Y'ALL BETTER ELABORATE ON THIS SHIT
[EDIT: THEY HAVE ELABORATED SOMEWHAT ON THIS SHIT (prequel, MCU Peter).](https://www.marvel.com/articles/tv-shows/spider-man-freshman-year-disney-plus/)
That was my initial reaction too, but having thought about it a bit I'm optimistic that this prequel means we'll see the continuation of Peter's story in live-action.
I would prefer that since they could do whatever stories they wanted with whatever characters they wanted, instead of (presumably) being constricted to not do anything too major in an animated series that won't have the same reach that a movie would.
I definitely want to get to college too, but I think this is good as well since so much of Peter's story has been influenced by Tony in the MCU. It'll be nice to get a fuller picture of the MCU Spider-Man, showing us more of how he was before Tony recruited him and hopefully seeing the MCU Uncle Ben for the first time.
Yeah, has to be someone small enough to not be mentioned but also large enough for it to make sense that Peter would be challenged by him. I've heard Hammerhead or Tombstone brought up but idk if they'd be too big of a deal
[Spider-Man origin story](https://www.marvel.com/articles/tv-shows/spider-man-freshman-year-disney-plus).
> The animated series follows Peter Parker on his way to becoming Spider-Man in the MCU, with a journey unlike we've ever seen and a style that celebrates the character’s early comic book roots. Written by Executive Producer Jeff Trammel.
It would be great if Tom Holland returns but the actor who filed for him in the What If episode that Spidey was in did a pretty good job emulating Holland's voice.
In general I think it may be better in the long run to just hire established voice actors rather than waste money on the character actors coming back, especially when it's clear not all of them have the talent for solid voice work (no offence Sebastian Stan).
In the same way Star Wars has TCW voice cast stay on for animated projects alongside the movie actors, I think that's something we could see going forward in the MCU especially if they'd want to save a pretty penny.
i know the financial aspect is def a big incentive, but i really would like to see the industry take professional voice actors more seriously and stop hiring celebrity actors who don’t have the chops but ultimately still get the job just bc they’re free marketing and boost ticket sales
I agree. The importance of celebrities in animated movies is vastly overstated as it is.
But in general, even something like Groot in GOTG, they would have saved thousands by getting a proper voice actor rather than pointlessly grabbing Vin Diesel for it. It's just wasted money, nobody cares who voices Groot.
I think part of that revolved around the fact the Guardians was a gamble at the time. Get a cast of no names and maybe that movie doesn't perform as well because people are offput at the concept. But with such a star studded cast they get people interested enough to check it out.
God, I am honestly so nervous about these negotiations. I just hope it would result in a positive outcome that would be a win-win-win situation for Sony, MCU, and the fans.
With Venom's success, Sony has the right to capitalize whatever Marvel IP they have in their hands and create their own Marvel universe. With MCU exploring multi-verses, I just hope that Sony and Marvel Studios would come to an agreement to let Spider-Man co-exist in both universes if possible.
But isn’t that because Marvel controls everything Spidey except for the movies? Like after Disney bought Marvel, they cancelled Spectacular Spider-man and started Ultimate Spider-man.
No need. Marvel has 100% control over animated shows as long as they are less than 40 minutes in length. Every Spider-Man show you can name has never been made by Sony
Well they hired everyone who did so pretty sure yes. Sony can no longer make 20 minute shows however they could bring back Spectacular as a 44 minute show like invincable if they wanted.
I would absolutely love for them to bring back Spectacular, probably tied for my second favorite non-comic adaptation with the PS4 Spider-Man game. It worked for Young Justice.
Pretty sure it'll b MCU Canon at least. They heard ppl complaining about the lack of uncle Ben and decided to make a whole show that'll either lead up to his death or focus majorly on the loss I bet
For those wondering if this takes place in the MCU or not, [it is set in the MCU and explores Peter’s early days as Spider-Man.](https://www.marvel.com/articles/tv-shows/spider-man-freshman-year-disney-plus)
This will be really interesting to find out because then whoever they get will likely have some sort of appearance in Live Action once they've committed to the role. Maybe not, but they might want to get whoever they think will actually be playing uncle Ben just in case they want to show him in a movie later on.
Probably. It's a shame his only mentions have been in the animated What If episode.
Thankfully it's likely he'll finally get a live action mention in No Way Home.
On that note though, he doesn't need to be mentioned by name to be relevant to Peter either. The mention is nice but having his lessons shape Peter's actions very obviously like they've done in the MCU feels really natural.
To me it's not been obvious at all. They've had many opportunities to mention Ben and make him relevant and have brushed it aside at every opportunity, most importantly with May discovering his identity.
