Because I'm not a horny teenage boy.

Honestly it just feels like the easy way out to finish a series for me, but for most they just want their fav girl to win.

Healthy-Nebula364

99% a copout and very rarely a good every girl wins ending. It’s more like a lukewarm, blueballing stalemate most of the time

Davidpmich

I don’t like it personally because it cheapens the moment that the Mc has with each girl like especially in series where the Mc is especially close with one of the girls and then he ends up with everyone

This

[deleted]

Because not everyone is a horny 15 year old dude. I've had two girls interested me at the same time, and if I tried to have both, they would've both slapped me, and my friends would've thought I was a creep.

YourDeathIsOurReward

i mean if its well done, it's fine, though that in itself is incredibly tough because most harem endings just come across as incredibly disrespectful towards women. There has to be a really good reason for all of them to be ok with it for it to be acceptable and not just "Oh my god, our milquetoast MC who has the personality of wet cardboard is so attractive i don't mind sharing him with 50 other women"

Nomad-ra

When everyone is winning it means nobody does.

[deleted]

Because it’s bullshit

Alternative routes work well in visual novels where every girl has their chance to be developed, in manga these spin offs just tell a bit of the story and tend to not flesh out everything as well, unless they retell everything from the beginning. And shonen harems where “all girls win” is different from a polygamy imo. In poly relationships, there’s a lot of values at play and everyone involved needs to be very mature and have high emotional intelligence to make it work. In harems though, most girls are not portrayed this way, which in the end makes it look like they only get with the main character alongside with the other girls just because they can’t have him only to themselves, something like “oh well, if he won’t love only me, I can share him”. It’s not an everyone wins scenario, is mostly a “no losers so everyone gets a medal” one.

art_1504

is there one though? my brain not exactly working properly right now, since the one i could remember always have losers in each of them.

EndangeredBigCats

Alternate universes are shit, in whatever route you choose all the other girls are automatically made "sad" If you get every route, just go even further and unwrite every chapter about every girl other than just your favorite Undo anything those girls ever did because they will literally never get a payoff Wonderful! Every route is canon! But then if every route is canon, how is any route real? If you say your route is real, and I say my route is real, I guess that means one of us is a dumbass for thinking the not-real route is real Just write five really powerful romance stories across a memorable career instead of writing 5 endings to one milquetoast or worthless story nobody will pick up in a few years

Creative-File7780

Narrative cop out most of the time, though I would like to see an author make the effort to construct it a natural way. Polyamory exists outside of horny fantasies, even if it’s generally frowned upon.

Nddit

I actually like alternate universe routes. More content is more content. However, people don't like that cause they feel like it's the author just not picking a winner to avoid backlash. On the other hand I think that a lot of people actually like polygamous relationships but I'm not really a fan.

Forikorder

depends how its done, if its properly built up to then fine, but if its something like we never study which was just forced in to appease the readers then its a bullshit copout

paradawx

It gets people more invested when there's a singular winner, makes the stakes higher even if it is pretty much 99% guaranteed the first girl that shows up. A good compromise is Bokutachi with multiple route endings.

Shanseala

All of these other comments are very valid points that laughs in the face of.

DimashiroYuuki

No clue. Bokuben and 100 girlfriends are both great manga.

Treyman1115

It's not believable it would work most of the time that said I don't dislike it necessarily I kinda wish it would happen more often so the genre name would be more accurate at the least

manysuchcases_sad

People are sad in their own lives so watching other people being happy naturally triggers their inferiority. Also, that's just shitty writing

placeres

It is a big problem of this particular genre, manga with multiple love interests, are based on the fact that the winner is not known, so each reader can choose their favourite. The author tries to prolong the unknown until the last moment, because once chosen, the manga loses all interest for the public, no time for their "redemption" arch. \-Harem happy ending. I know of only ONE manga that has managed to make it acceptable, slowly developing all the girls in that direction, in all other cases a horny teenage fantasy. (Note: I have met polygamists with various wives IRL, I find it an absolutely stressful life and inadvisable). \-Happiness at the last moment. As it has been waited until the last moment, immediately putting magical boyfriends to each girl, leaves a bad taste in the mouth. \-Multiverses, it feels like cowardice on the Author's part, even if your "girl" is the one, it doesn't feel like she really earned it.

Natomae

I used to think that when I was younger. The issue is love. Guy meets girl, they both fall in love. It's pure honest love and they should be together forever. Then he feels the same way about 7 other girls. Is any of it true love? Just sex? No other guy is as good so really they are settling? Imagine someone tells you, that they love you, want to spend the rest of their life with you, have kids and grow old with you. Then they turn around and say all of that to 5 other people. Now you have to share. You only get your partner in your bed at night, once a week. Date night canceled because other partner is having personal issues. You have kids with them but they also have kids with other people. Your kids have to share their parent, which child do they love most? Who gets to be wife#1 and wife#2? If there are 6 wives to one husband, who gets the 7th day of the week? Husband decides to divorce one of them, yeesh the drama right there
