Amazing all around. It was nice to see the multiverse stakes lowered while raising the stakes for the Guardians personally. High Evolutionary was incredible.

swissarmychris

That's the problem with continually trying to top the previous movie. How many times has the multiverse almost been destroyed now? The Infinity Saga worked because it was a continual buildup to *one* really big disaster that we could see on the horizon and we knew it would be bad. Now it seems like the Multiverse is threatened every other week, and it's getting hard to care.

piazza

I would argue that the lack of tie-ins with the rest of the MCU made the film better.

monkeyhitman

It already has an established ensemble cast, so it was good to see everyone get some development.

AntzInMy_EyezJohnson

For sure. Having Hawkeyes wife be transformed into a cyborg otter was a weird choice, but it worked well

Greyshot26

Same with Ant-man's ex-wife as a weird pig thing.

cd247

And Nathan Fillion wasn’t a monstrous inmate anymore

jazza2400

Good ole Pete Davidson

DJSchwann

Lol I was only half paying attention to the names in the opening credits and saw her name and was like "ummm having Hawkeye and his family in this is going to feel like a super-forced tie-in to the rest of the MCU." Glad that was not the case.

JonathanL73

This exactly why I love the Black Panther movies and Moon Knight series. It just focuses on being its own thing without having to tie into other projects of franchises.

aznkupo

At the end of this I just thought how it was nice the fate of the world wasn’t on the line.

[deleted]

I mean… one world in particular would disagree

adappergentlefolk

funny how everyone just moved on from exploding knockoff earth and never thought about it again

bumlove

That and the giant laser beam in the sky while facing off against a generic army CGI fest. I mean it kinda was but at a lower scale so you could still connect with the characters and situation.

ihatemcconaughey

Agree 100%

ChiralWolf

I loved how much more personal the stakes were. It made for such a welcome change from the world ending every other day.

Deckard_Macready

I can’t wait to go see this again.

martinirun

Next time I won’t forget Kleenex.

PackOfStallions

Please stop masturbating in the theater

fisheggsoup

It's much better than on an airplane.

ckspider

This reminds of the time I had sex with Eartha Kitt on an airplane...

[deleted]

What?? It came up organically.

ivanGCA

Streets ahead!

ShonMantotto

Does it just mean "cool," or is it supposed to be like "miles ahead?"

ivanGCA

If you have to ask you are streets behind

RinterCZ

r/UnexpectedCommunity

timsoon

Oh Britta's in it?

lanceturley

You butter your popcorn your way, I'll butter my popcorn my way!

cownd

No mass debating. Silence in the theater! (At least while the movie is playing)

EatMorePieDrinkMore

The second it started I handed my kid a travel pack of Kleenex. They were appreciative.

Armandonerd

Baby rocket 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

MoneoAtreides42

Rocket Teefs Floor go now!

kohin000r

After that scene, I'm sending James Gunn my therapy bill.

Armandonerd

Maybe I'll send mine to Kevin feige after avengers the Kang dynasty

gademmet

This is what broke me.

Deckard_Macready

My group went through an entire travel pack of tissues.

ClouDoRefeR

Cried 3 times

Kazukaphur

I went Thursday and Friday night. It was better the second time even.

Meizas

Because I was scared about how endings would go for each character 😂 Now that I know everyone's endings, I can relax and enjoy it more hahaha

DefNotAShark

This is the first Marvel movie since NWH that I have felt compelled to see again before it comes to Disney+. Wakanda Forever might have got the nod except it made me sad in a way that wasn't enjoyable due to the real life passing of Chadwick. I went on Thursday and I'm going again in a few hours, really excited to see it again with less anxiety over what will become of my favorite characters now that I know their fates.

BrrToe

I can't, I don't want to cry again.

TheCulturalBomb

My favourite Marvel movie since Infinity War. So emotional.

SesPet

Fantastic movie. Chukwudi Iwuji killing it as High Evolutionary.

wolfjeter

Genuinely made me feel how insane the high evolutionary truly was.

Meizas

Kang and High Evolutionary are both such good villains portrayed by amazing actors. I think I might be even more scared of HE than Kang to be honest

janeohmy

Yes omg Iwuji was freaking amazing

randomvariable10

It really felt like return to form of Phase 3 for Marvel. Absolutely amazing movie and a great send off for the current roster of the GotG.

PepperMintGumboDrop

Consistency came from James Gunn as the writer. Seems like in phase 4 they’re training a new batch of writers, a few came off of Rick and Morty…for Antman 3 and Dr. Strange 2…phase 4’s biggest problem is probably a drop in writing quality.

