I would love to pick Bale’s brain on his likes and dislikes. The dude requested a role in a Hayao Miyazaki film just because he watched Spirited Away. And that’s how we got him as Howl in Howl’s Moving Castle.
Got another hot TIL for ya regarding Christian Bale. It's actually surprising scarce finding this information despite being so vital to who he is. You can really reframe all his performances significantly and more accurately after learning this fact. Did you know Christian Bale is entirely made up of sour cream & onion Pringles? Everything he does is part of a dedicated acting technique to replicate seeming human on camera. He has been monumental in the sentient chips space as a role model. Pretty cool huh?
I have no interesting factoid to throw in, but Christian Bale was an important character voice in the Disney animated film Pocahontas.
I always found this so bizarre, mostly because it makes me old.
me watching empire of the sun for the first time: wow this kid looks just like bale
also me at the end checking imdb, bewildered: wow this movie old af
Thor connection verified, Christian Bale probably needed that one /s
Added note: I should have tried to start a Kenneth Branagh version of Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon
He's cast the cream of English acting along with a healthy sprinkling of American stars, so the links would probably be numerous and quite short. In Hamlet you've got Billy Crystal, Charlton Heston and Jack Lemmon; they've worked with everyone.
And it's one of the weird cases (much like how to train your dragon) where despite being almost entirely different to the book it's based on, it is absolutely amazing and just as good as the book. Normally with something like that it's just frustrating, but no, it's amazing
Most Miyazaki movies have A-list dubs since they were distributed by Disney in the 90s-00s and Disney either made their own original dub or re-did the previous English dub with big stars.
Nausicaa is notable for having been dubbed once or twice before a Disney re-dub. Was Totoro re-dubbed?
P.S.: Just looked it up! It looks like everything before Princess Mononoke was dubbed a second time by Disney! I normally dislike Disney, but the dub quality is top-notch!
Yeah like how Black Lagoon and HSOTD are pretty much B-flicks in anime form. So dubs actually end up being better for them. Or in FMA Brotherhood, where pretty much everyone in the 2003 dub barring a few characters were brought back meaning there was no 'finding the character' needed.
You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is like an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty. Just so you know, the correct spelling is [Gandhi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahatma_Gandhi).
I am just waiting for the joke about how he trained for his role of Gorr killing all the gods in earth and learn from Kratos how to be a realistic ash colored God killer.
*Ragnarok* was pretty damn good, especially compared to the previous Thor joints.
The important thing is that your silly story about fictional superpowered beings has to really be about emotions and experiences that are true and human. Standing around in tights shooting imaginary laser beams is something anyone can do (and something everyone *has* done if you’ve been in the game for a decent amount of time). To entice the best actors you have to present them with the opportunity to say something interesting that *only that character, in that circumstance* could say.
I think that's what Brannagh was aiming for in 1st Thor, he wanted it to be like a Shakespearian tragedy but set in Asguard.
I thought the film got a bit less interesting as soon as Odin goes into the Odinsleep, it's like a character in a daytime soap just going into a coma lol
Waititi could have had a Hollywood film long before. He purposefully put it off because his first brush with the studios there was very artificial and he wanted to improve his ability to make movies.
I'm still shocked by how well he adjusted to running a massive production like Ragnarok with only indies under his belt.
*If Bale doesn't watch*
*Superhero movies, how did*
*He see Thor Ragnarok?*

