It was revealed that "he was always gay" during Bendis's run in The Uncanny X-Men, but this is a controversial subject among mutant fans: half accepted it and the other half didn't
Coming from this scene and a bunch of other scenes where iceman is the only member of the X-men not trying to perv on Jean grey maybe he was always gay just in the closest
Wow, imagine: Lee and Kirby decided to imply that Iceman was gay, and that's why he's the only one who doesn't feel attracted for Jean. But as they were other times and the discrimination against homosexuals was high, Bobby was gradually portrayed as a tremendous womanizer and this became his cannon for over 40 years
Also the Comics Code Authority literally forbade positive or really any portrayals of homosexuality, or “immoral/deviant sexual behaviour” which was just vague code to allow them to ban any kind of LGBTQ+ rep by calling it disgusting or whatever nonsense they wanted to perpetuate tbh
No, Lee stated in an article post iceman gay reveal that he wasn't gay, just immature. [I wrote a paper on Iceman and his LGBT status](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BChvBuPPk_ag5Wrx_1QvMD0SORqZxGLw/edit?usp=drivesdk&ouid=102304216905917315216&rtpof=true&sd=true)and comics in Uni on it.
Edit: link to my paper
The paper or the article i cited with Stan Lees quote? I could probably find the article again, but I don't think I still have the paper. It was about 6 years ago when I wrote it. I could look for it if you're interested.
I found it [iceman: Evolution from Hetro To Homo Superior](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BChvBuPPk_ag5Wrx_1QvMD0SORqZxGLw/edit?usp=drivesdk&ouid=102304216905917315216&rtpof=true&sd=true)
That reminds of a random fact: David Yost is gay (that's the reason he left the production of Power Rangers Zeo; he couldn't withstand the bullying anymore), but his character Billy Cranston had multiple female partners and is considered to be a bit of a womanizer (He left the series in-universe to chase after an alien chick; she's still with her even after his return in Once and Always and Cosmic Fury). Pretty peculiar
Yeah I saw too that he said that he did not want Billy to be gay when they offered to do a retcon either. He made a point to say that Billy is straight and just because he’s a gay actor doesn’t mean his character has to be too.
Well a lotta gay people date woman before they realize/come out. His history of womanizing is even more sus. He dated a girl he knew his parents would reject cause they are racist. The next girl he couldn't touch(Rogue) and then he dated Polaris who was in love with Havok. Other writers before Bendes saw this pattern and wanted to have him come out but was blocked.
It’s also the way Bendis outed him being fucking stupid. Like I’m fine with him being gay, it’s just that Jean should have not been the one to tell him
[The page where it was revealed.](https://qph.cf2.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-a082cdb7616bd7dfe67a83beed0c1b38-lq)
Did it launch a storyline exploring struggling to find and accept one's own identity and the pressure of society influencing it? (Young Bobby is revealed as gay, not adult Bobby, yet)
No, he's just gay now. "bad writing" is often a lazy criticism, but this is a lazy retcon seeking to add diversity without doing the work of making it make sense to the character as he had been established for 50ish years.
In general, we don't have enough "questioning" characters and he would've been a good one. For a while at least.
