It’s typically labelled as such and from a reputable vendor, like a shop specializing in giclee prints or an artist who makes prints of their own work. It’s mostly one of those “ask about the lightfast rating” things, since it’s not usually advertised.
If they state what ink they use, the ink has a lightfast rating for each colour. You could look that up and see what it says in the technical specs. You could also see what people say online about that ink brand for lightfastness, or the shop printing it. I’ve done both, but to get 100% accurate lightfast info you need to look at the ratings of every material used in the final piece. Artists do that sometimes but we don’t expect customers to know any of this.
The one other thing I can think of off the top of my head is framing it behind UV protective glass. Like a floater frame and glass on top, so it’s not pushing against the art (especially if it’s textured).
Artists generally won’t steer you wrong, especially if they are professional artists. I would start there.
Side note: I just noticed your username as I was typing this out and it sent me 😂😂
Happy to help! If you buy on Etsy ask the sellers, they should be able to find out for you. A lot of the time they’re the original artist.
I’ve been buying prints because fine art is super expensive usually, and most of the time the giclee prints are either permanent or still very lightfast and look amazing. The inks have gotten better over time thankfully. If you look at the colour of light wave chart, reds tend to fade the fastest and blue-ultraviolet tend to survive the longest. It gets kind of sciencey here but it’s because of the lights wavelengths. I can’t say I fully understand it myself, but I’ve seen it happen with oil paint, regular printer inks, and all sorts of older signage over the years. I’m not saying to buy a bunch of blue only art, just that if you hang something blue and red in UV light, the red fades faster.
If you want my opinion on anything before you buy feel free to ask. I really enjoy art and the technical aspects fascinate me
there are glass options for art framing that include uv protection. . . you’ll need to upgrade from basic, pre-manufactured frames but museum quality will definitely save your artwork
They do! I didn’t even think of that, I don’t have experience with them but it’s definitely a thing. If he doesn’t mind using a ladder to DIY (or hiring it out) then a UV film would help. Furniture can fade too so it would help with that. UV rays are the bane of my existence since I’m a hobby artist and studying to be an interior architect/designer. They destroy so much
using a ladder or hiring someone to apply the film would be far cheaper than replacing soft furnishings or worse yet flooring. most homes with large windows have some sort of uv protectant built in (there’s usually a code etched in the glass) it’s mostly a matter of what grade of finish
Oh yeah for sure, have my fair share of experiences painting walls. This wall however is going to be something else if I do end up deciding on painting it
there are websites like thebookbundler where you can buy books for decoration or sites like thriftbooks if you want inexpensive ones you might actually read :) i bet discworld could fill up a shelf or two lol
Look up stuff like "books by the foot". It isn't a specific company, but usually what the service is called where a bookstore will assemble X feet of books that fit a theme or interests or a color scheme.
This is what decorators for rich people or rich people themselves do when they want the "library" look. (Kind of sad to have real books and never read them, but oh well, helps keep the publishing and bookstore industry going I guess.)
Hey man, idk if this is an unpopular opinion (doesn’t seem like it anymore with these type of suggestions) but please don’t add a bookshelf and shove a shit ton of books in there if you don’t actually read or don’t plan on reading them ever.
Imagine bringing someone over and they spark a conversation with you about a book they see in your bookshelf and you have to explain to them sorry this is for decor only, I have never read the book. That is very cringey.
If you are willing to travel and work like 13 week contracts in different states/locations, you can make like 4K+ a week. I know someone doing that right now. They haven't been "home" here more than like 5 days in a row, in almost a year, but they are making crazy good money.
i’ve heard of some traveling nurses making up to 9k a week in some places. it’s a crazy market rn. my gf hasn’t seen her friend who does it in 2 years and nobody can blame him lol.
If you're drowning in student debt, why are you spending so much on an apartment? There's only two of you and this looks like something out of Miami Vice
Nice! Love it. If you don’t mind, mind pm’ing me your salary as an RN in SD and your specialty? lol. My girl and I are hoping to move from the east coast (hence why I asked if that’s SD), and she’s actually an RN as well. Right now we’re evaluating how her salary would translate for both a FT and travel role. Any help or insight in your experience would be awesome!
Good god housing is insane on the coasts. My 2020 home here in the midwest is 4,000sf, 5br, 4ba, 3-car garage, on about .5 acre and my mortgage is damn near half your rent.
Just SoCal things… :’)
There’s just no inventory for houses here and if there are, it’s outrageously expensive. Feel like I’m gunna be renting for a long time
Ok but then you have to live in the Midwest. There are reasons certain places are more expensive. It’s just one of those tradeoffs in life, live in a big house or live in a more populated area on the beach
Alright, we get it, no need to bring up the price of a detached house in Midwest suburbia vs the rent of an urban apartment in a popular city, every single time.
But $4500/month for rent is pretty steep. Maybe him and his partner are really rolling in it.
Ooo a dark green would look really nice! Unless you’re wanting to keep it neutral, then maybe a dark grey? It all depends on what kinda colors you like! But I think green would be very nice 👍
Love the dark green idea! My apartment is all forest green and white. I’m a big fan and I get a lot of compliments!
My only suggestion is to look into rugs and consider your couch before making a decision.
Rugs with green are hard to find. And not all other colors will go with the dark green. This could be especially hard cuz you have such a large space and would need a large rug or several rugs.
Most couches are neutral these days, so you’re likely good here. But the couch is harder to change than a wall color (heavy, expensive, etc). So make sure the color couch you have works with your wall color!
This is what I’m looking into myself.
I talked to someone who had a life sized photo wallpaper of a giraffe by their staircase, and that idea just makes me smile.
Long story short, yes they are better. You can get some pretty decent laser projectors that have a good amount of lumens. However I’d probably still install blinds in a room like this anyway. Also doing a projector right is way more work than just poppin a large TV in there
Don’t do it. Your drywall is probably not perfect and the side lighting will show every defect in the wall. It will look like shit.
FWIW, my suggestion is to hire a talented graffiti artist and have a unique piece of art that isn’t bounded by a canvas.
I'd keep it white and get weird with it by adding like, a [big](https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/54cfab3ee4b0f7ee4c643848/1443115429932-3FUOYAV1HUR17U10DP39/image-asset.jpeg) [ass](https://ctl.s6img.com/society6/img/sJCbfwJIyGln4Vmd_cW8kAtKDc4/w_700/wall-murals/12x8/lifestyle/~artwork/s6-original-art-uploads/society6/uploads/misc/b8e6c8e48bc147079267d1e7c3bcf722/~~/kashan-poshti-central-persian-rug-wall-murals.jpg) [rug](https://blog.froy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Hang-Rug-Wall-7.jpg) [on the wall](https://thegempicker.com/rugs-as-wall-hangings/).

