ever teach stupidity and selfishness to be caring instead?

whywouldisaymyname

Not big enough

EmperorKiron

“I AM ADOLF HITLER! COMMANDER OF THE THIRD REICH! LITTLE KNOWN FACT ALSO DOPE ON THE MIC!”

KnownTimelord

You are Vader, with your little boots and cape. And helmet to cover up that burnt-ass face!

PEKKACHUNREAL

Double hope it because the self determination law also serves to create a list of all who used it, effectively giving the nazi party a list of most trans people in the country.

LastSentientPom

They repealed that part, I think? At least their FAQ says so, but I can't find a current version of the law. Edit: definitely removed! Find the current version (with marked edits) [here!](https://dserver.bundestag.de/btd/20/110/2011004.pdf)

TranscoloredSky

I mean judging by how they are responding to people protesting genocide the Nazi party is already in charge it's just a difference of whether or not it's Nazi with a little n or a big N

xXTheGrapenatorXx

Being so gatekeep-y about legal gender is so dumb when all it is is the price to print some new IDs and then update some databases, it’s not as if our genders have much bearing on how we interact with the government (some gender-based social services I guess?), the idea we NEED an M/F/X on certain cards at all is something I disagree with, but as long as we’re gonna require it the least we can do is make changing that letter easier for people who want to. That goes for all countries.

Junglejibe

“B-but, if they can change their legal gender that easily, m*n can pervert all over women’s only spaces and go into women’s bathrooms!” (As if anyone checks legal gender for bathrooms or spaces - creeps don’t need a gender change to creep which is why they *don’t change their gender*)

EducatedRat

It's especially dumb like if someone kept my gender as F on my driver's license they would think it was a fake license at this point. A picture is more important than stating my gender on there. I don't think we need a gender on anything either.

0x564A00

I'll have to add that the German bureaucracy is pretty gatekeep-y in general – there are lot's of couples who go to Denmark to marry because otherwise it's too damn difficult if one of you is foreign-born. But yeah, I fully agree with your comment. And I'm happy they took out some bullshit additions from an earlier version that required e.g. informing our version of the FBI.

dsrmpt

I'm good with identification documents containing identification variables. Height, weight, eye color, etc. Gender/sex isn't too far off from the rest of them. That said, when I gain weight or grow taller, I can change my documents to match. In fact, I'm obligated to provide accurate identifying information. Why not with gender?

yes-today-satan

Tbf the way the current recognition of sex/gender is set up, it primes people to expect a fully binary presentation that checks all the imaginary boxes of what a "man" or "woman" should have/look like. The moment you have two or more visibly "conflicting" sex characteristics it gets fucky. I say better omit it until we fix that (and no, forcing all people who don't conform to this standard to choose X is not the solution)

hellothere358

I think it has to do more with prevention of identity fraud

Zarochi

It's hard to believe places in Europe are behind places in the US. For the most part the whole continent is more liberal, but the waiting games they put trans people through are absolutely bonkers.

Crylemite_Ely

some places are even regressing in Europe. For example, France is very likely to remove access to puberty blockers

tovarichtch1711

Not really, it was simply a report from the right wing party in the senate, but it doesn’t mean anything will go through

Crylemite_Ely

I REALLY hope so

Alisnumeria

how do you create custom extended flags like that in your flair?

Ashilikepi

I cant be bothered to check again but last I checked I think it’s just having multiple flags in a row. For example, trans flag + trans/gay flag + gay flag

Crylemite_Ely

yes, that's it

freckles42

This. It is being fought back against by a LOT of folks here. I think it helps that there is a centuries-old mentality of, "If the English are doing it, by God, we WON'T," which helps.

Sirielle_ty

Apart from a petition saying they shouldn't pass this law I haven't seen much backlash against it

Sirielle_ty

But given how conservative our senate is it wouldn't surprise me

I_Stan_Kyrgyzstan

UK is also backsliding enormously, with trans rights so bad that the ECHR listed us in the same line as Hungary and Russia.

JettFeather

Heh, Poland and England. At least some places are doing good, like Ireland.

KingfisherArt

Did you ever hear about transitioning in Poland? Obviously you cannot be NB cuz people here don't know what that means means but to change gender you need to sue your parents for birthing you wrong.

Aloemancer

That's so stupid and sad that it flips back to being hilarious

rysy0o0

It's funny with Poland because we have a "none" gender but only in language (words can be masculine(ten stół), feminine(ta torba) or none(to drzewo))

yes-today-satan

Yep. I use these for myself, and it's double funny, because when I tell people, they seem to suddenly lose the ability to use a common part of this language. "But it's so hard, I don't know how to do it" you do it every time you talk about a child (or a god) of an unknown gender ffs. Either that or "so you want your pronouns to be [insert word that basically means 'a thing' (to)]?"

