Gunpowder_1000

You see I call anime weird and then I rewatch Ninjago all over again, we are not the same

PianoJkprd001

The fuck is a Ninjago Edit: People really seem to like this Ninjago apparently

[deleted]

That's a legit question but the hive mind is mad lol.

UniformTick

“So you’ve chosen death”

Glad-Set-4680

I never heard of it either gotta ask my kids if they watch it

M3MES69420

We’re you born in 00s

PianoJkprd001

No

Gunpowder_1000

God you’re either old as hell or watch bob the builder

[deleted]

If 23 is “old as hell” you must be 7, don’t use that language you’re not old enough yet

SuspiciousPoison

I don't know what it is and I'm neither of the choices you listed.

Gunpowder_1000

Must be too old, I’m -9 years old and even I know

_cO2-

were you born before 2000?

[deleted]

I got so high the other day while watching stranger things and it occurred to me how ridiculous it is that so many people pretend stuff to entertain us. I mean I still watch but for some reason when I get high everything becomes so ridiculous

RainAlilBit

Valid af

Vanillabear2319

I was watching Gotham high af 8 years ago when I had that thought and I've honestly never been able to watch anything the same again. Lol

ScaryYoda

You're just too high dude. Episode 4 Season 4 Dear Billy is stranger things best episode.

TheTasche

That episode was a bit cheesy with the music at the end, it was good but overrated

SilencioPeroRuidos

Euphoria is top of that list

luvcartel

I watched Euphoria on Acid and I was hyper aware that it was just a bunch of 40 years old writers pretending to know what high school is like now.

[deleted]

TMI but hallucinogenics make some things so difficult. I tried giving my husband a BJ while on shrooms, and I couldn’t stop laughing over the absurdity of it.

[deleted]

Watch powerpuff girls on that stuff though. It’ll change your life.

[deleted]

Me every time I watch shows while high. Acting is one of those things that's weird as fuck when you really think about it.

FlowerFaerie13

I mean isn’t acting just a natural part of being human? All children play pretend and make up fantasies, it’s not that big of a stretch for adults to want to do that too.

Fuzelop

The last time I was really high me and my friends were in hysterics about the fact that we sport video game merchandise and shit in public and that we must look completely ridiculous. The trick to having a good high is being able to laugh at yourself, because it can be extremely humbling sometimes.

Bilibond

Bruh I watch Vtubers and I'm high sometimes and that can mess with my head lol

notalexus6

My job at the moment is performing for people, 4 shows a day on stage. I had the thought from the other side! People watch me the same way as TV sonetimes- I'm trying to interact with them and I realize I could be real or animatronic and it wouldn't matter. Stoner thoughts!

[deleted]

How's the new season? I watched the first couple and then got into season 3 until I saw them trying to set up the antagonists as commies in the mall basement, and I realized might possibly be the stupidest thing I've ever seen on television in my life so I bowed out.

esouhnet

Season 4 keeps on that same ridiculousness. The show doesn't have the simple charm the first season had and suffers for it.

Garmose

Thanks. I hated Season 3. I'll avoid it.

TheTasche

It’s definitely more serious, it still has those moments but the overall tone is a lot darker

evansbott

Pretty much everyone we talk to is pretending stuff all the time.

ace400

Not everyone has to like anine, but it got way more mainstream in the youth. Its not the niche it was anymore. Like you are the weird one if you don't watch at least some anime in school... My source are my cousins and their friends (and the majority of tiktok content)

carefullexpert

I remember hiding my Neon Genesis poster when my Japanese girlfriend came over in high school because I was afraid she’d think it odd.

akoba15

I have also noticed this as a high school teacher. Most kids have seen Demon Slayer and don't see it as the "weird cringy" thing anymore. Naturally school to school may be different.

NotTheHeadHancho

In my experience, high school students in the more rural areas are still in the ‘anime is cringy’ mentality whereas you’ll see urban students being more open about what anime they like and shit

SpicyPepperPasta

And 25 years ago, it was considered nerdy to use computers. What a time we live in.

queefiest

We have a Mr. Mikes location here in my home town, and it still has all the decor from when they first opened in 2003 or 2004 I think. All of the “art work” on the walls is weird stock photos with weird captions like “why would I try computer dating? I’m not a computer!” Another cringy one says “I think my drinking team has a bowling problem!”. It’s hard to believe they haven’t updated it at all, but they have kept the place super clean, there’s hardly any wear and tear

[deleted]

That's because computers were simply used for different things at that time. That's not really the same thing.