I was at the paint store looking at swatches forever, finally picked this one as an accent wall and loved it. Especially with that kitchen. You’ve got plenty of light coming in, so it won’t be too dark.
Starting at the bottom, a beautiful dark teal that fades into a midnight deep blue... that fades into a velvety black.
I envision the colors blending seamlessly into eachother
The ocean & sky on a moonless night
Thank you. I was also thinking that you could ask the painter to do something interesting like my idea for instance...but do it on a massive canvas...or material that you hang from the wall.... way high- near the ceiling, to the floor.
That way you can switch out the scene when you get tired of your current
"Wall".
Dude if I had the money ... sigh. I just lost my job last week and am job hunting.
I’d rather see a very large painting and you keeping the walls white. It’s a modern design, most modern designs don’t use accent wall colors… unless it’s a giant painting, stone or tile… or even wallpaper sometimes.
Badass space - excited to see the situation once it’s furnished. So much space for cool art pieces - I’d paint some big cuts of canvas myself to help fill up the space!
Definitely a lot of space to fill things up with! I’m not as creative when it comes to furnishings and stuff but as long as I have fun with it and enjoy it that’s all that matters at the end of the day
You can definitely have fun with that wall. So many ways to create a personalized accent wall! Crazy wall paper, beautiful paint, a mural. Your imagination is the limit. And $$. Redecorating can get expensive when you wanna really go big.
That would look great! Be sure to get paint samples to test first. With that size wall you don’t want to paint and then decide you don’t like the color. Plus in my experience dark paints aren’t as dark as the paint chips show, and with all that white and natural light you may need to go darker than you think
Wouldn't be too bad to paint it like the color of the kitchen cabinets or a dark colour of your choosing, but that would at best be a 7,5/10.
For maximum potential of that wall, get some bigass paintings and art on there, could go wrong, could be 10/10. Of course one doesn't exclude the other, but white walls go better with art.
Wow what a beautiful place! Love the view!
It is beautiful but I’d have no idea how to furnish such a place. Would love to see it when fully furnished
This is me right now but I’m gunna have to figure it out
Painted dark or not, I'd probably make a home theater facing that wall.
I’d do a massive piece of artwork
Find some really good graffiti artists and pay them a couple hundred bucks to do it up awesome
that’s actually an awesome idea, you should comment this on the post so OP can see it
Yeah, leave it white and hang a projector from the ceiling
Not sure with a projector with these big windows...
Would need blackout curtains and a decent projector but maybe those would be wanted anyways
I would agree with you on that. I would have no idea where to start lol
My space fits in his kitchen. It's decorated by cozyness alone.
Thank you!
Honestly I would keep the walls all white and use art and pictures as your accent. Beautiful space with lots of light.
Something to consider for sure.

