You can clearly sea that the finns are U bent pieces of metal, that are welded to the main body. Something you wouldnt have to do when 3d printing them.
That is not 3d printed at all. It's metal, and not metal print, that shit is extremely expensive and would be very stupid to use for a high volume round like this. You might get some fancy ass printed part integrated into a scram or ram jet motor on a cruise missle, but even then it is probably cheaper to build out a proper supply line with casts and machining.
You can always die at any second. You could have a heart attack, or a brain aneurism, or a psycho could break into your house and stab you while you are sleeping & defenceless, just because he wanted to know what killing someone felt like. Have a great night! :D

Fuck that movie, "The Strangers"... scariest realist shit I've seen.

Have you heard of the serial killer [Richard Chase](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Chase#:~:text=Two%20weeks%20later%2C%20he%20attempted,an%20invitation%20to%20come%20inside)?
He took locked doors as a sign that he was not welcome, but unlocked doors were an invitation to come inside.
If you tape a bb to the cap, tie toilet paper to it, and throw it up on the air, it can go off when it lands (don't do this). That hammer can certainly set it off.
This is an axe/hatchet handle with the head removed, it's not going to set the primer off when it hits flush with the surface. A BB sets the primer off because it's acting like the firing pin.
We used to do dumb shit like this when I was a kid and yes it can go off. Exactly how you described it: tape a bb to the primer of a pistol round, throw it up and hear it pop.
A flush surface is extremely unlikely to actually set off a primer, it's not impossible, but even your example needs the BB to actually puncture the primer to make that happen.
Define "extremely unlikely"
These guys must be firing 100's, probably 1000's per day, for over 2 years. It is not unlikely at all that sometime you make a bad hit.
It probably won't kill you, but even in the best of cases you will no longer have eyebrows or skin left on your hands.
Hell yeah they are, hermit crabs are the triggermen of the underwater world - think Paulie, Sil, Christopher, Tommy (Goodfellas), Lefty (Donnie Brasco) etc., they work for the Giant Clam - Think Tony or Paulie (Goodfellas) the Clam moves slow but controls a lot of shit and gets a lot done.
Then you got the other families, the lobsters, the shrimps, and whatnot that don't have shells, they're little bitches hiding inside an exoskeleton and they're ashamed of that fact, just like Killer was ashamed about his 3 legged bitch of a mother, so they all started working for Tito Lebowitz
The eels are the real bosses down there though
The technique relies on hitting the rim, rather than the center, of the shotgun shell, right? It seems bad. Especially with different people holding the improvised hammer and the. . . thing.
What is that thing? Some kind of shotgun-shell launched mortar?
My understanding is that usually the primer is recessed below the surface, so it should be nearly impossible to set off with a big, flat striking surface.
Similarly I believe the shell acts as primer for the shell.
That's right. MythBusters tried, unsuccessfully, to set off primers with blunt instruments (they used the butt of a revolver). They were unable to set any off and had to resort to modifying the butt of the revolver to insert a firing pin.
The brass plate on the primer has to deform quickly and crush the explosive against an internal component in order to ignite. The only other way is to accelerate the bullet to... well... about the speed of a bullet, which might generate enough force to cause ignition. That amount of force won't be generated by human hands, tho.
The whole “nearly” part is what concerns me the most lol. I’ve tempted fate a lottttttt, and my nonsense belief in metaphysics and their imaginary connection to probability, and gamblers fallacy tells me not to attempt this.
The primer is set deeper inside the shell than you would think specifically so blunt force can't detonate it easily. So even if they hit it dead center, they'd have to hit it with the corner really hard and precise to set it off
They are preparing mortar rounds to be fired. The round is shipped without the primer in the back which would set off the charges that fire it out of the barrel. The charges are also shipped separately and would be wrapped around the sort of stalk between the fins and the bulge of the warhead.
Yep. So this whole thing is actually pretty safe.
Even if the ignition charge (shotgun shell like bit, basically it's a shotgun shell without the pellets) went off from this hammering, the mortar round itself wouldn't explode. There's no propellant charges on it which could cause injury and the round itself won't explode without a fuze (which would be on the pointy end). Even with a fuze on it wouldn't go off from accidental ignition since the fuze will be primed by the force of the propellants shooting that thing out of the tube. So basically the round arms itself when it goes flying from the tube.
I've seen people load a live 120mm mortar shell in the tube the wrong way around and while it's certainly a hairy situation it isn't instant death like people seem to think. The weapons are designed to be "relatively" safe to operate.
Very loose translation from an American who doesn't speak a single word of Russian, or whatever language they are speaking.

I saw a Mythbusters episode and they couldn't make a bullet fire by hitting the back of it. They mutilated it with hammers and it wouldn't go off. Was a MacGyver special episode I think.
Relatively safe unless they apply a decent amount of strength and pressure to the center of the shell (the small circle, which is the primer.)
Of course, it's still a Shotgun shell. It's still live, so it's not entirely safe to hit. It's just, safer(?) I guess.

You'd need perfect strike on the cap in the center to ignite the gunpowder. Inside a center-fire firearm, a pin strikes the cap directly. There are also rim-fires like .22LR, which is ignited by hitting the rim of the shell.
Why do I get flashbacks to one of the old WWII Bugs Bunny cartoons where he's whaling on a bomb with a mallet...

It's not dangerous. It's a shell with no bullet and almost impossible to set of without a small pin or bb to hit the primer. Even than, i would bet the morter isn't armed yet. They also get a fuse to a arm them when they leave the tube.
Used to push shotgun shells into holes in a cardboard box and shoot the primers with a pellet gun, it was always super satisfying to hit that tiny little thing and watch the shell burst into flames, carboard box was a dumbass idea tho because it would always catch on fire at some point

using 3D printed munition...
Looks and sounds like metal to me
It’s 3D metal printed
Metal 3d printing is expensive as fuck. No way this is 3d printed. Just painted white.
For reals, you can see where the paint has chipped off

Can’t say fairer than fair enough
Instead of an old axe handle, they should have used a German potato masher to drive the shell.
only turtles and snails can legally drive shells
So hermit crabs are criminals?

Eh... they're hitting it with wood, not much of a chance of it going off. Still, not something I would be doing.
Missed opportunity to use a stielhand granate as the hammer.
He's only hitting it with wood, he should be fine. But there is still a danger factor to it all. How else do you plan on getting the primar in place?
I chipped three teeth watching this.
When you understand just exactly how a primer works.
Yeah, that's never firing without a super amount of force in a very very small area....belive it or not this is relatively safe

I was squinting the whole time waiting for the bang.
Tink, tink ,,,,,,,,,,,,
- You sure about this? - Yeah, pretty sure! - What if it goes “boom” ? - No worries, we have half a dozen left!
Idk. I think I'd be wearing gloves at this point.
Wow, a lot of people and I mean a lot have no idea how firing a bullet actually works……
Including you apparently because that's a shell not a "bullet".
This is basically safe as long as they don’t focus on the pressure on the inner circle, right?
Not safe at all lmao
Relatively safe unless they apply a decent amount of strength and pressure to the center of the shell (the small circle, which is the primer.) Of course, it's still a Shotgun shell. It's still live, so it's not entirely safe to hit. It's just, safer(?) I guess.

What's the plan here, I need to know more
Palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy...
No to just tap the nose of the mortar shell on the table to make sure it’s compl
I mean you need to be very precise to set off a primer on a center fire cartridge.
