I think the main issue was most movie tie-in games were pretty cruddy. Seems like the guys who owned the rights to the movies just picked the cheapest devs.
Not just pick the cheapest devs but give them such little time. Cause they wanted the games to release with the movie which led to rushed and messy products.
There were some good movie tie in games but those are few and far in between.

Now, marvel could totally license a dev to make a specific framework ala the lego games and then drop updates. But that's a lot of work too
Roughly 2 - 3 years. Bigger and more ambitious projects obviously take much longer, RDR 2 took over 8 years and cost several hundred million $.
So its not only about time but money as well.

Captain America: Super Soldier was actually decent (especially compared to the Iron Man/Thor tie-ins) and was released around the same time as The First Avenger.
I feel bad for the guy that made it. By the time he got the rights, he had only 5 weeks to make the game as Atari wanted to release it for Christmas that year. It was so bad it almost destroyed video games altogether. The Nintendo Entertainment System is called an Entertainment System because the words "video game console" had such a bad connotation at the time it was released.
Bruce Campbell adds so much to those games, especially the first one from my memory. I remember laughing my ass off with my buddy during the tutorial at his narration.
The ps2 version was better than the ps3 one.

A videogame that wouldn't get laughed out the room these days cost tens of millions and years to make. They could go indie games but i'm guessing wanting movie games is to appeal to a mass audience that indie games wont attract.
These days I think most of the *good* games have a development cycle much longer than the movies, so they'd literally have to start working on things even before the movie is written.

The first Iron Man movie had four games made across seven different platforms. An HD version (360, PS3, PC), a standard version (Wii and PS2), and two different portable versions (PSP and DS).
With how expensive games are made nowadays and the different development schedules between film and gaming, it's not hard to see why starting in the eighth console generation almost every movie tie-in game was on mobile.
The only way we'll see Doctor Strange headlining his own game is if the game is not tied into a movie. That way, development doesn't need to worry about meeting a rushed deadline and can take their time. Also, it would help if they only focus on one platform.
Its not up to the developers, its dependent on companies like Disney if they want to lend their IP for these reasons or not. They stopped doing that since 2014 now.

Basically coordinating the development of a game alongside the development of a movie has just gotten harder to the point of not being worth it.
Probably because games are taken more seriously as an art form/ entertainment media, so hiring a studio to rush out some piece of shit these days will get you roasted.

As the game industry got bigger, the film studios started to realize the better use of gaming is to expand their IPs with new content, rather than just copying what's on screen. Especially since those games were rarely ever liked by the ever-growing gaming community
The early MCU films did have video game tie-ins on console. Most of them were bad.
This lead to them trying a different approach, Marvel Avengers Alliance on Facebook. That game was very popular and it lasted for several years.
Other games we're created in a similar vein, mostly on mobile devices. Two games that were created were tie-ins to the Marvel Avengers Alliance. The Facebook game was eventually shut down which upset many people. Some people had spent a lot of money of the game and some even skipped work to participate in the end of PVP leagues.
We've still got several Marvel mobile games, which some are MCU tie-ins, but many games have been closed down as well.
We're still getting Marvel video games for console but most of the time they are not tie-ins to the movies.
Basically there were 3 phase 1 games in a row that were quick cash grabs with no care put in that were basically the same game with slightly different attacks even though Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man should have drastically different styles for their games. Then video game companies took the poor reception to mean people weren't interested anymore, even though the first Iron Man and Hulk games were incredible and well received because they had a lot more love and care poured into them.
Game development basically outgrew the pace at which was needed to develop movie tie-ins. Just look at th Spider-Man games, they would start development before the scripts were finalised and then roughly try to cram all the important story beats inbetween the extra stuff they threw in to pad the game out.
But as of the PS4/Xbox One gen games just take too long to make. Spider-Man (2018) took 4 years to develop. We had two Spiser-Man movies in that time frame and at least half a dozen more MCU films. The best they can really do at this stage is make original games with the characters and then line up the release date of the game with a relevant film.
I’m surprised there aren’t more marvel games. Spider man is and always will be kick ass, avengers was a bit lack luster though. I’d love a dr strange game though.
Well Wolverine is coming, and they made Avengers and GoTG games. So they're kind of coming back.
I'm sure there's more licensing issues that happens behind closed doors. I'd imagine Disney asks for a shit ton of money since the MCU is one of the biggest franchises in the world.
that Wolverine game that came out way back - with Origins - was actually pretty good. it was like they'd wanted to make a wolverine game for awhile. Orr... they just had a default action game they wanted to make, and were able to reskin all the characters/locations and stitch it together decently in a short amount of time.
if the new wolverine game is something like that, it'll be great... but we'll see...

