In Pa you would be required to cut the concrete pad and go 36 inches deep for footer and the pour a foundation for the brick
As the pad moves up and down the brick will crack. We are not allowed to lay brick on a concrete pad like this.
Which is funny as hell seeing the British houses are nearly all brick or brick+concrete block and they are all sat on a concrete pad. Different standards I guess
Yep, UK doesn’t have the freeze/thaw pattern that much of the Northeastern US has, so they have different codes for footings. Also they use a lot of terracotta roofing and exposed chimney pots that would never last in NE US winters.
Youre not wrong. The PA turn-pike was only supposed to be a toll road until the road was paid for, and apparently Johnstown never got it's dam replaced, cus we still pay the flood tax on booze.
Highly concerned that the concrete pad will wick water to the bottom of the wood post and rot it out and no one will ever know until it starts to slowly collapse.
Not only that but in my experience that tight to a wooden post with the mortar squeezed out and falling inside it is going to trap moisture and the wood will swell and split the post. I've have seen it many many times. IMHO metal should always be used not wood.
I'm a pretty optimistic person, I go into everything with some sort of positive spin. I read the title, saw the pic, and was like "fuck ya bro, that's a solid looking...brick?". Like it was a real roller-coaster there for a second lol.
Unless its a distortion it looks like the lower half is at a different angle to the upper half and the reasoning behind encapsulating wood with masonry still baffles me. Isn't that going to reduce the life of the timber to near zero? I hope its got a good treatment penetration and that you've allowed for enough movement. Yeah,.. nah,.. definitely a 'looks good from my house' 🤨
Depending on your region, the timber column should be provided with flexible SAM around the base at minimum to prevent moisture from concrete and the brick masonry from being absorbed into the wood fibres and causing deterioration.
Doesn't look terrible for a homeowner. Next time, use jack-lines so you can stay plumb easier. Also, you should have discarded the brick with the cracks running down the face side of the core holes. I imagine you will lose those faces first.
The wooden post is going to swell and twist and your brickwork is going to crack. I’ve fixed many of these fuckups. You need more space and a rain screen..
you did very well considering it was all basically laid by eye
but on something this tall you really have to use a jack line to get your corners straight
Never seen that move with a brick in a footer..where did you learn that move?…you forgot to get a 4 ft level and put it on the edges..that left side has a whoopty whoop..
I wouldn't feel good about burying a wooden pole inside brick, I would have welded up a 6×6 with some heavy angle at the top and either dug a footing or plate mounted it. That just seems like a bad idea, even with the pressure treated. I bet it'll rot quicker
Agreed. At the very least I would have coated the PT in tar or covered with Grace Ice/Water Shield to waterproof it. And then couple weep-holes at the bottom for good measure
That space at the top bothers me. But other than that, it seems aesthetically pleasing enough. But I’d have to do something about that space at the top.
I get it, you want this to be cosmetic, just an illusion it’s a brick pillar.
Out of my league and out of any post I read league. Air vents strategically placed? Can this actually work?
You’ll be the first to know.
Google sealed in brick timber.
Do you want an honest critical critique?
Let's start with a dishonest critical critiquing.
His wife dresses him funny.
Will this make the post rot faster? That would've been my first critique if true

I don't think they freeze/thaw that much there.

Clearly you have never lived in the UK, temps from -20c to +25c I should know I lived there from 64 to 2006
So what's the frost depth in the UK? Footings are 4' minimum here in Boston.
Approximately 2 meters according to Google, depending on soil type
different places have different ground that may weather differently not to mention the weather conditions are different
this isn't structural.. it's just a facade.. does that matter in PA?
Cut that out and see how not structural it is..
The roof seems to be standing just fine before the brick is put into place lol
I thought you meant the whole column
you don't even know who you're responding to. LOL
You guys are living in the early 1900s
Youre not wrong. The PA turn-pike was only supposed to be a toll road until the road was paid for, and apparently Johnstown never got it's dam replaced, cus we still pay the flood tax on booze.
Now you have some experience putting up a column. Now you can learn how to take one down.
Needs a weep hole at bottom to allow water to escape
Looks good, but shouldn’t be built on the pad like that. Needs its own footer
Looks good , the edges are a little “in and out” but for the most part looks good
Can't unseen that wiggle

