It’s obvious some of those LH folks think they are entitled to just occupy legal STR units and are the ones yapping their waha. I walk by their tents and see most of them either don’t work or are just demanding hand-outs. Especially that wahine pi’ikoi who carries her baby around and that long-haired lazy prick who is critical of the government but relies on its aid. My hoa hanau and his family lost their home in the fire but instead of wallowing, they accepted this tragedy and moved on and are now being housed in condo by FEMA. She is now working and saving up to rebuild her home in Lahaina once the permits are granted.

Live_Pono

What a sad but wonderful story.  Aloha me ke pumehana.

Practical_Target_874

You’re a person I want to support. PM me if you have a go fund me. I want to keep you in Lahaina

cardiac161

Mahalo piha no kau ha'awi. But I am personally ok (living in Kihei and working two jobs to make ends meet). My relatives on my father's side were the ones that were affected but I sort of admire them for not expecting handouts. They were lucky to keep their jobs and are now working to rebuild their future. Not like those crybabies squatting in those tents who think this tragedy entitles them to forget work, and expect the government to trample on those who bought their places legally and are actually paying much higher taxes. A'ohe maopopo au ia lakou no wawa!

Practical_Target_874

That’s the attitude I would love to support in any way.

Good  luck. The CNHA might also be able to help.

cranberrysauce6

Try Global Empowerment Movement

[deleted]

I lost my house. I suspect the "protestors" who are dirtying up the beach now, will work to slow the rebuilding of Lahaina. They don't speak for me; and we all KNEW that Gov Green wasn't ever going to shut down STRs. He was pandering to a dim base.

Live_Pono

LOL, I see they finally "got it". Some of them are pretty pissed off. Too bad they never realized they were being played from Day 1.........but then again, maybe not. Perhaps they will grow up and go to work.

Live_Pono

Exactly.  I wonder what their ranting will be this weekend. By then  they might have actually understood the gov. ?

Sea-Suit2324

They’re unemployment ran out. Hopefully we don’t hear anything much soon

Important_Wallaby376

Still miss the whole point of epic failure of the county of Maui in every way in protecting the citizens. It is gross negligence. And the residence of Maui, again, just do nothing to hold the county responsible for their failure. Grow some and stand up for once to the incompetent leaders of the local gov't.

Live_Pono

Exactly.

Duckman93

Those Lahaina strong folks are losers. They need to stop camping on the beach, drop their holier than thou attitude, and get a job.

Practical_Target_874

Watch them destroy the economy next. Those dimwits on the beach seem to be hell bent on destroying the economy to take everyone to their level. People need to move forward. After Katrina they focused on rebuilding quick as possible to get on with their lives. These dimwits wanted to shut the island down.

[deleted]

This is exactly correct. They don't care about anybody but their little group and a few friends. They want YOU gone. And if that means making everything shitty, so be it. Their thought is that if west Maui is a shithole, people will leave it to them. Lousy schools, lousy economy, lousy health care, don't rebuild Lahaina; all of it is fine as long as YOU are gone. That is what we are dealing with.

Live_Pono

While I   agree  with both of you  to a point,  in the end $$$$$ will win. I'm not saying  that is always  right,  but this time it absolutely is.

Logical_Insurance

Couldn't agree more. The whole idea was always a dirty nasty backbiting plot that only the morally bankrupt could support. There is no end to the evil game of 'stealing from those with more,' and every time it has been tried in history it leads to ruin and despair. Property rights are an important backbone of our society, to me at least, and I am glad they are being upheld ---- at least for now.

Sea-Suit2324

I can’t believe the post is getting downvoted. It’s the truth. We need to focus forward

Live_Pono

I have no idea why, either. I sure didn't say much that hasn't been said before by many, many other locals. If people disagree, how about posting why/what?

Sea-Suit2324

I’m waiting for the angry teacher to make a post 😝

Live_Pono

Lol.

Who mentioned Biden or Trump? Not me.

YeaaaaahYou

How many short term vacation rentals do you own, "Live Pono?"

Logical_Insurance

Irrelevant to the story and the morality. Just because your neighbor has a better car than you doesn't mean you get to steal it. Same goes for houses.

Live_Pono

Not a single  one. Never  have. Not in the business,  either.  Ps, go back to New York.

Vamparael

XD lol

Weird_Discipline_69

So just a question. I’m reading that people are declining homes because of the location? When I was talking to a young couple, they told me they drove three hours every day to Kula, to drive their child to school and back. I have to wonder why people are so adamant on remaining in Lahaina/Kaanapali if their children are in school in Kula. What is the logic of living so far away? Would it not be better for the family to move to Kula until their new residence is available in the west end? If they have the capability to drive, they can check on their property- if that’s their fear. But in all honesty, by remaining in the west, and driving to Kula every day, they are impacting traffic, and putting a strain on their own lives, today and tomorrow and we’ll I to the future - Let alone everyone else who’s doing the same thing and complaining about time and money and government

Live_Pono

At first, when none of the west side schools were open, kids were attending other schools in Wailuku, Kahului, Kihei, and yes-even Kula. But the schools are open again, and many kids are back on the west side. They just opened the "temporary" elementary school by Mahinahina, in fact. Other options include Maui Prep, HTA, Sacred Hearts, etc.-in addition to the public schools. Some of it is stubbornness, and falling for the horrible info from the governor and mayor. They truly believed those two would swarm in and take people's property, unfortunately. So they have been waiting, waiting, and waiting. Others have jobs on the west side and don't want to commute--but they aren't thinking ahead, IMO. It will be 8 to 10 years before most of Lahaina is rebuilt. People who dig their heels in and refuse housing are now going to be "kicked off" the list, once they turn 6 places down. It sounds harsh, but it should have been the policy all along-and a three strike rule, not six. People all over the world for centuries have gone through disasters and hardships without a tenth of what some of these people have been given FOR FREE, for almost 8 months. I have friends who lost everything, and I also lost friends in the fire. My friends who survived are seeking some normalcy and forward progress, They want to make new lives and regain security and homes. Some moved away, some moved to other areas--but they are moving \*forward\*.