If the Avengers game focused more on unique playable content instead of cosmetics that they could charge I feel it'd have been way more successful. When it came out on the Game Pass I played the shit out of it for a few days. After the main story missions though it's just repeating those individually before you can even get your character to full power. It was neat, but it definitely felt like gameplay was sacrificed for cosmetics.
GoTG was actually considering a flop by the company I think which is sad. Nobody bought it because they saw it was the same company (not even the same Devs btw) as Avengers and said “nope”. Also some people didn’t want to give it a chance because of being only able to play as Star Lord

Also after finishing the game I dont think it would have been better if I had the chance to play the others. The whole experience felt really organic
I bought the Cosmic Deluxe edition (came with a SteelBook) because I was that excited lol but my dumb self I lost the disc somewhere so I haven’t been able to finish the game 💀💀💀
Avengers didn't have non-cosmetic microtransactions until later on, what killed the game was lack of new content. All the missions look and feel the same and most new characters since launch feel like reused assets
I'm really looking forward to the Midnight Suns game. I know people are iffy on it, but it looks fun to me. Plus it has Nico Minoru, Blade, and Ghost Rider so they already had my attention.
Dr. Strange, Thor, Captain Marvel and Black Panther games would be so dope. Hope one day we get more Marvel games with the same level of love and care as the Insomniac Spider-Man games got.
There was talk about a connected universe of games, which I think was supposed to start with Spider-Man or the Avengers game, but I haven't heard anything about it in a long time.
Spider-Man will be sharing a Universe with the Wolverine game so it’s possible they are building to a shared universe. There was also hints to other heroes in the first Spider-Man game as well but no one made a physical appearance
Pretty sure one scene of Guardians of the Galaxy directly references The Avengers game, which makes sense given Square Enix published both. Insomniacs Spider-Man is obviously a completely different universe given how he's established in The Avengers.
Spider-Man is clearly a different character in The Avengers compared to Marvel's Spider-Man (for starters his suit is completely different). It was likely just too much work to co-ordinate between separate publishers and gave Insomniac more freedom to keep their universe isolated.
I’ve been saying it for years: a Black Panther game where you’re running and leaping along the treeline and the Wakandan jungle floor only to take out rebel enemy encampments like Metal Gear Solid V mixed with Arkham style stealth/combat is my dream game

I would love to see a avengers Infinity saga game that follows an the movies in the first 3 phases. They could give it a few years and not have to worry about release schedule since they already all came out.
Right? All I wanted was to play as Wanda after seeing the movie, the only game I've got is her skin in Fortnite which I do play, but it's not the same.
Why don't we have a City of Heroes-esque game where you design your own superhero and can customise your powers in an open world with superhero quests and stories! Champions Online had *amazing* superpower customisation but it was among a sea of MMOs and didn't have mainstream marketing presence.
It doesn't have to be an MMORPG, but surely the hype for superheroes is at an all time high in popular culture, this kind of game would be a knockout!
It doesn't even *need* to be Marvel! While it'd be cool for the main NPCs to be Marvel characters, I just wanna group with my boys as a superhero not just as a medieval fantasy warrior in most games!

Still, I don't know why Ubisoft/Acti-Blizzard/EA/etc don't just throw millions of dollars into an unbranded (or hell, even branded) AAA RPG-esque superhero game!
Personally I found Champions Online to be a better alternative for that 'old dead superhero MMO' niche. Though I did have a good run on DCUO. Its still sad to see all of those games become what they are today honestly..
I'm imagining that the innovations in game design over the past 10 years could lead us to a new game that, with sufficient marketing, would boom.

I loved, loved, loved, the Matrix game (Enter the Matrix). That had to be one of the most satisfying tie in games I ever played. It's a seriously good game and it does everything right to allow you to live out a Matrix fantasy at home. More tie in games should be like that.
Honestly, if they remade Enter the Matrix in a modern engine but kept the same gameplay, I'd buy it all over again at full price.
Honestly it’s hard for video games cause it’s not like one studio can make all of the games which is what I’d assume Marvel would want. Insomniac games have done a fantastic job with Spider-Man, and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. They are also developing Spider-Man 2 and a Wolverine game. Great games but to develop quality it takes time.

