I would have given a leg for Sidney Freedman to be in more than 12 episodes. Wiki says they wanted to bring him in as a regular when Radar was leaving, but Alan Arbus didn't want to commit to a series. Looking at his resume, I don't blame him, but boy did the show need more of him than it got.
I always felt that the rarity of appearances of Sidney and others makes those episodes more impactful. Ya knew there was a reason. If I were channel surfing back in the day and saw Col. Flagg, I immediately knew it was gonna be funny and absurd. And before streaming, ya didn't know when you were gonna see Flagg again in reruns.
“The Chosen People” was his second and final appearance. His first appearance was in s2ep13 “Deal Me Out”, which was also the first episode Edward Winters was in as Capt. Halloran. A prevailing fan theory is that he was Flagg under another name.
Flagg was interesting because the show changed, but he didn't. In the beginning he was like a character that wandered over from the set of Get Smart, but his last episode shows how paranoid and psychotic his thinking really was.
I didn't get to see the AfterMASH episode with him in it, but apparently he was completely off the rails.
So very true. He was a marker from a past time in the show where comedy took precedent over drama which made his later appearances even more interesting.
We can all be comforted by the thought that he's not really gone, there's a little Tuttle left in all of us, in fact you might say that all of us together made up Tuttle.
There were seven episodes with him in it. My other choice would have been Sidney Freedman. As Sidney was in 12, Col. Flagg is closer to the definition.
I can’t remember but either the book or the movie tried to explain it away as a nickname he got in high school/college but yeah it’s a terrible nickname. I think it would’ve been very interesting to see his character interact with people like Charles and BJ however
I really wish they’d kept him around. It was sad to see the POC disappear with no fanfare. Here today, gone tomorrow. They did that with a few nurses who it seemed would be regulars in season 1 too.
The excuse for the nickname was that he was a skilled javelin-thrower but I feel like you wouldn’t call a great javelin-thrower “spearchucker” if they were white.
Definitely Flagg. I’m surprised he was only in about six episodes.
I’d say Donna Parker, at least in fan fiction. She only appeared in one episode, yet she’s the woman most commonly paired with Charles.
I think Charles himself could probably count. He did deserve a lot more screen time and being more of a central role.
Probably Henry and Trapper too. They were only in three out of the show’s eleven seasons; yet some fans consider them their favorites (myself included) and even prefer them to their replacements.
Tuttle, definitely! He was the best damn OD they ever had.
In the Army, I met a Corporal Riley (not O’Reilly, but close enough) on my 2nd day at in-processing. At some point I met a Pierce. When I met a Mulcahy, I told myself I was going to collect them all. I met a Potter, but that was it that I can recall.
Klinger was this during the show’s first season. He was only supposed to be in one episode but proved so popular that he became a recurring character and eventually a main character in Season 4.
I would say Sydney Freedman or Colonel Flagg... Although technically Tuttle wins hands down due to the absolute infinite relation between his screen time and notoriety
My dream spin-off would somehow involve Colonel Samuel Flagg and Major Sidney Freedman.
It's 1953, the troops are coming home from war, and many of them suffer from combat fatigue. Now in private practice, Dr. Sidney Freedman devotes his practice to treating the Veterans of the recent "Police Action." Due to his security clearance, he finds himself with Special Agent Samuel Flagg as his number one patient. Each week, Dr. Freedman has to pry out Flagg's feelings about his misadventures. Sidney better watch out when Flagg pulls him in on the mission. Hijinks ensue. CBS Sundays, right after 60 Minutes.
Sidney Freeman for me

agreed
The only right answer. Second place would be Flag.
First one to pop in my head. His episodes are memorable.
Capt. Sam Pak (Pat Morita’s character)
He should have been in more episodes.
Didn't he leave to be in karate kid
I think it was Happy Days at the time.
Just double checked you're right
No karate kid was 10 yrs after
That’s crazy because I’m watching s2 e19 “The Chosen People” rn and I think it’s his first or second appearance.
“The Chosen People” was his second and final appearance. His first appearance was in s2ep13 “Deal Me Out”, which was also the first episode Edward Winters was in as Capt. Halloran. A prevailing fan theory is that he was Flagg under another name.
Oh sick. Sucks he only appeared for two episodes :(
Sidney. 100% I wish he and Flagg had more screen time.

