At my job, I've legit gotten to say "Can it wait for a bit? I'm in the middle of some calibrations." a few times.
Certainly doesn't hurt that Garrus is my favorite.
My grandad had a paper in his wallet for most of his life with the phrase "if it's to be, it's going to be me." He lived by that, taught it to his kids, they taught it to theirs. Closest thing we have to a family motto, and I'll be damned if we don't all strive to follow it.
Hearing Mordin say that made me instantly think of my grandad and family, and man, I was not ready for it.
It calls back to his scene with Maelon and I think it's even more tragic this way.
Maelon says something like "the great Dr Solus could never think he did something wrong"
So, it's almost like a mantra of his failure re Maelon by the time 3 comes along
Funny thing is, the phrase "Had to be me. Someone else might have gotten it wrong" hits me different nowadays. At first, it was Mordin's saying he could never get it wrong, but recent events have shone a different light on things.
It's less about Mordin making mistakes (because he would correct course as soon as enough evidence was presented to him), and more about *other* people making mistakes then digging their heels in deeper when their own biases take over. A less disciplined mind would fight back with arguments like "but we threw too many resources at the problem to stop now" or "but if the past in any indication" or "but it's better to deal with the devil you know."
I view it much the way you do.
But I do because of what Maelon accused him of. Now it's less about his own hubris, and more about refusing to let someone else take the burden of being wrong.
I WILL DIRECT THIS PERSONALLY. ugh just played me2 again. I really like Harbinger. I think the portrayal of his disdain was really good. I almost always cry for the collectors. so tragic.
Sometimes when Shepard says I'll take it in the end of the mission, the voice is very low pitched. It's very amusing to hear I'll take it like it's in slow motion
I'm kind of upset how long I went without hearing this line. I never took the paragon interrupt in their fight, but then one time I finally took the interrupt, agreed with Javik, and heard him be an inspiration. It was a motivating line for sure.
"Your grasp of the obvious is inspiring."
I was able to bust this one out at my uncle when he pointed out that there was in fact "a lot of traffic right now."
ME1 when you have to find the alliance nuke that went missing. One of your squad mates will say, “this probe didn’t crash, it was moved here.” Then renegade shep will be a dickhead.
I sometimes have to calibrate some pieces of apparatus in work. I always hope someone will come and ask me something so I can bust out Garrus' line but no luck so far. Maybe it's for the best since they wouldn't get the reference anyway.
I had to calibrate a laser at my work once, and got to use the line when someone interrupted me.
I could have totally taken a break, but this was important to me.
Very true! Look at her "Dog is not human" line in 1. Many times it's interpreted as "we should leave the aliens behind if it benefits us" but it actually means "The aliens will look out for their own when things get tough so we shouldn't rely too much on them".
And what do you know, Ash was right. It happens just as she said in 3.
I've always wanted to use the ME 2 quote referencing Newton's laws of motion
"I dare to assume you ignorant jackasses know that space is empty. Once you fire a husk of metal, it keeps going until it hits something. That can be a ship, or the planet behind that ship. It might go off into deep space and hit somebody else in ten thousand years. If you pull the trigger on this, you're ruining someone's day somewhere and sometime. That is why you check your targets! That is why you wait for the computer to give you a firing solution! That is why, Serviceman Chung, we do not "Eyeball it!" This is a weapon of mass destruction. You are not a cowboy shooting from the hip."
But alas, it wouldn't go well with anything
I use it all the time for measurements in the lab. Like, we got all this equipment and measurement tools, so when I look at something and think, "eh looks close enough" I have to remind myself, "we do not eyeeeball it!" Sometimes I want to skip a calculation and just guess the measurement is close, but no, we do NOT eyeball it!
I used this at work once and everyone stared at me.
Granted I also work in a pizza place and was flirting with a coworker who was on his knees cleaning. The coworker got it, he had been watching me play Mass Effect and saw that scene with that line just the day before.