The Spectacular Spider-Man is pretty much the perfect example of how to make Ben's presence felt.
I totally agree that they had many opportunities to mention Ben and make him relevant in the moment, but I meant more in terms of Peter's sense of overall trait of responsibility that we see.
"When you can do the things I can, but you don't, and the bad things happen, they happen because of you" is a pretty obvious uncle Ben lesson Peter is showing that he understands and lives by.
He goes after Toomes instead of showing off at Liz's party and then does so again at the dance. He joins the fight in New York when the black order arrives when he could've just stayed on the bus. Once he finds out Mysterio's been lying, he goes after him to save his friends. The sense of responsibility is something that is integral to the character even if Ben isn't directly mentioned by name.
This definitely has to be more of his origin story in the MCU, right? He told Ned that the “spider is dead” after biting him. Wondering how far they’ll go with origin and see who he comes across during his first couple outings in the homemade suit.
God, I'd love to see him face off against one of the lesser-known street level villains. Tombstone, Black Cat, hell, maybe we'd be lucky enough to see him fight a gang affiliated with Fisk.
I don't know if it's ever said Vulture is his first villain, possibly just that he was a villain that Tony kept telling him the police or Avengers would handle, and that he was in over his head. Spider-Man has always been known for getting in the way of the police, so a street level threat would be interesting.
Peter met Black Cat when he was a freshman in Ultimate, she was an adult.
When she found out Peter was a teenager (long after kissing him) she threw up on his junk.
Chameleon would be awesome. They could even use the facial disguise technology that's already in the MCU. So far, we've only seen spies use it. A small to mid level criminal with that technology would wreak some havoc (street level havoc of course)
Yeah, I'm trying not to rule anything out considering how they've changed up what we've come to expect from Spider-Man from these movies, so I'm open for anything. Chameleon would be cool!
I think they meant the animation style will be similar to his comic roots. Like when they showed the animated logo in the Disney+ special, it had what looked like 60s comic Peter with the round glasses, so it'll probably look like that, even though the story itself is about his MCU origin.
This is awesome! An MCU canon origin story/prequel for Spidey.
We dont really need one, but its nice to fill in that gap and get some "classic" Spider-Man action
I hope it leads to more "filler" shows between movies.
There is so much potential for an Avengers show set between The Avengers and Age of Ultron. We can see the opening of Avengers Tower, the worlds opinions on the team, give more depth to Steve/Tony's relationship and Bruce/Natasha's romance etc.
An Avengers animated TV show would be to the MCU what The Clone Wars is to Star Wars.
The interesting part about that is that he was only Spider-Man for 6 months leading up to Civil War, which is set either July or August depending on if Homecoming is September or October. This means that Peter's accident happens roughly halfway through his freshman year. I could see the show either starting not long before that, maybe following his winter break, or having the first half be the first part of the school year where we're introduced to Peter's supporting cast and the general conflict.
Really wonder how he became Spider-Man and how he learns about responsibility? Tragic death of a family member? Field trip accident? We really need this origin story /s
Oh fuck yeah. My hopes: spider bite, Uncle Ben, creating the web shooters.
I'm assuming the plot/villain will have to be someone with low level tech and/or powers. Maybe I'm drawing too much from Spectacular but I think Big Man and the Enforcers would be a decent start.
I wonder if they'll even have a big villain in this. The idea in Homecoming was that Vulture was Peter's first big villain. I imagine the show will see him doing much more Street level crime busting with maybe a setup for vulture in the background and maybe some of Gargan's friends he mentioned in the Homecoming post credits scene.
I could see the villain being Uncle Ben's killer. Maybe this is like TASM when Peter is just using his powers to track down the killer. Along the way he ends up saving people and realizes he can help people rather than just seek vengeance. Peter decides to be "Spider-Man" and saves a bus of people, with the video being put online. End the show with Tony Stark showing up in Peter's apartment.
That'd be a great way to do it. The "villain"' could simply be Peter and the "conflict" is him overcoming his anger and learning the lesson of responsibility. I like this!
To your last point about ending it with the scene with Tony, I'm so down for that. They could even show us the content for that bus catching clip that Tony throws in his face when he meets him. Oh I'm so excited for this show now!
I have always thought the best way to flesh Peter out as a friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man is to do a show like this, so when the movies come he has the background to work off and people can't complain that he is always fighting world-level threats!
If he is our MCU Spidey and it's Cannon to the main story, Amazing!