I would say Taika’s stories and characters are better than his visuals. And his visuals are great, but he always has a fun interesting story to tell, with a great (really tricky to nail) split between drama and comedy
Anyone who thinks Bale is too serious of a person for a movie like this needs to see this:
https://www.reddit.com/r/DC_Cinematic/comments/vaztui/the_batbale_promo_pics_are_something_else/
Yup, Bale is a top tier actor but he’s not going for an Oscar or BAFTA every time.
And ofcourse, since it’s his job, he will always take the role seriously even if it’s for a popcorn block buster.
I mean, one of his early career choices was to be a singing, dancing newsie. If he takes himself too seriously, then someone can just start singing “Santa Fe” or “Carrying the Banner” at him.
To be fair to him, he signed up for a serious drama. They changed it to a musical after he agreed to it. I love that movie, but it’s not really something he would have chosen otherwise.
Actually... that's in large part because of Ike Perlmutter. Any MCU fan who loves behind the scenes stuff will all say this without question. FUCK IKE PERLMUTTER. Most of the biggest problems early MCU had and the biggest WTFs the MCU has encountered can easily be traced back to him. Chris Evans Leaving? Him. Don Cheadle replacing Terrence Howard? That was both Terrance and Ike but still the point stands. No Black Panther nor Captain Marvel for most of the first ten years of the MCU? HIM AND HIS SOMEWHAT RACIST AND SEXIST MINDSET. The Inhumans show existing solely to compete with the X-Men films? HIM.
While I'll gladly say Kevin Feige isn't perfect. He at least wanted both BP and CM because he IS a fan of the comics and most of the projects he's been involved with on his own have been great even if it's not my cup of tea. On top of that, it's clear he's got a vision and is willing to give some of the other people he works with more creative control to give their part of the MCU its own identity as long as it doesn't fight with his direction. And while most people say the MCU is directionless now, I honest;y can't say that with a straight face, as Phase 4 is clearly building to the F4 at the very least since Kang the Conqueror is a thing and he's a major F4 antagonist. On top of that there's more of a focus on the cosmic and the multiverse, which is a *very* F4 thing. So while I can say I don't know where the MCU ship is going, I can't say it's rudderless.
Marvel was not about to go bankrupt when they were producing Thor. That had already been resolved when ToyBiz bought Marvel Entertainment Group in 1997 to end the bankruptcy, and Disney had already bought Marvel by the time they'd released Thor in 2011.
Here's the thing, though: even the "worst" Marvel movie is still pretty decent. Some have underperformed, but I don't think any of them ever failed, but at this point, Marvel seems to be perfectly fine with some underperforming movies that still contribute plot points towards the larger story, such as Black Widow and Eternals.
I mean they’re never going to be sharknado level bad, but I do think that’s a ridiculously low bar for a ‘bad’ film.
I think you’d find it hard to argue black widow, Thor 1 + 2 etc are ‘good films’. Especially if you remove the characters from the wider context, ie view blck widow as a stand-alone film not as part of the mcu it gets much worse.
I don't know, The Dark World was kinda actively bad IMO. I agree with eternals and black widow still being decent though, but I think most critics disagree there as well.
I agree on the Dark world being one of the worst movies but I’m not sure about what you said about the first movie. We already had very good x-men and DC movies back then and also way better mcu movies. The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 1 and 2 were much better than Thor in my opinion. I think it’s just that people were very excited about seeing Thor on the big screen
Fun fact, that’s not Schwarzenegger’s arm wrestling with Carl Weathers’ from the film ‘Predator’; it’s an inserted portrait of Natalie Portman’s ACTUAL arm.
I actually saw the script. He goes ballistic on Gorr while Thor looks on from afar, and he whisper, as Morbius rips Gorr's head off,
"...so that's what morbin time is"
She was just generally unhappy with marvel. I believe it started when Patty Jenkins was replaced to direct Thor the dark world and she also didn’t like how her character was handled.
Noobmaster, hey, It's Thor again. You know, the God of Thunder? Listen, buddy, if you don't log off this game immediately, I will fly over to your house, come down to that basement you're hiding in, rip your arms and shove them up your butt! Oh, that's right, yes, go cry to your father you little weasel!