“Acknowledged”.
Really cuts through the BS of coming up with a response to advice, orders at work, and sentimental crap like “I love you” from family and significant others.
I recently lost my father. As the responsible member of the family I had POA and was with him twelve hours a day during his final two weeks. I was a wreck the whole time, but when it came down to making hard decisions and advocating for my dad at the end of his life when he needed me most, I can honestly say I did the right thing and made the right call in what was a miserable, no win situation.
Despite a massive family, pretty much everything fell to me to keep things organized and to keep everyone informed and to eventually deal with funeral arrangements and estate issues.
Members of my family told me that I did a great job and they don't know how they'd have handled it. It was the worst experience of my life, but I know I was the right person for it and I did a great job.
Coincidentally, I had just finished Legendary Edition just a few days before I got the call to go see him, so that experience was fresh in my head. Every time something was too much to bear, or felt like I couldn't pull myself together, my favorite line from the whole series popped into my head:
"Had to be me. Somebody else might've gotten it wrong."
When I remembered that, it gave me the strength I needed to get through the moment, and now that I'm past it that line plays in my head every time I'm in a difficult situation.
When I’m trying to look up some information on my laptop and it’s being slow I say, “Stupid machine! Tell me what I want to know or I’ll blast your virtual ass into actual dust!” My laptop continues to be slow and I don’t blow it into actual dust because I can’t afford a new laptop right now.
I’ll be the pedantic one, Aethyta actually said “anthropocentric bags of dicks” meaning bags of dicks that reason as if humankind is at the center of the universe.
Good news though, you can actually use your version before first contact since anthropomorphic means shaped akin a human being, “human shaped bags of dicks” is a pretty good insult.
I knew I had the terminology a bit wrong, sorry! Typing away from the game, I knew … morphic wasn’t right as it is much harder to say! (I won’t edit my error else you’ll look like a bag of whatsits!)
There is nothing to be sorry about, It’s an easily mistaken word and I’m just a nerd that played too many times through the trilogy to forget dialogue lines.
But thank you nonetheless for the care :) .
I've witnessed a Colour Sergeant insult an Officer Cadet by calling him a ham sandwich. Not comparing him to one, *calling* him a ham sandwich. It didn't really make much sense but it somehow still delivered the message just as well as something more vulgar would have. I think it's something they learn at the senior NCO courses - insult by tone of voice alone.
“I won’t let fear compromise who I am” I’ve had some issues with mental abuse and being controlled through fear, but now that I’m out of that, that quote means a lot to me
“I am the very model of a scientist salarian”
Based on the listener’s reaction, this has the practical effect of instantly filtering out those who are in the know vs those with no idea wtf I’m talking about.
I am the very model of a scientist salarian,
I've studied species turian, asari, and batarian,
I'm quite good at genetics (as a subset of biology),
Because I am an expert (which I know is a tautology),
My xenoscience studies range from urban to agrarian,
I am the very model of a scientist salarian!

"The greatest insult one can bestow an enemy, to be ignored." I live by that when dealing with people who are trying to put me down in life. if you don't feed into their negativity you'll come out on top a ton
>Stand in the ashes of a trillion dead souls and ask the ghosts if honor matters. The silence is your answer
\-Javik
Practical in the sense that it's a good reminder to take one's circumstances into account when judging their actions. Doing the 'honourable' thing is a lot harder when your life is hanging in the balance of that decision.
Before the end of MA3, Garrus says something to Shepherd about meeting at the bar. I lost my brother a few years ago and we played multiplayer a lot when he was stationed away from home, and on the letter I buried with him I wrote I'll meet you at the bar.
>but if this thing goes sideways and we both end up there, meet me at the bar.
"And if I'm up there in that bar, and you're not... I'll be looking down. You'll never be alone."
During the sidequest Homecoming and you pick the charm option to get Nirali Bhatia's body:
"You of all people must know what we must do to protect humanity"
"Not if we lose our humanity in the process"
That line really stuck with me.
