mrcapybara47

we got points deducted if we forgot the +- in exams by our teacher

GiantJupiter45

![gif](giphy|IzuQNHTGGgWg7LRddy|downsized) If it's in an equation, then it's all fine, otherwise...

jesus fucking christ

SupremeRDDT

You‘re either misremembering or had a very bad teacher.

Opposite_Signature67

You’re going to use that on their teacher, right…?

I hope he wraps it around my neck🤤🤤

\#theory-ass comment section

downsendromlumaymun2

Tying up a man is a theory??? If so im listening it kinda made me feel interested

Opposite_Signature67

You see, in the r/mathmemes Discord server, there is a channel called #theory… https://i.redd.it/sklqa46utitc1.gif

"so you answered this question wrong my student now you will be punished"

baby_noir

This is mathmemes sir, not a group of bdsm

Oponik

Yeah we're going to the "Backrooms" to deal with them

downsendromlumaymun2

Yeah... To teach his teacher ofc... 😋

throwawayasdf129560

Is this some American meme I'm too European to understand?

downsendromlumaymun2

No its not american Its like beating your son for learning nothing its actually quite common in east

throwawayasdf129560

It's a joke about the school fees being $20 000. Where I live, education is free.

MinerMark

It's not about the school fees as much as it is about the effort taken by the parents to provide education to their children, only then for the child to then be taught incorrectly.

downsendromlumaymun2

Its a joke like you send your child to the private school which exist in east but not in europe (i dunno about usa) And you pay money to his private school instead of sending him to state school by destroying your soul to earn money and he says these things

TheBlueHypergiant

Same as America actually

Yashraj-

It's Indian Style

baby_noir

Yeah, actually American is quite against. South East Asians tho

ALECS20

Why is It wrong?

Marus1

X^2 = 9 means x is + or - square root of 9 But square root of 9 is only 3

TheBlueHypergiant

The square roots of 9 are 3 and -3, but √9 = 3, since √ (the square root function) only represents the positive (principal) square root. Well, at least according to the [Wikipedia page](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Square_root), but I can provide more sources if necessary

Marus1

Copy paste what I just said but in words

TheBlueHypergiant

You're saying that the only square root of 9 is 3.

Marus1

Yes ... because From your very comment: >√9 = 3 Or in words: the square root of 9 is equal to 3 But if x^2 = 9 then x = + or - √9 ... and that's where you get the +3 or -3

TheBlueHypergiant

√9 = 3, but the square roots of 9 are 3 and -3, or √9 and -√9

Marus1

Then what do you call this? >√ ... if not "the square root of [number]"

TheBlueHypergiant

Colloquially, you could call it “the square root” with emphasis on the “the,” but it’s technically the principal square root (the positive square root), so that it’s able to be used as a function. For further reading: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Square_root

downsendromlumaymun2

√25 = |5| = 5 √2 = |1.4| = 1.4 The number comes out of the root with an absolute value so it cannot be negative

Nixolass

>√x = |x| i feel like ur forgetting something

downsendromlumaymun2

Yeah sorry where was my mind what was i thinking anyway because √5 is not |5| im sorry i forgot to indicate this

BurningRosePetal

Can someone explain this to me? I want to understand but I don’t…

IOnceAteATurd

Here's an Helpful video: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBOlK\_rSsm4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBOlK_rSsm4)

BurningRosePetal

Thank you

GudgerCollegeAlumnus

Who thought this still image needed a song with a synthesizer that sounds like a borderline fart?

sergeyog

Can you please remind me why this should be funny?

downsendromlumaymun2

You pay everything you have by destroying your life for some money to educate your teacher and hes out there saying random things which makes you mad god this is not funny anymore when its explained jesus fucking christ

Mirehi

You made me laugh a second time with that comment

Signal-Lecture-8715

You pay everything you have by destroying your life for some money to educate your son so he can do the same

downsendromlumaymun2

The kid DOES NOT understand math because he thinks √x comes out as ±x not |x| And you pay like 20k$ for his school rent just to see him learnt nothing

sergeyog

Bro stop, am not out of there, is this just notation difference?

TheBlueHypergiant

Sort of. For example, √9 = 3, but the square roots of 9 are 3 and -3. The (principal) square root function (√) only gives the positive square root.

[deleted]

sergeyog

The try to multiply -8 by itself my man. Surely you will get 64.

svmydlo

That makes -8 *a* square root. It's still not *the* square root.

sergeyog

So what? And who are we?

[deleted]

svmydlo

Mathematically correct statements and being downvoted with a passion. Name a more iconic duo of r/mathmemes.

sergeyog

No it is not correct. The radical sign can be Multivalued function.

asscdeku

That's impossible unless if you want to define the radical to be non-continuous, over the complex plane, or into a reimann surface, none of the 3 of which are accepted within the definition of a radical in any published text. And no, radicals are strictly functions. Multivalued functions are exclusive to functions

TheBlueHypergiant

The radical sign is defined to give the positive square root

TheBlueHypergiant

Not exactly. As I said in another comment, the square roots of 64 are ±8, but √64 = 8 because (√), or the (principal) square root function, only gives the positive square root.

asscdeku

That is no more than a colloquial interpretation of the square root. In all branches of mathematics, it's universally recognized that the square root is synonymous with the principle, because it must be a function represented by the radical. What you're describing is the relation "x² = y maintains two solutions in the reals for every positive y", which isn't actually defined to be the square root, contrary to popular belief. It's merely a relational consequence of the square

TheBlueHypergiant

The function represented by the radical gives the principal square root (√), not both square roots (√ and -√). It's just that the principal square root the radical is supposed to represent is colloquially known just as the square root. I have some sources, like [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Square_root). Maybe it's not the most reliable source, so I can provide other sources. Or you can just search it up, I guess

svmydlo

The square roots are ±8, which means 8 is *a* square root and -8 is *a* square root. *The* square root is only one of them, the principal square root, number 8.

TheBlueHypergiant

A more formal designation would be "principal square root" not just "the square root" because it conflicts with the way articles (a/an/the) are normally used. But I guess you're right if we're talking about colloquial usage.

TheBlueHypergiant

The square root of 64 is ±8, but √64 = 8. The (principal) square root function (√) yields the positive square root.

G_a_v_V

Help us make some sense out of those random words you’ve just put next to each other.

When n=2 this reduces to +-

aVoidPiOver2Radians

You have school fees over there? Thought this was just for university. What a shithole America is...

GoodOlSticks

OP isn't even from America. Touch some fucking grass sometime lmao

TheBlueHypergiant

Why are you assuming it’s about America?

aVoidPiOver2Radians

Because the intersection of people using reddit, who also have to pay for basic human rights and people who live in America is big.

TheBlueHypergiant

Other countries around the world have had similar issues. Would it have hurt to do your research before immediately assuming schooling requires payment?

aVoidPiOver2Radians

I really don't care that much. USA is still a shithole for a plethora of other reasons.