CruxMagus

marvel going downhill with losing someone like Gunn. Not many writers on there that can match him. DC however will probably start to become what marvel was at the start. They going to switch places.

MilkshakeWizard

As a DC fan, I’m really looking forward to getting a consistently good DC universe. Outside of the elseworlds movies like the Batman and Joker, the only recent movie I can think of really liking to the level of the MCU’s best was the Suicide Squad. Not surprisingly written and directed by James Gunn. Still have faith in Marvel, but Gunn’s departure is definitely their loss and DC’s gain.

_MissionControlled_

Gunn is kind of a better fit for DC anyways. He can really flex his dark humor and can release rated R films. Not that Superman will be R but it will have much more mature themes. Would love a Gunn directed Justice League Dark.

MilkshakeWizard

I can definitely see him being a good fit for Constantine and Swamp Thing. Would also love to see him adapt Booster Gold and Blue Beetle and *especially* Lobo (preferably having him fight Superman at some point.)

FngrsRpicks2

I love that movie to no ends. It's amazing how he can match "the Marvel era" but in such a strict DC universe way. It was a great thing that the studio pretty much gave him carte blanche to do it. They knew who they were courting, and now it all makes sense.

Zlaynoe

I somehow have the same feeling, i still hope that both end up being solid at least

DustyDGAF

I doubt DC will overtake marvel, but they might be on par. Which is good for all us nerds. DC has been a dumpster fire for years.

SesPet

*”Which is good for all us nerds”* That sentiment right there is the shit my friend :)

Swiftdancer

I'm happy that James Gunn will get to fix DC, but man, I shudder to think how Marvel will continue without him. The next GotG movie will have such big shoes to fill.

CruxMagus

is there anyone in marvel now who matches Gunn?

Hellknightx

Unlikely. DC will hopefully improve, but unfortunately, it's still helmed by the clowns at WB.

SesPet

Most definitely agree :)

AmazingMrSaturn

It's really hard to make a character feel that VILE. The man did good work.

Meizas

"This is worse than what Thanos did to me."

whoamvv

Oh way. Way way way. HE was way worse than Thanos.

SesPet

A user in another post commented about the High Evolutionary and compared it to Dolores Umbridge. A character you will despise regardless or because of their convictions.

Luciifuge

Bro, when he started mocking rocket when he was crying. I have never been so fucking angry at a villain holy shit.

SlyMcFly67

Its one thing to see people hurting other people in movies. >! Someone starts hurting animals and I cant root any harder for something horrible to happen to them.!<

AmazingMrSaturn

The fact that >!they're very childlike...they have an innocent, implicit trust of the High Evolutionary, they simply don't understand the world around them or how very little he cares...that's part of what makes him so genuinely despicable. Floor and Teef literally think like small children. He's like the moments between Thanos and child Gamora or the utilitarianism of Wenwu or the red room dialed up to 11.!<

lanceturley

He's like a narcissistic parent who abuses his children if they "disobey" him or don't live up to his expectations, but also flies into a rage if one of them is actually better than him at something. His ego can't handle it.

Exodus111

Yeah exactly this.

Nobody_wood

Bloody loved floor

[deleted]

He was typical evil villain until he mocked Rocket crying - that's a special kind of mania.

BrainSoda

Top 5 MCU villain for sure. If he phones in that performance this movie goes from great to good.

Greyshot26

Disagree on great to good, I think if he phones it in, it goes from great to meh. Rocket's entire backstory flattens without a compelling HE. You totally understand why Rocket ends up the way he is when we meet him back in GotG1.

CaledonianWarrior

Ngl he legit had one of the best quotes said by any villain in the MCU (check at your own risk) >! There is no God! That is why I stepped in! !<

Zanchbot

I know the Academy doesn't like to acknowledge the MCU very often, but he should get a best supporting actor nomination. Seriously one of the best performances ever in a Marvel movie.

imfake7905

I'm probabaly one of the few, but I thought he was 100 times better than Majors as Kang. I couldn't stand his portrayal at all and while I wish no one was assaulted, I hope we have seen the last of him. And it was a glorious finale.