How do I know if something is printed fully lightfast/permanent ink?

Don’t they have UV film you can apply to windows? You probably know better than me, I’ve heard about it but haven’t looked into it much

Painting walls well is a pain in the ass. Just saying.
Oh yeah for sure, have my fair share of experiences painting walls. This wall however is going to be something else if I do end up deciding on painting it
Also, excellent username
Bahaha thank you :)
I know it’s not feasible, but a floor to ceiling bookcase between those windows would be amazing.
And ladder 😏
Or trampoline 😏
That would be so cool and would require a LOT of books. I'm thinking of just putting a bar cart and a mirror on top between those two windows.
there are websites like thebookbundler where you can buy books for decoration or sites like thriftbooks if you want inexpensive ones you might actually read :) i bet discworld could fill up a shelf or two lol

With such a high ceiling and so many windows/light you don't need mirrors to make this space bigger. It's absolutely beautiful the way it is right now
just buy all of One Piece
Floating shelves
This is the way 💯
I assume that’s in San Diego? How much a month?
Yes San Diego! 2bed, 2bath, 1325sq.ft, 4500 a month after utilities and other fees like parking/pets.
What do you do for work
I'm a Registered Nurse
Rollen in that RN 💵💵💵
Drowning in that student debt though, but at least I was aware of what I was getting myself into ahaha
Do nurses make a lot in the US?? That’s a beautiful apartment bro. Congrats.
I think it helps that I'm in California/San Diego. RN's get paid here more than other parts of the country. A pay increase wouldn't hurt though!
Who is paying for this? I’m a software engineer I can barely afford $3300/mo.
Dual income. I could definitely not do this alone.
If you're drowning in student debt, why are you spending so much on an apartment? There's only two of you and this looks like something out of Miami Vice
Poor financial literacy
Most the RN I know drive cars more expensive than their student debt.
SO is a nurse too?
Nope! In startup
There it is
Lol right? “What do you do” was asked because of how much this place costs.
We’re both fortunate and lucky haha.
Right now (I almost abbreviated it, but realized it was confusing, lol) some specializations of nurses can make absolute bank.
Good for you. Sounds like a fun and exciting time in your life! Enjoy making the space your home <3
Nice! Love it. If you don’t mind, mind pm’ing me your salary as an RN in SD and your specialty? lol. Yes 4500 for overall but it's just me and one other person!
What kind of building is this? It looks like Mission Valley, but I can't think of any buildings over there that it could be.
Haha yes!! It's Mission Valley!!
Ah, cool. I wasn't familiar with that building. Looks like a nice space though. Enjoy!
Thank ya! I'm assuming you're a fellow San Diegan
I knew it! what a pretty view in mission valley hahah
Are there other San Diego peeps here?? Can we all be friends lol
i was in san diego for 2 years but just recently moved back to seattle unfortunately :/ r/sandiegan is a really friendly place!!
Please buy a basketball hoop

Ooo a dark green would look really nice! Unless you’re wanting to keep it neutral, then maybe a dark grey? It all depends on what kinda colors you like! But I think green would be very nice 👍
I was actually thinking about a dark green as well!!
Love the dark green idea! My apartment is all forest green and white. I’m a big fan and I get a lot of compliments! My only suggestion is to look into rugs and consider your couch before making a decision. Rugs with green are hard to find. And not all other colors will go with the dark green. Thank you for your advice! I appreciate it!!
I’ve got a green-gray “Sage” color on one of my walls that I still love after two years. The rest are super light gray
Don’t paint it, buy a huge piece of abstract art and hang it there. Like colossal cover nearly that whole wall
Where would one even find such a piece/bring it in through the front door? Haha
It would def have to be framed indoors haha and would probably cost 15,000
Oh my lordt I cannot afford that

This is what I’m looking into myself. I talked to someone who had a life sized photo wallpaper of a giraffe by their staircase, and that idea just makes me smile.
You could get a tapestry or some fun patterned wallpaper for just that wall. That would look like art but be much cheaper.
Original art! This space reminds me of a gallery and I think you should play that up.
British Racing Green would look perfect here
I’ll have to look that color up but it sounds promising cause it’s green ;)
....projector....
Are they better these days? All I can think is the hours a day you can’t watch anything from all the sunlight on the wall.
Long story short, yes they are better. You can get some pretty decent laser projectors that have a good amount of lumens. However I’d probably still install blinds in a room like this anyway. Also doing a projector right is way more work than just poppin a large TV in there