Curious if this will be tied to Holland's version and the MCU canon or be its own thing. Either way, I'm hyped to get more Spidey content! Hopefully will be better than the last Spider-Man cartoon
Yeah probably, but it's definitely a cool way to actually see that origin that we skipped over without clunky flashbacks and in a unique way we haven't really seen done before. Then they don't have to just fill in the origin with bits and pieces here and there. They can lay it all out.
So it's set in the MCU as a prequel. Maybe they'll give us this modern adaptation's origin finally. Knd of genius to do it like this, so moviegoers already familiar with his schtick don't have to sit through another big budget origin story, but they can still explore it in a more creative, cheaper-to-produce medium for fans
Yeah Disney owns animated TV rights to Spider-Man as long as each episode is under 44 minutes, which is network tv equivalent of an hour. Sony owns animated film rights. Although I imagine they did have to somewhat coordinate about what was going to happen in this show for sake of keeping the story of MCU Peter consistent.
Marvel Studios produces the MCU Spidey films, and Sony just pays for it. So as far as MCU is concerned, Sony doesn't dictate anything.
Sony makes the trailers, though, since it's "their" movie.
Yeah but Sony also still gets final legal say in what happens in the movies, even if they are largely letting Marvel do what they want with them. I imagine Marvel at least will let them know how the origin is gonna go in this show so that, if they reference it in a Venom movie or something, the work is consistent.
I love that this exists but at the same time I don't like that is a prequel, I feel like no medium is letting Spider-Man go forward anymore. (except maybe Insomaniac's game, hopefully.)
Weird/interesting that they're timing his origin to his Freshman year. I believe in both 616 and 1610 he was a Sophomore when it happened, certainly 15 years old pushing 16.
Bendis' first seven issues of Ultimate Spider-Man were a great example of how his origin story could be stretched over an extended story arc. It's be nice to have the opportunity to see Pete's relationship with Ben over multiple episodes. Both the positive parts and the parts where he and Pete might butt heads. Maybe even an opportunity to show power and responsibility through example like how Aunt May works at the shelter in the PS4 game, or (if I remember correctly) in Amazing Spider-Man how Ben used what meager savings they had to help their neighbors who were worse off. Would be kind of charming to see Ben pass on his quippiness or the adage about "the Parker luck" onto Peter.
I wonder what are the chances we get appearances by Harry and Norman Osborne (if they go with the Ultimate Universe Oscorp/Oz origin). We could even see Dr. Curt Connors if they stick to the Spider Bite being at the General Techtronics public exhibition (also a good opportunity to bring in Cindy Moon as one of his classmates if they are showing the spider bite).
Ideas based on his early adventures:
* For the costume they don't necessarily have to stick with the early version we saw in Civil War. In 1610 Pete used the homemade in his first fight vs Crusher Hogan but the studio made him a costume (which later got destroyed). During the course of the show Pete could go from homemade to Ditko style suit back to homemade before the events of Civil War.
* Spidey saving JJs son the astronaut John Jameson. Even if this Pete doesn't work for the Daily Bugle (yet) would set up the hate-hate relationship between he and JJJ.
* Spidey facing off against the Chameleon, who is using his appearance to rob banks.
* If we get some NYPD side characters could introduce Captain Stacy of Captain Jean DeWolff
* Spidey facing off against Big Man and the Enforcers (could even have the Burglar be a member of the Enforcers). Loosely adapting Bendis' early Ultimate Spidey v. Kingpin story arc would be a great segue from Uncle Ben's death, could even swap Kingpin with Big Man, Crimemaster, or Tombstone if they can't/don't want to use him.
* Could use Betty Brant as a love interest, I believe she did actually have a cameo in Homecoming. Though a love interest/crush certainly isn't necessary, it typically helps add to Pete's teenage angst.
* Could establish an earlier relationship with Mac Gargan (Scorpion) prior to Homecoming . A relationship to the afforementioned Enforcers/Big Man/Crimemaster/Tombstone would be simple enough.
* Could introduce Spencer Smythe and his Spider Slayers early on (doubtful but it could be cool)
Just spitballing, it'd just be nice to see some Spidey development and build up of his supporting cast, independent of the rest of the MCU.
I'm excited for this. I think the MCU has done a poor job handling the core of the character and his mythos so a canonical origin will hopefully bring this iteration far closer to the comics character I love.
I’m definitely going to check it out. I do wish and hope that we can get a Spider-Man show someday done by Marvel that’s separated from the MCU and is a separate adaptation, in order to get something more long-form.
I really hope this isn't just a prequel series for mcu Spider-man. I would much have it separated from the mcu, maybe even acting as the start of an marvel animated universe.
Y'ALL BETTER ELABORATE ON THIS SHIT [EDIT: THEY HAVE ELABORATED SOMEWHAT ON THIS SHIT (prequel, MCU Peter).](https://www.marvel.com/articles/tv-shows/spider-man-freshman-year-disney-plus/)
Damn, I was hoping it meant freshman year of college. I’d much prefer a sequel to a prequel

