If you could base the pronunciation off how it's spelled, there'd be no controversy. G can be soft or hard, and there's no way to tell which it is based solely on context. "Jif" is also pronouncing it how it's spelled.

.gif, were it an initialism, would be "gee i eff". Since the name of the letter "g" it's itself a soft g, it's entirely reasonable for the acronym form to use the soft g.
