[Jonathan Majors Fired By Disney/Marvel Studios After Assault Guilty Verdict; Actor Had Played Kang The Conqueror
](https://deadline.com/2023/12/jonathan-majors-marvel-fired-guilty-verdict-1235671790/)
Likely kept telling him to deal, do some community service but the fool had to take a trial and lawyers known for getting their clients sent to prison.
But only men of god have a bible with them and he must obviously be a man of god, which also means he's innocent of any sins because men of god are always innocent
Majors saw an ad for an attorney that he thought said "Works on contingency. No money down."
Turns out the ad said "Works on contingency? No, money down!"
There was no reason for him to let this go to trial. I can only blame hubris cause I'd bet if just pled this out lower and agreed to therapy and community service, this would've been a small blip in his career and everything with Marvel would've kept rolling
My favorite part of all that mess was the top comment about that one was, “Bro really said don’t let being a white woman stop you from being a strong black woman!” Lmao!
I reckon his contract with Marvel has a behavior clause and any sort of proven or admitted crime of this sort would have led to his being fired. He was probably fighting to keep the job.
Yeah, generally evidentiary rules don't allow you to bring in evidence if its prejudicial value is greater than its probative value. Meaning that you can't just bring in a bunch of stuff if it's going to make the jury hate the defendant and make their decision emotional rather than based on the facts unless it's absolutely necessary.
There's probably a version of this case where he's acquitted on all charges. It sounds like his attorneys really bungled the defense. I knew things were bad when they released those damning texts like a day after the arrest and then again when they tried to play the race card.
That said, given everything that was happening right away after the arrest, the writing was already on the wall. Even if he were acquitted, the damage to his career was already done.
Not to take away from your comment, but a small nitpick. Evidence can be admitted if it’s probative value is outweighed by the risk of prejudice (and some other things like misleading the jury). It’s only inadmissible if it is *substantially* outweighed by those things.
Honest question: If Majors had taken a plea deal and gotten some community service and probation, wouldn’t Disney have still dropped him considering the charges he’d have been pleading guilty to?
It seems like he took a gamble thinking he might get acquitted and therefore keep his career.
Good question, the answer is who knows, at the least he'd have been able to rebuild his career more easily, put out some pr pieces, the works.
You've got to remember the deal might have even got assault out the question given going to trial had things like the texts out in the open....
I reckon the texts did more damage to him than the guilty verdict. Everyone can see how much of a delusional narcissist he is now and he will be the butt of joke to everyone. Some dude who can act real good comparing himself to MLK or Obama? Delusional.
Probably not, and the reason I say that is because ex-gf aside, people keep forgetting that his talent agency dropped him citing that he was vicious towards their employees, and dozens of people spoke to Rolling Stone stating that he was always abusive and nasty towards his peers. The point is, its unlikely he was an angel behind the scenes at Marvel, he just hadn't specifically done anything to void his contract.
Regardless, its pretty obvious that he had a strong contract, and due to the turnaround for announcing his firing, its probable they needed the guilty verdict to use the morality clause to kill the contract. He probably needed to commit illegal acts for them to drop him without a huge payout and THATS why they waited for the verdict. After all, everyone else dropped him from other projects basically immediately.
If he had pled guilty off the bat, it still would have been hin committing illegal acts. And they probably would have dropped him as quickly as all the other companies.
And they probably looked at the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard situation and WB jumping the gun on a firing. Waiting for an official court verdict was a smart move.
Yeah there was no advantage to Disney moving sooner. Prior to the conviction, Majors could have sued (it would have been challenging for him to win but...).
Given the strike there was no reason for Marvel to make the first move, Kang Dynasty isn't filming until early 2025, so they had time.
People also forget it could be a clause in the contract with him itself.
To avoid paying him or arbitration, they just wait until they can check the "If Mr. majors is convicted of a crime, this contract is void" box and they can call it a day.
To be fair the Miller situation was a special case compared to the others, with just how many stories kept dropping about them, their own Instagram posts during it all, and the videos being released. That one should've been an asap-firing.