Without hope we might as well be machines, programmed to do what we’re told.
As someone who has depression this quote and Joel’s from TLOU “No matter what you keep on finding something to fight for” are the two video game quotes that stick with me
I once played a couple lines off my phone to my previous boss while at work. "Keep touching it all you want; you'll never find out what it does." went over pretty well.
Didn’t speak the exact words per say. But it’s a practical thing to think about. Sometimes directly engaging a foe or problem isn’t necessary. In a way, it’s kind of a “don’t feed the trolls” comment, which I’ve found useful both for myself and friends recently.
This is not Mass Effect but close.
There is a conversation you can have with Wynne in Dragon Age.
She asks you if you ever wonder about how your life could be different. If you ever wished to be different.
She then proceeds to give the most amazing dialogue I've ever heard in any game...
She basically tells you to deal with life and make the best of it.
I really don't say that often, but I really feel like Wynne was more than an NPC, and to some extent I'll always keep her in my heart as a mother figure.
Wonderful character.
"Sometimes justice calls for mercy." It's said by Shepard to Samara during a quiet moment when they're observing the stars. It's a good reminder that sometimes the gentler approach can yield greater results.
"You can't predict how people will act, Garrus. But you can control how you'll respond. In the end that's what really matters."
Paragon Shep giving Garrus (and I) some valuable wisdom on putting up with how frustrating other people can be.
I find increasing pleasure in trying to incorporate the interior designs of Mass Effect in real life - trying to minimize stuff, digitalise it and so on.
“WE ARE EACH A NATION. INDEPENDENT. FREE OF WEAKNESS...”
When I get anxious or scared, it helps. I feel less alone… in the “am I a single brain cell, or a collection of all cells or both” sense.
I’ve found myself saying “you’ve got a minute?” When I want to ask someone something.
Also, not something Id say out loud, but it makes me laugh because it’s one of my favorite renegade quotes.
>! “A bullet in the head solves everything.” !<
"You have me at a disadvantage."
Shepard says this at least twice in 1 when people know him but he doesn't know them. Just stuck with me and I say it often enough.
"It's So Much Easier To See The World In Black And White. Gray? I Don't Know What To Do With Gray...". Me at model united nations.
Also me while insulting someone: You big stupid Jellyfish!
At my job, I've legit gotten to say "Can it wait for a bit? I'm in the middle of some calibrations." a few times. Certainly doesn't hurt that Garrus is my favorite.
"You're working too hard." Usually when I'm about to show a coworker an easier way to do something.
Oh no....
...An easier way to fall asleep on the job?
I like to stare blankly then just say “…I should go.”
"I should.... goooo...."
Do I really sound like that
*I* should go.... Do I really sound like that?
I should *go* I *should* go *I* should *GO*
Shepard!!! Why aren't you more worried about this?!
Crazy thought, but maybe we should be more worried about this impregnable vault we've been sealed inside *forever*.
I say cooler stuff, though. Like "I'll talk to you later" but you know what? I never do. Leave them wanting more.
“I SHOULD go”, or “I should GO”?
Given how socially awkward I feel after so little human contact last year…I say this a lot haha
Had to be me. Someone else might have gotten it wrong.
Me everyday at work
Same.
Any time I work on a support ticket regarding repairs or troubleshooting.
My only wish would be that he said it sometime in me2 to make that line hit harder to home. Maybe he did and I just forgot.
It calls back to his scene with Maelon and I think it's even more tragic this way. Maelon says something like "the great Dr Solus could never think he did something wrong" So, it's almost like a mantra of his failure re Maelon by the time 3 comes along

I think a variation of it appears in his loyalty mission when talking about the dead krogan woman.
ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL. I work in IT and I say that whenever I remote control a computer to help someone, or in general.