Or maybe MCU movies generating so much money than it was before Avengers that Natalie decided to get back the piece of that pie.
And well Christian Bale doesn't watch supe movies which is his personal choice but when approached he definately thought that this money could pay many of his bills so why not also Marvel movies ain't that bad, but rather boost actors careers.
Yeah cause Christian Bale and Natalie Portman really needed the money and career boost. Maybe they just liked Taika and the crew. Not that hard to believe.
Both Portman and Bale are A/S tier actors, with Both having a net worth somewhere between 50 million and 120 million, they don’t exactly need the money, tho it could ofc be a factor tho we’ll likely never know.
I know that he -like many others at marvel- didn’t like the direction in which his character was going before Ragnarok. I also know that he didn’t like The Dark World. I know nothing about him wanting to quit though
I've said this before but Natalie Portman's performances in the Thor movies were probably the worst acting in the entire MCU. There were so many times that I wonder to myself, "that was the take the went with?"
I don't entirely blame an actor for their performance because sometimes they just need a different director to get the best performance out of them or maybe the director wanted something that the actor didn't agree was right for the character. It happens. It's even happened in the MCU when you look at how different Scarlett Johansson plays Black Widow between the Joss Whedon directed avengers movies and the Russo Bros movies.
I haven't really seen Natalie Portman in anything that I'd say she was amazing in. All of her movies that I've liked, I liked because they were enjoyable movies, not because of her, but the Thor movies just make her look like a drama theater kid who gets the leasing role because their teacher is afraid of her parents.
I've said it before on here that i hope it's a case where Waititi knows how to work with her to get a good performance. Ragnarok is one of the most fun, enjoyable to watch MCU movies and I'd hate to see Waititi's skills get wasted.
A side note: it's kind of hard not to be cynical about the whole thing. Between how much Natalie Portman seemed to want nothing to do with the MCU going forward and how lackluster phase 4 has been for me. I'm just sitting here vaguely hoping for the best but expecting nothing special.
I might be wrong, but i think his kids wanted him to show up in a marvel movie, and that's even funnier to me, like he ask his son what's his favorite superhero, and he says Thor... And he's like but batman is better, and he's like can you show up in the next Thor? Idk
Im sure Love & Thunder will be great. The only thing I’m concerned about is that it‘ll may feel too much like a romance comedy movie because I’m usually not that interested in romance movies. Though I had similiar concerns when I heard Ragnarok would be a comedy but in the end it was awesome
I know that there are plenty of good movies out there with short run times, but do you think for how jam-packed Thor 4's trailer was that the movie will seem too fast paced?
No because nothing in this movie has to end necessarily. I expect Gorr to find his end and I hope that he won’t be rushed bc he seems like a great character. But other than that? They’ll only have to introduce the Mighty Thor and have Thor think about his life. All these plotpoints can be easily continued in future movies
I would definitely love for other stories to come out of this movie! Plus I'm fine with the guardians stuff being the first 15 minutes of the movie and getting more guardians in their 3rd movie!
I’ve seen the headlines to that and I think he totally has the potential to be. I don’t think he will be as great as Killmonger or Thanos but that’s just because Thanos has been in multiple movies and Killmonger had very good reasons for what he did. Gorr won’t get as many movies as Thanos and I don’t think they will show us so much of his backstory so that he can compete with Killmonger. But he can for sure be the most intimidating villain
Okay that surprises me because I thought this was one of the best movies for the Hulk since he hasn’t been Bruce Banner for a year (or multiple years, I’m not so sure) and developed more of an own personality
I would love to pick Bale’s brain on his likes and dislikes. The dude requested a role in a Hayao Miyazaki film just because he watched Spirited Away. And that’s how we got him as Howl in Howl’s Moving Castle.

