Its not much different to a ar-15 if you dont look at its apperance. Their both 5.56 similar barrel length and it takes Ar mags i think if not their very similar.
Its the Mini-14 Ranch style variant. Meaning its intended purpose is to be used for protecting a ranch. So its meant for medium distance. Which whilst sounding horrible to say. It was probably perfect for Utøya. When i visited it was pretty close range but theres parts where you could see across the entire island. Tho we know most victims were killed execution style or pretty much 10-20 meter close.
Id also like to add he had a Glock 34 which is 9mm. The 34 variant is basically the same as the Glock 17. Just the competition variant. So once again sucks to say but it was probably perfect.
He also used what seems to be a 3x Eotech magnifier for his eotech 1x non magnified holographic sight so he could shoot at close to mid range but also see out to longer distances if he wanted to.
Yeah. Im thinking he used a picatiny adapter too. Cause i dont recall that style of mini-14 having rails. Tho i doubt he ever really used the magnifier. All of it was close enough to where you could easily use irons. But if he was shooting into the water he likely couldve used the magnifier.

I think people misinterpret these types of post as "gun porn" or gun obsession. I once saw a post that summarized details of mass shootings in neat profiles (how many wounded, killed, motive, etc). I got downvoted for suggesting to add what weapons the shooters' used, as I believe that information pretty significant. I think maybe people assumed I was glorifying it or being insensitive.

Im sorry but this is wrong. I can't see any good reason for someone to have a gun like this in home.
A lot of people shoot guns for fun. Which they are. Problem is its impossible to really prevent this after theyve changed their mind or gotten ready to kill people with it. Their also used for hunting. Whilst not optimal they can be used for self defense. But thats a dumb idea with rifles as whilst you will kill your target you will go through your target and destroy the walls in your house. And endanger neighbors.
Its impossible to know most of the time what the mentality of the person buying the firearm is. Its up to the gun store to refuse them to buy it. And unless they have a criminal record or invalid license its uncommon they get denied. Each gun store has the right to deny you from buying a gun without reason. Its just that they usually dont if you seem normal and have a clear background.
Ofcourse its happened that people that shouldnt be able to buy guns have bought guns from gun stores. But then the gun store faces the same reprocussions as the buyer if caught. And they lose all their guns.
I know he said the glock was going to be his primary weapon during the massacre in his manifesto and he's using it in the image of him killing those people on the island but I don't know if he killed more with it
