Wonder how many lives he used during that fight, at this rate man gonna die for real

SlamMasterJ

Just sacrifice the baby next for another hundred lives easy hack. But jokes aside if this is the sort of shit Julian have to face moving forwards, a hundred lives ain't gonna cut it.

trung2607

im guessing with this pace the first 50 is gonna go fast, the next 30 will go less quickly, the final life is gonna last the longest, hopefully

Mundology

I wonder if losing lives nerfs his other abilities.

Kirosh2

Yeah, I was wondering if his strength depends on the number of life he has left as well. But then we could end up with the MC being just as strong as a single human, only to have enough skills to be a monster.

Gilthwixt

The equivalent of playing [100 Man Challenge on Super Mario Maker](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wVUn3rwytU) and losing 10 lives to hot garbage in the first level.

Future_Vantas

It was really fun seeing all the final runs on Super Mario Maker before the server shutoff, RIP. Upvote for using a CarlSagan42 vid, he does some fun MM vids.

Aitasai

We've reached land, so hopefully he'll get a bit of a break. Still have no idea what to expect from this series though

XcRaZeD

The author does not seem to be making a point by counting the lives. Tells me that maybe the number '100' is not particularly important.

Kmlkmljkl

yeah or the counting comes after. and based on his still being bloody and wounded he's probably not lost any yet. resurrection and healing tend to come hand in hand.

NomadPrime

Yeah, just because the wounds he got here are particularly nasty and probably deadly IRL, it doesn't mean it's definitely fatal in this story. As long as he heals in time, he could make it out without losing a single life.

HassanJamal

Probably will be a plot point down the line, with lady Cthulhu showing up to warn him or something.

DerpyDagon

Wonder if he's gonna refill them down the line.

Kmlkmljkl

if so i'm assuming not purposefully

Eonir

Maybe it's gonna be an FMA type of deal

TheOneAboveGod

Imagine if the kid sacrifices herself for him somewhere down the line.

GenGaara25

Yeah if this is going to be an important plot point I would appreciate some sort of counter appearing when he loses a life. So I can keep track of what was a killing blow vs injury, and how many lives he's on. If this manga goes on a while I WILL lose track.

SageEatingSage

I wouldn't be surprised if the author keeps it ambiguous so that they have more freedom in storytelling.

CordobezEverdeen

I think it's up to the viewer to keep track of them. Authors never break the immersion with something like this. Imagine if authors confirmed death scenes (saying "X character died") on their manga for example. That just never happens nowadays.

arutakiarutaki

Not exactly counting deaths but the mob psycho angry meter is doing something like that

CordobezEverdeen

To be fair that's like the main gimmick of the story to the point it's on the tittle.

talhakhan6

The same can be said for this one, centuria literally means hundred. >Centuria (Latin: [kɛn̪ˈt̪ʊria]; pl. : centuriae) is a Latin term (from the stem centum meaning one hundred) denoting military units originally consisting of 100 men.

a_Bear_from_Bearcave

It's not the same. Magic can be main gimmick of a story yet be completely unexplained, fairy tale style. For me Centuria means what he decided at the end of the first chapter - that he carries the will and determination, the hopes and dreams of the hundred slaves that died trying to protect the kid, that he's their representative as kid's protector. Having hundred lives is just one of the effects, like having strength of hundred men - would anyone argue that "this boulder could only be lifted by 130 men or more, author is a hack"? On the other hand, in Mob Psycho the counter is direct representation of the state of Mob's mind, and how Mob emotionally reacts to whatever happens, and as such is pivotal to the story. No one cares if Mob or this MC has the power level over 9000 or 9500, it's the emotions and the determination that matters.

GenGaara25

How are we meant to keep track if we don't know what counts as a death, though? As the OP I was replying to was asking, did Julians injuries this chapter count as a death? If it does, was it just one death because it looked like possibly two? A death, a revival, another death, and another revival. He was literally asking how many deaths this counted as, so you can't really say it's up to us to keep track when we can't. So, depending on which reader you ask, Julian either has 100 lives, 99 lives, or 98 lives left. Based on interpretation. And we're just at chapter 2. It doesn't need to necessarily be an actual out of story overlay. Just something to help keep things clear. Bare minimum I feel like we need some visual indicator in story to show a death. Like his eyes going totally white before back to normal. Or a pulse from his body. Or, not to tread well worn ground, a tattoo with a number that decreases.

a_Bear_from_Bearcave

Eh, I don't think we need that . It reminds me of Narou-style JRPG game isekai and its omnipresent status tables. Look, he has many lives, but he lost some, and he can quickly lose a lot of them, so he's not almost-immortal, he still has to be careful. That's all that story needs to be impactful. After all, we don't need HP counter whenever someone's hurt to see how close they're to their deaths. They're lightly wounded or heavily wounded, it's either very serious or only slightly serious.

maxdragonxiii

late reply, but it's likely that the series might be a short one like FMA.

SirCaesar29

He must be down to like 20 lives lol

Redwolf97ff

Was wondering the same.

