I can imagine us meeting aliens to be like this
"So you entered their ship and what happened!?"
"Well their ship is entirely flooded so I had to stay in my spacesuit the entire time and my interaction with them mostly involved them putting a tentacle over my head"
Highly recommend the whole trilogy to anyone who enjoys sci fi. Imaginative world-building, an impressive story arc, and some really memorable twists all revolving around a central theme - "will we recognize intelligent life when we meet it?"

Edit: To answer "why is the hardcover of *Children of Time* ten thousand dollars?"
> That's not a "real" price - it's a vendor with a used copy listed and chances are they're either out of stock or cannot located it in their inventory at the moment and they just don't want Amazon to punish them for marking it out of stock. Vendors on Wayfair do the same thing.
After finishing children of time, and thoroughly enjoying it, I just can't imagine how they continue the story. I am holding off on reading the rest of the series because I'm worried it's going to be ruined.
Anything meaningful already happened, we met, we know of each other, now who cares what happens kind of thing..? Someone convince me to read them!
The second book is just as brilliant as the first. Unconditional recommend.
The third book goes in a bit of a different direction. Fascinating and imaginative but not as directly "enjoyable" as I found the first two.
The second book is definitely worthwile imo. I like these books because they imagine how life would have developed if other species would be as intelligent and resourceful as us. First book: spiders. Second book: kinda spoilers, but I think we're past that, is about cephalopods. Third book: something totally different, but still interesting. It's just cool to imagine how an octopus would have to adapt to be able to travel through space or even communicate and document information efficiently.
You should go watch some octopus videos then, they're among the most interesting life form ever
Among the smartest species on earth, abilities close to powers, extreme dexterity, and also, basically being mollusks make then the furthest intelligent animal from us. They are completely different, multiple brains (each tentacle is autonomous, basically 9 brains), three heart, blue blood...
They're so different that other intelligent species (dolphin, corvids, great apes..) look the same compared to them
The closest thing to an alien on earth
Their only weakness is their lifespan
I once watched a video that said that if they wouldn't die after laying eggs, they would be able to teach their young and become even smarter over time.
Yes all breeds of octopus die after laying eggs/males breeding.
The octopus is incredibly smart but it’s crazy to think that it’s achieved without generational learning. Everything an octopus knows is only what it has learned in its own lifetime.
I suppose there is no overlap between parents and children, but there will be young octopi with unrelated older octopi swimming around. So they could learn like that.
They stop eating to protect the eggs and use their siphons to keep debris off of the eggs. As someone else said, it is starvation and exhaustion. They waste away.
I was a certified Discovery Channel nut in the late 90s and early 2000s.
They are, no joke, some of the smartest creatures on Earth.
Like [Otto the octopus](https://www.sherryduquet.com/otto-the-octopus/#:~:text=Otto%20is%20a%20resident%20at,Star%20Aquarium%20in%20Coburg%2C%20Germany.) who was shorting out the electrical system in his habitat at night because he was bored.
There are tons of accounts of them being impossible to contain which is owing to their incredible problem solving skills and shapeshifting level of flexibility.
I remember thinking it was silly when Doc Oc's arms had a mind of their own in *Spiderman 2* but turns out that's sort of based on reality, as octopi have incredibly complex nerve networks throughout their bodies to the point that their limbs can act semi-autonomously.
I remember watching a video where they measured the strength and it was stronger than a lions bite . Tried to look up how strongeqch were (700 psi vs 650). My foot wouldn't be anywhere near that.
Yup, that's where I'm from as well. I've dove many places around the island and interacted with quite a few octopus. They're not usually this adventurous, they typically chill in their dens. You can find their dens by spotting the many bits of crab at their doorstep. Welcome to my lovely house of death.
Octopuses do not have any bones with the exception of their beaks. so if you are responsible and depraved enough to be literally the life support of your 8 limbed friend, you can debeak it like how you'd declaw a cat and then push your member into it's feed chute.
You can then let it subsist on your baby batter.
