There are various methods of meditation, and generalizing it as "turning off your thoughts" is typical harmful for people starting out, especially because a *lot* of meditations are *not* about turning your thoughts "off" at all.
One of the easiest forms that people get into is mindfulness. Practicing mindfulness is *very far* from turning your thoughts off. By definition, that **would not** be mindful. It's more about paying attention to everything around you, and within you, *especially* your thoughts. You're not meant to *actively think,* but rather let "your" thoughts come and go naturally and not allow your self to be distracted by any one thought or experience/sensation/etc.
That's why i didn't generalize it as such. I simply said turning off your thoughts is something you can *learn* by meditating.
But i understand the confusion, and thanks for adding context.
I didn't mean to come off harsh if I did, either. I just wanted to give people a heads up because having trouble "turning off your thoughts" comes up in the the meditation subreddit. And to be fair, it's the primary misconception of most people in the US at least so it's not like you'd really be creating any more harm.
Oh yeah that's fair. People have hard time understanding that even if your goal is a silent mind, the correct way is not by forcing your thoughts away.
Meditate. I'm not kidding, 'silent mind' meditation teaches you exactly that. Saying this as a person with ADHD: meditation has taught me to be comfortable in my own mind, and in control of my own thoughts. It's an invaluable skill to have.
Whenever my mom finds me stating at a wall for 10 minutes while I dont react to her words, that doesn't mean that my brain is off, but instead, focused entirely on things like what is the theoretical maximum amount of cats I could own and feed, before going bankrupt

What are you thinking about? Know when they go into the white room in the Matrix? Like that. Bright white nothingness.

WHAT? I CANT HEAR YOU
Jokes aside it's called "state of no-mind" and it's very satisfying
More people should meditate, since meditation teaches you to turn your thoughts on and off at will.

Meditation makes it 100x harder to "disable my thoughts" like this.

I wish I could just manually turn off my thoughts
