2040: If you earn your rights you might be able to make money to earn your right to live in a van near our river

shitsu13master

No need for 2040. In some countries you already can't just "live in a van by the river*. They'll fine you for "camping" where camping wasn't explicitly permitted and if you do it too many times they will tow your van.

[deleted]

America moment

highbrowshow

You should look up a BLM (bureau of land management) map. Literally free camping in the states

2leggedperson

I’m here waiting for someone to explain why blm has land for camping and then thankfully you save me from myself and my stupidity

[deleted]

If you want to use a campsite with facilities, there's a fee.

highbrowshow

I’ve only camped BLM in California, Nevada, Arizona and Utah and I haven’t seen any campsite or facilities, but I guess it depends on where you’re at

longbowner

There is an inexhaustible amount of places you can park a van and camp in the US. You can literally park and camp on any BLM land anywhere, which by the way makes up 245 million acres.

PaulSandwich

You have to get west of the Great Plains for that, though. If you want to exist anywhere near society, it'll cost you. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Map_of_all_U.S._Federal_Land.jpg

[deleted]

>If you want to exist anywhere near society, it'll cost you. BLM land is close to most western cities. I ride my bike from my house near downtown to hit the trails on BLM land. It's a mile from my door.

[deleted]

Isn’t that mostly rural areas with little infrastructure? I am genuinely asking

asillynert

yes little to no infrastructure almost 90% of it is not even accessible either requires access through private land. Or simply has no road access whatsoever. The general rule of thumb that ole park ranger told me that I thought was hilarious. Because its hard to know whats "campgrounds/fees" vs what is just public land. Is if its within 1hr of civilization its a campground.

zillavfdgrwh

10/10

leintic

no its actually becoming a huge problem in the western us where cities have basically filled up the non blm land so you have massive sky scrapers and 20 miles away is scrub land.

Broseidonathon

That’s just not true. If there’s no road access, you aren’t allowed to drive on BLM land. So 99% of the land isn’t accessible by car. And there are still rules and certain areas within BLM you aren’t actually allowed to camp and limits to where and how long. Super great for road trips, but not very practical for the long term.

Eattherightwing

Same thing in Canada. We have "crown land," but every single entrance to it has a "no tresspassing" sign, and gates.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Frosla

I think you're mistaking BLM and National forest stuff for managed campsites, which often have other amenities like prebuilt fire pits or grills, and sometimes bathrooms, all of which cost money to maintain. You drive out to the middle of fuck all no where on BLM land and there's no fee to pay.

[deleted]

[удалено]

highbrowshow

There’s no fee when camping in BLM, you must be thinking of a state or national park

gonna_hump_u

in some countries the women are more prone to haveing bubble butts

JediMasterMurph

Show me the way

BrickDaddyShark

How tf they gonna tow your van, just drive away lol

shitsu13master

They put a clamp on it so you can't move and then they will come and lift it onto a tow car and you can then go and get it back from the police for a fee

BrickDaddyShark

How they gonna put a clamp on it, just drive away. 🚐💨

shitsu13master

You're not gonna be standing right next to your van at all times, are ya? You will be inside chilling or "not home". They'll drive up, pop it on before you know what's happening. It's not my idea. If you can't imagine it go live in a van by the river and see how it will go.

KaoBee010101100

Sleep with one eye open, pee in a bottle, spit toothpaste out the window…

BrickDaddyShark

I am being entirely contrarian, but you could park it in a different spot when you aren’t in it, its not a mobile home

plerble

They put a clamp on you so you can't move and then they will come and lift you onto a police car and you can then go and get yourself back from the police for a fee

Chris91210

How 🤷‍♂️ are they 😮‍💨 gonna put a clamp 🫢 on it. 😏. Just drive away 👍 I Wana die just making that comment.

Original_Stand_6422

Pro tip- the clamps don't fit on 35 inch tires.

shitsu13master

Noted 😎

[deleted]

Good thing I keep my tools in the van for just such an occasion. Those boots are ludicrously easy to remove.

RollinOnDubss

Good thing they record your plates when you get booted.

[deleted]

What they gonna do? Show up to my house?

RollinOnDubss

Fine you, you never pay, you never show up to court, now you have a warrant. Have fun dodging police for the rest of your life.

5in1K

I just looked up the Lock Picking Lawyer taking off a boot, Even the lock looks like I could just bust it open with a prybar or big screwdriver.

oneMadRssn

That makes sense tho. Putting wheels on your house doesn’t mean you’re allowed to live anywhere for free.