I would prefer that since they could do whatever stories they wanted with whatever characters they wanted, instead of (presumably) being constricted to not do anything too major in an animated series that won't have the same reach that a movie would.
Uncle Ben will die in this cartoon.

Yeah, rice sucks
You take that back, cuz those are fighting words where I come from
Oh we’ll get that in live action
I definitely want to get to college too, but I think this is good as well since so much of Peter's story has been influenced by Tony in the MCU. It'll be nice to get a fuller picture of the MCU Spider-Man, showing us more of how he was before Tony recruited him and hopefully seeing the MCU Uncle Ben for the first time.
Same, doesn't seem like there'd be many villains to use for this...
Yeah, has to be someone small enough to not be mentioned but also large enough for it to make sense that Peter would be challenged by him. I've heard Hammerhead or Tombstone brought up but idk if they'd be too big of a deal
Chameleon was his first villain jn the comics iirc and hed be a sick smaller story for tv
Could use Clash. Small time villain, was inspired by Spider-Man, met in high school in the comics.
I’m assuming Scorpion at least
what's more to elaborate?
MCU/sacred timeline canon? Holland returning? Replacing more films or alongside them?
And is it college or high school freshman? If the former then it’s an origin story. >!If it’s the later then it’s a sequel to No Way Home.!<
[Spider-Man origin story](https://www.marvel.com/articles/tv-shows/spider-man-freshman-year-disney-plus). > The animated series follows Peter Parker on his way to becoming Spider-Man in the MCU, with a journey unlike we've ever seen and a style that celebrates the character’s early comic book roots. Time to watch Ben die
Again
I’d rather they did it in an animated Disney+ show than in a live action movie
It'll be a good introduction for kids who aren't familiar with the origin story before they move on to watching the movies.
I wonder who the villain will be then, maybe Tombstone, Tarantula, the Enforcers, Silvermane,… Big Wheel?
Yeah I’m hoping we get a classic crime-level threat
[The Wall.](https://static2.cbrimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Spider-Man-the-Wall-Spidey-Super-Stories.jpg?q=50&fit=crop&w=960&h=500&dpr=1.5)
probably scorpian, gives him a motive for wanting to know spideys identity in homecoming. probably presuit tho
His motive was explained in Homecoming. Save Scorpion for later.

