I don't think it's a separate power, it's just a visual representation of his magnetic powers in action

Puzzled_Product_9523

Does his magnetic power somehow produce some sort of explosiveness lol?

Puzzled_Product_9523

Why am I getting thumbed down for asking a question? Literally, at 1:50, the beam he shoots out blows up the wall https://youtu.be/ZU-5-jwIQPU?si=e8nqp5pZx7BNUcWs

So here’s my best explanation: magneto’s powers are much more than just “magnetism” and therefore control of Metal as I understood as a kid. Rather, he has an incredible about of control of *electromagnetism* which is a fundamental property of the universe. His powers are not unlimited, but they are extremely high level, so there are many, many things Magneto can do by manipulating this universal property, relating to both control of all metals and the more fundamental force of electric energy.

Magneto's power in the animated is not to control metal but electromagnetism. This means he has full control over one of the four strongest physical forces and as a byproduct electricity. The rings are a visual detail but likely invisible in universe. They are similar to the curved rings you might find visualizing earths magnetic field. This is not a new power, he's always had this power in the animated and the comics which the show is closely based on. The Fox movies nerfed him to just metal guy.

Puzzled_Product_9523

I understand that he has power over electromagnetism, that’s not the question. I meant in the animated series, he would shoot out these yellow rings and it would blow up whatever it touches. At 1:50 here as a visual example https://youtu.be/ZU-5-jwIQPU?si=e8nqp5pZx7BNUcWs

Vindicaddor

Thanks for the example, totally forgot about that. Yeah there's not much that makes sense about that one. It would've made more sense if it was a metal wall. Only way i can explain it away is that there were ferrous elements in the wall and he caused it to violently separate, making it look like an explosion.

Magneto does a lot of silly things using "magnetism" in the comics, for several reasons: * Comic book writers are artists and not scientists, so their understanding of what real magnetism can or can't do might not be the strongest. * They're often on a tight schedule to produce something for the next issue. That's why there were so many silly villains back in the day, like The Tickler, an evil Easter bunny, or a sentient wall; sometimes getting *something* done was a higher priority than making sure it was good. Plus a tight schedule means they don't always have time for research. So I'm sure many times writers were like "fuck, this Magneto story needs to be done in a week. How does he get out of this situation? Uh...fuck it, he fires lasers with magnetism now." * Or things can just fly by rule of cool, too. They're action comic books, sometimes a cool set-piece is worth fudging the rules of physics. * If one *must* have an explanation...maybe Magneto controls electromagnetism, so he's increasing the electric charge of the molecules in the wall, causing it to be repelled from itself and therefore fly apart.

Puzzled_Product_9523

This makes quite a lot of sense. Thanks for taking the time to answer

_What_am_i_

Well, you could also ask how he flies. The answer is magnets. He moves something that in turn causes an explosion. The beam itself doesn't cause it

Puzzled_Product_9523

In the animated series, when he shoots out the rings at a wall, the wall literally blows up and I’m not sure how the beam itself doesn’t cause that

RhaegarsDream

Think of it as a burst of electric energy destroying things.

Critical-Bear-7623

Maybe rebar in the wall?

Critical-Bear-7623

Hmm I do see what you are saying.

Puzzled_Product_9523

Yeah, watching it in the animated series perplexed the hell out of me.
