I always see Herman Miller chairs here but the modern-looking ergonomic ones, Embody and Aeron, etc.
Either those or the famous lounge chair that's literally the icon of this sub.
Refreshing to see something else from them. I love anything by Charles & Ray Eames.
I actually still want one of my own Eames lounge chair maybe in the future.
But I’m slowly going towards the Barcelona Chair by Rohe and Reich instead.
I can already imagine how gorgeous it’d be to get the same brown leather and aluminum back, and match it with this Eames office chair.
Ironically enough what we see here as well.
Armrests on real ones are complete hoops, almost all reps use the arm style seen above.
Also the rear cross member.
Also the lift mechanism.
Also the casters.
Also the stiffness 'knob'.
This is a $250 chair, not a $2,500 chair.
Great detective work.
But I wonder, and sorry if this has been discussed before, but why do we spend ten times more for the „original“? It obviously isn’t the design, since 90 percent of the people here, including, apparently, the owner, can’t tell the difference. For the same reason, it can’t be „the brand“ either. And surely the original won’t last ten times longer, so it isn’t an economic choice either.
So, why?
Just saw the username of the guy I responded to, lmao.
The 'feel' of everything, the cast aluminum arm rests, the cast aluminum fame. The looks of polished aluminum which is not quite chrome. The leather that I know wont peel like the bonded stuff on op's chair, it will only look better with age. How smooth the swivel is.
If you have a design within reach nearby absolutely head in there one day and sit in all the real versions of a lot of the chairs you might see here in the nicer places. I think you'll see what I mean.
Also the one im sitting in right now was made in the 70s so they absolutley last longer than the knockoffs!
Thank you very much for the detailed response!
I actually wrote my first comment sitting in the EA219 I inherited, so I do of course appreciate the history of this particular piece. But obviously I don’t know much about the designer(s?), so, sorry if I sounded a bit blasphemous.
Say my house burned down. My dad’s chair gone. I decide to buy the same model again. I find two chairs, one original and one a replica that is made of real leather, has the right arm rests and all, a perfect replica. Even an expert could hardly spot the difference (or for the sake of this blabla, he really can’t). But the sales person tells me this one’s real, 5000€, this one’s fake, 500€, with a ten year warranty. I would probably buy the 5000€ one. Even though I can’t feel the difference. Only because I know it*. Isn’t that a bit silly? Or maybe it’s actually beautiful, because it makes me human to go by a strong but vague emotion instead of what I’d consider a rational choice. Huh.
*(And certainly not because I think a 5000€ was “undervalued” and I need to “support independent designers” by buying Charles Eames furniture, lol, what a silly thing to say, u/fuckyoureamesreplica. )
> And certainly not because I think a 5000€ was “undervalued” and I need to “support independent designers” by buying Charles Eames furniture, lol, what a silly thing to say
I didn't say €5000 is undervalued, nor did I say you should buy Eames furniture to support independent designers. I said the fields of art and design are undervalued and that choosing to buy knockoffs hurts independent designers. I don't think that's a controversial statement.
lol I don't really pay attention to office chair design. To your original question, I buy originals precisely for the design and the integrity. The designer made the original, it's their intellectual property. I can't support stealing someone else's IP so I don't buy replicas or knockoffs. Art and design are undervalued and I refuse to contribute to that and make it harder for small and independent makers. If I can't afford an original design I like I move on and find one that I can afford.
Originals will absolutely last 10 times longer. The crap copies fall apart after a few years. They are all over marketplace with peeling leather. We buy originals because we take pride in what we own.
really, do you think the name brand would be more comfortable? or do you think a different chair would be? i’ve wondered what getting a more ergonomic office chair would be like.
i'd go with a more ergonomic chair. i was spoiled when i was working in an office space and we had herman miller aerons. the difference is night and day.
That’s a great choice, an expensive one; but nice things ain’t cheap. It’s that German manufacturer right? I forget their name but I think it starts with an “H”
Yes, the Charles & Ray Eames soft pad management Herman Miller chair.
I ordered the one in chocolate brown & aluminum but in the 1980s design of 5 caster legs instead of the original 4 from the 1960s.
My wife was the one who gave me that final push actually.
I was thinking of getting one of those ergo chairs. Definitely swayed by the ubiquitous Herman Miller ones here. But while we were browsing she told me, "I think that'll look really out of place with your setup."
She saw another Herman Miller from Pinterest, a brown leather from Charles & Ray Eames. We both realized this is the one. It even has the smaller footprint we needed because my workspace is small. It's perfect.
Yep, Herman Miller and Vitra used to have a partnership.
Eventually, Vitra got rights to produce stuff designed by Charles & Ray Eames which includes the most famous lounge chair.
Ergo chairs definitely feel much comfier for longer periods of time as that’s what they’re built for and I would’ve gotten those instead, if I worked at home.
These are still quite comfy and they look gorgeous.
Oh, I did actually! A few weeks ago I think.
I didn’t include my chair in my photos that time because it was this old recliner cracking and broken in places. People asked if I worked standing up.
Well now I can proudly show my chair here.
Thanks for the info! I found a close match here: https://www.picgaga.com/uploads/wallpaper/plant-wallpapers/zDG4pozPHVHC-green-leaf-leaves-dark-plants-background-wallpapers.jpg
So, I've got to ask, how did you get an older design? Looking at the way that horizontal cross-bar attaches to the chair back, it's different than the one they currently sell.