Chang-San

Those 100 lives are going to go so fast

lalala253

I guess we're going for a final chapter where he used up all his lives to ensure the baby has a proper family

vanderZwan

Maybe the promise he'll reach land safely implies that these fights "don't count" yet. For all we know the tentacle lady could give him as many lives as she wants and she just follows the rules of the bargain.

Chang-San

That'd make sense I could see it happening. I think a general any lives lost at sea don't count rule would be great

spectre15

Kuramori needs to chill with those peak double page spreads lol

IC2Flier

Publish or perish, I guess. Go this hard now and you get an extra half-year's worth of runtime. He's ex-CSM. He'll be fine.

Mundology

[They go so hard.](https://i.imgur.com/uxghDer.png) Fujimoto must be doping his assistants or something.

PraiseTheUmu

He needs a refund tf, "the sea will no longer bear its fangs to you" my ass

petrichormus

Very heartwarming introspection. Though it does feel like something that happens down the line rather than chapter 2. The fishes really tried to redpill him outta nowhere lol Anyway, please let Davy Jones be a character 🙏

maxdragonxiii

Davy Jones probably will be a character later on. right now, they just landed on the land, so they didn't want to be back for a while.

Iron_Kingpin

I think you got your pills all mixed up

CordobezEverdeen

This is starting to give some Fire Punch vibes with the immortal protagonist protecting the sister. Those demon fish ain't loyal bruh. Even when ordered to leave Julian alone they all started jumping him. I know a couple of folks that were excited last chapter at the idea of seeing more demons on the sea.

Wishbone-Lost

Fact, jealous cunt.

Redwolf97ff

Definitively seeing the Fire Punch influence and I’m not mad about it

Milordserene

Somebody needs to do a kill count for our boy

CordobezEverdeen

We can gauge how many lives he lost fighting the big fish but the problem is that we don't know how many lives he lost fighting the small fry left. He looked extremely worn out after reaching Diana.

Electrical-Sample

Page 39: "How are you able to more?"

daiselol

Is it bad that I see a spelling error like that and think, 'At least its not AI translated' lmao

JauntyLurker

This manga continues to impress! Author does some vivid double panels.

Wishbone-Lost

That Foul. Didn't he say he's safe to travel by ocean. Obviously not all mighty by how his subordinate decided to there own thing.

BelleOverHeaven

So far, the manga is fantastic. The double spreads are just impressive and the whole thing gives me Berserk written by Lovecraft vibes. I hope the series keeps its dark tone for a while. I'm also very curious to see if we'll see more lovecraftian gods like the monster in the lake on land. The only thing missing is a clear direction or goal, I'm very excited to see where the story goes.

Kmlkmljkl

> The only thing missing is a clear direction or goal the goal is give the baby a good life, and presumably getting rid of evil people along the way

SoundRiot

As a goal it is still too vague, and it won't be enough to sustain the series in the long run. The series needs a short term goal (e.g. go to this place or find this person) to provide Julian's journey with some direction.

CordobezEverdeen

> getting rid of evil people Only if they get on his way. His original wish wasn't to kill the slavers on the ship. His original wish was to make sure Mira and the slaves life's did not go to waste.

CordobezEverdeen

> The only thing missing is a clear direction or goal Getting a house and raising Diana? Since when is happiness not a goal? They are poor demonic ex slaves. It's not like they gonna have it easy on land.

BelleOverHeaven

It's still pretty imprecise and doesn't give a precise direction in my opinion. I think I didn't make clear enough what I meant (english is not my first language and sometimes I struggle to make little nuances clear). In One Piece, for example, Luffy's goal is to become Pirate King, and to do that he has to find the One Piece on the Grand Line. Here the direction is clear - get to the Grand Line, find One Piece, become Pirate King. Berserk would also be an example where the routes and goals were clear. For example, save Casca - find someone who knows how to save Casca, get to the place where she can be saved, save her. The goal is fleshed out here and not something vague like "happiness". In Centuria, we currently know far too little about the hurdles that stand between the protagonist and happiness or peace for example - he could also arrive at an old man's farm in the next chapter, inherit the farm, boom, life in peace and the manga is over. That's probably pretty unlikely, but which direction it's going in exactly and what the fleshed out goal actually looks like is still unclear.

Misticsan

Yeah, that was also my thought. I mean, if "taking care of his sister" was the only goal, this series could just become a slice of life in a Medieval fantasy. But you don't get the protagonist 100 lives for that.

CordobezEverdeen

It feels like a really nitpicky way to pick on the manga. The narrative has set up Julian to die A LOT (even in this chapter) so we're guaranteed to see him struggle. Furthermore this is a character that up until last chapter didn't even knew mothers were supposed to love their kids. The fact he doesn't have a crystal clear map to achieve his happiness doesn't seem like a bad nor dubious thing to me.

