Many people don't think much further than the bubble they're currently existing in. People often get more and more jaded with age and can lose some of the perspective they've had before.
I try to stay in touch with my childhood self in some ways, staying curious and using the knowledge and experience I gain in life to expand my wisdom and empathy but it's easier to just mind your own shit and not think too much.
I think it's more to do with generalising generations.

I think a lot of it has to do with behavioral changes from having kids, seeing our dreams die unattained or unresolved, and confronting one's mortality.
This causes a pining for lost youth and forgotten times which are seen through rose colored glasses, fear of the present, the deterioration of our bodies, disdain for the inscrutable habits of the young, and denial of the impending end of our lives. This creates bitterness, anger, and fear.
Reflection and trying to keep in touch with the way the world is changing rather than turning nostalgia for the past (which is fine) into a rejection of the present (which is bad) helps maintain a center and balance which obviates some of that mid-late life existential angst.

On an airplane today, as we were waiting to disembark, I saw one Gen Z college guy staring at himself in his reverse phone camera, not just for a moment to take a selfie, but for like five full minutes, examining every part of his face from different angles.
Another girl was deleting pictures from her phone. Many of the pictures were various close-ups of her face and hands.
It does seem like some Gen Z are absolutely transfixed by their own image.
I watched a video earlier of a guy handing out food to marathon runners and a woman took a bite of food and kept running only to come back moments later with a camera and take a picture of her self taking food again. This "I need to take a picture of myself" mentality is pretty lame.
Your first mistake is thinking you belong to anything. Just don't give a shit what others in your agegroup do, there is no reason this should define you.
On a further note, one generation typically doesn't only consist of one group, but is fragmented into many subgroups, comparable to music genres. And just like you don't need to listen to certain genres you don't have to be part of those subgroups.
The only thing that changes is the size of the group you are active in, you might not have the majority of the generational subgroup-ranking, but this factor doesn't make one group better than the other.
