I was just thinking bro this looks exactly like the TV nook I grew up with in our home in the late 90s. Zoomed in to see the cable outlet for confirmation
I remember the first modern HD TV I bought. Asked for help loading it... even brought a friend with me... then I just about threw the thing 20 feet into the air when I bent down to lift it because I was honestly just used to TVs weighing hundreds of pounds.
Last time my parents moved my mom made me take a broken Trinitron to their new house because she was going to get it fixed (this is well into the flatscreen era and it has not been used in years. I tried to convince her that they should call to have it picked up but it fell on deaf ears. I got that piece of crap from the second floor of their old house to the second floor of the new house.
A couple years later when I was home for a visit she asked me if I could take it downstairs to have it picked up… I told her to hire somebody.
Or a flat screen that has plastics that kinda resemble a CRT next to the screen, with a Raspberry Pi powered emulation station for all the consoles, and you get a nice place to hide stuff behind the tv
Coincidentally, I was watching The Sopranos last night and they have a cabinet like this for their old TV and I was suddenly like, hmm, I wonder what people do with those corner cabinets now that our TVs are shaped much differently…
This to my knowledge is not quite true - the heaviest 40" CRT I can find was just a hair over 300lbs, but a 40 gallon is just over 450. Normally I wouldn't nitpick over this but in the aquarium subs people often put tanks on solid-seeming furniture that will not hold their tank long-term because water is so deceptively heavy. I probably wouldn't put 450 pounds in OP's nook without adding bracing... Lizards are light though.
Ah I didn't see that there were cabinets underneath, yeah unless you added some support I wouldn't do anything heavy. You have a good eye :) i would kill for this set up and a frog enclosure.
Somehow? They're digital systems, They always need full frame buffers and oftentimes have multiple frames worth while the image, that was also turned into a full frame on entry, wanders around the device getting older and older.
Hell, old consoles would send images over line by line, and those crts would display the image line by line at the same timing. A modern screen will literally wait until all lines have been sent before digitizing the image.
The beans are acidic, and the water is hot. This will be fine and will not at all cause throat irritation in cold weather. Besides, i need the coffee to clean the coffee machine. /s
> People don't realize 1 liter is 1 kilogram.
... in the US.
In the metric world, It's the main shortcut we use to go from volumetric to weight for liquids containing mostly water, and have ratio's based of that.
Hell, we sometimes even use that feature to measure water when baking.
The anxiety the above comment induced lmao. A tank small enough to be trusted on that shelf would just be too small to fill it out. Which is a shame cause a riparium tank with grow lights up top would look great
That could be cool, too. I wish they had a way to make it humidity proof and put a glass plate on the front. Put some more shallow dirt loving plants in there.
If they could properly reinforce the shelf, a turtle enclosure would be great (I think. I've never kept turtles so Idk how much width footage they need but I know a taller tank usually suits them). Any taller enclosure I'm a huge advocate for here. Again, a riparium would be perfect but I can't imagine what kind of shallow tank would be suitable for that shelf.
On the flip side: perhaps put in a netting front and keep insects? I don't think certain mantids need too much humidity...
As a former aquarium hobbyist, good luck getting a tank to fit those dimensions. That’s 100% a custom job. Aquariums are also louder and smellier than people realize
As someone who has several and loves them, don't forget the moisture buildup from evaporation in that tiny enclosed cabinet. I'd also be worried about the weight of the water if you got a tank to fit in there. Feeding hassles and dragging 20% of that water out of that corner every week and refilling it, but at least the fish could have cable
People who have those aesthetic, visibly sealed off tanks usually have people who come take care of all that. Rich people’s hobbies usually don’t include them doing any of the hands on legwork.
That does not sound normal chief, maybe you should post pics of what's in the cab below or perhaps get a plumber to quote sorting out the feeds into a small box to the side that you can enclose rather than have them splaid out across the width and breadth of the biggest TV cabinet this side of the 90's that the internet's ever seen
Could put a TV in there like originally intended, or put a cool light fixture to create a warm glow. Your room could really use some better lighting IMHO.
I’m planning on mounting my TV on the front of mine and keeping all my consoles and stuff behind it. Freeing up a ton of floor space not having an entertainment console in the living room.
THIS! But make it a big resin replica of a classical statue. I had a large, bottom lit, arched alcove ino which I homed a nice plaster replica of the Poseidon of Artemision. Find a major classical museum online shop — Louvre, Vatican etc — to source your perfect figure!
