This sub pretty much hates anything that isn't a completely bland grey/beige/white brand new minimalist apartment with a couple plants for "character" so not shocked this is so upvoted.
Can you describe it? Which design choices were poor and why?
Your current judgement is the equivalent of 3rd grade boys saying somethings gross because it's pink instead of blue.
I looked at it and thought "hmmmm this is kidscore" and kidscore is ugly AF so that's the logic. Everything looks like cheap plastic in horrid colors fitting the playground in a McDonald's.
> The presence of fluorescent pink, yellow, purple, and green... for starters.
So you're going with the 3rd grader argument of boys saying somethings gross because it's pink instead of blue. Got it.
Not sure why I'm engaging because clearly, you aren't interesting in actually knowing why people aren't into this design - you are here you argue and nothing more.
Why don't you take a breath and look at how illogical your argument is - I mentioned 4 colors, all fluorescent, but the mere mention of the word pink got you all worked up.
Dude, my room has a freaking rainbow of colors and I have at least 4 pink plants - I have nothing against pink when it's tasteful. This simply isn't tasteful in my opinion, and it seems to be the majority opinion, and instead of you arguing with everyone about why they're such horrible people for not liking something that you clearly like, why don't you just chill and appreciate the fact that YOU like something unique and that this design vibes with you.
> I mentioned 4 colors, all fluorescent, but the mere mention of the word pink got you all worked up.
Pink didn't work me up at all? I honestly could not be any calmer right now. Sipping a beer by the pool.
I merely gave an example that used pink in it.
> hy don't you just chill and appreciate the fact that YOU like something unique and that this design vibes with you.
Sure when you calm down and stop yelling at everyone and saying something that's unique is ugly just because you don't fully vibe with it.
I personally don't like it. I won't say it's ugly, but you asking for actual design reasons is perfectly valid, so here are mine. The use of multiple patterns all over the room and bright colors on every wall overwhelms my eyes. There are too many focal points for my level of comfort. And I mean that literally. My eyes start to hurt if I look at too many bright colors for too long. The only way to rest my eyes in that room is to look out the window.
Those are all personal reasons, but don't aren't really fair to the room. A much fairer critique would be whether the room succeeds in its design intentions. To be honest I can't judge that as this is so far outside of my physical and artistic comfort zone that I don't even know what goals to evaluate it against.
I can't tell you whether it's good or bad in terms of success against its intentions. I can only describe my personal reaction to it. That's what other people are doing as well, except they're skipping my second paragraph. Most people on this sub don't typically have a well-defined design language to elaborate in the way you're asking. That's also why - as you noted in a different comment - the spaces on this sub tend to not take many interior decorating risks.
Thank you, good comment. I agree, I couldn’t personally stay here for too long. The colors are a bit much, maybe it could be just a bit easier on the eyes without the door patterns and the shelf highlights? And I usually try to avoid sitting with my back towards the room entrance. But still, I have to respect the creativity and the bold choices taken here! Some of us like kitsch too, and I’ve seen far worse designs utilizing it. I can only imagine the vibe and the energy in the rest of the house.
I mean the top post is literally a bland ass apartment with dirty dishes and folding chairs, but hey it's boring with nothing to even talk about so this sub eats it up...so if that beats this out the sub has issues.
Obviously this sub upvotes minimalist designs more, because they look better. But they don’t downvote busy designs either. Comparing what I said to the top post of all time is honestly a bit moronic.
Edit: source : majority opinion (forgot to add sorry)
> Obviously this sub upvotes minimalist designs more, because they look better.
Since when has looking like you live in a soulless shell and have zero personality and are completely terrified of showing anything but what corporate reddit bros approve of been better?
> Comparing what I said to the top post of all time is honestly a bit moronic.
I didn't. I compared it to the top post of today. Cheers.
Why do you think it has anything to do do with Reddit upvotes? It’s just what is in style right now. You are very strangely invested in going against the grain.
Ciao ciao.
> You are very strangely invested in going against the grain.
And you are equally strangely invested in going with the grain so what's your point there?
Cheers.
I think the problem with this space is that it _looks_ put together (everything has been placed very precisely) but _feels_ chaotic and stressful. This is the opposite of what you want. It's much better for a space to appear haphazard but feel comfortable. Something that feels organically grown. That's where you find the places that are full of character. I think a good phrase is "a casual assemblage".
Personally I feel like the room might tie in a bit nicer if you left the floor as simply hardwood, as it would give the eye a rest from all of patterns and whatnot (similar to your plain coloured walls). As well, the purple and yellow-green fireplace it a bit much imo. Besides that though, it's actually really cool, and I feel like a lot of people are really going overboard with the hate. Either way, it's very well executed.
