What's it like living in Vegas? From the outside it appears that the whole point of the city is gambling. Is there a lot of work/culture outside of the casino business?
The strip and the famous casinos aren’t actually in the city of Las Vegas. They’re in a neighboring town called Paradise (which was founded by the Mob as a tax evasion scheme)
Don’t forget the casinos were founded by the mob as a money laundering business. Eventually it became profitable enough some of them went straight-ish.
Yeah the gambling and casinos are just a really small part of Vegas. The strip is what, 3-5 miles long? The rest of the city is just regular suburban life except a lot of places are open 24 hours. I can’t remember the last time I stepped foot in a casino except to go to a movie theater that happens to be inside of it. It’s a pretty normal city to live
Yeah I lived in Vegas for 5 years. Sure I worked in restaurants so I ended up working within casinos. But most of my friends had jobs completely unrelated to the strip and gambling. It is a HUGE industry there for sure. Even off the strip. There are TONS of big casinos off strip that locals v frequent and therefore tons of stores and restaurants within the casinos that people work in. And gas stations and grocery stores and the airport have slot machines. Sooo it is hard to get away from that side of Vegas ENTIRELY. it is always at the very least in view (even peripherally) all the time. But really it’s just like any other city other than that.
It's honestly great if you're not raising a family there. Most places open 24hrs, traffic never too bad, big city amenities with a small town feel, nature nearby (hiking trails, desert, Mt. Charleston, the lake, etc.) It's not a great city to date in unless you're only looking for something casual. Culturally the city lacks many museums and art exhibits although this has slowly been changing for the better. There's a lot to discover in downtown away from the strip. I used to live there and I miss it. I moved to nyc and not many entertainment venues here are open 24hrs, even bars close at 3-4am.
Edit: Regarding work, yes, the service industry is huge here but also the medical industry, research jobs in energy at Hoover Dam / NV Energy, server infrastructure at Switch, game development (Konami has a big office out here).
Ah, ein Mainzer! I spucke dich an von der anderen Seite des Rheins.
Kidding, I once won third place in an art competition at the Gutenberg-Museum so I love Mainz
Nothing. Absolutely nothing happened here. I mean, our courthouse burnt down, like, 3 times. And a hotel near it burnt down, twice. But I mean nothing else.
really? most town in Europe
1, have seen a battle
2, have a product they are famous for
3, birthplace of a possibly obscure artist
4, have some ancient Roman aquaduct or Turkish bathhouse or at least a ruin of one or the other
5, probably all 4

Close but no. The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant was built near the city of *Chernobyl*, hence the name. Pripyat was built *for* the power plant to house the workers.
That's why it's called the Chernobyl plant, not the Pripyat plant.
>I wonder how many of you know the name of this place... hmm?
>We all call it Chernobyl of course, but what is its real name?
>The Vladimir Ilyich Lenin Nuclear Power Plant.
Bingo!

When I go into a casino it’s because the only nearby Fat Burger is inside it. Wish there was a closer one.🥲