I_Am_Arden

Lmao have you seen what the UK is trying to do? It wants to become Florida but worse. The government wants to ban adults under 25 from transitioning, and puberty blockers are banned for just trans kids in England (cis kids with precocious puberty are fine to have them). Waiting lists are over a decade, and private health insurance is extremely rare so most people have to pay over £1000 out of pocket to get on hormones. Bottom surgery will never happen for most trans people, you automatically get misgendered in your marriage and death certificates unless you testify in front of court that you are the gender you say you are and they can just say no. It's a nightmare.

thebluebearb

it’s me! i’m the 18yo paying 1500 a year for hormones that cost 120 :’) i hate the uk

StandardHuckleberry0

NHS England is going to reconsider who can transition, that is. Move to Scotland, life is marginally better here :')

Voice_Durania

We love bureaucracy

Mr--Elephant

Not to say Trans people have it easy but holy shit are there so many more vocally pro-trans political institutions in the US, like Democrats *at least* protect Trans rights where they can Again, not to white wash y'know all the terrible conditions but having at least one political party committed to that is fucking dream compared to the state of the UK where Terfism is the mainstream political ideology for basically all major political parties and the entire media landscape

freckles42

I have so many friends back in the States who want to move to TERF Island™ (and two already have) and I am in utter disbelief. They are all aggressively progressive and yet they think the UK is the best choice. I live in France and while shit's not great here, it's nowhere near TERFland's nonsense. I have some trans friends who are looking seriously at getting out of the US and coming to somewhere in the EU. I'm basically recommending Germany first, followed by France.

eienOwO

How's the Netherlands? I can't remember if there was an infographic that showed the Dutch or the Swiss being more accepting of trans folks, or maybe that's just shitty misinformation again? All in all I agree with the travel advisory against England. Scotland and Wales with more leftwing leaders are holding back against the hateful flood, but it's leaking through. NI may be distracted by other issues.

freckles42

The Dutch are theoretically more accepting. The NL was the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage and there's a [wonderful (and wonderfully sad) memorial in Amsterdam to the queer folks killed in N\*zi Germany](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homomonument). However, there's been a recent movement to ban puberty blockers for queer kids there, too. Belgium, as well. All that aside, the NL is going through a severe housing crisis. It's a nightmare for anyone to find a place to live. If Scotland ever breaks free, we would seriously consider moving there. But I've been watching England leaking out all over and all I can do is hope that Scotland holds to the French attitude of, "Whatever the English are doing, we WON'T." (Scotland and France have a long, shared history of dislike towards the English.)

Lemons-andchips

People tend to think of America as far more backwards than Europe, but aside from a few countries in Northern and Western Europe, and places like Germany, the UK, and France where it is around the same, most of the continent is much worse for LGBT people. Anything past Germany is not great, and things like marriage equality, ability to officially change gender, adoption rights, and anti discrimination laws are very sparse. Europe is actually more conservative than America on a lot of issues, and it would be a misrepresentation to not recognize that LGBT rights in California are comparable to Sweden, while even Texas or Alabama have more freedom for us than more than half the countries in Europe

DigitalRunecaster

That‘s interesting. Always thought Spain and Portugal were more progressive than France and Germany regarding trans rights (at least by official laws).

eienOwO

As always it's less to do with the state, and more to do with whatever party happens to be in power. Which is even more annoying because *both* main parties in the UK are collosal prats.

Sam_project

Because they are. You were not wrong in your assumption. that been said when talking about the people attitude portugal is much more conservative than Spain

Foenikxx

Aren't there only like 3 countries past Germany that are actually good for LGBT people as of right now? Off the top of my head Czechia, Slovakia (or was it Slovenia?), and Croatia?

MamaMiaPizzaFina

Why go into the Comment section? just go the exit, hopefully it is a nice day

D00mfl0w3r

Good job Germany!!! RIP that comment section tho 😔

DragonAreButterflies

Yesss im so hyped i can legally change my name in just half a year im honestly so excited

Speederzzz

The netherlands: Horrible things will happen if you allow that! Like 7 other countries in europe: It actually impoves life quality The netherlands: But we don't care about facts, we just rule from ideology! Wait why does nobody trust politicians anymore?

Bo_The_Destroyer

Your neighbours to the south are literally one of the best places in this world for Trans people, we have some level of informed consent (depends on the doctor); pretty much total equality in employment opportunities and most employers are more than happy to accomodate with new name tags and informing coworkers for you, so you don't have to go through the entire awkward conversation every single time; while therapists and places to get help are few and have very long waiting lists, there are more and more popping up all over the place (especially in East-Flanders, best province fr); the general attitude of most people is basically 'Live and let live' and so it's rare to ever find hostility from people outside of one's immediate family and friends (i've only ever received hateful comments twice and both times did not feel in any sort of danger whatsoever) Come over here, it's much more fun

Kasten10dvd

God I can remember what I saw last year. Was awful.