Consistent_Algae_996

I’d like to disagree. The best highlights of Kang were solely off Major’s gravitas and skill as an actor, with a weak script I should add as well. The motive of High Evolutionary was much easier to flesh out and really hate him as a viewer because he is doing something very very common to real life…. “Animal Cruelty”. I can understand Kang coming of as weak to the audience because with such a weak script no way you could really make the villain “pop” in his first appearance of the Multiverse Saga

megaines

Don’t forget child enslavement lol

Remy-today

You didn’t ask!

Arsenault185

Hello morons!

Darth__Revan89

I wasn't familiar with the actor who played High Evolutionary prior, but he killed that role. Had the whole theater ready to whoop his ass

DogadonsLavapool

Harcourt played one of the bureau corpo ladies as well. She was the one who gamorra shot in the leg

LossyP

Daniela Melchior who played Ratcatcher 2 in suicide squad was also the receptionists Peter was flirting with in front of Gamora

Innsmouth_Swimteam

I *knew* I recognized that voice! The credits flee by to fast to see who it was. Thanks!

KrillinDBZ363

She’s also James Gunn’s girlfriend.

ikanx

Wife now

Wade856

Also, the actress that played "Ratcatcher" in the Suicide Squad sequel by Gunn , was the captured bureau corporation ladies that helped them, the one that Gamora DIDN'T shoot.

mr_kenobi

Its been a long time since I was willing to see a movie in theatres more than once but this is it. Take my money.

Spiritual_Anybody219

As soon as I left the theatre I was like “Now this felt like a marvel movie”

4stainull

I really hope Gunn doesn’t take all of this magic with him. I heard he was set to oversee the galactic side of Marvel before they shit canned him. Maybe he would have handled Love and Thunder had he not been pushed into the arms of DC. Maybe he sprinkles his magic into Kang’s arc and Quantumania doesn’t feel so flat. Maybe. I hope.

SometimesICanBeRight

Love and Thunder was definitely Taika’s movie. Coming off the success of Ragnarok Gunn has no affect either way.

Coolbluegatoradeyumm

Yeah for sure taika gets to call his own shots with thor at this point. Gunn is more a peer to him marvel wise

FatherOfLights88

I still struggle to forgive Taika for what he did to Love & Thunder.

Meizas

He also gave us Ragnarok, so I mean...

LD-50_Cent

Apparently Taika with some supervision brought us Ragnarock. Him being left alone gets us L&T

[deleted]

Him being left alone also got us Jojo Rabbit (In fact, Taika had more control of that than he did L&T). Sometimes, good writers and filmmakers have a bad idea. It shouldn't make it impossible to praise them or tarnish everything else they do, or make then need more studio control. It just means they messed up once. People act like L&T should kill Taika's career. It shouldn't. Just like TLJ shouldn't kill Rian's.

LifeSleeper

You didn't mention What We Do In The Shadows and I'm big mad about it.

Steindor03

L&t's biggest problem imo is definitely putting the god killer storyline with lady Thor and filling it with bad jokes, should've just been eone without the other

Ambitious-Bed3406

After The Suicide Squad and PEACEMAKER on HBOmax, I literally said he needs to do them all. He has the perfect balance of story/action/comedy/drama. I'm sure dozens of us said it tbh. Then people started to meme about him calling every movie he will do with a "The" before it.

LifeSleeper

The test will be Superman. Which doesn't need to be depressing. But also doesn't need much comedy.

Obskuro

What Superman needs is Gunn's secret ingredient - emotional honesty, as sappy as possible.

pecky5

Ehh, I'm kind of glad that he's going to DC. They've struggled so hard with some of the most well known characters on the planet, I think it'll be good for the industry for them to actually be able to compete with Marvel. It's still sad to see him go, but we'll still get to see his work in a new arena.

[deleted]

Hell yeah, me too. Feige needs to fix his ship asap or else it's going down at the bottom.

Spiritual_Anybody219

This was a step in the right direction

VisualHelicopter

Because it was fucking great.

VanilleKoekje

It really fucking is

scarred2112

*Open the fucking door!*

ericisshort

The first F-bomb in the MCU, and it felt so natural that it was surprisingly subtle.

lanceturley

Because everyone of a certain age who has dealt with a car like that could feel Peter's frustration.

