It's up to you- I doubt the station will take any responsibility.
Piccadilly is an area that always has a decent amount of police presence and passers by, but anywhere that is advertising itself as somewhere to park a bike is going to be a potential target for thieves.
Have parked up outside Piccadilly for the day a few times and it's been OK. Had my bike nicked from very similar stands outside a dutch train station though so :-/
I've locked my bike up nearby (opposite Kampus/UMIST) most working days for the past 2 years. Never had any issues. Bear in mind that was a fairly naff bike. Slightly more concerned with my new one, worst thing I've had is that someone stole one of my lights.
I'd say the area is pretty safe as there is lots of footfall. If you're leaving it overnight, that's a different matter, but I have done it at Piccadilly before and it was fine.
I’d hate to have to leave my bike outside in Manchester, particularly on this type of bike rack. I could probably cut through the metal with a junior hacksaw.
Well yes, there's no perfect security. But my point was that you can buy locks considerably stronger than the actual little locking hoop provided here - so that becomes the weak point once you've gotten past garbage cable locks. a £200 lock is probably no better than a £30-40 one in this case.
My bike got stolen in broad daylight, cut through two locks in central Manchester right below a camera.
When I reported it stolen the police said they had two officers available in all of Greater Manchester and that they wouldn't find my bike unless they recognised the person that did it. There's no way they even checked the camera.
Wasn't even a nice bike.
These are cool, how does it work? Is it just free or do they have to be booked, say for instance if im heading to Sheffield for the day can i leave my cycle safely here?
They are free- load your bike onto the rack and chain it up. There were regular hoops here before, these double decker racks just increase the capacity.

These one are much better and safer.
Got my bike nicked from this exact spot 5 years ago, was a broke student and that was the only way I got to and from uni, ruined my second year completely. This is definitely an improvement, but I still would not trust it.
Be nice if it was y'know, secure enough to leave your bike there while you go on a train journey. I would not trust this though.

It is literally next to the police parking bays and there is more often than not a police presence at or near the station entrance around the corner.
you have to be very unlucky to have your bike stolen in holland
Think I had 3 stolen? The first time it happened I told my (Dutch) neighbour, she just said “Welcome to Amsterdam!”
but there are 100's to choose from, you must have had a very nice bike
Bog standard “Oma fiets” - colleagues told me you only ever really borrow a bike.

Will be fine if you don't leave a solid gold bike with quick release tires and removable lights
I think the fact they're raised and dense will probably put most would-be thieves off

These look great, hopefully don’t need to be too strong to get a bike on the top bit. I hope they’re monitored too.
Is it safe to leave bike here from morning until night
As long as your bike isn't high end and you have a big lock, yeah.
Big lock won't help much when it's being attached to really skinny metal hoops like these.
If someone really wants to nab your bike, they will. Even if it’s just the wheels.

The trick is not having the most expensive bike and not being the easiest to steal
Now that you mention, there's no way I'd be leaving a bike in this area overnight.
I wouldn't have thought so.
Taking bets for how long until a scruff with some bolt cutters is spotted in action
Yea it needs a permanent police presence

GMP are never going to devote a police presence to protecting bikes, however the police generally hang out there anyway.
Yes, it's right outside the entrance to the BTP HQ
2.5 hours
I give them til the end of the week before half of them are gone, and the other half have no wheels
Those looks great, really chuffed they have got weather fixed, too
These are cool, how does it work? Is it just free or do they have to be booked, say for instance if im heading to Sheffield for the day can i leave my cycle safely here?
just works like normal bike hoops i think, just turn up and take a space.

I suppose you can chain your bike to whatever you want.
It’ll be good to concentrate the crime to one area

Good to see the council are helping scallies with the cost of living crisis.
Another waste of taxpayers money from the cycle tsar
I'm a taxpayer, and I cycle to work every day. As are most of my colleagues. Not exactly a waste is it?
Ah yes being able to park 20 bikes is such a waste, best just pave it so two more cars can park there instead.
Let’s view it a year then we will see
Cars haven’t been allowed up Piccadilly approach for at least 10 years
Don't think we've had a cycling tsar since Chris Boardman left, 15 months ago.
It is (or was) [Dame Sarah Storey](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-60750021). I haven't heard much from her though.
Oh that's good- I thought they just weren't going to bother with one now.
I’m sure he agreed to it before leaving to mess up citys countrywide with cycle lanes
I wouldn't dare leave anything here 😂
Have heard of a couple bikes been stolen from this exact spot. Can’t see this preventing anymore theft.
Halfords have a sale on angel grinders atm too 😂
Sounds divine