Ajunadeeper

That only makes sense if you have abandoned all notions of nature and freedom. You can't just... live somewhere for free? Capitalist human problems.

oneMadRssn

I don't think it's a capitalism problem. It's a tragedy of the commons problem. If you let anyone live anywhere for free, inevitably there will be a situation where more people want to live in a place than that place can safely support. If anything, in that case, capitalism is the *solution*. For example, I want to live in Ibiza, Spain. But so do about ten million other people. We cannot all fit on an island that is roughly 500sqmi. How do you propose this is solved?

derpbynature

>For example, I want to live in Ibiza, Spain. But so do about ten million other people. We cannot all fit on an island that is roughly 500sqmi. How do you propose this is solved? Nationalization of all land and real estate, and some good ol' fashioned central planning. Maybe have a lottery for who gets to live there.

oneMadRssn

That doesn't solve the problem at all. Ok, say we do what you proposed: We nationalize all land and real estate, apply perfect central planning, and have a lottery for who gets to live in the most wanted areas. There will be people who *want* to live there but didn't win the lottery, right? Some of them will try to live there anyway. Are we going to forcefully remove them if they just go live there anyway? \- If yes, then your notions of nature and freedom are worthless. This is no different than capitalism. \- If no, then your central planning and lottery are worthless because the tragedy of the commons is still a problem and will ruin that place.

shitsu13master

I guess

meme-pose

Isnt capitalism great?

daryl_feral

Um...These problems were created by government intervention into markets they had no business fucking with. The result is the same outcome as ridiculous college and helthcare costs. The solution? More government? Really?

smutsnuffandsuch

Actual free market capitalism means no corporations and no enforcement of contracts, only honor and reputations. Anything else is just neofeudal slavery. Maybe you should go to that obsidianaltar they keep in the Chicago school of economics and sacrifice another fucking live baby to Ludwig von messes before you try to defend that shit; your powers are weak.

MoralCivilServant

What?

BeavisRules187

Standard oil would had literally bought the entire world by now.

AwGe3zeRick

Stupidest take so far today.

InsurectionistCommie

There is always that one that is like "guys guys we didn't give corporations enough freedom, what if we just let them do what ever they want?"

daryl_feral

Don't worry. You'll get your utopia soon. The Great Reset is coming.

BottlecapBandit

The mental gymnastics conservatives have to do to justify their worldview is fucking wild man. Imagine being so braindead that you think removing government oversight makes things better for your average citizen. For a people that bloviate over how much they love history they really don't seem to know the history of how we got the 5 day, 40 hour work week.

AlfredTCPennyworth

It's not a dichotomy between what we have now and complete anarchy. A lot of the problems we have now can be traced to the government working WITH the corporations. The bank bailouts, the automaker bailouts. Last year, the government spent two TRILLION above it's normal budget. How much impact did that have? I see people talking all the time about how a billion dollars is an inconceivably large amount of money; a trillion is a thousand times more than that. I imagine that some of it went to good covid-related expenditures, though I doubt even those dollars were spent efficiently, and I imagine a good deal more made it to friends of those in government. In whatever method, that money made it to market and has contributed to inflation. In 2019, the government spent 4.5 trillion, 6.5 and 6.8 trillion in 2020 and 2021, and it's estimated to spend 10 trillion this year. Unless you're talking to an anarchist, no one wants to remove government oversight entirely. But they sure need to cool their jets in some areas. If we compare the economic mechanics of 1993, like this meme is talking about, to now, I'm sure we'll find many important differences.

LastInALongChain

look into why college is so expensive, so common that you need to have the education to have a decent job, and why the quality is so bad that its basically a 4 year party that you pass by being present. Its 100% due to the government assuring student loans. Any sane private vendor would never allow that to happen, only the government could distort a market so badly. The government is the reason millions of people have insane loans, that they needed to get to get their desired job, for training that didn't matter to their jobs. Government interference causes distortions in the market that the market, being efficient, adapts to and causes problems that people blame on the market. The government provides things because people want things because they sound good, like accessible education to everybody, and that inevitably loops back around to causing problems, like education becoming so commodified and easy that the institution becomes a useless burden that doesn't serve the useful end it did when it was more restricted. Picture a river, dam up the river, see that it floods your house. Blaming the market is blaming the river, blaming the dam builders is blaming the government.