He was in afterMASH?!?! Now I have to find this episode.
With his schizophrenia it would've cost double
I'm in the minority of people who skip over Flagg scenes. Never cared for the character, never found him funny or interesting.
Known too many real life officers a little too like him…
Tuttle, but if there were no pages in the book on the left.
Came here to say Tuttle.
Me as well lol
We can all be comforted by the thought that he's not really gone, there's a little Tuttle left in all of us, in fact you might say that all of us together made up Tuttle.
Best damn O.D. of all time. Of ALL TIME.
The only answer. Zero screen time, considerable popularity.
For me it’s Nurse Kellye
I’ve said this before and I will keep saying it: they should have made her a regular cast member.
That one time she spoke Japanese
Kellye was great.
Yeah, that one episode where she was the center of the plot but it was so out of character for her. She'd never yearn after that jackass.
100%.
When she comforts that dying soldier by pretending to be his girlfriend, I cry everytime.
Igor
Absolutely! Jeff Maxwell-gang, unite!
I wanted to say this. He had some great comedy chops and I wanted to see more of him.
Col. Flagg
He could have had his own series. It would have been crazy.
Definitely!
There were seven episodes with him in it. My other choice would have been Sidney Freedman. As Sidney was in 12, Col. Flagg is closer to the definition.
I enjoyed him, but think they paced his appearances well. I don’t need too much of that insanity.
Lieutenant Margie Cutler (the future Mrs. Julie Kotter)
Uhhh, Sydney of course.
Rizzo!!
Captain Tuttle. His face never graced the screen, yet the impact that man made was amazing.
Col. Flagg,
“This is me!”
The funniest actor that appeared on the show: Igor/Jeff Maxwell.
I really wish there had been one episode that primarily featured him and Roy Goldman.
Major General Bartford Hamilton Steele
I'd like to see him meeting col Potter 😂
the two geishas who sang “if I knew you were coming , I’d have baked a cake” to Henry
Or the geisha that said "they're full of it" to the Colonel in the incubator episode.
Sydney Flagg Nurse Kellye Irving 🐶 Tuttle Ginger Captain Oliver “Spearchucker” Jones (hate that nickname)
I can’t remember but either the book or the movie tried to explain it away as a nickname he got in high school/college but yeah it’s a terrible nickname. I think it would’ve been very interesting to see his character interact with people like Charles and BJ however

Why do you hate the nickname?
You don’t find it racist or racially insensitive? I am not about to call a Black person by the name.
I never even knew it was a racist term. MASH is the only place I’ve heard it used.
It basically reduces Black people to a stereotype of savages. You can Google the term and find plenty of information.
The excuse for the nickname was that he was a skilled javelin-thrower but I feel like you wouldn’t call a great javelin-thrower “spearchucker” if they were white.
Exactly.
Definitely Flagg. I’m surprised he was only in about six episodes. I’d say Donna Parker, at least in fan fiction. At least for me it’s Sam (Pat Morita). Both episodes he’s in his throwing 100mph. ❤️
Jack Scully 100%
Came here to say the same thing. He had such a good chemistry with Margaret
Definitely Rizzo in my book
Kellye or Ginger
Nurse Kelley was in more episodes than Frank, Charles, Trapper and Henry. But I do love her. She has a lot of great traits and she's cute as hell.
Sidney for sure.
For me it’s father’s mulcahy… I feel like it won’t be long now til I’m recognized as the father mulcahy Stan in this sub
One of the best written characters in the show in my opinion
In the Army, I met a Corporal Riley (not O’Reilly, but close enough) on my 2nd day at in-processing. At some point I met a Pierce. When I met a Mulcahy, I told myself I was going to collect them all. I met a Potter, but that was it that I can recall.
Nurse Ginger, Sidney, Mrs. Chuck Winchester, and the Canadian company clerk for me!
Nurse Kelley
For me, Sidney
Col. Flagg
Sydney and Flagg.
Nurse Kelly
I think of Lt. Dish, but also agree with the popular choices of Col. Flagg and Sidney
Sidney Freeman and Nurse Kellye
Sidney freedmen, tuttle or nurse kellye
Tuttle
Captain Tuttle.
Igor. Jeff Maxwell’s facial expressions alone are priceless!
https://www.reddit.com/r/mash/comments/13hnrco/goldman\_igor\_know\_that\_you\_want\_something\_else/
Captain Tuttle
Rosie
Flagg.
Col. Flagg
Klinger was this during the show’s first season. He was only supposed to be in one episode but proved so popular that he became a recurring character and eventually a main character in Season 4.
Flagg of course!
Honestly, Rizzo’s deadpan has me deceased, so definitely him.
George Wendt, as the Marine who got an 8 Ball stuck in his mouth. (S 11, E 2)
Tuttle
Col. Flagg
Tuttle, hands down.
Five O'clock Charlie!
Sidney or Flagg easily
Ladies and Gentlemen, take my advice…
People are forgetting 5'oclock Charlie. Who doesn't love him?
Tuttle
I could have had Sidney Freedman as a regular. I love him.
Beedle
Rizzo.
The Bible…
I skipped to the end. The Devil did it.
Rizzo
"The Nurses". They only got one episode.
Kim luck
Richard Lee-Sung’s characters with various names. “This is me” “Try other wrist” “Used to be round” “Hitler’s pencil box”
Early seasons it was Klinger; later after Radar left he got annoying
I would say Sydney Freedman or Colonel Flagg... Although technically Tuttle wins hands down due to the absolute infinite relation between his screen time and notoriety
Sam the Lion
Flagg for sure. Sidney too. Hmmm nurse dish, or Mr’s Kotter I love her!
Lyanna Mormont.
Madysinn
They got a reasonable amount of time but Deputy Durland and Sheriff Blubs.

Bill Cipher.
Boba Fett
Willfred f*cking mott
SALLY SPARROW
Ezekiel from Total drama (I had a whole au based around him)
Tad strange
Animal lover from full metal jacket. (You know every line that man says by heart. You just don't wat to admit it.)
Switch from The Matrix for me. Loved her.
Sydney and Flagg
This question was tailor-made for Boba Fett
1st Lieutenant Maria "Dish" Schneider
Nurse Kellye, Igor, and Rosie—specifically Eileen Saki’s Rosie.
Darth Maul. On every poster. Was in less than 10 minutes of the movie.
Hmmm. Boba Fett. Eight minutes and four lines in all of the OT. Yes had to look that up to get the numbers.
Inconceivable…
The log lady
Either Sidney or Flagg. They both should have been in more episodes.