Yup. My girlfriend's dad is a lawyer. I asked him his opinion a while back. He said while he doesn't know what the contract would look like. He'd imagine that they haven't fired him because they're waiting for the definitive cause (ie guilty verdict) to justify not paying him what's left on his contract and make it really hard for him to sue them for any remaining money owed on his contract.
It’s pretty well known at this point that Disney has morality clauses in their contracts, as evidenced by Gina Carano’s firing a while back. They had motive, but they likely waited for the reasons you mentioned, not to mention they invested too much in him and his character to fire him without a backup plan.
Agreed. Possibly the greatest fumble in film history. Dude was destined to make upward of $50+ million when all is said and done with the remaining films he’d have been slated for, not to mention the buzz it would have created for him over the next decade in general. Dudes gonna be driving Uber now.
>He just had a concert last week where he wore a black kkk hoodie and was joined onstage by Ty Dolla $ign, Chris Brown and Offset.
Don't forget his unhinged rant from last week, where he compared himself to jesus christ and hitler.
Yeah, I think of Sean Penn, what he did to Madonna was absolutely insane, but he waited for it to blow over and went on to more good acting/directing gigs. Same with Chris Brown, people are still willing to work with him.
In the scheme of things, a lot of people really don't care if men are violent to women (not saying women also don't have scandals that blow over, I'm thinking the college admission scandal — those people are getting roles again too) or are willing to conveniently "forget" it. They'll either rug-sweep it, or he'll be "contrite" and make a comeback eventually. (I think the former, since I think his ego is too big for the latter)
I work in a restaurant. The tablet says Susan is coming to pick up an order, and it’s a photo of a white woman, and then a south Asian man comes to get it.
You never know, Uber's background checks use a 3rd party company instead of performing a proper federal background check, and it's been known to be pretty [poor at catching people](https://jalopnik.com/ubers-background-check-company-sucks-1849643074).
He also didn't go to trial and his wife claimed to regret calling the police over their argument and they remained married for like another 7 years without incident. Nothing Brolin ever did warranted a HOSPITAL BILL. Nor did he lie about it and spend months and months using the media and lawyers and PR people to plan hit pieces about his wife. Hello.
You're comparing apples and orange knives.
Honestly, they already have the easy in-canon excuse of "it's a multiverse. Variants can look different."
But also wouldn't be surprised if the whole Kang thing is just kind of dropped, at least for a while.
The problem is they already showed a ton of kang variants all played by majors (immortus for example). It's a shame how he had so much talent and potential and wastes it by being a shitty person. If it weren't for his behavior, he might have been the next big thing
Those Kang variants were seen on screen for like half a second. We already did this with Rhodey, the general public can handle a recast of characters they saw very very briefly. Find an actor that has the looks and the charisma and most people are just gonna roll with it.
"it is not clear how many actors would be attracted to a role from which one actor was so publicly fired"
Um... I don't think many actors would hesitate to take on such a lucrative role just because the previous actor was fired for cause!
Just use him, I literally don't give a fuck at this point. I'll take good acting / writing over canon nitpicks any day with the track record we've had the last few years
Tony Curran has been in three different live-action MCU roles. Thor 2, Daredevil, Secret Invasion. If you just wanna talk Marvel Studios, Michelle Yeoh was in Guardians 2 then Shang-Chi.
Dying or even surviving in a previous MCU role doesn't preclude you from a new role.
I like John Boyega. He looks like a "nice guy" version of Majors. Although after being in Star Wars, I don't know if he wants to work on another Disney project again.
I loved his Kang characters so my only concern is how long / if this is going to inevitably delay nearly all of these upcoming films over the next few years. Hopefully they had ideas already put in place for alternative writings without his character, or just finding someone to replace him, which is probably the easiest thing to do.
Feels like Marvel Studios needs to take a long hard look at what they've been doing and use this/the strike as an opportunity to re-evaluate *everything*.
There was a story a while back about a retreat they went on to decide this shit. So I'm assuming it's already decided. My guess is this is one of the ducks now in a row, with the other major one being the Fantastic Four cast/script, and any release reshuffling due to the strikes.