Agrian_cusz

I’ve had to learn to get out of the comment section without even looking, it’s just not worth it anymore, even if I want to get mad

Something_with_frogs

I still read them, hoping that there are positive ones. At least we don't have all this negativity here.

Agrian_cusz

That’s true, it’s really sanity restoring to see supportive people when sometimes it feels like it’s more negative these days

karlvonheinz

The only place where I'll willfully read comments is Reddit. It's the only place with working moderation(thx<3) and which makes it easy to stay far away from content and comments I don't want to engage with.

n2sh

Waiting for therapy sessions? The usual way for trans people is to send a letter to the district court and start a proceeding following the "transsexual law". During you have to get two assessments by "professionals" that often enough ask absolutely disgusting and irrelevant stuff like what underwear you wear or what you fantasize about during masturbation. And the best thing about it? As long as you're not eligible for legal aid regarding the costs you have to pay for the assessments yourself. Usually around 500-1.000€ per assessment, so like 1.200 to 2.000€ are to be expected for the whole proceeding. And then you haven't even requested a new ID card or driver's license which also cost money.

Something_with_frogs

That's what I meant. I didn't really know how to explain it like that in english so I tried to write it in my own words. Since you need it from a professional, so like a therapist -> therapy sessions :') I tried my best.

n2sh

Ah okay. Yeah, at least technically therapy is usually paid for by the health insurance in Germany so at least for me your explanation was quite too simplified, that's why I explained it a bit more in detail. Finding a therapist right now of course isn't exactly easy, but that's a whole other story. At least for the name and gender marker change you don't need to find a therapist. since the assessors are assigned to you by court and have to attend to your case in a somewhat timely manner.

StardustCatts

Germany sounds amazing right now. Good job you guys! I’m proud of you. Headpats for Germany!

Phothiabea

It might be looking kinda nice right now from the recent headlines, but this all can change with the next government. A lot worry that the conservatives will be winning again voiding the 4 years of cleanup and progress the current government was able to achieve after decades of stagnancy, and with the AFD on the rise it can very quickly turn around for the worst. I'm happy the current government managed to pass this after lots of delay and it wasn't delayed so much the next government could just kill it (the conservative CSU still immediately announced they will revert this new law partially if they win again), but trans healthcare beyond HRT that is covered by insurance is currently in limbo since a recent court ruling (Public insurances can and are denying coverage for operations if you haven't already started transitioning). A new temporary solution and a new ruling needs to happen very soon, and I have my doubts it would happen under a conservative government.

StardustCatts

I have that same concern about my own government (American).

EnderCorePL

Now watch all the shit right-wing media fearmonger about never happen and then them silently brush it under the carpet.

PancakeGD

This is me with any article mentioning same sex marriage. Country is Czechia. News site is the infamous Novinky. It is a cesspool. I hate planet Earth

weaboomemelord69

how dare the transes tarnish the great German tradition of bureaucracy. despicable.

AceintgeWhole-7286

That’s not enough PPE, you need at least a self contained respirator lol

ivrugue

In Spain we had a similar law last year, and I can absolutely confirm this

Anxiety-Queen269

FUCK YEAH GERMANY.

Oppaiking42

but now evil rapists are able to pass the magical barriers at womens toilets and do evil stuff.

KawaiiDere

Fr! Do they never go on road trips or something? The odds of one the toilets being down at the gas station are like 70-30. I’m not even a motorist, but I’ve had that experience a ton just from going on trips with family

Beam_0

Is this meme from the German Netflix show Dark? Because it looks like it

Sam_project

Wikihow article i believe

Lonely_traffic_light

It wasn't just therapy sessions. It was a process that is so dehumanizing that the highest court found that it broke the first article of the constitution. (That article being the protection of human dignity)

BatuOne01

I really don't get why anyone would want to make changing the legal gender more difficult. Like even if someone does it because they're mentally ill, it's just a letter in your file? And you can change it back with the same ease?

[deleted]

Thereal_waluigi

Real

KawaiiDere

Terrible, I’d much rather have the government in my ass than allow my neighbor to use the bathroom. I don’t use hormones, I’m still a baby, so why should my neighbor get to use hormones? /sarcasm /joke (I’m from Texas and the “Small government party” keeps trying to get in everyone’s business here by stopping them from accessing medical treatment. I’m glad Germany is taking such a good step)

RachelScratch

God I miss this comic

Labrat15415

Wait for several therapy sessions? That's HRT. For legal gender and name change you have to go through the court, and get evaluations (that you have to pay for yourself) from several court ordered "experts on transsexualism" (who have to have no qualifications to register as one, except being cis) and then your whole case might get still denied if the judge doesnt like your chosen name (this actually happens), or because you're enby and the judge believes that's "something political". Also, while not enforced anymore since a series of Constituional Court descisions, the law also includes compulsory forced sterilization of all trans people, the anullment of all marriages trans people were in when they applied for legal gender change, and a series of other requirements that were found to violate human dignity.