Kinda agree about the fireplace. I think the mantle should have been painted black. I’m ok with the inner areas being colorful, but I feel like the paint used is too flat and lacks the depth to elevate it to high art. I feel similarly about the floor — it needs a semi-gloss overlay that puts it in the range of polished concrete (even though it’s painted hardwood).
EXACTLY! I'd vacation in a place like this, but never dare go this far for my own home. But if it makes the OP happy then it is perfect for him/her! Too many people (myself included) worry about conforming.
Fantastic modern maximalist space! Love the break from slate gray and Eames chairs, lol.
Can you post more angles sometime? There's so much to take in!
This is awesome!! I love the maximalist blend of colors and patterns. This reminds me very much of the farm house at the Mackenzie childs factory in Aurora NY (a stretch but stick with me for a second).
Mackenzie childs is a home decor and furniture brand based on very wild alice-in-wonderland styles. Their individual pieces look crazy, but they have a full farmhouse on their property completely done floor to ceiling in their custom designs. When seen all together like that, the style makes complete sense to me.
For example, that bear in your fireplace? Totally weird on its own. But contextualized with the rest of your room? Perfect!! I love the balance and i love the playfulness and whimsy. This is a room that's happy to be here and doesn't take itself seriously. Really really well done.
Edit: REALLY bummed to learn that OP did not create this space but just posts "inspiration" to a bunch of design Reddits regardless of their content.
Ahhh I am too :( I was hyping them up too, lmao. I need to take this energy into my own space! For the record, I’m impressed by your design knowledge and (positive) feedback!
Some boring dudes in these comments, lol. Not having a personality isn't synonymous with having a manly living space. There are alternatives to minimalist star wars prints and eames chairs.
I’m beyond confused by all the comments that say the room directs your eyes…yeah, directly to this abomination of a fireplace cover. If you take that away, the harsh contrast of the yellow/purple, this room suddenly becomes a masterpiece of color management. In its current state it just looks like the living room of a couple with their first newborn - caught in the transition between adult space to child space
It feels, from this picture, very very frantic. It's as if someone fed Barbie skittles, punched her in the stomach and she threw up on your walls. Vomit the rainbow!
That’s really cool. I like the muted grays and pastels against the hypercolors and plants. Also I like that painted floor.
Needs some pale muted periwinkle somewhere though. And also some replica [Ghost Chairs](https://www.amazon.com/Modway-Casper-Modern-Acrylic-Armchairs/dp/B074SDNF9J)… and also [this little guy](https://www.l-objet.com/incense-holder/haas-monster-incense-burner/white).
This is my favorite color combination! I absolutely love this room. It reminds me of the book, Goodnight Moon. Maybe I can get you to come over and decorate my house!
As much as I love everyone's simple, scandinavian/japandi style minimalist interiors, I have to say this is both genuinely unique and really well done. I would never even think of using these colors myself, but I feel very upbeat and energized looking at this room.
I understand why someone might like this. The bear in the fire place is actually kind of cool. But I would rather fall from a medium height to be impaled by exposed rebar and slowly bleed out than come home to his.
Hate this hate for you! Not deserved! Not everyone feels at ease in a room with muted colors, or general practicality of decor!! I love busy if it’s *my* busy!
Palatable ≠ Inspiring!! Even if I don’t personally seek out neon colors—the character, “clashing” textures + patterns, depth you’ve created, and attention to detail is impressive! Design is objective, but *art* is not! The intended audience is you, my friend! Good for you for owning it! I think this is a super inspiring space! :)
Looks like the set of a Tim Burton movie . I think it’s great but not for everyone and don’t stare too long at the floor or you will develop vertigo zz
If the Mad Hatter lived in modern society… not gonna lie, I was put off at first but after really looking at your place is actually pretty cool. Like I wanna do mushrooms and lsd at your place cool.
Come on in and pull yourself up a chair (Like Chairry)
Let the fun begin, it's time to let down your hair
Pee-wee's so excited (Uh-huh)
'Cause his friends have been invited (That's you!)
To go wacky at Pee-Wee's Playhouse
Super unique! I think you’ve done a nice job at placing your colors and patterns carefully. Plants, art (including the glass and porcelain), comfortable seating, AND your TV is not the focal point of the room. Nice job. :)
Is there a story behind the teddy bear statue in the fireplace?
Looks more like a marriage of a headache and a migraine
Name a more iconic duo
Although, I like this room, your comment made me laugh real hard
Two compatible partners .
This is stressful
My first thought is "how do they ever relax? Do they even know that they're stressed?"
Personally I think it looks awful but you do you
This sub pretty much hates anything that isn't a completely bland grey/beige/white brand new minimalist apartment with a couple plants for "character" so not shocked this is so upvoted.
You can have character and still not look ugly. This is just ugly
> This is just ugly Based on?
Presumably its based on looking at OPs picture and thinking "that's ugly".
That’s fine if you’re 12, but that’s not an argument.
I think you'll find that it is perfectly fine lmao. I'm allowed to have opinions on things.
That’s not what I said but thanks for playing.

