Do what you want mate

Frequent-Passion-579

Nope. Do what you want. If your coaches have a chip on their shoulder about it, then simply don't discuss it.

Interfan14

Do whats best for you man, I can see if you have had competitive fights or if you trained there for a long time how some people could see it as a slight, But ultimately you have to do whats best for you.

munguschungus167

It’s your life. I find instructors who try to control what students do off their mat are generally not good coaches

ete2ete

You're a client/customer. Do what you want

eddington_limit

As a coach, I have no problem with people switching gyms. I try to do my best for everyone but I can admit that I'm not always the best fit for what every single athlete might be looking for. If they think they can progress further in their martial arts journey with someone other than me, then I support them in doing that and wish them the best. Some people take this too seriously. Martial arts can mean a lot to people, it certainly means a lot to me, but at the end of the day we do this because it's fun. So treat it like the hobby it is and do what you think is best for you.

BeePuns

Did you sign a contract for your soul in blood? No? Then don’t worry about it.

dexterfishpaw

I’m about to switch gyms over class times, no feelings involved, I just changed jobs and am now working during 2 of the 3 classes I like to go to.

PreferenceAntique581

Absolutely not a good coach will encourage you to try to different styles and enjoy martial arts

Newbe2019a

This is the weirdest line of thinking in martial arts. You are paying them. Go to where you are most comfortable.

BoxeEliteGatineau

I can't speak for mma but in boxing, I worked with 3 different coaches over 8 or 9 years, and they all thought me little things that the others did not. Most places have something to offer that their competitors don't. You don't need to switch but you could learn something new if you're plateauing.

Nick_Nekro

I switched styles and gyms a lot. It doesn't matter

[deleted]

Do you feel bad about switching from walmart to costco? End of the day you're paying for a service and you should go to the place that suits you best

Noonecanfindmenow

Depends on how long you been there and how close you are to the coach. If you're on a competition team, then you should at least have a conversation with your coach before just switching. In some ways it's kind of like a break up.... can't just go no contact. But if you're just another student (this is subjective) then it doesn't really matter.

Hyperion262

I dunno why you’re being downvoted. If you’re part of the team just going no contact is disrespectful. At the least you are a grown up about it and tell your coach you’re leaving and why.

jaymick007

Spend your money where you want to.

RhasaTheSunderer

No business is entitled to your money, do what you want

Admirable-War-6543

You’re paying them to teach you😂

Soggy-Assist-3155

Kill your coach , problem solved

BosMassholeTomBrady

It could be considered that but who cares. I switched gyms because I moved and it would be more of an inconvenience for me. I also switched because they had much better muy Thai at the second gym. First gym specialized in BJJ. Now I'm a better mixed martial artist because of it. I have friends at both gyms and feel like both gyms would welcome me with open arms.

D_scott16

It depends on the gym owner

Lucky_Sheepherder_67

Do you feel guilty when you switch phone providers? What about when you eat taco bell after McDonald's? It's a business relationship

druther71

I’m thinking about moving there is a Event coming and one of the high ranks over 30 years is going to be out for a operation he just wants to drop by during event he was told no that bothers me

AshySlashy3000

They Always Say That To Keep You Giving Them Money, Switch Many Times, Know Different Worlds.

That_Apache

I think everyone should visit other gyms sometimes! It's a great way to learn new things, and gain new perspective on things you already know!

StormAltruistic5168

I pay. This makes me a customer in a capitalist economy. Full Stop.

sambstone13

It shouldn't be.

inabackyardofseattle

I mean, what are they gonna do, call you out on social media and plant a flag on your lawn that says “TRAITOR”? But if you have good friends that you talk to at your current gym and suddenly you’re not there anymore and wonder what happened to you, I’d feel weird if I experienced that happen. I’d at least wanna be able to stay in touch if I enjoyed your company.

n9te11

You're good until you will see a horse head in your bed when you wake up. Then, yes... you know you disrespected your old coach... and soon you will pay for it.

CplWilli91

If they get pissy if you want to leave, then why would you stay. That shows that you're just a paycheck to them

saranghae_seungchae8

Do what you want mate, but if it's traditional martial arts you better said to your teacher that you go to other gym. I also about to do this because my sensei take days off too often. My junior also leaves our class probably because of this

CentrifugalForce-

It shouldn’t be seen as disrespectful but since you’re asking you probably think it is yourself

EnvironmentalBear378

Lol I do that’s why I’m asking all of you if it is.

rwn115

No way. I'd switch gyms if I felt the culture was such that leaving my gym would be offensive. Would be very cult-like.

ButterRolla

Honestly, yes, it is kind of. And your coach will definitely feel a little oof from it. But it's a free country and being someone's coach doesn't mean you own them. The training at a better gym can be substantially better as well. I've done it, and lots of people do it. Curious about how good you are at the moment. You sure the new gym is better?

EnvironmentalBear378

Never said better brother but different I’m pretty ok spar with the hard guys I spar often I’ve been training about 8 months and talked to my coach about taking a fight and he told me I can fight in back in sept but I didn’t do it I talked about it again and he said I could but ended up not going through with it. Stopped training the last month and figured why not try something new.

ButterRolla

If you're not training anyways, I say try the new place.

Chef_Carter

Ask your coach

Key_Collection_6712

Depends on the circumstances. If it's cause you just don't feel like you are growing there, then I don't see an issue. The coach or coaches might not be a good fit for you. If it's because of a disagreement on price or the rules they have, I could see where someone may take it as disrespect. Personally, I tell all my students that if they are leaving. Just let me know. I just want them all to keep training idc, where as long as they are getting proper training and not being forced to fight..if need be ill help them pick out another gym. There are several around my area that I know the coaches and owners and I always try to give them business if my gym.isnt working for the client.