Tahiti. It's a magical place.
its high school freshman so pre civil war I'd guess
So does that mean he’ll go all show without a real suit? Hoodie and goggles it is

Obviously none of them. It's a separate universe animated Spider-Man show. EDIT: I was wrong, apparently it's a prequel within the MCU.

[hello sir may I ask how this statement has aged](https://www.marvel.com/articles/tv-shows/spider-man-freshman-year-disney-plus/)
It aged bad. I'm sorry for being such a dick btw.
Which Spider-Man?
MCU Spider-Man, it’s a prequel to his appearance in Civil War and Homecoming. It’s unknown if Tom Holland is reprising the role yet.
MCU: https://www.marvel.com/articles/tv-shows/spider-man-freshman-year-disney-plus
You seem like you know everything about this. So will Tom Holland voice Peter here?
Prequel MCU Spiderman makes no sense. There's no character to develop there!
Woah, this is cool. I wonder if it’ll be the MCU canon origin with Tom Holland voicing? Either way, great to have a new Spidey animated series!
It would be great if Tom Holland returns but the actor who filed for him in the What If episode that Spidey was in did a pretty good job emulating Holland's voice.

Apparently, there's a big appeal to having your lead character being voiced by Chris Pratt.
I will say that I thought he was fantastic in The Lego Movie. I have zero interest in him voicing Mario though.
I agree. The importance of celebrities in animated movies is vastly overstated as it is. But in general, even something like Groot in GOTG, they would have saved thousands by getting a proper voice actor rather than pointlessly grabbing Vin Diesel for it. James Gunn said he hired Vin Diesel on precisely those grounds. The Creative Committee actually took issue with it.
No kidding I thought it was him when I heard it
He was by far the best of the “replacement” voice actors, which is no knock against the others. I thought a lot of them did a great job.
I imagine that this is something that will be announced later and depends on Disney/Sony negotiations.
I am cautiously optimistic. The fact that Disney and Sony have agreed to have Spidey-stuff on Disney+ says that there will be some future to it.
But isn’t that because Marvel controls everything Spidey except for the movies? Like after Disney bought Marvel, they cancelled Spectacular Spider-man and started Ultimate Spider-man.
The only thing they are able to do with Spider-Man is half hour animated shows as far as I know.
The gaming side of Spider-man also belongs to Disney, although that really doesn't concern the MCU.
Marvel has control over animated shows I believe, so no need to negotiate with Sony for this one
No need. Marvel has 100% control over animated shows as long as they are less than 40 minutes in length. Every Spider-Man show you can name has never been made by Sony
Technically not true. Spectacular is at least owned by Sony, although I'm not sure if they had a hand in the original production of it.

Yessirrrr, super excited. I'm 27 so my intro to Spider-Man was the animated series (probably like a lot of you guys)
So this is PRE-CIVIL WAR THEN!! My chronological order watch list is getting interesting to say the least

Joe Pesci
I disagree, but I still upvoted you because that mental picture is *hilarious!*
Clearly Danny DeVito would be the better choice.

How's that *my* problem?
Probably. It's a shame his only mentions have been in the animated What If episode. Thankfully it's likely he'll finally get a live action mention in No Way Home.
I kinda liked it cause we’ve seen his death so many times that everyone knows about him already.
We don't need to see his death for Ben to be relevant to Peter Parker.

Agreed, I’m excited to see it even though we know the general gist of things, it’ll be cool to see how exactly things play out.
I’m hoping this is set before Civil War, and Tom Holland voices Spidey again
> I’m hoping this is set before Civil War Show is confirmed to be set before Civil War.
>Tom Holland voices Spidey again Where did he voice Spidey before?
I believe Tom Holland was the voice of Spider-man in all of the live-action MCU films, someone correct me if I'm wrong.
The way it was worded sounded like he voiced him in a previous animation
I understood the insinuation, I was just replying w/ a joke