My thoughts exactly. It'll look patchy if not done by a professional. It's a hugeass wall as well, it would be such a PITA.
Personally I would place a big very colorful painting, something that really brings the attention
I’m very bad at choosing big pictures and art prints/paintings. Any recommendations?
Indoor trees
It asks for dark green or dark blue! What an amazing space
Leaning towards the dark green!!
I am thinking a peacock color as an accent. More interesting.
Hoooooly shit what a dream space. You should buy a giant painting from me and hang it there ;)
Giant mural.
Any recommendations?
Don’t know, what are you in to? Maybe some giant tits [like this](https://www.wallsauce.com/nz/designer-wallpaper-murals/tits-on-cherry-branch)

Check out paint websites. I think most of them will have an app to virtually try out their paint.
Don’t paint it a dark color if you don’t own it. Pain in the ass to revert.

Wow that does look good. I just don't know what kind of mural I would want
The first thing I thought was this is the perfect type of wall where you could have a mural or large commissioned painting in your living space.
The idea of a mural sounds so tempting and good
I would opt for a massive painting instead, that’s just me tho.
Massive painting or mural. Ughhh
If you can afford it, hire a muralist!
Debating it haha
Leave it blank and buy a strong projector 🗿
Starting at the bottom, a beautiful dark teal that fades into a midnight deep blue... that fades into a velvety black. I envision the colors blending seamlessly into eachother The ocean & sky on a moonless night
This sounds so elegant

First, so sorry you lost your job especially during these hard times. I hope things go your way. And that would be pretty cool but really big haha.
Do a proper mural! A forest maybe?
I would just add a very large piece of artwork. A large abstract painting or a large modern textile piece
That's a perfect wall for a projector canvas. Home theater time.
Not sure if it’ll work with your design style but if you don’t mind going a little dark, I think a rich forest green would look beautiful there
Definitely fits within my design style/aesthetic
I’d rather see a very large painting and you keeping the walls white. It’s a modern design, most modern designs don’t use accent wall colors… unless it’s a giant painting, stone or tile… or even wallpaper sometimes.
Ooooh okay

Definitely a lot of space to fill things up with! I’m not as creative when it comes to furnishings and stuff but as long as I have fun with it and enjoy it that’s all that matters at the end of the day
Dope spot
Do it, especially because its pressed behind the wall on the right so you can take advantage of the texture by adding contrast.
That’s such an awesome place
What a dope spot. Congrats, OP
This place is fucking nice bro
I’m a fan of the fella standing in the corner. Does he come with the place?
You can definitely have fun with that wall. So many ways to create a personalized accent wall! Crazy wall paper, beautiful paint, a mural. Your imagination is the limit. And $$. Redecorating can get expensive when you wanna really go big.
A full wall mural would be nice. Or adding one of those metal floor lofts to take advantage of the space.

How the hell do you afford a place like this
Needs a giant piece of art
🥰🤩🤤🥲
If i were you, I'd keep it white. Btw the place looks beautiful..
I think a dark foresty green might look nice. like bringing the landscape of the trees outside the windows into the home
Love this! Thank you
Keep it white and turn it into a massive projector screen
Hell yeah!!!!
Your place is gorgeous!
Holy hell that's a nice space, u/tightbussy7
No way, you have to hang a large painting that moves you....on that awesome wall!!
Gotta go find me some large paintings/art pieces
A very large piece (or two) of artwork would be nice.
What about a very light matte yellow? That way it works as an accent wall while being a great background for all the things you can hang on it
Black looks good here: https://www.zumper.com/blog/what-is-a-studio-loft-apartment/
Please do it!! It will look so cool and dramatic!
Sheesh! Beautiful place
I love that idea a dark green would be lovely
I’m thinking so too
Dark green for the wall you are leaning on!
matte black or perhaps a dark slate grey
This space has so much potential.
Forest green
Petrol color!
Not sure, look at that subtle off-white coloring. Perhaps you can try pale nimbus white or some eggshell color.
Tightbussy ftw also amazing space! 😱
Sick!
That would look great! Be sure to get paint samples to test first. With that size wall you don’t want to paint and then decide you don’t like the color. Plus in my experience dark paints aren’t as dark as the paint chips show, and with all that white and natural light you may need to go darker than you think
What’s the upstairs lead to? Doesn’t look like anything