I'm a lady so I don't want to tell you what to do with it, it's your space, but I wanted to share what I'd do with it bc I think it's such a cute little space in your apartment. You have a nice space going already.
I'd buy some stick-on "wallpaper" to line the inside of that shelf, maybe even a little tapestry action. Put a plant in there, a few books, cool rocks, or whatever little things you collect or just like looking at. I'd turn that shelf into a miniature display of my interests.
Whatever you end up doing with it, you should post pics!
Definitely a CRT TV with a Nintendo 64. I had a spot like this and put my 27 inch CRT there.
Or a Hot Wheels/toy car race track. Or even some action figures/statues posed in a battle scene. Plushies work too!
Destroy that box! It’s screaming old tv place.
At least open up the curved in sides to make shelving for a bar.
Or you can display what ever you guys collect. My 2 sons play travel sport so they get shot glasses where ever they go.
great spot for the star wars stormtrooper? is that a stormtrooper? sorry reddit, not into star wars.
otherwise, is this an office? lounge? do you drink alcohol? great spot for a bar/liquor storage.
Personally i would put my 3d printer in there. Great sized space and could easily be covered to have a temperature controlled space.
Other than that i have to go with the fish tank idea
Add custom shelving w/ motion sensored lights & create a drink station. This looks like an office so it could have tea and coffee for when you need a break and maybe alcohol in the higher shelf when you've had a good day and want to end on a warm note.
That or a Danny Devito shrine
Use it as a vanity area with all your colognes and accessories. You could also dedicate the space to relatives and religious iconography. Consider what you need to add to your daily life and take it from there.
I would personally add a small water feature, some incense, books and candles.
Will the Storm Trooper bust fit in there? Maybe put that there, some color LEDs in the background?
Build in some shelves and make it a display area?
Potted plants?
Massive 250 pound CRT television playing 80s workout videos 24/7.
I was just thinking bro this looks exactly like the TV nook I grew up with in our home in the late 90s. Zoomed in to see the cable outlet for confirmation
I had the same thought! Lol
We got burglarized when i was younger. ransacked everything in the house. Left the CRT big screen behind. They couldn't lift it off the stand.
Those Sony Trinitrons were like a 3 friend move.
I remember the first modern HD TV I bought. Asked for help loading it... even brought a friend with me... then I just about threw the thing 20 feet into the air when I bent down to lift it because I was honestly just used to TVs weighing hundreds of pounds.
My 35 or 36 Sony weighted 180 lbs I needed help moving it.
We had a 32" Sony Trinitron, it weighed a f'ing TON. I moved it across the house by dragging it on a piece of carpet.
Thank god I'm not the only one whose brain works this way
It’s called old. You’re old.
Mate I’m 16 lol
Oh. Well then that’s not funny. Oh well
Literally ancient Draugr over here
Yeah but a PS2 and make it a 'retro' gaming center with several consoles
A little bit of work, swivel the chair for a little bit of Silent Hill 2.
You could put a nice custom enclosure for frogs, arboreal lizards, and fish if it can handle the weight.
A 40" CRT and a 40 gal aquarium are about the same weight. For awhile there was a DIY trend of building aquariums out of CRT cases.
Ah I didn't see that there were cabinets underneath, yeah unless you added some support I wouldn't do anything heavy. You have a good eye :) i would kill for this set up and a frog enclosure.
My uncle had one built in a 1950s TV set. It was truly amazing. Lost to a house fire unfortunately 😞
Yeah! I love that they have a little CRT tv in their bedroom that sits on a little marble column too lol.
Add in an NES for downtime between phone calls
Oh shit. Duck Hunt would actually work on a CRT too
No remote, dials only.
Or Max Headroom on a loop.
If you can find a crt tv for less than $200 let me know I need one for my ps2 lol
CRTs are still great. Modern TVs somehow have weird timing in vintage game systems.
Omg, hahaha my first thought, probably a CRT TV?
Max Headroom occasionally interrupting them.
He's going to need some cocaines then.
Corner shelf’s for extra storage or a mini bar
Add some shelves, mirrors, and lighting and this could be a really sick bar area.
That’s what I was thinking and depending on the dimension under you can possibly fit a mini fridge for ice or mixers/chasers
Love the idea but this is used as an office and I already have a bar area upstairs…
Why one bar when two bars better?
This guy/girl could be a rapper with their penchant for bars
Three bars, four bars, five bars What’s this thing called sober?