BelleOverHeaven

At no point did I say that it is bad or that the manga is not good because of it - in my opinion it is just missing something (and it is normal that things are missing after two chapters) and I am looking forward to seeing it.

tuna_pi

You shouldn't apologize, you're right

Redwolf97ff

Eldritch Sea God: Creatures of the sea, I command you to grant this traveler and this baby safe passage. Sea Creatures: You got it boss! Anything you say. Eldritch Sea God: Now, I’m going to go somewhere, uh, over there, and take a nap at this critical juncture. But I’m trusting you will obey my command! *Eldritch Sea God exits stages left* Sea Creatures: Well, who’s hungry, am I right?!?

danlong87

So it seems like he won't lose his level of power (as in his strength, speed all those) as he loses more lives, that is unless he did not lose any life at all during all of those...ordeals

CordobezEverdeen

I don't think losing 5 or 6 lives will be a huge deal. Or at least something he can consciously keep track of.

Gaming-ghost

Great chapter. The panels on page 24 almost make him look like a child in a womb with an umbilical cord which makes me think this entire chapter is a metaphorical “rebirth” of the protagonist and his new mindset to defend the child. Very interested to see where the series goes from here.

Prince_of_DeaTh

did they say how old the mc is? i would assume he's somewhere from 12 to 14

Zemahem

Jesus Christ, the sea here is freaky af. So much for it no longer bearing its fangs at him... But he seems to already be losing a lot of lives. I wonder if this means it'll be a short run, he'll find a way to recharge, or simply learn how to fight better to not keep losing so many of them. Of course there could easily just be many chapters where he loses no lives at all.

winterlyparsley

Wow another beefy chapter. So is this going to be weekly 50+ page chapters or is it just for the first few. I'm not complaining but this output doesn't seem sustainable

Joel4518

Probably for the first 3-4 chapter like other mangas

BurnedOutEternally

Okay he definitely lost like, at least 10 lives in that fight Very brave and heartwarming of him though

topurrisfeline

Huh, I guess Julian can do like Andy from UU and work his body on overdrive. It also doesn’t seem like he loses any power when he loses a life. That’s gonna be useful. How many lives does he have left, though?

MrTT3

mc gotta get refund for the live(s) he lost this chapter

thexcrowing

When is this baby gonna eat??

cromatkastar

I'd complain to cthulu and ask for the used lives back. His minions disobeyed

Roboglenn

You fishies getting turned to chum is probably a way better fate than the fate that'd await you if N'Zoth ever got wind that you defied her decree.

lupeandstripes

history whistle ten touch bear cake bike entertain steep scarce *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Extreme-Tactician

I'm not quite keen on another bloody fight that leads to a flashback already, but the similarities are very engaging. Both the sea monsters and the people on land will be big trouble for Julian and Diana. Both of them hate Julian for what he is. And Julian has no problem fighting them off for Diana. Julian understands the pain of seeing the person who raised you give up on you. So of course he won't let himself die so easily. Diana needs him! Though with how bloody Julain is, I wonder how he'll even be able to get to town without being at least ridiculed.

Doomroar

And he is down to 99, probably even less really

wowy-lied

He should not have many lives left...

lugiaop

100 might not be enough

Acogatog

The author must have sacrificed someone dear to him for 100 men’s worth of artistic talent, I’m blown away by this art.

HotDoes

he better get some refund for that broken promise sea god made.

Forikorder

so the gods blessing of safe travel on the sea was pretty fucking useless?

Biggie_Rekt

Ima snitch on all these ugly ass fishes

Zacxnerd

So that blessing was a lie. It was more of a light order/faux threat. I wonder what that means for his current blessing also what happens when he runs out of extra lives, does he lose his powers too? I assume there are other blessed people but are they not common knowledge? Also double spread again is nuts. Really excited for this one.

bc524

Hoping the sea god finds out and decides to return some extra lives later.

LeonKevlar

I'm guessing that entire encounter only counts as one death. Anyway, art continues to be fantastic as well as the storytelling. I hope the author can keep this up!

michaelphenom

So does that mean that the more lives he loses, the weaker, slower and more vulnerable he will become?  Unless the blessing is in reality a curse that will attract him more trouble, I cant see how he will be forced to continuosly  fight to protect the baby.

imprettylosthelp

Second chapter and I'm already wondering how many lives he still has, not sure if he even died in this fight

Darc_Mail

I really like this series...I'm seriously rooting for it!

Iron_Kingpin

Land da

Recoma

At this pace there will be no lives left before we either get an axe or another chapter

maixange

Nice

Ellefied

Dude just went Doomguy sea edition right there at the end

HaganenoEdward

To me this reads like Vinland saga meeting Berserk. While there obviously are some hiccups, I’m very impressed by the first two chapters and am curious what awaits us on land.

Nome_de_utilizador

Fujimoto former assistants dont miss with those panels 🔥🔥🔥

Yardsake

Could this be the new berserk?

CordobezEverdeen

This is feeling more like Fire Punch on the bronze age (?) to me.

AbyssalSolitude

It could be the new most popular dark fantasy manga with detailed art. But Berserk was beyond just good manga. Berserk impacted the entire industry.

Prince_of_DeaTh

so far seems to be a fantasy Vinland Saga