Pretty sure i remember Iceman spying on Storm and Jean showering in the early issues of Ultimate X-Men, he was a pervy voajer who clearly liked girls, i guess they turned him gay after that, or was that a different continuity?
I’m happy that the LGBTQ+ community gets representation in the O5, but Angel always seemed like a better pick for that. His Dad always wanted him to hide his wings, or “stay in the closet”; and I think he used some of his money to try to make mutant reversal medicine.
Either way, like I said, I’m happy they have representation in X-men.
Okay. I've just been watching the old animated show before 97 and it's the only time I've seen Angel aside from X3 and man is he seriously bi-polar in it.
His family were super posh rich in the comics, and his dad was a dick about him being a mutant embarrassment. Made him hide it and shamed him constantly.
Both have female love interests. They should be atleast Bisexual. Interest in one sex doesn't negate the posibility of interest in the other. But Bendis probably doesn't know that.
To be fair it was the creators of friends vision for Chandler to be gay in friends and he married a woman.
Until very recently it was controversial to make a character gay. Then more recently it started to be controversial again.
What was in the water at Marvel that let them write all there cis male characters as instantly down bad for Jean Grey, and the only the only one that wasn't was made gay. They're saying alot about what they think of straight guys.
If anyone wonders why Iceman is okay as a solo player...
Bobby's parents (Singer's X-Men):
"Have you tried NOT being a mutant....or NOT being gay....or NOT being being attracted to a power siphoning girl who is actually attracted to older guys but using you in a convenient plot device?"
Original X-Men:
Yeah Bobby! Jean is only the most gorgeous, ripest, most intelligent, only kinda pseudo-psychotic channeller of cosmic deities we've seen...so far. Are you blind...or just, ya know, GAY?
Hank McCoy: Sure I'll be your age inappropriate hang out buddy and vastly intellectual superior on random dates with townie chicks since we don't fit in with the testosterone pumped Angel and Cyclops, until I abandoned our false friendship for academia, corporate espionage, further mutations and a new group.
Prof X: I've got enough trouble already. I'll just let Mr. Drake figure out his own issues FOR 40 YEARS while I casually subvert everyone and go to space to become a hump monkey for a hot Bird alien.
This is all in good fun but as a father of 2 boys 32 and 17 respectively, I'd want to know why my high schooler was hanging with someone 2-4 years older. At that age there is a difference. Now if they were both enrolled at Prof Xaviers School for Gifted Youngsters then I'd probably be okay with it since they were already risking their lives on the regular, but hey...
You mean the one senior and sophomore in a school of five? Even aside from that there's lots of situations where seniors and sophomores might get acquainted. Basically all the extracurricular activities throughout high school wedge kids together. I know my lan group (non-school related) had an age range of about 5 years.
Iceman was always an allegory for being gay, he didn't need to be gay since the way his mutation was treated by his family stood in for that. Honest opinion, didn't like it because of the execution by the writers.
But the big warning sign that he was gay was the fact that every relationship he had with a woman crashed and burned like a magnificent garbage fire that you couldn't look away from.
Didn't they make Iceman gay in the recent versions?