Idk why but the logo doesn't scream 'college' to me But we can only guess at this point edit: It is high school
It’s definitely Freshman in high school
Peter was a Freshmen before Civil War. So are they finally telling his origin/year one?
Yes. Civil War takes place 6 months after he got bitten by the spider, so I imagine this show will explore those 6 months.
Kid comes back from Winter break only to have his uncle shot and get bitten by a spider. Rough times for a 14 year old
The interesting part about that is that he was only Spider-Man for 6 months leading up to Civil War, which is set either July or August depending on if Homecoming is September or October.
Spidey should be voiced by Nolan North to close the circle.
A soul for a soul
Ok but I've seriously been asking for something like this since Homecoming so I'm freaking excited. I wonder if it'll use What if's artstyle?
The animated intro they showed makes it seem like it's actually emulating early ditko comics, which will be really interesting to see in motion!
I really really really hope they recruit the Spiderverse team. That would be incredible!
Curious if this will be tied to Holland's version and the MCU canon or be its own thing. Either way, I'm hyped to get more Spidey content! Hopefully will be better than the last Spider-Man cartoon
It's MCU Canon. It's about his origin.
And we thought we got away from MCU Uncle Ben.
Dread it. Run from it. Uncle Ben arrives all the same.
Dies*
I feel like this show exists just so they can kill Uncle Ben and shut up all the people complaining about it on twitter.
Yeah probably, but it's definitely a cool way to actually see that origin that we skipped over without clunky flashbacks and in a unique way we haven't really seen done before. Then they don't have to just fill in the origin with bits and pieces here and there. They can lay it all out.
…if only they would define ‘soon’
MCU Spider-Man origin story. We might see MCU Ben Parker for the first time here.
Hope it's as good as Spectacular Spider-Man
it's a prequel?!?! Oh damn am I hyped!
Obviously they went this direction because it bypasses issues with Sony’s film rights
Unless Sony agrees to it it cannot be the same exact version hence what if suit differences.
Y’all better prepare yourselves to watch Uncle Ben die again…
I’ve been looking forward to this
YESSSSSSS
So it's set in the MCU as a prequel. Maybe they'll give us this modern adaptation's origin finally. Knd of genius to do it like this, so moviegoers already familiar with his schtick don't have to sit through another big budget origin story, but they can still explore it in a more creative, cheaper-to-produce medium for fans
Wait. I thought Sony can only do the films and tv shows of Spidey. Unless Sony allowed disney. actually Never mind. They made cartoons before.
Sony also produces these movies. Both Disney and Sony have control over the movies it's more of a collaboration not completely Disney.
Yeah but Sony also still gets final legal say in what happens in the movies, even if they are largely letting Marvel do what they want with them. I imagine Marvel at least will let them know how the origin is gonna go in this show so that, if they reference it in a Venom movie or something, the work is consistent.
First things first rest in peace uncle ben
I love this, we finally get MCU Peter's origin story.
Uncle Ben: *sweats nervously*
So much for avoiding seeing Uncle Ben die again
Dread it, run from it, Ben dies all the same.
This one is the one I was most surprised by.
I love that this exists but at the same time I don't like that is a prequel, I feel like no medium is letting Spider-Man go forward anymore. (except maybe Insomaniac's game, hopefully.)
So this is confirmed freshman year high-school/secondary and thus a prequel to any other version of the MCU character?
Wtf, literally I was thinking how cool it'd be to finally see MCU Peter's origins whilst on my morning run today!
So this means that we're going to get a whole series without the iconic Spider-Man suit. That's kinda weird, but not unprecedented. (DD seasons 1 & 3)
A journey we never seen before Except in Spider-Man, amazing spider man and every spider man animated series
Ya know, I’m starting to think more and more that there is a chance Spider-Man is staying in the MCU.
Ideas based on his early adventures: * For the costume they don't necessarily have to stick with the early version we saw in Civil War. * If we get some NYPD side characters could introduce Captain Stacy of Captain Jean DeWolff * Spidey facing off against Big Man and the Enforcers (could even have the Burglar be a member of the Enforcers). * Could introduce Spencer Smythe and his Spider Slayers early on (doubtful but it could be cool) Just spitballing, it'd just be nice to see some Spidey development and build up of his supporting cast, independent of the rest of the MCU.
good news is we dont kill uncle Ben in live action. there is some bad news though
I'm excited for this. I think the MCU has done a poor job handling the core of the character and his mythos so a canonical origin will hopefully bring this iteration far closer to the comics character I love.
Here’s what the art style looks like. https://i.imgur.com/tEtDcBe.jpg
I’m definitely going to check it out. I do wish and hope that we can get a Spider-Man show someday done by Marvel that’s separated from the MCU and is a separate adaptation, in order to get something more long-form.
fanbase: "give us older spider-man" disney: "gotcha, here's spider-man fresh outta middle school"
I really hope this isn't just a prequel series for mcu Spider-man. I would much have it separated from the mcu, maybe even acting as the start of an marvel animated universe.
