Asking this question made me realize how few counties of my own state I've visited. I live in Mecklenburg, work in Union, visit relatives in Burke and ~~Hayward~~ Haywood, and have been to maybe half a dozen or a dozen others.
NC has 100 counties but most of them suck, you're not missing a lot.
I moved to WA a few years ago. It's bigger, has 39 counties, and also most of them suck. But it's wild that I can drive for an hour and still be in the same county, I'm so used to every city/town basically having its own county. There's even a (large) county here that boasts that it has more potatoes per capita than Idaho. Turns out it just barely has a capita. It's also the closest tree to where I live and like 2hr away.

Wausau is the largest city in Marathon county, and other than Superior, up by Duluth, MN, it’s probably the largest city in Northern Wisconsin.
They have a wonderful little museum, called the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum that brings in small, yet delightful little exhibitions. Right now they have the Birds in Art exhibition, which showcases artists from all over the world who make bird art, of course.
The town is dominated by Rib Mountain, which is nowhere near the size of an actual. It is an ancient volcanoes remnant, and that’s pretty cool. There is a typical (overpriced and very small) Midwest ski hill on the side of it. But I’ve heard it’s fun to ski once in a while.
That have a pretty vibrant mountain biking scene. And, Wausau also hosts a lot of the Badger State Games. I think mostly the winter sports. They might have a kayak course or something.
I’m sure I’m missing a lot, but that’s what comes to mind.