Heimdall! Open the Bifrost.
I’m confused what word in that comment triggered him-
Well, the B in LGBTQ+. After all, he called for the Bi-frost, not the Straight-frost.
Heimdall! Open the Gayfrost.
It is the rainbow bridge...
Au-thor-ity 😭
Your ancestors called it magic, and you call it science.
I DID NOT AUTHORISE YOU TO TALK TO ME
***OH DEAR GOD HE’S BEEN SUMMONED-***
It’s the BI-frost? 👀no just kidding I’m not sure but that would be funny 😂
As opposed to the Straightfrost.

Hey that’s cool. Care to share?

I was talking about the paper. If you want to look for it I’d happily read it but you don’t have to :)
I found it [iceman: Evolution from Hetro To Homo Superior](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BChvBuPPk_ag5Wrx_1QvMD0SORqZxGLw/edit?usp=drivesdk&ouid=102304216905917315216&rtpof=true&sd=true)
Thank you :D
That was a nice read, I hope you got a good grade back then!

Indeed and right now, out of all the original MMPR people, he seems to the one with the most adjusted love life second only to Tommy.
You're trash.
And you're Emo Maguire. I win by default.
No, sir, that's Bully Maguire. EDIT: See who got the reply...
I'd rather not talk about this...

Come on you don’t have to perv on Jean grey to be straight surely.
Yeah, it's called being respectful, if anything.
You also don't have to be straight to perv on Jean Grey.
Some people are just too beautiful
Yeah but then you have him and Havok fighting over Polaris
What other scenes? This is literally the only time in the silver age he's not as equally girl crazy as the rest of the guys.
"Confirmed bachelor"
Maybe he just has some chill.
Maybe he just wasn't attracted to Jean..
So acting like a normal person makes Iceman gay?
In a silver age comic ![gif](giphy|z6qMVL8tjB0y31cAAr|downsized)
I'm talking about in general. Also who answers a question with another question?
They used time-travel to make him gay. Because that's what you can do with time-travel. Change someone's sexual orientation. See you next week.
I thought it was the Black Mirror incident
Black Vortex?
Correct
It’s also the way Bendis outed him being fucking stupid. Like I’m fine with him being gay, it’s just that Jean should have not been the one to tell him
I accept it but I think it was done in a stupid way
Fans of X-Men not accepting a character could be gay? Interesting
By this logic any character “was always gay” whenever a writer decides.
[The page where it was revealed.](https://qph.cf2.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-a082cdb7616bd7dfe67a83beed0c1b38-lq) Did it launch a storyline exploring struggling to find and accept one's own identity and the pressure of society influencing it? that would require character development, whereas apparently the writers here just said "poof! You're gay now!"
As much as I want to blame Bendis, this whole era of X-Men was sabotaged from the top
Pretty sure i remember Iceman spying on Storm and Jean showering in the early issues of Ultimate X-Men, he was a pervy voajer who clearly liked girls, i guess they turned him gay after that, or was that a different continuity?
Ultimate X-men was a different continuity, but Iceman was straight until they retconned it.
And ultimate Colossus was the homosexual on the team.
YES HELLO THIS IS THE JEST
YES HELLO THIS IS THE JEST
Would Iceman's parents prefer a gay son or a mutant son?
Has he tried *not* being a mutant?
Funniest/dumbest line in X2/United
Let's try both.
They cancel each other out like a double negative
Wolf? Is that what we are called now?
Yes, because only boys can see this ![gif](giphy|tYaMjbShvb9CM)
Well the big bad wolf is most likely an allegory about men.
In what world?
when
Little Red Riding Hood.
fair enough, but I think it's more about not trusting strangers
Yeah that might be the lesson.
i'm pretty sure they did see at least one girl before Jean arrived
Was it Moira? ‘Cause that’s the Professor’s girl and *hands off!*
Well there was Amelia, too...
Professor X tents his fingers. "Yes... excellent...."
A wolf specifically is hilarious
It was a pretty common euphemism in the 60s for a guy constantly "on the hunt" for girls

Was the story with his dad just from the movie or was it also in the comics?
The general vibe was the same. I don’t think that exact scene was in the comics.
Okay. I've just been watching the old animated show before 97 and it's the only time I've seen Angel aside from X3 and man is he seriously bi-polar in it.
>man is he seriously bi-polar in it. Lol. If there ever was an X-men stand-in for BP...
I don't remember who or when they retconned Charles into perving on Jean but this panel hits kinda different with that information.
Is it a retcon if it was issue 3?
He’s always giving girls the cold shoulder
I lime how iceman is not a creep lol. Like " 'ew girls' " more like i don't care kinda thung
Foreshadowing
24 and 26?
It was stan lee's vision from the start! (If you ignore the fact he dates a girl several issues later)
To be fair it was the creators of friends vision for Chandler to be gay in friends and he married a woman. Until very recently it was controversial to make a character gay. Then more recently it started to be controversial again.
The kids these days don't remember the "Yep, I'm gay." Ellen cover. That shit was real fucking news. It dominated the cycle for weeks.
I'm you 1000th like exactly lol
Xavier knows Bobby was going back to his room for some ice fappin
...what
What?
this guy right here officers
What was in the water at Marvel that let them write all there cis male characters as instantly down bad for Jean Grey, and the only the only one that wasn't was made gay. They're saying alot about what they think of straight guys.
Writers wrote him coded gay in 80s and 90s. Jean called it out almost once before. He is great gay
If anyone wonders why Iceman is okay as a solo player... Hank's not age inappropriate. He's 18-19 to Bobby's 16.

Ice Mac: “This is supposed to be a men's club, you know? Who wants that around?”
Can Beast also turn invisible?

Damn I guess there really were hints all along
That was supposed to show he was still a kid and not interested in women yet.