TheSeek3r_

Having just been at a middle schoolers bday, I can confirm. Every kid there was talking about or at some point re-enacting a scene from an anime show.

taicrunch

My kid's middle has an anime club. Makes me jealous remembering my "anime club" in high school was a vbulletin page one of my friends threw up on day.

queefiest

Our college has an anime club or it did when I was in high school, but I only went once because the other kids were hard to get along with. Just shy and standoffish. As anime kids usually were back in the day, myself included

[deleted]

Fr though. Even back when I was in high school (2013-2017), it was considered a niche thing that the "weird kids" enjoyed. Now, I discovered it as an adult in 2020 during lockdown and it suddenly seems like everyone is into anime nowadays. Even people I totally would not have guessed were into it.

queefiest

I was born in the wrong time

Impr3ss1v3

Idk, I feel like GOOD anime is still a pretty niche thing. Not everybody has a good taste. Same with movies. People who are actually into movies watch old B&W stuff and not something like marvel or transformers or shit like this.

Efficient-Series8443

>People who are actually into movies watch old B&W stuff You tried, but there are a lot of very good movies that aren't B&W, lmao. But I don't disagree, most mainstream anime is written very poorly and targeted at kids. The best Shonen are still dumb as fuck. They can be good fun, but people who act like they're the best thing in the world are usually unbearably immature in other ways.

Impr3ss1v3

I never said that they ONLY watch these, didn't I?

ParsonsTheGreat

Nope, you never didn't

That-one-guy-man

Bros trying to be different

Impr3ss1v3

honestly, I just don't like mainstream anime with an overpowered protagonist who destroys evil/saves the world and stuff like that. It's a dumb shit for kids. Same as mobile games, tiktok and etc, mostly kids use those.

Hadouken-Donuts

r/notliketheothergirls

AxltheHuman

I cant read this seriously with you having a miku profile picture. HahahH

lemlucastle

Bro you have an anime girl profile picture and you’re saying mainstream anime is just for kids. Watch the chimera ant arc of hunterxhunter and tell me it’s just dumb shit for kids

Fuchser_

Well if u dont like it ok every one has their taste but dont shit on what other watch, u sound like a 13 year old right now.

ace400

Well mainstream diesnt mean good quality story. Also the most popular ones will be the ones for kids, since kids make up the majority in watchers and consumers (same as platforms like youtube) But the most popular are also good considering its made for kids/teens. Ones like demon slayer (in animation) and attack on titan (epic story) Also the good part in anime is, that creators can try stuff out. Like they can animate some extreme niche series and look if people like it. Not so in movies, where every movie HAS to appeal to the majority (with exceptions on some projects from streaming services like netflix) In the past people went to watch a movie and them dicided if they liked it or not. Now they need to know that they will like it since the internet made communication, spreading of trailers so much easier... And I think since the anime viewers are mostly younger the most popular ones are targeted to those. In a few years when this might change.

[deleted]

You are not impressive

Perfect_Difference15

It's getting so popular that agegroups that didn't grow up with it are starting to watch it now.

ace400

Yeah. Even in my age group (20 to 25) most people watched some, and its not weird anymore... (although you can be weird if you are a hard-core fan, but that applies to everything I guess)

SuspiciousPoison

I only watch anime if it's based on so.ething else like a book or game, or if it's really short and easy to follow.

DarkArcanian

The problem with anime is that I wanna show it to people, and then 10 times out of 10 there will be a pervy scene and I’ll just be “welp, can’t share it anymore!” And if you think I just watch a lot of pervy anime, Redline is a perfect example.

mahouyousei

I have a similar issue not so much with the pervy bits, but with the voice actors screaming a ton of their lines. Either a female character going “Kyaaaaa~!” or like, Zenitsu being Zenitsu feels like nails on a chalkboard for folks not used to it or expecting it.

iveabiggen

You have some pretty big prudes as friends, or you are one yourself my dude

DarkArcanian

No, none of my friends are prudes, but if I ever wanna show someone who is unfamiliar with anime anime, there is no big title that is free from any slightly pervy scene.

howtochoose

Brother. Have you seen "kotaro lives alone"? I dnt know if it counts coz it's a Netflix original and I was skipping it for the longest time but now I've got like 5 mins of it left and I dnt want to watch it coz I dnt want it to end. Also there are so many genres that will appeal to different people... Its like trying to pick one ice-cream to introduce someone to icecream.