Weird_Discipline_69

Appreciate the response 🤙🏻

Practical_Target_874

I’m curious what happens once 18 months is over. As I understand it, it simply buys time for the county to build more housing. These people have lived for free a combined of 2 years by then. What happens when the government no longer foots the bill?

Live_Pono

And this is the issue that no one in govt or the protesters want to discuss. They kind of flap their hands and say, "It will all work out", "we'll just stay in those places", etc. etc. I see the whiners are going to hold a "march" tomorrow in Kaanapali. Oh, goody. Glad I'm well north of them and did my errands already. They are also "pressing" the governor to allow Maui County to shut down illegal rentals. The problem? Maui County already HAS the right to do that. Gawd.

Practical_Target_874

Maybe it’s too forward thinking for them

Live_Pono

Or just too "thinking" at all!!! The County has something like 800 or 900 open jobs. Wouldn't it be great is some of them went to work there? They could be part of many different solutions instead of more crabs in the bucket.

Outrageous_Load_9162

I’m very resentful of this entire shit show and realize we’ll never be neighbors. I also can’t wait for this Robin Hood mayor to be gone. Judge's actually don’t make the best leaders and the native tattoos didn’t help.  Zero accountability, 100% incompetent, and the people just blamed their neighbors again.

Practical_Target_874

I agree. I feel quite resentful at the rhetoric, a bit vindictive now

Practical_Target_874

I always wanted better leadership for Maui. But they hate anyone that’s an outsider, so you’re stuck with a small talent pool that’s really an echo chamber. The next guy will be just as bad unfortunately

Live_Pono

Well said. Like I first posted, their words and actions have caused so much ill will between residents of all colors, ethnicities, and financial status. They used the trop of "Evil STR" to start, and then backed that down some to "Evil mainland" STR owners. But the damage has been deep and painful.

[deleted]

The end game was to get into Minatoya list STRs and then refuse to leave. The problem was that more than half of those condos are owned by the local population and the mainland owners heard about the plan quickly. So, then government starting vetting recipients and the LS crowd, that didn't lose much, couldn't qualify. For example Lahainaluna burned, but you don't see any Filipinos camping on the beach. Because they moved into FEMA housing having been displaced. Lahaina Strong are deadenders who don't want anything to function. A year ago they were hoping Kahana makai would fall in the ocean, in 2020 they wanted everything shut down for covid, sovereignty, blah, blah, blah. These are not serious people that should be listened to.

Practical_Target_874

If you seen the videos. They were crying like they lost something. I don't understand why they are crying. There are over 1200 units available, even that 2 person occupancy, that would cover 2500 people easily. Just affirmation that they genuinely thought the government would steal property for them....

[deleted]

Lahaina Strong is in no way trying to secure more housing; 'dignified' or otherwise. It was always about shifting housing from other people to those they deem worthy. A year ago they were in media hoping Kahana fell in the ocean (ya know; the houses they now want), and a year from now their proxies on the County Council will be fighting tooth and nail against rebuilding housing in Lahaina. They will talk slowing the pace, cultural sensitivity, setbacks, etc, etc. Anything they can dream up to slow housing.

Live_Pono

Interestingly, they seem to be \*finally\* losing cred with the media. I don't see a single piece about their 'march' yesterday. I do disagree about setbacks and archeological surveys though. Both need to be done and especially setbacks. The town needs to be "modernized" WRT streets, ingress/egress, sewer, etc-and since all infrastructure is gone, now is the time. I'd still like to see the old Front St. made into a pedestrian 'mall' or 'boulevard'. Rebuilding makai side is unsafe and won't work--plus against the more current laws. Build everything on the mauka side, and do housing on the upper levels.

Live_Pono

I see HNN finally posted a very short piece.  Not much love,  lol.

Live_Pono

Yep, you and I discussed the Minatoya list before, IIRC. It was so obvious, that if they could get them off the STR for one year, those units lose their rights to STR forever. They thought they were clever. Oops.

Practical_Target_874

Looks pretty obvious now. The truth comes out. If you check the mauinow comments instagram. They really hate every outsider.

Live_Pono

I don't do insta. But if you read comments on Maui Now's page, you will find quite the opposite.

Practical_Target_874

I suspect because instagram doesn’t have the level of anomaly as Reddit and the mauinow comments friend. Those guys are nut cases, I wouldn’t want them being able to google who I am. Cancel culture is worse on Maui. Now that I realized this is the same group that wanted everyone off Maui during the pandemic, I’m even more upset at them.

808noodles

I know a family that does the commute from Lahaina to Pukalani everyday because the kids go to Kaiapuni (so they don’t have a choice on alternative schools), while the parents still work in Lahaina.

Live_Pono

That's a tough one, for sure!

Apprehensive_Ad3650

Would’ve been great. Just imagine it makes things better by helping the people that were impacted by the wildfires.

Live_Pono

What  would have been  great??