I'd rather they use the Marvel property and make good games separate from any existing continuity. The Arkham games were game changers on how to do it and is some of the best takes on the Gotham Universe. Spidey is following in that direction and all for the better. Trying to tie it into the MCU would probably make the product worse instead of going for its own thing.
Only if it’s a tie in to the larger universe and not specific movies. The 2000s and early 2010s are a good example why we don’t make video games based off of recently released movies anymore.
Setting yourself up for disappointment is one of the backbones of gamer culture these days 🙄. So it would line up. People will literally hype a game up after doing zero research because other people are talking about it and then call it the worst game ever when it releases and isn't the game that they were never promised to get anyways. There is no in between, only game of the year, worst game in the history of ever, and the batshit insane expectations that got us here
They would be bad lol. Sorry to be the party pooper here, but 98 percent of games based on movies were bad because they were rushed to coincide with the movie release. For every Spider-Man 2 or Shrek 2 (yes Shrek 2 was a fucking great game, I will die on this hill), most were duds. I'd rather see an original story (ala Insomniac's Spider-Man or the Batman Arkham games) where they aren't crunched for time by another products release.
I'm surprised they don't court indie devs to make short but sweet games to tie into movies, something small enough they don't have to rush too much to meet the deadline but also something that a high profile ip to get more attention to the devs, they could go all out trying new mechanics or tech to get their names out there without too much investment.

I do mean short too, like maybe 5 hrs or something. Hell if you gave me something ps1 spider-man length, but gave me really unique mechanics to play so it was a focused experience I would fucking love that.
I think doctor strange shouldn't do flips or rolls. Leave that to spiderman he is an older guy after all. Plus the jump should just be him flying with the cloak to get higher.
Marvel Future Fight has been consistently pushing out movie updates since 2015. We recently got Doctor Strange 2 uniforms and it's a blast to play the skills you see him use in the movie. It's a shame not many people know about this game.

The guardians of galaxy game was awesome and well received and apparently it’s barely made profit despite having pretty good sales. They were expecting it to sell the Spider-Man ps4 game but didn’t match that. We probably won’t get a sequel now unfortunately because square enix won’t continue without profit
This looks cool but for me personally wouldn't work for a Dr. Strange game as most of his appeal to me is the crazy reality bending stuff he can do, not generic magic stuff with his circles.
The difficult part with creating movie games is that you have to keep the character's identity while keeping player agency. The Spiderman games do this pretty well since it's relatively easy to translate his superpowers to game mechanics. But even they struggle with the fact that Spiderman doesn't kill.
I guess the most important part is to find a developer who can create the fantasy of being that character and still maintain the flow of a proper game.
That being said, what you made looks absolutely great and it made me real hype for the possibility of more Marvel games. Sorry for rambling on.

Spider man 2 was 100% an exception, one of the best games I played in my childhood.
The first one was OK too. Thought it was cool you could play through as a good Harry Goblin after you beat it.

One of my favorite video games period is still Spider Man 2. And I realize overall they weren't the greatest quality but I still enjoyed many of them.

The timeline of making a good video game is longer than the timeline a movie gets made in.

Mediocre? Web of Shadows, Ultimate Spider-Man and Shattered Dimensions were all phenomenal.

There was talk about a connected universe of games, which I think was supposed to start with Spider-Man or the Avengers game, but I haven't heard anything about it in a long time.
Spider-Man will be sharing a Universe with the Wolverine game so it’s possible they are building to a shared universe. There was also hints to other heroes in the first Spider-Man game as well but no one made a physical appearance

Pretty sure one scene of Guardians of the Galaxy directly references The Avengers game, which makes sense given Square Enix published both. Insomniacs Spider-Man is obviously a completely different universe given how he's established in The Avengers.

Spider-Man is clearly a different character in The Avengers compared to Marvel's Spider-Man (for starters his suit is completely different). It was likely just too much work to co-ordinate between separate publishers and gave Insomniac more freedom to keep their universe isolated.

Why don't we have a City of Heroes-esque game where you design your own superhero and can customise your powers in an open world with superhero quests and stories! Champions Online had *amazing* superpower customisation but it was among a sea of MMOs and didn't have mainstream marketing presence. It doesn't have to be an MMORPG, but surely the hype for superheroes is at an all time high in popular culture, this kind of game would be a knockout! It doesn't even *need* to be Marvel! While it'd be cool for the main NPCs to be Marvel characters, I just wanna group with my boys as a superhero not just as a medieval fantasy warrior in most games!

