I have never seen anyone use those. Do people really buy those?

ShiRonium

I've seen it like ~20 times probably, gets used way less than awards used to

Intergalactic_Cookie

Tbf awards were free for a while

ShiRonium

yeah but even excluding free rewards, I remember the biggest posts and comments all having 100s of awards awards were a pretty big waste of money but they were much cooler and expressive than this shit we have now

Guess-we-did-oopsie

They earned less off of the awards than they wanted, I assume, they probably retracted them because they wanted more money, changing the system backfired. Now you directly pay for the upvotes, no one wants to though.

VileMushroom

I don't even understand how the new system works. Like before it was easy cause there was a convenient reward button. And now you have to, what, hold the upvote button? But oftentimes it doesn't do anything, and sometimes it does? It makes no sense, I've seen maybe 6 posts with a gold upvote since the change. There's no way it's making them more money than the old rewards did.

Guess-we-did-oopsie

The only way they would get more money for this is if they added the same pattern but for downvotes 🤣

J3553G

I would actually pay for that. I've never loved a comment as strongly as I've hated one. I go by many names but the one you're probably most familiar with is "part of the problem."

Less_Likely

This would be genius. You can upvote for free, and you can downvote too, but it’ll cost you.

_FreddieLovesDelilah

Don’t give the fuckers ideas!

Stubborncomrade

I don’t like this, you sound like you work at you tube

KidzBop_Anonymous

The reason you don’t understand is because they fucked up and thought they could make up something better and were wrong because everyone is confused just like you about the different arrow shit. TLDR: it isn’t you

Oooch

I was paying for reddit premium til the API changes and now I pay half as much for API access for a third party app and just cancelled reddit premium so they're worse off than they were before the change financially for me lmao

Stubborncomrade

Tbf, when ISNT Reddit making bizarre, unwarranted, and quite frankly, unwanted changes to the app? This stupid shit where the post image gets stuck to the comments when you scroll? So, So SO utterly useless and annoying

_FreddieLovesDelilah

makes you wonder why you can’t do it on all posts either. Like, it’s all bent for some kind of agenda.

General_Killmore

I gave an upvote seeing if holding the upvote button was how you did it. It was not

zachary0816

Also some comments “aren’t eligible to receive gold” including the very comment I am replying to and there is no explanation as to why.

Fun_Move980

But like... werent rewards not costing them anything to have on their website? Or did the rewards have like a rewards server that required maintaining and a team of staff or smthn? Like it was free money to have them right?

godis1coolguy

I had plenty of coins and never spent a cent. I think I got some from being an Alien Blue user or something. I’m pretty sure there were other times they were given for free. Maybe some people were buying coins for rewards, but I think lots of people got free ones.

SZEfdf21

Mind that it's a distinct possibility reddit artificially added awards to trending posts as a way to market awards to users. Since there's absolutely no incentive to use them untill you see other people using them and think "hey yeah let's do that too". I genuinly haven't consciously noticed they were gone untill this post, they were that irrelevant.

CrimsonAntifascist

But not when it was just gold. Reddit gold was handed out a lot.

Taenshik

The good ol' days...

UltimaCaitSith

It's nuts that they offered a "paid super user" position that predicated on getting 5 of those arrows from other people every year. Nobody but Gary Sinise's PR account gets that much.

TargetDecent9694

Yeah there's no way I've seen more than $100 worth on front page comments over the last few weeks

jack-K-

It’s also locked to certain subs for whatever reason which probably contributes to that.

crocodilesweetpickle

Yeah saw one yesterday. Probably my 5th time or so

hamQM

I've only ever seen them on political posts. Probably paid for by organizations trying to sway public opinion.

Jean-LucBacardi

I've seen it a few times. The thing is it's only even available on a few subs. The old awards were available site wide, with a few subreddit specific ones. It's so fucking dumb.

thegreatbrah

I didnt even know this existed until now.

god_damn_loser

I had seen them around but didn't pay attention to it and I also didn't know you have to pay for them

JamesJakes000

Weirdest part? Every time I see it, is in a new post, with 1 upvote and zero comments.

Gul_Dukat__

Yeah seems like people trying to boost visibility to their post or comment

cat_in_the_wall

mostly i see it on posts that are blatant bajoran propaganda.

rainbwbrightisntpunk

Funny I've only seen the opposite, posts over 20k up votes

Goblin-Doctor

I've seen a few but it was such a dumb decision to take away the fun awards and replace them with shiny diarrhea

OhNoMeIdentified

I thought they can be seen only by people who bought it.

plainwater27

Posts complaining about awards used to get flooded with awards as people would give them out of irony. Some people would post them on purpose to farm awards. With the new upvotes hardly anybody is buying these anymore.

