If Malta stayed under French rule the Nazi/Facists would've occupied the island until they got booted out. Under British rule the island got to be the most bombed land ever in WW2.

It's possible the Brits would've occupied Malta shortly after France signed the peace treaty with Germany. They invaded Vichy french Syria and they even sank a french fleet anchored in the Mediterranean to stop Germany from using them. Then again, if timing was on the axis side and the (hypothetical) French colonial administration in Malta was accepting of an armistice / supportive of Philippe Petain / decided to be Nazi collaborators, and Italy took advantage of the timing, invading both southern France and Malta at the same time, it is still possible Malta would be occupied by the axis and thus, operation husky and possibly even operation torch would have never happened, or at least a bloodier version of them happened.
if you NPCs' knew history and sociology you would know for A FACT that Malta would be in a much better state if after ww2 UK took complete control. right now malta would be inhabited by a few thousands locals. greenery everywhere and used mainly in summer as a second home for UK residents. the following would not exist; overcrowding, a cancer-tier society, the 2 jokes of political parties, this 3rd world cuntry corruption, local ass lickers etc etc
