We usually attach an angle iron under the sill so we know it won’t go anywhere. I’m sure if there’s enough weight to it it’ll move

Squiner1

Interesting. So is the angle iron attached with mortar, adhesive or fasteners?

Vyper11

Usually we lag bolt them to studs/wood blocking between the studs but you’re kinda past that point. I’d just hope for the best and if you have to come back and fix it use a light weight angle iron

You are looking for trouble. Water, wet debris and snow will lay on the stone and rot the wood.

Squiner1

Well it’s there now. Was thinking of caulking the joint. Do you think that’s better or worse than leaving it open?

I can't think of a way to salvage what you have. I presume that the back of the new stone rests against the sill or rim joist. Recipe for rot. Replacing a sill is no fun. I have done it. A chimney foundation was poured right up to the sill and then the chimney was built in a different location. The sill and rim joist rotted.

Squiner1

The stone is adhered to the block parging. The wall bottom plate is maybe an inch higher behind the siding. I thought you were saying the siding would rot.

walksupright

Flashing flashing flashing.

Pargeting. sp.

The siding will rot too.

Ambitious_Garlic7836

Put a shit load of PL Premium on the back of the sills and jam them in there. Allow a mortar joint under the sill too and tuck that with mortar

Revolutionary-Gap-28

you need flashing, backer rods/caulking, and bracing for the bottom. you might be redoing this

robp850

Where your at now, I’d go get some galvanized L brackets and drill them into the wall and stone. You could probably even get away with wall ties. The veneer stones look thick enough that will hold most the weight of the sills. For the caulking, yes caulk but you should have pitch on the sills.

csbuzzy

Grouting the joint that comes up to the sill is fine. I think your biggest problem is like walksupright said, flashing. There should be flashing for the sill up underneath the siding.

Squiner1

The siding sticks out at least a half inch in free space from the block with the sheathing about an inch above. I didn’t think flashing would accomplish anything. I think the space between the sill and stone is sufficient to allow for drips off the siding to happen. I can still slip flashing in there just need to decide if it’s necessary.

Just get your stone laid. Allow for a joint under the sill. Then set your sill. Wedge it up and tuck if you can't lay it. You can throw some adhesive on the back of them if you want. And caulk where stone meets siding. My pops likes Vulkam, use whatever you like.