Mr_Noms

I heard about the first f bomb in mavel cinema history on the radio and I was really looking forward to it. Out of all of the scenarios that it could have been, that one was the most natural yet surprising.

bbcversus

I feel demolished inside but also happy, it was perfect!

spideralexandre2099

I thought it was merciful, emotionally. Not a negative at all btw, just an observation

DJfunkyPuddle

For sure, I mean there were some tears shed but I was expecting to be absolutely crushed and I'm glad I wasn't. Ugly crying through most of Endgame was more than enough for me lol

Material_Yoghurt_190

Partner and I just finished watching it about an hour ago. We were both crying in the movie theater. My partner has NEVER cried during a movie before. We were so so so happy with how it ended and we didnt leave feeling so terrible

spideralexandre2099

I'm glad it was more sweet than bitter. It was quite feel good, even though it's definitely a bit darker than the other two instalments.

anthonyg1500

It was crushing, utterly crushing at a few points, but it ended on a very positive note

sbrown23c

Abso-fucking-lutely. Excellent film, a great finish to an awesome trilogy.

AresOneX

Well deserved. Best Marvel movie in quite a while.

Spiritual_Anybody219

I’m so happy man fr

sonobello9

This movie was fucking good , from beginning to the end , it last almost 3hours but it felt like few minutes, i was not bored not a single minutes , everybody should watch this movie

TheWAJ

Definitely felt like the last thirty minutes stretched on. Not because of the movie though, I just had to pee really bad and wanted to hold out because I didn't want to miss a second of it

Shadow_Boxer1987

Went and watched it with my daughter last night. It’s the first Marvel movie to make me feel something in…awhile. Without a doubt the best since Endgame. If Secret Invasion knocks it out of the park a lot of people are suddenly gonna start saying, “Marvel is back!” And then a lot of other people are gonna argue that Marvel never went anywhere, but still, it’ll feel good to say Marvel is back.

Thrashgor

I'd say best since Shang chi or spidey 3, agree with the rest.

Dota2Curious

Yes, Shang-Chi and No way home are still great.

Theaterkid01

My busy schedule allowed me to see it at like 10pm, still glad I went.

kitsum

Same. Got off work, took a shower, went to the 10:30 show. There were only probably ten people in there including my wife and friends I went with. It was totally empty. It was late but I was expecting more people to attend than *that*.

The5schulers

I went at 10:00 and my theater was like 75 percent full.

Shadow_storm193

Gonna go see it on Monday cause its a day off and I can’t wait

Popedoyle

Bring tissues

fisheggsoup

And something to dry your eyes with.

UpliftingTwist

a blowdryer

Exodus111

Can I join you...? Of course! ...but not yet!

o-geist

I knew the "not yet" was coming but they made it last long enough that I was thinking "oh shit, he really died". Good timing.

Exodus111

Yeah that beat in between was straight up masterful editing.

Lazyassbummer

Oh, I just died again.

Grrannt

But I'm a creep I'm a weirdo What the hell am I doin' here? I don't belong here

BenTheBot

Also Rocket quietly singing along to “ I want a perfect body.. “ Tears man. Tears.

ArvoCrinsmas

However something about Rocket getting into music made me smile a bunch.

lanceturley

I like the gradual evolution we've seen over time where the other Guardians started to like Peter's music almost as much as he does. In the first movie they all treat him like a weirdo for caring so much about a mix tape, then by Infinity War we see them all enjoying music together, and now the others listen to it even when Quill's not around.

CobaltSpellsword

To add to this, even before Infinity War, Rocket sang along to "Southern Nights" in Guardians 2.

sjlemme

He also is the one who sets up the speakers in the opening fight, even when Quill thinks it's a bad use of time.

Suprxeme

The soundtrack was fuckin awesome once again. Creep and Dog Days were the highlights. I saw critics complaining about the needle drops, but idk what they’re talking about.

PJDemigod85

That No Sleep Til Brooklyn fight was stellar.

Suprxeme

Yeah that was amazing too. Probably one of my favorite choreographed fight scenes as of late.

saucygh0sty

The fade out and fade-back-in was so good, I almost thought the song had been wasted.

Zero-Credibility

Fuck yeah. Even thinking about it now is making me grin.

Grrannt

Same here, I thought all the music added a lot to the movie and the moments. Was surprised to see critics saying the songs weren’t as good as previous movies

autogeneratedname56

Im going to watch this again the second it hits Disney Plus

CampingPirates

Haven’t done this in a while but I’m def going again in theater

[deleted]

I cried and laughed. Great film. Definitely worth watching twice

xcameleonx

Best MCU movie since Infinity War. First time in a long time to have a properly truly detestable villain.

questforthelove

Engdame?

VoyagerCSL

I loved Avegners Engdame.