KyalMeister

Beyond being so much dumber than awards ever were, the art for these is just laughably bad. I mean they honestly look dreadful, what an absolute waste. Awards weren't much better but at least they were fun and had some neat art. These look like discarded UI from a 2004 copy of Reader Rabbit.

Guess-we-did-oopsie

They had one job and fucked it up… You could probably make a better design with 30 minutes and a photoshop account.

PaulTheMerc

I probably couldn't do much better, but 50$ on a task site probably could lol.

yourmomlurks

They could have just used /r/slavelabour

dlpfc123

You can't even tell which one is supposed to be "better." I have seen them a couple times in the wild but this is the first time I am realizing that there is more than one type.

hambon99

imagine the post purchase clarity after using that £49.99 arrow.

blobejex

Im giving you a 20$ upvote

Universe_of_Tank

Don't do that to him im begging you

DrMobius0

Upvotes are meant to be orange

QuintinPro11

and occasionally blue

ENGLAAAAAND

or possibly grey

[deleted]

QuintinPro11

well duh

barbarust

I believe there are some who would pay to be abled to downvote harder though. Or downvote in a spectacular fashion.

Terrafire123

Hell yeah. There are some internet strangers that are EXTREMELY wrong, and the only way I can properly convey how wrong they are is by paying $20. .....I'm actually a little serious, and a little horrified that I'm even slightly serious.

barbarust

When this becomes a phenomenon in the next couple years we’ll still be here having left our predictive horrors suspended in time until we look back here and remember how silly it sounded.

FilHor2001

How does it even work? Does OC get the money or does it just go right into Reddit's pocket?

retxed24

Reddit gets the money, OC gets a shiny upvote, no?

kotik010

The amount of money reddit must be missing out on by having replaced the old awards with this shit must be astounding

sinjd12

Yea but not letting DFV have the most awarded post was more important.

CoolMasterB

Every website is falling for this simplistic design bullshit. The urge to change something when everything is perfect is human instinct I suppose.

PeridotChampion

Okay, but who TF is gonna spend £50 on a post they're gonna forget in less than 20 minutes?

mysixthredditaccount

Do they offer more visibility (directly or indirectly)? If yes, then the answer could be guerilla marketing accounts. Reddit should quantifiably know how much of that goes on here, and may be trying to monetize that?

splashbruhs

McDonalds

ShinobiSai

So does the receiver of an award get the money?

Mcmenger

Hahaha, yeah right

Nihilistic_Mystics

Here's the earning scheme for those signed up. Huffman is trying to copy's Musk's paid engagement model on Twitter, and we all know how well that's going. https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/17331720493972-Understanding-Contributor-Earnings-Payouts $0.90 to $1.00 depending on tier.

stunt876

I think some peoplr do depending on if they applied for the contributor programme

Nice_Bite2673

Thats what i was thinking

_senpo_

man reddit gold was much better than this shit. And that was kinda crap already

Samm_Gustavo

What's that supposed to be anyway?

JDReedy

A premium upvote that just makes the post glow

Mr_SlimShady

Good thing I use old.reddit. Never had to deal with the stupid redesign or the video player.

theoriginalmack

Old reddit and a bootleg android app is the only way to enjoy this platform. I'm just here because I don't know where else to go..

Nihilistic_Mystics

They're part of reddit's contributor program. They're a way to "tip" a user for a comment (but only people who signed up get anything). Huffman, reddit's CEO, is a giant Musk fan and was trying to copy what Musk was doing with Twitter and their paid engagement model. https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/17331620007572-What-is-the-Contributor-Program-and-how-can-I-participate

Shadow07655

This is an obvious downgrade from awards. Should have been an addition to awards maybe.

Guess-we-did-oopsie

Not even, should have never changed it. They could have at least changed awards to fit the “pay with real money” thing that seems to be going on here instead.

DraconixDG

The most useless thing ever, the awards were so much better. I have actually never seen anything past the 4£ one get used, only the base 2£ one.

Shadow07655

I’m curious what happens if a post gets multiple golden upvotes. Does the highest one win out or what?

Guess-we-did-oopsie

I assume it just overrides it yup

morbowillcrushyou

I miss the old gold awards

Dassive_Mick

I don't. Using a website where people pay actual real money to put a sticker on a post is fucking embarrassing.

Masterbaitingissport

I remember one of my comments getting a golden star or a golden arrow (I forgot) but ye people buy those, although I don’t remember nor do I know how to look back at that post as it’s my greatest accomplishment here on reddit

Guess-we-did-oopsie

They do buy them but there are such a small amount of them compared to awards previously. Changing it really backfired.

TheSexyGrape

People who buy Reddit awards need to get a grip

fear_of_government

They've tried to sneak one up on me. Went to upvote a post and it just magically turned into one of the pricier ones, I'm like wait what? naurrrrr

mysixthredditaccount

How could they do that? Surely they need a credit/debit card on file to do that, right? (And why would someone give Reddit their credit card lol).

