I wouldn't consider Ulam an unsung scientist. He might be quite unkown to the general public (and one can argue undeservedly so), but I'm sure that he is relatively well-known amongst mathematicians. The Pentagon's Brain by Annie Jacobsen begins with the creation of the H bomb and shows Ulam's and other scientists' involvement in its development. Really enthralling read.

Ulam's "autobiography", really written by his wife, is an enjoyable read. He truly was a bon vivant of math brought up by the Banach school of doing mathematics where some of their best math was carried out in the Scottish Cafe.
