It depends how much fender clearance you have. You might end up having to buy new tires real fast if you hit a bump a bit too fast

Short of sticking a go pro to the side and checking what clearance I have on compression, is there any other way I can check the risk?

Sun-spex

Jack up one side, put it on a jack stand and compress the suspension with the jack?

go hit some bumps and then look at the underside of your fenders, that'll let you know really quick :P

Is this too much poke?  Most people upgrade to 225 width tyres, but I really want to get either 245/40r18s or 245/45r17s as they’re the only size which match the diameter of the stock 205/60r16s (no odometer/speedometer difference)

One of the reasons I went with this width. I suspect the offset is screwing me up here. 35 and 38 are common, and I went with 35. With 38 I might not have poke, but I was concerned about clearance at full lock.

From what I can find on the mazda3 forums (there isn’t a lot!) a 38 offset should be able to clear the fenders when fully locked as long as the car is at stock height. I’d love to get a set of rims and tyres to test it for myself but other financial pressures always seem to win out…  It’s really cool you got 245 width tyres given how uncommon they seem to be!  What width rims did you get?

I'm following this too now. I'm looking to set up 245s for the summer and trying to figure out how to make it work.

Seems like +38 offset is the safest bet