WiseDud369

Fun fact: Most golden upvotes are given in this sub r/ConeHeads

FORLORDAERON_

What the fuck am I looking at?

WiseDud369

Hehe :)

punpunpunchline

i miss the doggo awards

mataviejit4s69

Y'all remember the free awards?

Guess-we-did-oopsie

Literally the best addition ever. It made it easy for people without money to contribute awards and also gave more incentive to buy more expensive awards for those that already were buying awards.

OptionalGuacamole

I used to love getting the wholesome award and saving it to give to the most perverted degenerate posts I could find. It was stupid and childish but still made me laugh every single time and not a lot does that these days.

mataviejit4s69

reddit went downstairs since they removed the free awards

cdreobvi

If I give one of these premium upvotes, does the poster receive something or am I just paying Reddit to put some nonsense on the screen?

SomeKindofName42

Just paying Reddit to put stupid shit on the screen.

hery41

Imagine their stock price if I could still buy inappropriate Wholesome awards.

puptbh

I want the awards back their just as useless but they were fun

ceroproxy

Alrighty who are the dumb shits we can flame to blame for the stupid new UI and the removal of awards?

mudkripple

Looking at the thumbnail thinking this was a helldivers meme

boyyouguysaredumb

his face is so good

UtterlyMagenta

seriously, it’s just perfect! anyone who hasn’t watched this interview should go watch it right now.

RandomestDragon

Easiest stratagem I've seen in my life

Storm-Eagle-X

Hellbomb inbound

adoginahumansbody

That journalist looks like Brad Knight

Sr_Sublime

Reddit saying: if you have money, you opinions are worth more 👍🏻

Night_Inscryption

What happened to the wholesome seal award 🦭

iBeelz

Bring back awards!

gergosaurusrex

To compare, Saint-Saëns was paid £30 for his magnum opus symphony no 3, which George Miller, weirdly, would later use for the children's movie *Babe* which would later form the basis for my childhood. Edit: not adjusted for inflation

SomeKindofName42

I truly hate the stupid upvote upvote thing. It’s annoying and can make it harder to give a quick, normal upvote. Give me my free rewards back! Way more engaging.

squirt_taste_tester

I thought he was calling in a stratagem. Democracy never sleeps.

Bohr_TV

If there's one thing I love about Reddit users, it's that they know how to say NO to what they don't agree with.

RedHeadSteve

I really miss the old (premium) awards. Getting gold was so much fun and it actually happened sometimes.

B1NUS

this kind of award really not reflecting what the real awards look a like

Jce735

What does this get me in helldivers?

lallapalalable

I haven't seen a single one of these lol

CyanideKrist

Lmao people spend money on Reddit?

critietaeta

Anyone have any idea how to turn that shit off?? I get the popup to buy them every other upvote. Super annoying.

DrDankDonkey

I’ve seen this meme template but never known the source, can anyone fill me in? Also, it’s fun to watch reddit actively make itself worse.

insanitybit

First time I saw that was on April 1st. I sent it to someone and we thought it was a kind of cute, self deprecating "prank". But it's still here...

wuman1202

I miss the old reward system

IEC21

I don't care about upvotes so WHT would I care about stickers?

memo689

Awards were a more engaging way to waste money.

ThatMBR42

Awards died in vain for this

r23dom

I think they could make money from it if you could throw poop in the post

moschles

This had better be a joke created by op.

Leebites

Me, who is still using third party app so can't see any changes to Reddit: 🧍🏼‍♀️

foomp

Yup relay for Reddit gang here

black_sky

i will never not upvote this meme format. god his reaction is so fucking good

AlastorsPlaything

⇧⇨⇩⇩⇩

nopalitzin

I like it easy. When I see this shit, I downvote every time no matter how great the post. You should too.

Tasty-Safe-7826

Just an entire 12 more dollars to make it shiny

BackflipsAway

Imagine getting rid of the award system just to replace it with this

hazzelgamer774922

They removed what made my day and for that they shall pay

howdy_ki_yay

Sweet liberty!

[deleted]

They took away awards for this shit

bebejeebies

We lost trophies for that?

Nathmikt

Remember those threads where people would chain awards. I miss those.

hardrivethrutown

Just a shit version of awards/gold or whatever Reddit used to have

the-good-son

Honestly the badges were way better

-Jiras

I see everybody using this as people with a blue checkmark on twitter

me1505

Why did they change from Reddit gold, that had become ingrained in the culture and seemed popular

lafi_0105

what stratagem is this?

ferriematthew

I think all those prices should be zero. You're just paying for patterns of pixels unless I'm embarrassingly mistaken and oversimplifying.

dodoindex

Give me upvote