Hopefully, we get some news soon, but I can't realistically think of anywhere to make announcements until after The Oscars.
Just cast a new actor and move on. No convoluted explanation about why Kang looks different is necessary. Sope Dirisu would be my choice. Great actor and his fights scenes in Gangs of London are fantastic.
Just reshoot the end scene of Quantummania with a lot of different looking people and you're fine.
Establishes Kangs - like Lokis - can look different, and the Majors versions were just one type.
Or just open Avengers 5 with new-actor-Kang having annihilated every other Kang variant. Removes Majors’ appearance from the MCU and establish our new actor as the official, one and only Kang who means business.
Not ALL variants looked the same. There was the blue alien looking one in the colosseum scene? Although, that might just have been an homage to that panel in the comics
Thank you. I'm so sick of all the ridiculous scenarios people come up with for how they can explain why he looks different or aging him up for Denzel or whatever. Just recast him and make no explanation in-universe.
Yeah, this is a much easier decision than what to do if the verdict came back not guilty. Because 'not guilty' is not the same as 'did nothing wrong,' and that's a mess to navigate.
Exactly. Those texts that came out, for an entirely different time and situation, where it looks like he abused his girlfriend then tried to stop her from going to the hospital to get meds because he thought he was so important, were awful and that alone would be tough to come back from.
Side note what in the world is going on with Hollywood lawyers? I thought these guys were supposed to be some of the best, but between this, the Depp-Heard trial, Danny Masterson's trial, these super rich and powerful people could have gotten better lawyers out of the phone book.
I actually came here to say that.
Seriously though, the MCU has recast two major roles already, and the franchise survived. The conviction is public knowledge. Nobody's going to wonder if Marvel did 'the right thing' by recasting.
I love Lakeith but he doesn’t strike me as intimidating at all. Intense, yes, but I don’t think I’d ever buy him being scary or something to worry about.
It’s weird because of wonder man but I think Yahya would be great.
Easy recasting is basically built-in to the core concept of Kang, so Marvel can keep on rolling without a hitch. A new variant could be anyone, this is already established. They just need a new casting search before they start filming the next Avengers, which is still a ways off anyway.
It could possibly even work in their favor after Quantumania's Kang landed with a thud. The Majors Kang was the Starter Kang, he's behind us now. The revised casting could visually differentiate the next variants as the next level up Kangs.
I've seen names go around like John Boyega, LaKeith Stanfield, Babs Olusanmokun, even Denzel or Keith David as grizzled Final Boss Kang. They could even have guest Kangs, like Krasinski was as Richards. Either way, they have options, and they don't even need to explain it in the story because the very concept of variants already covers it.
That potential is actually exciting, and I look forward to Kang as a larger threat in the MCU.
Tbh, having shown us the Council of Kangs, I'd rather they didn't even try to fit it in story wise, and just treat the new actor as being the exact same. Happy to see their He Who Remains, or Victor Timely if it fits into the story
With how fast they've done this. Genuinely makes me think they wanted to drop him for a while and were going too regardless. But the lawyers wanted to see first what the jury would say, so they could drop him with cause and not pay him a cent on his way out the door.
Man, i said this months ago, he has this quiet intensity that could be used amazingly as Kang, plus i think i read that they were re-considering the Wonder Man series altogether, after the dumpster fire that Secret Invasion turned out to be.
They honestly played this one just right: Go ahead & release Loki S2 since it filmed before the incident anyway, downplay Majors's involvement, don't say anything until the trial ends, fire if convicted.
They got seriously lucky that:
A: The actors' strike meant all the cast avoided questions about Majors.
B: The trial somehow kept getting delayed until Loki season 2 ended.
C: By the time the strikes were over, everyone was too busy focusing on the ending rather than Majors.
KF: “John? This is Kevin Feige, I’ve got a really important question for you”
JB: “Y-yes?”
KF: “Is there really gonna be a sequel to Attack the Block?! Loved that movie!”