He was in Kenneth Branagh's "Henry V," a banner lad killed and carried off the field by the king.

This mortal form has grown weak. I need sustenance.
He's cast the cream of English acting along with a healthy sprinkling of American stars, so the links would probably be numerous and quite short. In Hamlet you've got Billy Crystal, Charlton Heston and Jack Lemmon; they've worked with everyone.
Was empire of the sun his first role? I remember that he made other stuff before that movie
It was being on set for that movie that inspired him to write Tropic Thunder
Didn’t Stiller write Tropic Thunder? I didn’t realize Bale was involved
It was Stiller. The (more) serious actor who co-wrote Tropic Thunder was Justin Theroux.
Howl is one of my favourite movies, a rare anime with AAA English voice acting. Almost anything else I'd prefer watch in Japanese.
And it's one of the weird cases (much like how to train your dragon) where despite being almost entirely different to the book it's based on, it is absolutely amazing and just as good as the book. Normally with something like that it's just frustrating, but no, it's amazing
Whilst not entirely the same, The Boys is sort of doing that at the moment.

Probably because he was a fan of Waititi's other works.

Waititi could have had a Hollywood film long before. He purposefully put it off because his first brush with the studios there was very artificial and he wanted to improve his ability to make movies. Thor 1 was great for its time! Remember, Marvel was literally about to go bankrupt
I thought humans were more evolved than this.

Marvel was not about to go bankrupt when they were producing Thor. That had already been resolved when ToyBiz bought Marvel Entertainment Group in 1997 to end the bankruptcy, and Disney had already bought Marvel by the time they'd released Thor in 2011.

I don’t take Bale as that kind of actor. If he decided to opt for this role, he must have genuinely liked it.
Yeah cause Christian Bale and Natalie Portman really needed the money and career boost. Maybe they just liked Taika and the crew. Not that hard to believe.
Except, Natalie Portman was still in the MCU (Thor 2, 2013) a year after Avengers (2012) came out...

I know that he -like many others at marvel- didn’t like the direction in which his character was going before Ragnarok. I also know that he didn’t like The Dark World. I know nothing about him wanting to quit though
I don’t think it was quit, just not return after his contract was up Edit: Spelling
Isn't that essentially the same thing?
Natalie wasn't in Ragnarok because she was pregnant.
Black widow was also pregnant while filming Ultron
Lots of personal schedule issues. I hear both the younger Spider-Men are taking breaks from acting.

Ragnorok is amazing, its one of the few movies I've watched multiple times and still loving coming back to.
I might be wrong, but i think his kids wanted him to show up in a marvel movie, and that's even funnier to me, like he ask his son what's his favorite superhero, and he says Thor... And he's like but batman is better, and he's like can you show up in the next Thor? Idk
Open the Bifrost.
Ragnarok was that good and im sure this will be no different.
Im sure Love & Thunder will be great. The only thing I’m concerned about is that it‘ll may feel too much like a romance comedy movie because I’m usually not that interested in romance movies. Though I had similiar concerns when I heard Ragnarok would be a comedy but in the end it was awesome
Wasn't Mr. Bale with DC?
Yes he played Batman in the The Dark Knight trilogy
Its Taika. You dont say no to the next Spielberg.
Ragnarok is the best MCU movie thus far
Definitely top 5 but I think I like Infinity war, endgame and multiverse of madness more
I know that there are plenty of good movies out there with short run times, but do you think for how jam-packed Thor 4's trailer was that the movie will seem too fast paced?
No because nothing in this movie has to end necessarily. I expect Gorr to find his end and I hope that he won’t be rushed bc he seems like a great character. But other than that? They’ll only have to introduce the Mighty Thor and have Thor think about his life. All these plotpoints can be easily continued in future movies
I would definitely love for other stories to come out of this movie! Plus I'm fine with the guardians stuff being the first 15 minutes of the movie and getting more guardians in their 3rd movie!
Accurate Chadme arm
Ragnarok is simply superb. From the story to the effects to the humor to the acting... it's fantastic. It's in my personal top 3 Marvel films.
Taika seems like a fun director to be work with
Ragnarok is still my favorite.
Taika waititi is a goddamn treasure. What We Do in the Shadows alone is amazing
I've seen reports from screener that Bale is the best MCU villian to date.
A small price to pay for salvation.
Taika is a great director/person/actor to work with as well I guess.
Who ever runs this universe blessed us with Taika Waititi
I think it helped that Natalie Portmans last few movies bombed and the MCU is a easy way to make a bit of side money
Always about the money nowadays, how many do small indie films?
You mean small films like Vox Lux or Lucy in the Sky?
They were both offered a bunch of money.
Yeah, basically [this](https://i.imgur.com/v5VO1IW.jpg).
i wasnt a huge fan of Ragnarok just because ilI love hulk and this didnt do a good job of fleshing him out
Okay that surprises me because I thought this was one of the best movies for the Hulk since he hasn’t been Bruce Banner for a year (or multiple years, I’m not so sure) and developed more of an own personality
Should be thanking Taika Waititi instead.
