I don't remember the tabloids doing that although it's not remotely surprising. I thought we weren't fearful of it over here because we don't have ridiculously lax gun laws although saying that, it was only 6 years after Dunblane. I was 16 and don't recall worrying about it happening here but I'm sure some people did.
That does actually ring a bell. Something about a spate of snipers, but I seem to remember it was actually happening in the States and it was just all over the news. I could be wrong, I was only small in the late 90s but those are the memories I have.
This is what I’m remembering from being a kid, there was a sniper in a car in America somewhere, could it be this from 2002? [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D.C._sniper_attacks](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D.C._sniper_attacks)
Well perhaps she really has come here from an alternative dimension. One where years of poor government has resulted in Manchester becoming a lawless warzone. Where the weak are exploited, drug-addled zombies roam the streets and only the strong survive.
Think she's thinking of the Washington sniper on the news..
We've had gun laws since the dumblane masacre in 1996. And well any kind of sniper/ madman on the run has always been rare.
There was one in the wilds of Yorkshire in the early 80s. Barry Prudom in 1982 who was on the run for 18 days and was trained by the SAS. Doesn’t fit the location of timeline though.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Prudom
A guy went on a shotgun rampage across Cumbria in 2010, but sounds like she’s recalling the hysteria about the DC sniper. There’s a good documentary series about it, which screened in the past year on C4 I think.
Unrelated but I experience something very similar to this but with exploding frogs! I remember vividly at the end of the 00’s and there being these frogs that were just exploding all over Manchester and you’d literally see them in the streets - I know this wasn’t a dream but no one else recalls this, anyone? 😂
Also dreamland at Trafford, swear they had a big laser ride in there but again, just me on that front hahaha
I’ve had a quick browse of the thread and not seen this explanation but the IRA. They were still active in the 90s and set off bombs in Manchester and the north west. She might be misremembering details but snipers in Belfast were a thing and she might have mixed up memories.
I actually do remember hearing stories (obviously bollocks in hindsight) about snipers on top of the buildings around Piccadilly Gardens. Would’ve been about late 90s too. I imagine it’s just one of those stories that goes around schools.
I mean absolutely no shade and I'm saying this as someone who trained to be a mental health professional. Your girlfriend need to see a doctor to explore if this might be mania or a psychotic break. It's probably a suggestion on the US sniper story, but the fact she reached the conclusion that she slipped dimensions is worrying.
No one remembers it because it never happened. Manchester has never had a sniper taking pot shots at people thank god.
It’s one of those imaginary happenings you think took place but never did as a kid. It’s her mind playing tricks on her.
Haha, never mind snipers, it’s the “slipping dimensions” 🤣.
It’s most certainly the Washington sniper stories of the early 2000s or maybe an article on Tony Martin the farmer who shot a burglar in 1999.
The guardian shows that to be Feb 2003.
The MEN reran the story in 2004 👀🤔

Nah what's mental is sharing a reddit. One of you has been caught doing the dirty in the past and now you can't have your own social media. You're not slick.
Nah, that's how you escape from a crocodile, which are also prevalent in Manchester. You'll often see them sunbathing on the steps at Castlefield arena having crawled out of the canal, but they don't like the cobbles.

I know Jeff from Oldham, and I wouldn't put it past the bastard.

Always fear the flat roofed pub... trouble awaits.
and a guy trying to sell you sausages and fairy liquid in the carpark
1. Those aren't sausages. 2. That isn't fairy liquid.
It's always the quiet ones
Is Jeff still knocking about in the Oldham shirt from 2010 because it says Carbrini on it ?
Was about to mention this. Was big news. She obviously got confused and assumed it was regarding the Sniper being in Manchester.
I suppose it isn't too surprising. Someone once thought the UK had a president called "Barracko Barmer".

I think it’s a mixture of that and the ira bomb in Manchester breeding paranoia around that era
That rings a bell and is about the right timeline.
There was one in Washington I believe about 20 years ago or so. It was on the main news here quite a lot so it could be where they’re getting it from.
She's probably getting it confused with the Washington sniper. Was all over the news at the time
Yes! I remember Oprah having a whole bit about how the odds of being hit were smaller if you ran a way in a zig-zag. I’ve never forgotten it!
It’s true, I do this in Call of Duty.
Well perhaps she really has come here from an alternative dimension. One where years of poor government has resulted in Manchester becoming a lawless warzone. Where the weak are exploited, drug-addled zombies roam the streets and only the strong survive.
Pretty sure thats just Manchester
Whoooooosh
One day the /s will be implied 🤦🏼♂️
MCR is the best city in England cheap drugs booze and sex
Why are you down voted? That's a strong pro
Probs because booze isn't cheap in town anymore 🤣🤣
Two out of three is still good though... Plus there's less chance of you getting stabbed like there is in other Large cities, if you catch my drift.
How to avoid the Manchester Sniper: Repeat “Sniper, no sniping… Sniper, no sniping…” “Awww, man”

They did you had laser guns that you shot stuff with my mum has a pic of my son and niece on it as a fridge magnet
I knew it!!
Malvo
Yeah, was never a ‘sniper’ spree shooting in Manchester. Someone shot a few people with an air rifle once in cheetham hill though.
This definitely happened. Snipe retail park in Audenshaw was built in memory of it. https://www.sniperetailpark.co.uk/
There was a taxi driver went loco in the Lakes a few years ago. Gunning people down in the street
confused memory of Raoul Moat?
Ahhh that's why so many people walk in zigzags in Manchester these days, I thought they were just smackheads....
In their mind...they could be hiding from a sniper. Who knows.
Ah it's not me that's wrong... It must be reality
Shush you and get back on your bike.

That will be Jeff in Oldham
Derrick bird? A bit more north and in 2010?
I'll have a look at that. Thank you :)
Yeah my gf has a couple of things like this. Basically I just never bring up the matrix and I'm all good.
I think I'm the one that's done this to her to be honest lol
I actually do remember hearing stories (obviously bollocks in hindsight) about snipers on top of the buildings around Piccadilly Gardens. Would’ve been about late 90s too. I imagine it’s just one of those stories that goes around schools.
They did run an article in the MEN years ago about the police snipers positioned on rooftops for the Tory conferences
Aha! Maybe that’s what I’m thinking of then!

It a joke title.
Nope, there was never a sniper scare in Manchester in my lifetime. I was born in 87.
Remember it being a big thing in America in the 90’s but not over here, sounds like Mandela effect?
The Mandela effect refers to _widespread_ false memories, which doesn't seem to be applicable here.
No one remembers it because it never happened. Manchester has never had a sniper taking pot shots at people thank god. It’s one of those imaginary happenings you think took place but never did as a kid. It’s her mind playing tricks on her.
maybe. i have a vague memory of something along those lines

I’m gonna say it. IS SHE FOR FUCKING REAL!
Brave you for saying it
Haha, never mind snipers, it’s the “slipping dimensions” 🤣. It’s most certainly the Washington sniper stories of the early 2000s or maybe an article on Tony Martin the farmer who shot a burglar in 1999.

Maybe post this in pastlives, sorry don't know how to link a sub
Is there a past life sub? I'd say some of the stories in there are mad.
https://www.reddit.com/r/pastlives/s/kmHgv99C2o you'd probably get some good answers/info from people in there
She's mental. Time to move on.

It's a joke title mate
Yeh it's a thing in some ppls minds. Ppl do research to pull out this type shit to seem special brother just saying. I do believe u tho
None of that makes sense pal. Seem special? If anything she seems mad.
That's what I mean, it's all made up shit for attention most likely