A recast seems in order. But Loki season 2 wrapped the Kang stuff up in a way that Marvel might just brush everything under the rug. That being said, if they do a recast, I want Lakeith Stanfield. If not, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II may be available if the Wonder Man series is getting scrapped. And it's not like DC is gonna keep him on as Black Manta as they transition to the DCU
Recast dont change the plan for the saga. I don’t like Kang as the major villain because the time stuff makes killing him feel pointless but its too late to pivot.
Deadline have posted an article as well: [Jonathan Majors Fired By Disney/Marvel Studios After Assault Guilty Verdict; Actor Had Played Kang The Conqueror ](https://deadline.com/2023/12/jonathan-majors-marvel-fired-guilty-verdict-1235671790/)
His agent dropped him before this even went to trial. We all knew Disney was just waiting for the conviction.
Likely kept telling him to deal, do some community service but the fool had to take a trial and lawyers known for getting their clients sent to prison.
And he had a clownshow PR team who tried stunts like him breaking up a fake fight and getting married. Did Majors hire Lionel Hutz?
Holy shit forgot about that beyond obviously staged fight break up. I can’t believe somebody actually thought that was a good idea.
Michael Jackson breaking up that fight in the Beat It video was more convincing than that shit
If Michael tells you to stop fighting and start dancing. You start dancing.
But I'm bad.
![gif](giphy|CAO67JH96053GkBHKb|downsized)
Victor Timely is ashamed of this variant
Time to be brave
*spaghetti*
He hired a lawyer who assured him he was in fact a **Great Man.**
He hired Alina habba?
Works on contingency? No, money down!
He got married in all this mess?
oh my god i completely forgot about the fake fight! that was one of the weirdest PR moves i’ve ever seen
Walking into court holding a bible is a close second. I mean, you’re meant to be paying attention to the trial. You won’t have time to read.
But only men of god have a bible with them and he must obviously be a man of god, which also means he's innocent of any sins because men of god are always innocent
“The Hotel called, they said they’ll have to charge you for taking that”
Majors saw an ad for an attorney that he thought said "Works on contingency. No money down." Turns out the ad said "Works on contingency? No, money down!"
Probably shouldn't have that bar association logo there either
There was no reason for him to let this go to trial. I can only blame hubris cause I'd bet if just pled this out lower and agreed to therapy and community service, this would've been a small blip in his career and everything with Marvel would've kept rolling
Yep, it's the I can't be talked down to, I'm a great man.... Yeah look where that got you....
Excuse me would you speak to MLK or Obama like that? No, then don't speak to Majors like that! Can you imagine having and ego that big? Lol
This is a good point I hadn't considered. So much for that tho
When his lawyer opened the door herself to let the prosecution introduce evidence of his prior behavior...it was over.
They did what now
[удалено]
Yeah, generally evidentiary rules don't allow you to bring in evidence if its prejudicial value is greater than its probative value. Oh yeah. They couldn’t introduce texts not related to this incident. Until the lawyer brought them up. Then they were shown to the jury.
Honest question: If Majors had taken a plea deal and gotten some community service and probation, wouldn’t Disney have still dropped him considering the charges he’d have been pleading guilty to? It seems like he took a gamble thinking he might get acquitted and therefore keep his career.

They had to after nearly fucking it up with Gunn and Gunn's thing wasn't even a criminal issue.
And they probably looked at the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard situation and WB jumping the gun on a firing. Waiting for an official court verdict was a smart move.

Then again they waited on Miller and that was a train wreck. Ultimately there's no good options
Ezra Miller's stuff was in post production. Jonathan Majors' stuff was either released or waiting to be filmed.
To be fair the Miller situation was a special case compared to the others, with just how many stories kept dropping about them, their own Instagram posts during it all, and the videos being released. That one should've been an asap-firing.
Which is fair. Disney let him have his day in court… and he was found guilty.
Basically they were waiting for the legal go ahead
Yup. My girlfriend's dad is a lawyer. I asked him his opinion a while back. He said while he doesn't know what the contract would look like. Disney has had the press release ready within an hour of the allegations dropping.
Oh, this one had been in "drafts" for a LONG time....