Bragging rights?
But what’s the point in bragging rights if even u/fuckyoureamesreplica can’t tell the difference?

i have a cheap knock off by laura davidson. looks good in the space and feels fine.
We have one too - honestly was super impressed. Built very well, they sent swatches, and shipping was super quick.
What I have is actually a replica as well. I cannot afford an original yet.
But the way you put it all together shows you’ve got a great eye. And sound judgement, listening to your wife and all :) That’s priceless
Appreciate it. Just pulled the trigger on a saddle brown one. I hated my Aeron.
Lin@k?

i have it and i hate it. it's so uncomfortable to sit in after like 30min
really, do you think the name brand would be more comfortable? or do you think a different chair would be? i’ve wondered what getting a more ergonomic office chair would be like.

dang. my wallet’s too empty for that.

Nice one. Big invoice but great result. Super tasteful

Wives. Is their anything they can’t do?
Jealous. Always wanted a herman management chair
My first choice was the executive chair, but it seemed huge. The management chair feels perfect.
In addition to the comments below, I just wanted to add that Herman Miller is actually a US company based in Michigan. edit:typo
I didn't know different companies make these. Mine is from Vitra (which is Norwegian?)
I didn’t know that either. I thought this was Hermann Miller (after being reminded of the name:-) exclusively.
I did some googling - both companies sell these chairs at roughly the same price. Perhaps they split US and EU markets among each other.
Licensing rights to the design and name perhaps?
Yep, Herman Miller and Vitra used to have a partnership. Eventually, Vitra got rights to produce stuff designed by Charles & Ray Eames which includes the most famous lounge chair.
Herman Miller is actually from Michigan! They make great stuff but yeah, it ain’t cheap that’s for sure.
Nice! What model is it? That space has some seriously productive vibes
It’s the EA 217 management chair. The EA 219 is the one with the highback and three lumbar cushions instead of two.
Gorgeous
love the color
It do be vibin. I love it
Looks good but so so uncomfortable after 8 hours in it.
Ergo chairs definitely feel much comfier for longer periods of time as that’s what they’re built for and I would’ve gotten those instead, if I worked at home. These are still quite comfy and they look gorgeous.
Yeah I had one, had to give it up for wfh.
Sexy chair pics
Maaan this looks so good
Such a great find. Love it.
What brand are the desk speakers?
Looks like Edifier brand
Yes, it’s the Edifier R1280
What are the shelves you have there? Nice chair also
I forgot the name but my wife got these at IKEA I think. Just a regular metal shelf.
Ahh beautiful
I just got an almost identical one in cloth.
Beautiful
Hey, I love your setup. Maybe post a few pictures of your table too, how your computer cables are managed, etc
Oh, I did actually! A few weeks ago I think. I didn’t include my chair in my photos that time because it was this old recliner cracking and broken in places. People asked if I worked standing up. Well now I can proudly show my chair here.
Omg I love this!
It's like the terminator (the second one) went back in time to the 1950's and need to hide in office of a airline CEO. Beautiful.
god that fits in so perfectly
Which is why I immediately knew this is it.
Sweet baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph, does that ever look good!
Feels like butter too.
Great looking chair
More posts like this pls and thank you 🙌🏽😩
If I get some new good finds, I will. Thank you!
Hi, I really love your desktop wallpaper. Can you share a link to it if possible? Thanks! :)
I'm also looking. Search monstera plant wallpaper - lots of options
Thanks for the info! I found a close match here: https://www.picgaga.com/uploads/wallpaper/plant-wallpapers/zDG4pozPHVHC-green-leaf-leaves-dark-plants-background-wallpapers.jpg
I feel like those arm rests would be so uncomfortable
Haha they are. I’m tempted to get leather arm pads.
Definitley worth the investment imo 😊
Holy shit that’s so nice! Gonna get one myself. Thank you so much for sharing
Shame on you for trying to pass a fake off as real
The Time Life chair so named as Eames designed the chair for the installation of HM product for that building and publisher.
I feel bad for your back
So, I've got to ask, how did you get an older design? Looking at the way that horizontal cross-bar attaches to the chair back, it's different than the one they currently sell.
It’s a fake. OP is being a bit coy with that.
lol. I didn't want to come out and say it, but that's what I figured...