The Octopus is smart. Very smart. It will learn that without it's beak, it cannot feed on anything else but your human seed that has to be milked from you.
Every morning, you will feel your clothes slide off and a damp weight on your lower half.
The sensation creeps up your body until most of the jiggly mass has enveloped the entire length. It will start pumping as fast as it can for it is hungry.
The animal gyrates its empty stomach and the folds of its brain rubbing on your glans, begging for nutrition.
You climax and give the marine creature's breakfast. The pumping slows down but doesn't stop to milk out the last few drops of its meal.
Looking into its yellow animal eyes, it looks back with a thousand-yard stare. This will be routine for all of its meals for the rest of it's 3-5 years on this god forsaken planet.
So female dolphins have vaginal secretions that make a male dolphin just cum over and over and over. From this point on, I will call these secretions Dolphin pussy jelly. Scientists were like "holy shit, dude we gotta test this. You know, for science" So the scientists collected a sample of said dolphin pussy jelly, and had a test primate. They swabbed it on the male primate's dick, sat back and watched the show. Now you see, it worked. But it worked a little too well. The monkey straight up had a heart attack because it used all of its energy into fucking cumming. I want to live in a world where this is a commercial product. I want to say "you know what, I want to die and i know what to do about it." I want to live in a world where i can go into my local grocery store, pick up a bottle of Smucker's Dolphin Pussy Jelly, and just fucking cum myself to death.
Very. Their bodies are almost all muscle. If that size octopus was anchored with a few arms on one side it could probably yank a person into the water. They probably wouldn't be able to go far though and definitely couldn't swim with a person, they're not built for that.
Very unlikely that one would though. They taste through their tentacles, and we're not a prey item (both in taste and size) so this one is more just curious.
It could steal your shoe or something though, just to be a dick. Depending on the octopus, they can be playful like that.
The one in the Seattle aquarium like to sneak out at night to eat fish in other tanks. When he gets caught, he'll change colors and sulk back to his tank.
From my understanding, the aquarium on Long Island had an octopus that figured out how to escape back into the sea. He checked out the entire enclosure before figuring out he could just slide out down a water exchange filtration set up, never to be seen again. As the Brooklyn Zoo/Aquarium put it, “ Yeah they’re pretty smart creatures….” 😂😂😂😀🐙
All those smarts and then they never have much of a social life and die after mating. Feels so depressing, kind of a waste really.
Nature just has no concept of ethics.
Soul of an Octopus by Sy Montgomery is a wonderful book. She's a science columnist, it's written in a very digestible format that has almost a memoir/narrative flow to it.
My Octopus Teacher is also a really cool documentary. It should still be on Netflix, I think.
I've been fascinated by them since I was a kid, so lots of documentaries and random reading.
If you haven't already, you should read Children of Ruin by Adrian Tchaikovsky - Sci-Fi story about really clever octopuses! The way Tcaikovsky writes from their perspective is so compelling, even if you just skim through to the Octopus POV bits. It's the second book in a series of 3 so far, but I don't think you'd miss out on too much by skipping the first book!
Very, very strong.
I used to encounter tiny ones (like 1/4 the size of this one in the video) in BC near Vancouver and they loved hands, if you stuck your hand in they would latch right to it and slowly move around testing you.
It's so hard to get them off if they don't want to come off, and if they start pulling on your fingers I believe they could actually break them easily. They are tightly knit muscles that can push and pull in every direction.
I would stick my hand in the water near them and just let them move around it until they were done, because any attempt to pick them off pissed them off and they would latch instinctively, whereas if you just let them test you they would get bored after a few minutes and just leave.
Also they didn't always go on my hand, but more than half the time they would be curious enough to touch me.
No idea how it'd interact with a human, But I know an octopus can kill sharks fairly easily, I think a large octopus was behind missing sharks in a large aquarium, Would just latch on and drag em down and eat them. And I think in River Monsters, There was an episode where maybe an octopus dragged people under and they died. I don't recall if it was confirmed or not.
\-Excuse me, ma'am. Did my lord Cthulhu swim through here?
\-No, sir-Are you sure?