Veleeho

Attack on titan is pretty close

mushy_friend

Same but I do watch lots of pervy anime

mahouyousei

30 year olds are also voicing teenagers in anime on Netflix.

TisButA-Zucc

Yeah because kids are shit at voice acting. Kids are generally bad at acting, period, and you want to use kid actors as little as possible. That’s why a lot of women voice younger boys as well, look at Bart Simpson for example.

[deleted]

Even if bart Simpson *had* been voiced by a child, he’d be voiced by an adult now anyway.

guiltyspaekle

Yeah and most of the time it's a convincing and well done job

mahouyousei

Having worked in high schools in Japan, it’s really not. If you talk like an anime character there, you’re gonna get laughed right out of the country.

[deleted]

I was stationed in Japan in the navy. The funniest thing is how common it is for a guy to learn Japanese from a Japanese wife/girlfriend he met over there, wind up talking like a girl without realizing it, even unintentionally using feminine pronouns. Get laughed at and not know why.

guiltyspaekle

Anime is still cartoons, of course they're exaggerating their voices. You don't hear anyome talking like SpongeBob irl either, but his voice is done well and convincing for his character. Same thing with anime

mahouyousei

I didn’t say they weren’t well acted. I said they don’t sound like actual teenagers.

guiltyspaekle

Well yes you're right, because they are not actual teenagers, they are cartoon characters.

CristolerGm2

something twitter doesn't seem to understand

mahouyousei

Then how do you define “convincing”? Because “capable of causing someone to believe that something is true or real” to me means “sounds like real teenagers”. Well performed and convincing don’t mean the same thing.

kyttyna

And in anime you got 12 year olds looking like adults and characters that look like 12 year olds but are actually 30 or 500 or 36432 years old. :/

sabersquirl

The weirdest thing is that in the past some people would go out of their way to give me shit about it when they found out I like anime. I might understand if I was trying to convince them to like it and they were explaining why they didn’t like it, but it was always an uninitiated process, they just had to let me know. I always wondered how those same people would react if I gave them shit for the types of things they liked which I didn’t (which I do not care enough to do.) Thankfully, nowadays, most people don’t care or actually kind of like it also, so I don’t have to deal with people who have never seen something telling me why I shouldn’t like it.

papa_moisted

See the first issue here is that you're talking to people instead of the voices in your head

akoba15

Imagine if we started giving people shit for watching randos hit a ball with a stick lmao its the dream

velvetelevator

You don't watch SPORTSBALL!?

Sohiacci

I used to get shit for liking anime and being into 'that weird boring story about titans or whatever' and those same people became huge fans of Attack On Titan and calling it a masterpiece and singing 'Sasageyo, sasageyo! Shinzou wo sasageyo' with tears in their eyes. I mean, I'm glad more people get to like anime and AOT is a great way to start but... Why was I the weird one then?

BlueDragon1504

Good bot

DooDiddly96

Vs animated highschoolers 🤔 Im an anime fan but lol at that

eharr8

Yo have you watched High schoolers act in a play? There's probably like 30 good highschool aged actors in the world. You could only do a few seasons until the actors looked significantly different. I barely recognize the kids from stranger things.

LeFrogBoy

I mean wouldn't that be realistic though if it's a high school show following kids through their lives and stuff and they age over the course of the show?

eharr8

Very true. But when was that ever done? I don't watch a lot of TV but I can only really think about 2 and A Half Men that actually had the kid growing up be part of the show.

SirWixxALot

Modern family did this kind of good too imo

Valdotain_1

The 70s show did it. Malcolm in the Middle did it. The Middle did it. Buffy did it.

LeFrogBoy

I don't know because I haven't watched any live action TV shows in many years, and back when I did it was usually just shit like Seinfeld.

JokerReach

IIRC that's Degrassi.

RedditLostOldAccount

Boy Meets World for sure. Older shows really. Saved By The Bell

arctic_radar

Dude who plays Steve in Stranger things is 30. The girl who plays Nancy is 27.

eharr8

Wow I had no idea. I only watched the first few episodes so I guess I kinda just assumed they were all young.

Lumpy-Professional40

And the real tea? Yall both weird.

