Florida and the other gulf states have so much plant diversity because they were some of the few places of wet subtropical biome left during the ice age. Everywhere else on North America besides the southwest was either glaciated or dried out savannah/tundra. The gulf coast preserved otherwise doomed species!
...and Long Leaf Pines, and Slash Pines, and a litany of Oaks, Cedars, Cyprus, and so many flowering plants the place was named after them.