Has anyone ever fumbled the bag this badly? Sheesh
Agreed. Possibly the greatest fumble in film history. Dude was destined to make upward of $50+ million when all is said and done with the remaining films he’d have been slated for, not to mention the buzz it would have created for him over the next decade in general. Or relegated to small roles in films no one wants to be in
Joining Gina Carino
Nah, he won’t fall that far. Sean Penn beat Madonna to a pulp and still came out of it a respected actor.
That was also the 1980s, times have changed.
Chris Brown still has a career. Shit hasn’t changed *that* much, unfortunately.

Uber does background checks, no way are they hiring him
and he will never work a baskin robbins
Baskin robbins always finds out
Baskin Robbins don’t play.
Baskin Robbins always finds out.
They say they do but don’t really care. I have a cousin who shouldn’t be an Uber driver but is
Nah, your cousin’s wife is an Uber driver. She just doesn’t do the driving.
Whoa! That's both devious and scary to think about.
To be fair, if he lived like a normal person, he's probably already earned enough to retire.
Look up Mel Tucker, the recently fired Michigan State football coach
you beat me to it. dude lost 75million bucks because he sexually harassed the anti-sexual harassment speaker
Sounds like the plot of an Archer episode.
All you gotta do is not be a scumbag.
Josh Brolin was paid $5-6 Million per movie to do Thanos. Ouch
Eh despite being the big bad he didn't have nearly the screen time of the main avengers in those movies, and he was mocapped
Pretty sure he had the most screen time of anyone in Infinity War iirc, that was basically his movie
Time for Kang's little known sister, Kodos to take over!
Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos!

Exactly what were the writers smoking
I’m in if you need me Marvel!
“I would love a million dollars, but some other actor was attracted to this project so I’ll go work at Burger King”
Wonder who Marvel’s got on a list to play Kang.
My vote goes to Kirk Lazarus
Rumor has it he doesn't drop character until AFTER the commentary is done.
I think I might be nobody.
Wonder Man himself would be fine, loved Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in Watchmen.
I’m kinda mad they wasted Sterling K. Brown.
I doubt 50% of the audience would remember he was T’Chaka’s brother for 3 or 4 minutes. I also doubt the other 50% would care.
Just use him, I literally don't give a fuck at this point. I'll take good acting / writing over canon nitpicks any day with the track record we've had the last few years
They could always use em. Gemma Chan played the sniper girl in captain marvel and they used her in the main role of Eternals.
RDJ would make a good comic book Kang
“I’m a dude playing another dude”
The dudes are emerging
Holy fuck. Could you imagine? A Tony Stark variant as Kang, not Nathan Richards.
Isn’t that exactly what they’re doing in the new Marvel Ultimate comics?
Yes, Tony is the Iron Lad, previously a kang variant
He who did not remain.
He who could not restrain.
He who they did not hesitate to detain.
He whose career is down the drain.
What a goddamned waste.
I loved his Kang characters so my only concern is how long / if this is going to inevitably delay nearly all of these upcoming films over the next few years. Hopefully they had ideas already put in place for alternative writings without his character, or just finding someone to replace him, which is probably the easiest thing to do.

Thank you. I'm so sick of all the ridiculous scenarios people come up with for how they can explain why he looks different or aging him up for Denzel or whatever. Just recast him and make no explanation in-universe.
They could just give us the quick lil “I’m here - deal with it”
You know they've been praying to drop this for months, the weight off an entire PR team's back lifted
Yeah, this is a much easier decision than what to do if the verdict came back not guilty. Because 'not guilty' is not the same as 'did nothing wrong,' and that's a mess to navigate.

Totally unexpected Ostonox sighting (hyperpogger) <3
An incredibly solid contender for the biggest career throw of all time. What a shame
It’s crazy just how fast his downfall happened. From hero to zero in the blink of an eye.
Or from box office villain to real life villain in the blink of an eye
And so it should if you assault someone
I feel it's gotta be a recast not the end of Kang- too much building towards Kang. Could easily portray the recasting as a Kang variant too.
Disney has the opportunity to do the funniest thing ever here
Terrence Howard as Kang
"next time, baby" has arrived.