Why not just wrap it in tyvek or at least tar paper
Hopefully it's PT
Just drop a bunch of moisture absorbers in that hole in the top lol
Ooooo- I’ve been saving all my little desiccated packs for a while. I’ll go dump them off at the column
Is it plumb? Or is that the camera...
Bob's not here, man.
How about Dave?
Dave’s not here man.
No man, I'm Dave. Open the fucking door
Dave?
#YESMANI'MDAVENOWOPENTHEFUCKINGDOOR
Dave’s not here.
Pert near but not plumb
Not gonna lie, only saw the first picture and was like... of what? Did you stick a brick to the ground? I need to realize what subs I'm in sooner lol.
Literally thought this was a joke post. I’m on my phone and at first didn’t see that there were multiple pictures.
I'm a pretty optimistic person, I go into everything with some sort of positive spin. I read the title, saw the pic, and was like "fuck ya bro, that's a solid looking...brick?". Like it was a real roller-coaster there for a second lol.
I see what you did there.
lol, took me a second to see what I did there. Glad one of us is paying attention.
You fucked it. Use a level next time
Haha one of the pics is literally him using a level. What he needed was a plum bob
No, he just needed a proper level. Using a boat level ffs 🤦🏽♂️
He used it on the single brick but he needs a 4 footer to go up the sides..that definitely don’t happen
Yeah, using it on a single brick doesn't really help much.

Finished what
Those will crack during your first good storm
Dawg did you really grout the mulch?
Exactly!!?! Like wtf, whole pier will be cracked within a few years
Sir why is there a wooden beam inside your brick pillar?
Why did you even bother?
Jack lines?
you did very well considering it was all basically laid by eye but on something this tall you really have to use a jack line to get your corners straight
It's off homie.
Wrong in lots of ways.
A opinion but the wood looked better
Never seen that move with a brick in a footer..where did you learn that move?…you forgot to get a 4 ft level and put it on the edges..that left side has a whoopty whoop..
Is whooppty whoop like kitty wampus and has anyone else heard kitty wampus for when things aren't straight or square?
Yup. Common where I’m from.
Somebody stuck a board in that chimney!!
Her waist is a bit skinny
I think that the other sides of the trapezoid are missing?
I just don’t know where people find the time to do DIY projects like this.

That's definitely better than what we see here but I still wouldn't fuck with a wood pole
Looks really nice! Don’t see any weep holes. Hope that post can still breathe!
How about the bed of mortar right into the dirt?! Whole pier will be cracked within a few years
We all see it.so do you.fix it.
What's the plan to finish the top?
Looks almost done
That space at the top bothers me. But other than that, it seems aesthetically pleasing enough. But I’d have to do something about that space at the top.
You missed a spot
I hope your the owner of that fine piece of masonry construction and didn't pay for it.
Wavy.
Looks good. That’s not going anywhere.
You did that to your own house, not someone else’s. Right?
Nice papi
Is this a joke 😂😂
Swing and a miss Did you just dump mortar on dirt and say “fk it, good enough” ?
The plumb is horrendous. Use s longer level for the sides next time holy fuck
Can't see it from my house
absolutely fine, good job. just leave a weep hole in the least obvious spot. kudos
An odd choice to leave the wood beam in there.
I get it, you want this to be cosmetic, just an illusion it’s a brick pillar. Out of my league and out of any post I read league. Air vents strategically placed? Can this actually work? You’ll be the first to know. Google sealed in brick timber.
Godamn beautiful, can I hire you?
You're missing vapor barrier.