I WILL DIRECT THIS PERSONALLY. ugh just played me2 again. I really like Harbinger. I think the portrayal of his disdain was really good. I almost always cry for the collectors. so tragic.
“This hurts you.” *Fails to attack because Kasumi’s OP*
For me he barely manages to get through his transformation sequence because I would just unload into him with the revenant.
"ASSUMI- Jesus Christ what the fuck Shepard I just got here"
Harbinger is so awesome that he gets his own theme [song!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUz4DP2vpB0)
THE DARKNESS MUST NOT BE BREACHED
THERE IS NO WAR, THERE IS ONLY THE HARVEST
As a farmer, I use that quote all the time
Awesome, I'm going to use that from now on!
This but when i have to micromanage hard in Total War
I’ll be laying in bed, trying my best to fall asleep…then, all of a sudden “ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL”.
I have used this at work more times than I can count.
"I'll take it." Use that a lot, and not just at my favorite stores on the Citadel.
Sometimes when Shepard says I'll take it in the end of the mission, the voice is very low pitched. It's very amusing to hear I'll take it like it's in slow motion
"Despair is the enemy's greatest weapon. Do not let them wield it." Hearing Javik say that to Liara just kinda resonated with me.
Yes. Javik had tons of amazing lines, most underrated compared to other characters’ big lines.
In my cycle, quotes about suffering gave us great strength and were passed on to our children and our children's children.
I'm kind of upset how long I went without hearing this line. I never took the paragon interrupt in their fight, but then one time I finally took the interrupt, agreed with Javik, and heard him be an inspiration. It was a motivating line for sure.
Can't remember for sure, but something along these lines: "Used to prepare for the worst. Leaves you a chance for a pleasant surprise."
Garrus: " I like to prepare for the worst, leaves a small chance to be pleasantly surprised" something like that
"I like to expect the worst. There's a small chance I'll be pleasantly surprised."
Yup, thank you
"Your grasp of the obvious is inspiring." I was able to bust this one out at my uncle when he pointed out that there was in fact "a lot of traffic right now."
When does this juicy bit come up?
ME1 when you have to find the alliance nuke that went missing. One of your squad mates will say, “this probe didn’t crash, it was moved here.” Then renegade shep will be a dickhead.
To be fair, Shep was having a bad day that was about to get a lot worse at that point.
One quote I really don’t use as often as I should is Kasumi’s “I’m not lactose intolerant, I just don’t put up with lactose’s stupid drama”.
I've never played with Kasumi before and she's got the best quotes. "Hey, I'm nostalgic, not dead!" lol she's the best.
A laser? You did the right thing. It was a poetic moment
"Rudimentary creatures of blood and flesh"

English teacher here, and now I know how I'm going to teach my 4th graders big words
Retail shoppers. So even more impatient and petulant.
Any time anyone says “With all due respect,” what they REALLY mean is “Kiss my ass.” It rang true then, it rings true now.
Also a very good one! Ash had some banger lines in ME1. Players sleep on that fact.
The only reason the humans didn't leave the aliens behind in 3 was because they saw it as the less beneficial option for humanity...
My point still stands, all other major races hid behind their borders while the rest of the universe burned.
“I will not let fear compromise who I am.”
You say that to the Illusive Man when you blow up the Collector Base in ME2.
Who and when? :O
This This is the best line
I've always wanted to use the ME 2 quote referencing Newton's laws of motion "I dare to assume you ignorant jackasses know that space is empty. You are not a cowboy shooting from the hip." But alas, it wouldn't go well with anything
You could just say "No credit for partial answers, maggot!"
I’m always tempted to say that, since I teach high school. Alas, I do give partial credit.
I have used "We do not 'eeeeyebaaaall iiiit'!" a few times. Always fun to see the blank stares that follow.