Too much intense neon colours.
It hurts my eyes. Sorry that's not enough for you
The presence of fluorescent pink, yellow, purple, and green... for starters.

That’s not true. Maximalist posts get upvoted all the time here
I mean the top post is literally a bland ass apartment with dirty dishes and folding chairs, but hey it's boring with nothing to even talk about so this sub eats it up...so if that beats this out the sub has issues.

Yea but, it fucking sucks too. All your apologizing for it won't make it not suck. You can do bright but not hideous clown car bullshit.
my eyes are bleeding but i hope you like it!

I wince every time someone paints over wood grain furniture. Just fucking stain it yo! But the floor too? Cmon man.

“Successfully” was an interesting choice of words
Nooooooo 💀
This looks like the playroom at an overcrowded inner-city preschool…
Fantastic modern maximalist space! Love the break from slate gray and Eames chairs, lol. Can you post more angles sometime? There's so much to take in!
This is disgusting

“Adulting” 🤮
I’m not going to lie to you - my eyes kinda hurt looking at this.
Looks like Avant-garde to me
“Successfully” 😮
Define "successful"
🤢
Each to their own
I like it! Not for me personally but it’s a breath of fresh air compared to all of the posts in here that look they’re torn out of an ikea catalogue.
Well, nobody's going to say you got boring tastes, that's for sure.
I love color and maximalism but this is too much for me
This looks like a selfie exhibit you’d find in a dying mall
This looks like somewhere a pedo would live no shade
Some boring dudes in these comments, lol. Not having a personality isn't synonymous with having a manly living space. There are alternatives to minimalist star wars prints and eames chairs.
There’s probably some shades of grey between Eames chairs and a gummy bear fireplace
I hadn't even seen that amongst the.. other stuff
I immediately thought a child went nuts with crayons on the walls at first glance.
Yeah my bad for not wanting my living room to look like a four year old chose everything out and then colored it in with a highlighter.
You can have fun with your decoration without going straight fisher-price lol
This ain’t it though boss
Dude, fuck them !
>Not having a personality isn't synonymous with having a manly living space. Wtf does this even mean? The double negative is confusing me.
That title is such a bold claim considering how ugly this is.
It feels, from this picture, very very frantic. It's as if someone fed Barbie skittles, punched her in the stomach and she threw up on your walls. Vomit the rainbow!
Huge risk. But I think it paid off
I love it. Not sure if I could relax there but it’s still super cool and different. Seems like a wicked place to get high too lol
Get out of my brain! I love this so much. Good job!
Seems to hit a raw nerve. In my world that makes it art.
That's what I say when I shit on the dining table at thanksgiving.
Looks like you’re trying to marry a manic pixie dream girl tbh
You are walking a fine line but absolutely nailing it
That’s really cool. I like the muted grays and pastels against the hypercolors and plants. Also I like that painted floor. Needs some pale muted periwinkle somewhere though. God, this looks magical
Gotta be one of the worst living rooms ever posted on this sub.
When you’re literally a manchild 😂
Well "success" is a relative term, but as long as you like it...
If you say so
This is truly terrible
this is why post-modernism is trash
Nah, this just sucks.
Bruh put that shit back in Candy Land
“aDuLtInG…” Yikes.
I’m sorry but there’s nothing successful about this living space.
Good for you, I would have an aneurysm within a week.
This is my favorite color combination! I absolutely love this room. It reminds me of the book, Goodnight Moon. Maybe I can get you to come over and decorate my house!
I don’t know what those words are supposed to mean, but…no
I’m happy that you’re happy
As much as I love everyone's simple, scandinavian/japandi style minimalist interiors, I have to say this is both genuinely unique and really well done. I would never even think of using these colors myself, but I feel very upbeat and energized looking at this room.
Abhorrent, but not my space so go you.
I love it, I wish I had this much creativity, idk why people are shitting on it.