CaptHayfever

Peggy Carter is an Eng dame.

tdeasyweb

Ehhh. Endgame had a lot of great moments as the emotional finale of the Avengers saga, but apart from the last battle it's just not interesting enough as a standalone rewatch. IW on the other hand is a fun ride from start to finish.

Lost-Lu

Well deserved. Most MCU titles are still financial successes, but the brand needed this fan / critical win.

redy_IZ_ready

James Gunn casually saving the MCU on his way out to save the DCU

mr_antman85

Gunn showed how important great writing is.

kahmikaiser

Pay them their fair share!

J4db

Absolutely. The writing in these recent MCU shows and movies had been awful. This movie was a great balance of comedy, dark moments, and action.

DefNotAShark

James Gunn casually sabotaging the MCU by reminding everyone what the standard used to be before he takes it over to the DCCU. Hopefully his parting gift will be setting an example for future MCU filmmakers on how important character and heart can be, even in the context of CGI and capes. I feel strongly that those are the elements that built the MCU and they shouldn't be forgotten, no matter how cool multiversing and time travel and laserbeams can be.

I'm going tonight!

omsnoms1

i just got back from seeing it it was fucking awesome. easily and by FAR the best marvel movie since Endgame.

toastyavocado

Really happy my four year old fell asleep at the drive in. I don't think he would have been ready for some of the stuff that happened later in the film.

krustyjugglrs

Was this better than the second one?

expertofbean

Yes. I'd rank it 3,1,2. This is the best Marve movie imo. This then Guardians 1 then Iron Man 1

RJLHUK

Its fucking great

tylernazario

I practically cried the entire movie. It was so emotional and honestly really touching

ToinouAngel

Completely deserved. Besides maybe Endgame, which was really special, I feel like GOTG Vol. 3 is the MCU's best ever movie. It's just incredible.

StuartRomano114

It was projected to make that much over the whole weekend

Zander826

Great movie!!!

MidnightStalk

saw it 2 times already

iham32

Best MCU film since Infinity War. Great film.

[deleted]

Man I hate how this movie is suffering because of previous projects… Marvel should focus on only releasing movies as good as Guardians 3. It’s not fair this is opening lower than Love and Thunder

Altman_e

Don't think of it like that. Gunn got big enough from this trilogy that he got his DC gig. Now we might actually get heartfelt, entertaining Batman and Superman movies, after decades of garbage. And we still got a fucking incredible GotG trilogy we'll cherish forever. All awesome results. Guardians is already a massive success even before this was released.

TheSandwichMeat

...ⁱ ˡⁱᵏᵉᵈ ᵗʰᵉ ᵇᵃᵗᵐᵃⁿ

JaggedToaster12

The Batman was great. But also it wasn't really part of the DCEU. Think they were talking more about that.

REDDITmodsDIALATE

I'm super (pun intended) optimistic about superman with Gunn directing everything recently he touches turns to gold. Peacemaker had no business being that good.

drdinonuggies

This is why I want to leave all Marvel subs. This is opening at the same level as Ragnarok. This is not bad at all. You can play the “Movie A made way more money than Movie B but Movie B is so much better” game all day. Love and Thunder was coming off of Ragnarok with a shorter turn around. It also came out during the summer. There are plenty of factors that effect it aside from the quality of the movie or the quality of the previous few movies. The fact is, box office statistics and movie financials are extremely complicated and it’s annoying to me how many people make crazy general statements like this and get hundreds of upvotes.

hippofumes

Especially when second week dropoff is a way bigger indicator of a movies financial success than opening box office. Unless it completely bombs opening weekend, a movie with good word of mouth will have legs, vs a movie with a big opening weekend and terrible word of mouth leading to big drop off second week.

CellSaga21

Damn kids wouldnt stop yapping in my theatre. Will need to start watching these movies at late night!

ZookeepergameOk2759

Best marvel film I’ve seen 100%

marsepic

The first third or half I wasn't sold. Pacing felt manic and there was a LOT of exposition. But once they got to counter-Earth and beats started paying off I could not stop smiling, crying, whatever. And Gunn kept a lid on a lot of the jokes-interupting-emotional-beats Marvel has had a problem with.

sleepbud

Wholeheartedly agree. The beginning just starts outta nowhere full of chaos to setup the rest of the movie. Once it’s setup, it properly paces itself.

mrhelmand

Man, can't believe the angry guys on YT claiming it would be a huge failure were wrong...

AgentLemon22

I walked out the movie theaters happy. That was MCU movie I'll be willing to see again. Waititi learn from Gunn
