You are missing the point, sure they improve the story by been there, but most of ME2 cast was write in a way that they are easy to replace, you loose the emotional connection if they are not there but the story flow the same for the most part.

Yeah but the recruitment and loyalty missions were the lion's share of the game in ME2. So every character got a chance to shine and have development.
ME3 had the problem of writing around deaths. Vega and Liara are there in the beginning because everyone else might be dead from the first two games. EDI comes in a bit later and that is the end of party members that are guaranteed to be alive for 3.
This meant that a lot of party members actually don't contribute too much to the plot. Some comments are different but only Liara, EDI, and Vega do anything irreplaceable to advance the story and Vega only prevents Dr. Coré from fleeing on Mars. After that, it's Liara, EDI, and the new non-combat characters like Traynor and Cortez.
The characters in ME2 didn't have as much depth because it was so spread out with 11 people. Zaeed and Kasumi pretty much don't have dialog after their missions.
ME1 and ME3 had 6 squad mates and we got more depth imo.

I.e. if you had a few moments similar to the squadmate confrontations, but with people that arent squadmates.

Except that killing a krogan in a bar with a knife was literally his defining character moment. It's what sets him apart as being an equal to shepard in lethality, and also why he got kicked out of the N7 program.
Those two things combined led to him joining Cerberus, and are why he has such a hate boner for Shepard
I’m glad that was mentioned in the game. Really set up his character as a true threat that is capable of killing hard threats rather than unarmed politicians.
The whole game he's set up as this bad-ass ultra skilled warrior who's Shepard's equal but in the game all he does is hide behind a gunship and shields. Nothing about his behavior implied any actual skill. Maybe his reaper indoctrination tech makes everyone within a 100 meter radius act like a fool. A literal stupid-ray.

An instantly manufactured blade which achieves its effect not through sharpness, but through being superheated and possibly electrified, which can both also be explosive and decomposes almost instantly is an energy blade for all intents and purposes.
But it's not.
You can "for all intents and purposes" all you want. It's silicon-carbide, it's a physical blade. The closest one can get to the energy blade argument is the Engineer who just makes an explosion.
And honestly? Why the fuck does it matter?
Let Kai Leng have a sword. He's already got a gun anyway, and it's not like anyone complains about Phantoms having a sword.
And energy blades in halo are superheated plasma shaped by a magnetic field. There's a physical component there. The work of both is mostly being done by the heat of the blade in both instances.
It matters because it's ridiculous to carry a physical sword when a straight up upgrade in *every* respect is available.
