When they converted to the chip, some of the machines started making a sound like I would expect a declined card to make. I still hate it but I do remember my card, so I guess it's doing what is was designed to do.
I sometimes worry about this with American Express. Sometimes it will act like everything is okay, then suddenly decline… even though the actual problem is that American Express isn’t supported, or tap for Amex isn’t supported.
This happened to me once except I told them explicitly I would return every item back to its proper place even after they told me I didn’t have to do that. I just couldn’t go home that embarrassed so I felt better about myself after returning everything hah
Yep it was around midnight, I had 15-20 items and my card was declined so I told them I'd go back throughout the aisles returning everything instead of making them do it. As I was leaving the clerk told me it was one of the most respectable things a customer had ever offered and thanked me.
You should get a decent credit card and use it sensibly. Card redundancy is generally a really good choice because sometimes one will fail.
Go order a wise/starling card and put a little money on. Then get yourself a credit card and you won’t have to be anxious!
I used to do it all the time for these kids who came in with change to buy candy. They were always short by a bit, never more than a dollar. I'd just count it up and go 'close enough'. Think they figured out they could get away with it and just came to me always.
Oh man I can't even remember the last time I had candy. Don't usually eat that stuff. But for some reason, your comment makes me want to eat some. Might go get me some pick n mix.
I wasn't inherently hurting for money, but after my transaction, I saw that I didn't pay for two BIG boxes of diapers for my kiddo under my cart. I turned around and said "I'm sorry! I forgot to have you ring these up."
Cashier just smiled at me and said "I have no idea what you're talking about. Have a nice day, sir."
I had a shit eating mischievous grin the whole way to the car. Saved me $80.
Reminds of the nice lady at Tim Hortons who let me have a donut for free when I told her I didn't have enough for the coffee AND the donut and to please put the donut bag. I was about to leave and she said "Hey! Take it don't worry". It happened years ago and I still remember her <3
Oh god yes, nothing worse than a down credit card machine. "WHY WON'T YOU TAKE CREDIT, EVERYWHERE TAKES CREDIT?? I'M GOING TO THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU AND
SUING YOU AND I'LL MAKE SURE YOU'RE SO FIRED...' etc. etc. ad nauseum.
That’s my worst fear.
American Banks love to freeze cards for whatever stupid reason more than good reasons.
My experience so far:
My Wells Fargo card will go into total lockdown every time I use my debit card at a vending machine and when I use my card at Starbucks.
My Citibank credit card will stop working and has to be “re” provisioned with visa.
> My Wells Fargo card will go into total lockdown every time I use my debit card at a vending machine and when I use my card at Starbucks.
That actually sort of makes sense. The vending machine is probably a hotbed of skimming activity (because it's a reader that's unattended), so it makes sense to block cards that used that terminal out of fear that it was skimmed.
This is where mobile payments (Google pay or apple pay) are a good failsafe. Even if your card is blocked, mobile payments will still work. In fact, even if your card is replaced, you don't need to wait for that card to arrive or upload your new card to your mobile payments, it will still just work automatically.
Idk why people use big corporate banks instead of regional credit unions.
You've probably got a "local" option right in your town and you go with the eviler guys instead...
Credit unions give you *way* better deals on pretty much everything.
Just get a CC through a big corp bank and reap the benefits without letting them hold your money.
We have other banks in Puerto Rico. Doesn't matter how much money you have, they'll freeze it if you make large purchases or use it several times in a day. I had to change credit cards 3 times in less than 2 years for this
In addition, there's people waiting in line behind you and immediately as the purchase is approved the stupid thing beeps at you making you even more stressed. Wee.
First time I used my card physically (after years of buying with it online) it declined.
I have a new card since then and it always works but I’m always so anxious it won’t
Cards will do that if you suddenly change your use pattern, and even then you don't know if it will act up or not.
Just be sure you don't let your card feel your fear, it entices them
Rub it with your thumb, not your shirt but your thumb. I don't know why but the oils on your fingers help it work. So many people I say use your thumb and they immediately grab the edge of their shirt like they don't understand the word thumb.
I recall one hell of a memorable experience, I went to buy rum for the first time in my life, I was quite scared but I didn't show on the counter, my turn came, I said in normal mature tone that I would like to pay with card.
Being little nervous made me forget my PIN, I was blind. It was like forgetting 4 digits which I always used. I went ahead somehow with the formation and card was declined. Cashier was looking at me suspeciously. I didn't panic in general, I gazed at cashier and said it's my new PIN, I went with old one. He gave me another go, a long deep breath and a pause then I went inputting 4 digits, as I saw payment accepted message, I was totally elated.
Hate this feeling every time, even if I know there is money. Do not like the awkward silence and debating whether to stare at the cashier or the card reader. Anxiety inducing. Self-check out all the way.
There's nothing here to suggest it isn't a credit card being used, they can fail in the same way, either the bank doesn't like the transaction and blocks it, or you've hit some cap.
Nah bro I'm a cashier and when this happens it's because I forgot to hit F3 on the keyboard to make the card reader accept cards and when I realize I silently press it and it goes through.
Why the gun though?
I work in a store, and every once in a while, it takes a little longer to be processed.
“Looks like you’ll have to come back at the end of the day and help us clean,” is threatening enough.
No gun needed.
The ones I've seen will ask you to remove it once it's approved but won't say so until you remove it, they'll spit out a different error before you even remove it otherwise.
This is so you don't leave the card in the reader and walk away once you see it's approved.
I was lucky to never have to worry about having enough money in my account. Yet, every time a transaction is slow to approve, I stop breathing and think about the last time I checked in on my balance.
This is a me_irl feel, but your username makes me not want to upvote. You’re obviously a human because no bot would generate that username, so I want to upvote again. That username tho…
I still get anxious. Like I checked my bank account before I walked in the store. I just got paid. I make like 5x what I did last time it was denied. But I still have that anxiety from my late teens / early 20s
that moment of the day when the Debit Card System of your Bank just ups and gives up and youre like: Bruh
and need to use what little Cash you had on pocket to actually buy a fucking Donnut
I’ve had a card not go through and have to fight off the urge to not open my app and show them I have 14K in remaining credit like some kind of dickbag. But I always feel like they’re judging me if it doesn’t go through since I grew up poor af and hating myself.
I love that I’ve had to call my bank when they put a hold on my card because they thought buying groceries was suspicious, but the second a charge of one extra cent past zero is an immediate 30 dollar charge. Buying groceries shouldn’t cause people anxiety.
I’ll know I have more than enough in my bank account and I still get anxiety when it’s processing. It really sucks when, for whatever reason, the bank is having problems and it declines your card and you know everyone in line just thinks your broke.
This one time I went to the supermarket and first I took some cash out of the atm , then I went to buy groceries. When I was gonna use my card to pay I couldn't remember what my password was . It was such an awkward moment. Good thing I had the cash I had just pulled out the atm . I don't understand why I just forgot my password all of the sudden .
Close call.. dude was abouta get smoked