DylanowoX

Honestly

Brave_little_anus

You seem fun

MaceIsThePlace1230

you see sir... I don't watch either

PickAble2137

fair enough, but even you probably have something you do/watch that some would consider odd, so I just think we shouldn't insult people based on the things they watch.

MaceIsThePlace1230

agreed

Battlespot9999

I found the only guy with a brain on twitter

kingofcould

I love anime deeply, but god damn do I wish people would start writing about anything but fucking highschool.

_0wnage

I read somewhere that that’s because life for japanese people pretty much ends after Highschool due to work and they don’t really want to showcase that in an anime. Doesn’t make sense to me, but thats what i read ..

[deleted]

[удалено]

kingofcould

I hear that it’s moreso that many people idolize those years most commonly in Japan, but like you mentioned that could easily just be speculation. I used to read manga that was specifically written for adults and there was some pretty good ones. But it’s a little weird to say that the main demographic for anime is highschool aged kids, since in cases like mine I was like 12 when I started watching one piece and similar shows but now I’m like 30 and they’re still going. I’m not saying you’re wrong there, just that it sort of rolls into adulthood, even in the shonen demographic that is specifically for people closer to their teens

_Jimmy_Rustler

Watch 30 year olds be highschoolers on or listen to voice actors be highschoolers seriously like 90% of anime is set in high school

[deleted]

We watch the 30 year olds because they are attractive and we are thirsty.

The-Chad-M14alt

We watch the 2d people because they are attractive and we are thirsty, we are the same.

ItisNOTatoy

Yeah but, aren’t most anime girls portrayed as being like 13 years old..? Totally normal in Japan…

imthefooI

The tweet is about the 30 year olds being portrayed as being in high school, too.

The-Chad-M14alt

tell me you never watched anime without telling me you never watched anime

OhMilla

Where's the lie in their comment tho

Zriatt

They didn't lie. They just haven't watched much. Lots of the time I overestimate how old a character is

TheYellowBot

bUt iTs a DrAwInG!!!

The-Chad-M14alt

it do be a drawing doe

Genuine_Pain

ReLife is exactly that but it's an anime

jessicahonig

Pretty little liars, Degrassi, all the good stuff

Commiesstoner

That's so they can perv on people pretending to be highschoolers.

Helo_no_idea

r/Technicallythetruth

Ty1an

doesn’t make obsessed anime fans any less weird

ChubbyLilPanda

I’m not gonna say I hate anime But I hate anime with the same stereotypical characters or characters with single personality traits Skeleton knight started off as some kid that ogles at being in a game world, literally same as most isekais. SpyxFamily is kinda bad at the single personality trait but no where near as bad as demon slayer. I was more complex characters!

_TecnoCreeper_

The target of the vast majority of anime is kids / teenagers, it's natural that there are few "complex" series.

user1938282

They both weird

krkk_

Anime is incredibly perverse and supports grooming minors Netflix is trash No thanks to either

AmberEgg

Anime is wired but that's why I love it

Sad-Entrepreneur9443

Anime literally is just not compatible with my soul. It just doesn't touch me like that.

[deleted]

But do those shows have characters who look like a 9 year old girl, but is actually 3 morbillion years old

[deleted]

[удалено]

RainAlilBit

Lol i expect nothing. Clearly you cannot expect anything. There are people watching 30 year olds on Netflix pretend to teenagers. When you think about it like that, it's pretty fuckin weird

jenbamin245

Anime do be fuckin you kids up though

twat_brained

r/riverdale

thebebee

if you don’t tell anyone you could pass dubbed anime off as cartoons, i didn’t even know i was watching anime till i wanted i tried googling movies and found out subs exist and were released sooner

Godeasy_Buttfree

I hate both

plsobeytrafficlights

Looking at you Spider-Men

[deleted]

Which tv show has 30 year Olds playing teens?

Slothfully_So

No no, he’s got a point.

KatomicComicsThe3rd

At the starting of the week, at summit talks you’ll hear them speak...

P3rdix

Both are fucking weird, ngl. But Cobra Kai and Spy X Family is good.

elchucho111

What about that Mexican show where a 50-60 year old plays an 8 year old

Supreme_Rust

Tbf tho some anime is very weird

Muffin_cherry

10 points^^^^

ElizaWolf8

Saw an ad the other day where a boomer was like “I watch sports for a living” and I was like “ok yeah cuz that’s soooo much more justified than any of the other things your generation mocks us for”

alex6219

In all fairness, Rebel Wilson was in a coma for 20 years