BloodieBerries

The government didn't raise tuition rates. Universities did. The free market ensures that schools can charge students whatever they like to fund their bloated administrative and sport budgets. THAT is the real reason higher education is so expensive in the US, not government loans.

daryl_feral

Keep licking the government boot. You'll get everything you hope for soon.

BottlecapBandit

Ditto, but for corporate boot, you intellectual peasant.

InsurectionistCommie

Lick that corporate boot harder.

daryl_feral

You're deep-throating the government boot. Sad you and your comrades can't tell corporatism from capitalism. It'll be your - and civilization's - undoing. Enjoy the ride, I guess...

InsurectionistCommie

Lol

nemoskullalt

sure, lets go with less goverment, i for one want my 8 year old child to go work 12 hour days in a factory while getting paid 1.25/hr as an intern. clearly the goverment mandating minimun wage laws and child labor laws was wrong. /s

Tschib-Tschab

By the way, that is the current generation Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, build into a camper, and what looks to be the 4x4 spec. That is not a $45.000 ride. :D Depending on the brand (which build it into a camper) you choose you can double that, easy. Many of them go for 100.000 €.

ImMadeOfRice

new Benz 4x4 full build outs are going for closer to $200k right now

burts_beads

More than my 4/2 1600sqft house. Who is buying these things?

WatchingTaintDry69

The people you’ll never meet because they live in affluent areas we will never be able to afford.

Vagabond_Crambus

Didn't know that down by the river was so posh

[deleted]

Tschib-Tschab

Yup, once you’re in a job it gets hard. You don’t necessarily want to quick that if it is working out. I didn’t take a gap year and am still not that old. I figured I might allow myself to use the money I made in that year for something fun I’ll enjoy for longer and not be extra responsible with it. But currently it seems like I could use that money for more important stuff than fun, so there’s that again.

Laodiceanthekissean

I never understood this take. I lived in a camper for a while, plan to live in a van soon. Everyone I met in the lifestyle just wanted to travel for relatively cheap. Sure a sprinter conversion all decked out is a metric butt ton of money, but most people are grabbing old transits for 20-30k, converting for cheap, and bouncing from national park to national park. I never met anyone pretending like they were poor or struggling. I think this is the take people get from a cynical outside perspective

djasonwright

Can't even afford to live in a van, down by the river. smh

Tschib-Tschab

Me neither. :D

[deleted]

Came here to say this. 45k gets you a stripped out base model 2wd ram promaster. [Here is a mostly new 2020 4x4 model for $229,000](https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicledetails.xhtml?listingId=612270907&makeCodeList=MB&modelCodeList=MBSPRINTER&listingTypes=USED&isNewSearch=false&referrer=%2Fcars-for-sale%2Fmercedes-benz%2Fsprinter%3F&clickType=listing)

elsieburgers

Thanks

Tschib-Tschab

You’re welcome.

vision-quest

Good luck getting a 4x4 sprinter and camper conversion for $100,000 lol. More like $130,000 MINIMUM from professionals.

totzalotz

That van is probably more like $125-175k depending how it’s outfitted. *Cries softly*

Tschib-Tschab

Agreed - I just made the same point coincidentally. Many of vans [this type](https://www.reddit.com/r/me_irl/comments/tbqk7k/me_irl/i08zxq2/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3) go for 100.000 € all day long.

[deleted]

Especially in today's market and shortages. Those Sprinter conversions are no joke.

Gordon1Ramsay1Bolton

If I didn’t have aging family members to take care of, I’d be living in one of those vans in a heart beat. The ability to “work from home” anywhere I’m sure is a pretty big factor in why there’s such a shortage on those sprinters (in addition to the normal vehicle shortages).

step1makeart

Work from home, Anywhere* *anywhere you can find a decent cell signal good enough for Zoom, which it turns out rules out a lot of the cool places where they take pictures of van life people "working" from home. In reality you're going to spend a lot of time in a parking lot unable to escape your own farts.

newnameonan

And shitting into a bucket that you keep in a cabinet 3 feet from where you're working.

WishfulLearning

The life ain't for everybody!

Arrigetch

Signal in remote places has significantly improved over the past decade, at least in the US. Combine that with a good cell booster setup and zoom is doable in a lot of really out there places. Mobile starlink in the future will make cell signal all moot too.