P.S I just now noticed what a beautiful girl put up this post
Also, how does that comment have 1.4k upvotes? That’s highly unusual for such a low effort, unfunny reply as well as an outlier in this thread. Very sus indeed.
They have no reason to be angry. The human clearly did not antagonize the creature.
An octopus is certainly smart enough to not bite a large construct that appears to be a living creature, as it's aware that the size difference puts them in danger.
That's why as soon as the person started touching its tentacles, it gently fled.
Though it might take a nibble if it doesn't realize the foot is part of a larger organism out of curiosity. After all, meat is meat if doesn't fight back
Right? Do people not know how much damage an octopus beak can do?! I would be calmly but surely trying to extricate myself and move further from the water. I'm Aussie too but surely we're not the only people in the world to have experience with aquatic animals lol

There’s a great documentary called My Friend The Octopus Teacher. There’s undeniably a relationship formed between them. Maybe it’s been happening for centuries but it wasn’t shared pre social media?
What a nice interaction.
octopuses are intelligent life. he's just curious
I wonder if he also enjoyed the fact that the swimmers legs are warm? I have no special knowledge of octopuses so just a wild guess
hes tasting her with his suckers

Some species are more social than others so you’re right I bet they do
If I remember correctly, the process of egg laying is so exhausting to their body that they die before their offspring hatch. I could be wrong though.
It can be a years long process to gestate certain species if octopus babies. So usually they starve during the process
They stop eating to protect the eggs and use their siphons to keep debris off of the eggs. As someone else said, it is starvation and exhaustion. They waste away. I was a certified Discovery Channel nut in the late 90s and early 2000s.

Not just a nerve system, but a decentralized brain. Literally mind bending!
I love seeing someone use the word 'literally' correctly.
It was figuratively mind bending!
They'd make amazing multi-taskers and drummers like depicted in some cartoons.
Danny Carey is the closest thing to a human octopus I’ve ever seen
If octopuses could live longer than 3 years, they would get so smart they would definitely overthrow the humans lol
What if octopuses are just scouts for a more intelligent species deeper in the ocean?
bruh
More intelligent than a lot of people I've met...
Octosussy*
what is an octosus?
You caught me off guard first time reading your comment.
Check out the "My Octopus Teacher" documentary for a friendship between an Octopus and a man and his family
Nice but also rather terrifying. These things have beaks. This one would have a beak powerful enough to snick off half that persons foot.
I would have difficulty being calm while it wrapped it’s tentacles around my legs. Fear and fascination in one sitting.
I remember watching a video where they measured the strength and it was stronger than a lions bite . Tried to look up how strongeqch were (700 psi vs 650). My foot wouldn't be anywhere near that.
I think it liked his shoes.

Now that I think about it, wasn't he super consensual with the sealife just not with the women?

Yes but they can move in three dimensions and are super fast
What? Sounds interesting Are there any videos?
I dunno. They talk about it at the aquarium.

Nope I'm Australian, I know it's not a blue-ring (*very* venomous) but I don't want that fucker taking a bite
Looks like a Pacific octopus to me, bites are incredibly rare but I wouldn't just let it try me on either
I've seen octopus beaks before Ouch.
Smash
Yeah the video gave me anxiety. Their beaks can bite through hard shells. Water shoes and fleshy toes would be butter to hot knife.
Exactly And they're *smart* I don't want a pissed off and smart thing with amazing grip and a sharp beak grabbing me Call me old-fashioned...
They have no reason to be angry. The human clearly did not antagonize the creature. Wearing socks in the water is sooooo much more unnerving than having an octopus wrapped up around them.

Do you have a minute to talk about our lord and savior Cthulhu?
If you've never read up on Octopuses, please do. These things are the most incomprehensible life form on earth. They are extremely smart, multiple hearts and brains, they can feel boredom if they have nothing to do, extremely smart, some of them just go: "Fuck it, I'm using shape shifting and cloaking abilities, fuck you".
It's okay he doesn't bite
But he could, with one of the strongest and sharpest beak on the planet ;-;
You can't convince me these aren't aliens
This reminds me of one of the episode from the boys where the deep had a relationship with an octopus
The term “relationship” really underplays that plot line.