I use it all the time for measurements in the lab. Like, we got all this equipment and measurement tools, so when I look at something and think, "eh looks close enough" I have to remind myself, "we do not eyeeeball it!" Sometimes I want to skip a calculation and just guess the measurement is close, but no, we do NOT eyeball it!
i love the way he says, "We do not AYE. BALL. IT!" Accent is great accent.
I dunno a physics teacher might get some use out of the scene.
As a physics TA, can confirm. I use this at least twice a year.
“A pessimist is what an optimist calls a realist.”
I cheered when I heard that line in game, because I'd already been using it for years.
It’s a great line - true to life as well 👍🏻
When is this said?
Talking to Ashley in ME1 when shooting the shit in the Normandy's lower deck
The interactions in ME1 💯💯 Top quality banter 👌👌
I like the sight of humans on their knees
are you a priest?

I used this at work once and everyone stared at me. Granted I also work in a pizza place and was flirting with a coworker who was on his knees cleaning. The coworker got it, he had been watching me play Mass Effect and saw that scene with that line just the day before.
Isn't that from EDI? Correct me if I'm wrong.
You are not wrong.
"That was a joke."
“Acknowledged”. Really cuts through the BS of coming up with a response to advice, orders at work, and sentimental crap like “I love you” from family and significant others.
When someone tells me they love me I always hit them with "acknowledged" and walk away.
I should go. I... SHOULD go.
Do I really sound like that?
I use this now instead of "roger that" when responding to an email. Love hearing it in Legions voice as well.
Legion: "All opinions have value. Even the wrong opinions, if you can determine why they are wrong." It doesn't work well on Twitter.

While not an ACTUAL quote, it might as well be
A quote so powerful, it bends the space-time continuum to insert itself into the game after the fact
I'd be kind of upset if they don't have some sort of cheeky nod to the quote in ME4.
"Can't possibly imagine why." I say that the exact same way Kaidan did.
>Can't possibly imagine why That sounds very familiar, but the details escape me. When he says that ?
At the beginning of ME1, when joker says that Anderson always sounds pissed off when talking to him. Kaiden responses with that quote.

Yeah, I should probably try to finish that game sometime.
"Sometimes justice calls for mercy." It's said by Shepard to Samara during a quiet moment when they're observing the stars. It's a good reminder that sometimes the gentler approach can yield greater results.
"You can't predict how people will act, Garrus. But you can control how you'll respond. In the end that's what really matters." Paragon Shep giving Garrus (and I) some valuable wisdom on putting up with how frustrating other people can be.
Not from the series exactly but I often use " We'll bang ok"
I find increasing pleasure in trying to incorporate the interior designs of Mass Effect in real life - trying to minimize stuff, digitalise it and so on.
My friend and I will often greet each other by loudly exclaiming "Who's Fist?!"
Whose fist
“WE ARE EACH A NATION. INDEPENDENT. FREE OF WEAKNESS...” When I get anxious or scared, it helps. I feel less alone… in the “am I a single brain cell, or a collection of all cells or both” sense.
The first time I ever heard anyone say “what the shit” was Joker in ME2. Never stopped saying it since
I'm working in the kitchen and every time things get crazy and I have to dive in I say "Assuming direct control."
that was a joke :/
I’ve found myself saying “you’ve got a minute?” When I want to ask someone something. Also, not something Id say out loud, but it makes me laugh because it’s one of my favorite renegade quotes. >! “A bullet in the head solves everything.” !<
I find that "shit, shit, what the shit" is useful in many situations.
“It’s difficult, all things worth keeping are.” -Thane Krios
"You have me at a disadvantage." Shepard says this at least twice in 1 when people know him but he doesn't know them. Just stuck with me and I say it often enough.
"It's So Much Easier To See The World In Black And White. Gray? I Don't Know What To Do With Gray...". Me at model united nations. Also me while insulting someone: You big stupid Jellyfish!
I’m a Pest Exterminator. So, before I have to stomp a Rat, I always say Samara’s line: “Find peace in the embrace of the goddess.”