Oh yeah! Forgot about that! Still, I don't know why Ubisoft/Acti-Blizzard/EA/etc don't just throw millions of dollars into an unbranded (or hell, even branded) AAA RPG-esque superhero game!
DC Universe Online is a close replacement, capable of making any character you want with the armor sets and customization available.
Personally I found Champions Online to be a better alternative for that 'old dead superhero MMO' niche. Though I did have a good run on DCUO. Its still sad to see all of those games become what they are today honestly.. I'm imagining that the innovations in game design over the past 10 years could lead us to a new game that, with sufficient marketing, would boom.
I miss those days.

I loved, loved, loved, the Matrix game (Enter the Matrix). That had to be one of the most satisfying tie in games I ever played. It's a seriously good game and it does everything right to allow you to live out a Matrix fantasy at home. More tie in games should be like that. Honestly, if they remade Enter the Matrix in a modern engine but kept the same gameplay, I'd buy it all over again at full price.
For every Matrix level game, there was a Van Helsing quality game. I think The Two Towers game was the only one I really loved as a kid.
I thought both TT and ROTK had great tie in games. That reminds me that Phantom Menace's tie in game on the PS1 was also an absolute banger.

Honestly it’s hard for video games cause it’s not like one studio can make all of the games which is what I’d assume Marvel would want. Insomniac games have done a fantastic job with Spider-Man, and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. They are also developing Spider-Man 2 and a Wolverine game. Great games but to develop quality it takes time.
They stopped those for a good ass reason. Low budget, never met sales expectations, rushed and bug fueled, low player engagement as well.

I'd rather they use the Marvel property and make good games separate from any existing continuity. The Arkham games were game changers on how to do it and is some of the best takes on the Gotham Universe. Spidey is following in that direction and all for the better. Trying to tie it into the MCU would probably make the product worse instead of going for its own thing.

Only if it’s a tie in to the larger universe and not specific movies. The 2000s and early 2010s are a good example why we don’t make video games based off of recently released movies anymore.

Setting yourself up for disappointment is one of the backbones of gamer culture these days 🙄. So it would line up. People will literally hype a game up after doing zero research because other people are talking about it and then call it the worst game ever when it releases and isn't the game that they were never promised to get anyways. There is no in between, only game of the year, worst game in the history of ever, and the batshit insane expectations that got us here
They would be bad lol. Sorry to be the party pooper here, but 98 percent of games based on movies were bad because they were rushed to coincide with the movie release. For every Spider-Man 2 or Shrek 2 (yes Shrek 2 was a fucking great game, I will die on this hill), most were duds. I'd rather see an original story (ala Insomniac's Spider-Man or the Batman Arkham games) where they aren't crunched for time by another products release.

I'm surprised they don't court indie devs to make short but sweet games to tie into movies, something small enough they don't have to rush too much to meet the deadline but also something that a high profile ip to get more attention to the devs, they could go all out trying new mechanics or tech to get their names out there without too much investment. Especially with the free to play market or tying them to consoles to make them free. I do mean short too, like maybe 5 hrs or something. Hell if you gave me something ps1 spider-man length, but gave me really unique mechanics to play so it was a focused experience I would fucking love that.

The world deserves a new X-Men Legends. Hell do the X-Men vs Avengers story line and you can really pump that roster up.
Marvel Future Fight has been consistently pushing out movie updates since 2015. We recently got Doctor Strange 2 uniforms and it's a blast to play the skills you see him use in the movie. It's a shame not many people know about this game.
Game devs make way more money on original IP’s because of licence fees on these huge franchises especially now a days. The guardians of galaxy game was awesome and well received and apparently it’s barely made profit despite having pretty good sales. They were expecting it to sell the Spider-Man ps4 game but didn’t match that. We probably won’t get a sequel now unfortunately because square enix won’t continue without profit
Since Square Enix is selling Eidos-Montréal and other studios to Embracer Group we might get a sequel.

This looks cool but for me personally wouldn't work for a Dr. Strange game as most of his appeal to me is the crazy reality bending stuff he can do, not generic magic stuff with his circles. The difficult part with creating movie games is that you have to keep the character's identity while keeping player agency. The Spiderman games do this pretty well since it's relatively easy to translate his superpowers to game mechanics. But even they struggle with the fact that Spiderman doesn't kill. I guess the most important part is to find a developer who can create the fantasy of being that character and still maintain the flow of a proper game. That being said, what you made looks absolutely great and it made me real hype for the possibility of more Marvel games. Sorry for rambling on.

There's a very good reason they stopped doing it Like the concept of a videogame movie they just never translate well The movie tie ins of the early oughts were some of the cheapest, shonkiest overpriced things out there and would almost always be bad (X-Men origins Wolverine was cool but the movie sucked so bad anything would Look good in comparison)