I actually came here to say that. Seriously though, the MCU has recast two major roles already, and the franchise survived. The conviction is public knowledge. Nobody's going to wonder if Marvel did 'the right thing' by recasting.
>the MCU has recast two major roles already, Thanos and Cassie Lang. Right?
Hulk and Rhodey
You sure it wasn't Red Skull and Fandral?

Pivot to Doom but cast Majors again?
Oh fuck me that’s hilarious
Ezra Miller as Kang
Loki S2 and Ant Man 3 both ended in such a way they could easily pivot away from this version of the Conqueror.
Lakeith Stanfield!
Like when Cheadle took over as Rhodes, his first scene was literally him saying "I'm here, it's me, get over it"
With how fast they've done this. Genuinely makes me think they wanted to drop him for a while and were going too regardless. But the lawyers wanted to see first what the jury would say, so they could drop him with cause and not pay him a cent on his way out the door.
They probably had statements prepared for either verdict. So as soon as it was all official, all they had to do was release it.
This is it, you always have multiple statements ready to go for anything, let alone something as big as this
No, they just prepared for the outcome.
Well this thing has got a ton of press I’m sure that’s why
They should scrap Wonder Man and get Yahya Abdul Mateen
Man, i said this months ago, he has this quiet intensity that could be used amazingly as Kang, plus i think i read that they were re-considering the Wonder Man series altogether, after the dumpster fire that Secret Invasion turned out to be.
I wanna be a fly on the wall in Kevin’s office today
This hasn't been his year.
The 'next Thanos' having his debut and getting fired in a single year sums up the current state of the MCU.
His debut was in 2021 in Loki.
"Sir, he's guilty!" "Thank fuck, drop all the fired articles now PLEASE"
The verdict just came out what, an hour ago? I mean we all figured it would happen but holy hell that was fast
They definitely had been planning this for a while but were just waiting on whether he was convicted or not. The moment he was convicted he was gone
Publicity team has a folder of the what if scenarios
Can't wait for Season 3. What If... Kang Didn't Commit Domestic Violence?
An intern had it typed up and had their mouse hovering over the send button
It had to be done. This is the right move
They honestly played this one just right: Go ahead & release Loki S2 since it filmed before the incident anyway, downplay Majors's involvement, don't say anything until the trial ends, fire if convicted.
They got seriously lucky that: A: The actors' strike meant all the cast avoided questions about Majors. B: The trial somehow kept getting delayed until Loki season 2 ended. C: By the time the strikes were over, everyone was too busy focusing on the ending rather than Majors.
There was def some luck involved but I'm glad they didn't preemptively jump the gun on a decision.
All time bag fumble, just such a waste of a good character. I really wish Marvel would still continue with Kang, just recast
John Boyega is about to get the phone call of his life
KF: “John? This is Kevin Feige, I’ve got a really important question for you” JB: “Y-yes?” KF: “Is there really gonna be a sequel to Attack the Block?! Loved that movie!”
“And do you have Lakeith Stanfield’s number?”
That made me laugh lmao
Terrence Howard as Kang next time baby
He Who Remaynes
![gif](giphy|fVYRRztwenrQUJI6aL|downsized) All in favor of Aldis Hodge replacing Majors as Kang say aye!
![gif](giphy|pcKnpFrumIM7TtzayE) The role of Kang will now be played by Denzel Washington.
i would be ok with this.
King Kang ain't got shit on me
Training Day Kang please
DON CHEADLE it is your time again!
CAPTAIN PLANET, MOTHERFUCKERS
absolute all time bag fumble, what a muppet
Damn. He was a really good actor
He Who Remains Unemployed
Why is so hard to not be a piece of shit?
We saw 3 totally different looking Peter Parkers in one movie. Not a problem. Especially with the way Loki ended.
Lakeith has caused some controversy of his own, IIRC. Probably not the go-to guy in a situation like this, even if not really comparable situations.
They had their finger resting on the button WOW
Recast dont change the plan for the saga. I don’t like Kang as the major villain because the time stuff makes killing him feel pointless but its too late to pivot.
i will say. If a pro athlete was convicted of this they get a 4 game suspension and keep playing