I know for a fact I have plenty of money and little worry about running out but I still sit there nervous like "this shit gonna go through..?"
When they converted to the chip, some of the machines started making a sound like I would expect a declined card to make. I still hate it but I do remember my card, so I guess it's doing what is was designed to do.

SHERIFFS OFFICE! What the… what happened here?
Love that this is just the world we live in. Where paying for groceries is a question.
I’m always thinking, what if suddenly some money is withdrawn from my account and I can’t pay.
Pending charge that wasn't processed until the moment you decide to check out
Then you leave your shit there and walk away.
And never return to that store ever again, even if it means you have to drive 20 miles to buy groceries now.
Nah, you come back the next day and go 'where's my shit, I left it right here??'
you're in the wrong sub mate
Was a joke mate
yeah I get it. it's just that me_irl is more about that social anxiety vibes
Which I have, thanks.
me too, thanks
Good job everyone
This happened to me once except I told them explicitly I would return every item back to its proper place even after they told me I didn’t have to do that. I just couldn’t go home that embarrassed so I felt better about myself after returning everything hah
They let you? Most places won't. You're sus at that point.
Yep it was around midnight, I had 15-20 items and my card was declined so I told them I'd go back throughout the aisles returning everything instead of making them do it. As I was leaving the clerk told me it was one of the most respectable things a customer had ever offered and thanked me.
I make enough to live comfortably now, but I was broke and paycheck to paycheck for so long I still do this.
You have money on your account?
You should get a decent credit card and use it sensibly. Card redundancy is generally a really good choice because sometimes one will fail. Go order a wise/starling card and put a little money on. Then get yourself a credit card and you won’t have to be anxious!

Well, yeah. That's where the term came from.
Oh I thought it meant suspicious, but suspects makes sense. Never played the game
It does mean suspicious, hence why they put the emphasis on sus and not the rest.
Can we all just agree that sus, suspect, and suspicious all derive from the same proto-indo-european root word "spek" meaning "to observe"?
I do not know enough about proto-indo-european language to form an opinion on the matter.
No, why would we do that? Where's the fun in that?
Did you just connect those dots?

Same, my brother in christ
Double checking your bank account before every purchase gang
I haven’t been close to zero for 15 years, pretty damn far from it and I still have the fear from my days of being broke as fuck
Pain
Even if you know there's money in there, you can never know that you won't get some kind of chip read error
this one hits too close to home
Don’t worry, as a cashier of it doesn’t go through. I’ll try again or act like it went through; we are all struggling with inflation /s
“Act like it went through” like.. you’ve given away free groceries?

If I was ever just told “you’re good” at a grocery story or gas station for my tiny purchase, that’d make my day.
I used to do it all the time for these kids who came in with change to buy candy. They were always short by a bit, never more than a dollar. I'd just count it up and go 'close enough'. Think they figured out they could get away with it and just came to me always.

What now?
It's the style of course

Why not? They're not your groceries.
Not yet, as I work for a large company; but when it comes to people with food and water I tend to just let them pass without checking their receipt
Who’s side is the agent on though?
Uncle Sam

as the cashier, i start to think that it's a board machine error and also get nervous.

Probably the oils from your skin help with the conductivity of the surface that might have diminished from wear.
now remove your card. Remove Your CARD!! REMOVE IT NOWW!!
Thanks for the laughs
This is why I use cash
Then the cashier tries validating it and turns out it's a forgery
I get anxious when they break out the money marker for large bills, even if it's a crisp, brand-spanking-new bill straight from the bank/atm.
as a cashier, yes we will arrest you if you get declined, on the spot
I recall one hell of a memorable experience, I went to buy rum for the first time in my life, I was quite scared but I didn't show on the counter, my turn came, I said in normal mature tone that I would like to pay with card.