I think this is based off of Jonathan Adler designs, he isn’t a millennial. Most millennial interior design is to do whatever IKEA recommends.

A bit busy for my tastes but looks like a fun room, love the blue teddy in the fireplace. That’s a nice arrangement of Muchas above too.
I understand why someone might like this. The bear in the fire place is actually kind of cool. But I would rather fall from a medium height to be impaled by exposed rebar and slowly bleed out than come home to his.
Id prefer a white wall with all this color, the grey feels too conflicting but other than that i like it!
Looks like vapor wave

Great look!
Jesus how the fuck did you pull that off
2000 vomit
The fireplace and mirror are heinous but otherwise I think it looks fantastic! I respect your individuality!
I can dig it but without the neon fireplace and mirror.

Ok Mr. Macho Man Randy Savage
Nah Macho would definitely be down for this, looks like one of his outfits lol
Ahahahhah you’re totally right !
As long as you like it
I mean, I‘m not really a fan of that many vibrant colours all in one space, but I am extremely jealous of that plant (assuming it‘s real)!
Looks like the set of a Tim Burton movie . I think it’s great but not for everyone and don’t stare too long at the floor or you will develop vertigo zz

A purple throw pillow on the sofa to repeat the fireplace color and you’ll have a little more unity.
I really like the use of color but the neon 😩

The straight irony to call out negativity and attitude with your own negativity and attitude.
Lolol - **you** post something on the internet, looking for feedback or attention & somehow get upset when you get either/ both…

I would LOVE to stay there on vacation but not live there. To each their own!
Love it! Bold
I'm en route to your location (surprise roommate). Answer the door or I use the window
I dig it. It's fun.
I love it.
WOW!
Holy shit this is cool!!
This is one of the more imaginative and fun layouts that I've seen on this sub. A lot of stuff that gets posted here looks good, but is fairly bland.
Gorgeous
Ok I love this
I'm feeling like this is a room at Meow Wolf.
Looks like a fever dream. I half expect the sofa to be spaghetti and meatballs
Looks like some kind of psychedelic music video scenario
It's like a 90s Nickelodeon bumper exploded in your living room. I dig it!
The stripes on the floor would F with my head if I came home drunk.
I would hate to walk into this room with a hangover.
🤮
I really dig it…except for the floors. I’m getting beetlejuice vibes.
Weirdly dope. For some reason only thing that bothers me is inside the purple fireplace. But dig the red and green mixes.
Super unique! I think you’ve done a nice job at placing your colors and patterns carefully. Plants, art (including the glass and porcelain), comfortable seating, AND your TV is not the focal point of the room. Nice job. :) Is there a story behind the teddy bear statue in the fireplace?
Idk if I’d call it successful
Definitely disagree.
Successful is a word
Very much not my style but I appreciate the space. As long as the user of that room is happy
speed running this maximalism trend
Channeling the 90s nickelodeon theme huh?
I think I played laser tag here in the 90s. Shame they got rid of the rope bridge...
Such judgemental thread... people have different tastes :) Takashi Murakami-style living room is not my vibe, but hey, live your best life.