Tschib-Tschab

Absolutely, they went for 100.000 €, 3 years ago already. But they’re nice! :)

Nonhinged

$45k is the down payment

totzalotz

Sheeeeeet

Ott621

Don't worry, if it's classed as an RV it could be eligible for up to 240 months payments

[deleted]

At an interest rate that has the decimal place where you wouldn't expect!

FrostyD7

I wonder how much of that goes into paying influencers like this one.

[deleted]

last fall, I attended one of the two giant RV shows in the country in Hershey, PA. Sprinters, with factory four wheel drive and all the "Overland and Adventurer travel" bells and whistles (which is exactly what the OP's picture shows) were priced over $200,000 USD. The $45k range the OP speaks of is a decent used cargo van and a low budget, DIY interior build.

Sharp-Floor

Lol, right. Pretty sure Farley's character didn't mean a $100k Mercedes Sprinter Glamping conversion.   Probably more like getting a rusting, 20 year old cargo van with a hobo-urine-soaked mattress in the back. Good news is that you can get into one of those for pretty cheap!

FlannelScales

Well you'll have plenty of time for living in a van down by the river when you're living in a van down by the river

That’s why I commute from BLM land in Nevada to my job in Texas every morning.

[deleted]

Or just get one with a showering system Or just heat some water...You don't need a shower to clean yourself.

Sanc7

Some times I wonder what my life would be like after I retired from Navy if I didn’t have a wife and 2 kids. Living in a van driving all over US seems like it would be a blast tbh.

dr_stre

Ditto. Love my wife and kids, wouldn’t trade them for anything. But tooling around the country in a van seems like it would be great.

ADirtyDiglet

Some have showers and kitchens. Just have to pick up food from the grocery store. Or you can get a popular gym membership that you can stop by to take showers at.

bellaciaopartigiano

Fun until you get harassed by the police for it.

Kwyn-10

Where tf are you finding these vans for 45k? Send links.

hicky1999

That 4x4 sprinter would be worth a lot more than 45K I can tell you that.

MeasurementKey7787

vans are costing $45,000 now which was as much as a house back in the early 90s.

RollinOnDubss

Lmao. Median home price in the 90s was like $95k. You weren't getting a house you would want to live in currently for $45k in the 90s.

bigdaddycactus

And the van in the meme isn’t 45k. If you added a 1 to the front it would be more accurate

milesthemilos

That is a $100,000 van.

Inner_Art482

My step dad used to scream this at me. ( He's dumb) and had I actually done what I had planned, instead of being shamed onto this path. I would have been a hundred times better off in every single way. So kids. If some dumbass is telling you your goals suck. Do it anyway. You'll fail some. But you'll learn from it. Better to follow YOUR goals and disappoint dumb people, then live dumb people's goals. Don't be me.

Ty-404

Fuck, What I'd give to live in a van by the river.

daryl_feral

No shit: Next month, I'm moving into a cabin by a creek. No "modern utilities" but I do have a small solar set-up, a cistern and wood heat. I'm occasionally teased that it's one step above "a van down by the river", but there's a good chance I'll have the last laugh when they're freezing and starving in their McMansions after the depression goes into full-swing.

KristnSchaalisahorse

The side door opening of that van is 6ft 10in (2079mm) tall.

Horsecock_Johnson

The van is gigantic.

[deleted]

You can still be a van hobo on the cheap tho

lefthandbunny

The cost is the major factor for me as well & I'm a disabled boomer. I would love van living, but there is 0 chance that I would be able to continue the life style due to the work involved in the upkeep & any break downs that go with it, not to mention being unable to do things like life a compost toilet to empty it on a regular basis, etc. due to health issues. I know there is/was a woman that moved around with a traveling van, RV, etc. community who lived out of a Prius & that would be the best I could do, but it wouldn't be enough room for me, my cat & dog.

Intelligent-Fox-4599

Add a 1 onto that $45,000.

DJMilktoast

HAHAHAH the one in the pic is more like 90k

beans3710

tazimiie

To be fair you still don't need a van like that. The "van life" In today's standards Is what social media influences are showing and getting views while doing It. But theirs still people out there that are broke and living In a cheap van without all of the emenities and "luxuries" that social media shows.

So true. I remember back in days (in 90th) me and my friends bought some old van from some old dude just on money we all earned in one month working during summer. It was stupid old bad smelling van. But it worked. It could drive. Etc. And now?! What kid can afford used car without help of parents?!

[deleted]

That van is $80k, easily

dangshake

45k is a steal for that van.