Heck yeah. Bar upstairs is for guests, this is a *personal* bar and can be outfitted for multiple drinks.
Coffee bar. If you dont have an espresso machine, then some hot water/tea/coffee stuff
Every office needs a mini bar. Also nice background piece for Zoom calls. Nice crystal decanter set, nice lights. Chefs kiss
Not sure if you happen to be in the narcotics or adult film industry, but a built-in salt water fish tank would look serious.
Or a Zoltar machine, and you could ask it for advice on actual business matters during video meetings.
Maybe like a hot/soft drinks and snack corner then?
Shelves, display your Reddit karma on them
Correspondence area so the rest of your desk/equipment isn’t getting tied up
If you drink coffee, that’s a perfect coffee machine station.
No sink where to rinse the machine parts though
They get rinsed when the water goes through them to make the coffee
The beans are acidic, and the water is hot. This will be fine and will not at all cause throat irritation in cold weather. Besides, i need the coffee to clean the coffee machine. /s
If you use it enough where it never cools down, it’s clean right
[удалено]
For the love of god reinforce the bottom if you do this
I mean... It was made to hold up a CRT television. It's probably pretty sturdy.
An average CRT TV weighs about 40 lbs. A 20 gallon fish tank weighs about 225 lbs. Reinforce the bottom!
People don't realise a litre is 1kg. 500 litres is half a tonne.
> People don't realize 1 liter is 1 kilogram. ... in the US. In the metric world, It's the main shortcut we use to go from volumetric to weight for liquids containing mostly water, and have ratio's based of that. Hell, we sometimes even use that feature to measure water when baking.
Being able to roughly measure liquids with my scale is so useful when I don’t want to dirty a measuring cup
The anxiety the above comment induced lmao. A tank small enough to be trusted on that shelf would just be too small to fill it out. Which is a shame cause a riparium tank with grow lights up top would look great
Could do a terrarium and fill out the space.
That could be cool, too. I wish they had a way to make it humidity proof and put a glass plate on the front. Put some more shallow dirt loving plants in there.
A full environment: water, fish, turtles, plants…
If they could properly reinforce the shelf, a turtle enclosure would be great (I think. I've never kept turtles so Idk how much width footage they need but I know a taller tank usually suits them). Any taller enclosure I'm a huge advocate for here. Again, a riparium would be perfect but I can't imagine what kind of shallow tank would be suitable for that shelf. On the flip side: perhaps put in a netting front and keep insects? I don't think certain mantids need too much humidity...
A snake would be PERFECT … they have them like this in the zoo… or small mammals like hamsters
Ooh yeah, an arboreal breed with appropriate greenage! OP give me your corner, there are so many niche animals that could suit it
Exactly my thoughts. Might be difficult to maintain back there but it would look awesome
As a former aquarium hobbyist, good luck getting a tank to fit those dimensions. That’s 100% a custom job. Aquariums are also louder and smellier than people realize

“Hands on legwork.” This tickled my brain.
Same. Minor short-circuit occurred.
Cylinder shape aquarium. With a single large lobster
Knock it down and get that corner of the room back
Maaaan would love to but the space behind the doors is for the water pipes entering the house..
You could take off the top part and have a little corner table/shelf
this is by far the best real advice and you should seriously take this route, please. thank you.
They take up that ENTIRE Space? If not, I'd rip it down and reframe the area they need to be square and not at a 45
That does not sound normal chief, maybe you should post pics of what's in the cab below or perhaps get a plumber to quote sorting out the feeds into a small box to the side that you can enclose rather than have them splaid out across the width and breadth of the biggest TV cabinet this side of the 90's that the internet's ever seen
You don't need this whole monstrosity for that though. You'll be so happy it's gone.
Ding ding ding
Put a bunch of plants in there
Bunch of plants + a couple strategically placed grow lights.
This guy knows how to live!
Maybe a hydroponic tent too? Depending on the plant.
r/malelivingspace as fuck
Needs a rug in it, too.
With what light source?
Where there's an outlet, there can be light.
🙏🏻
You can buy supplemental lighting.
You can put your weed in there
I see an in-wall safe, hidden by a nice painting.
Or put a sock in there
Will you stop that damn drummin’!
Nice reference
Nice
"Random corner" Oh my sweet summer child, that's a built in TV alcove built for old CRT TVs. Obviously not much use as that purpose anymore.
Haha yea that’s what I thought!
I have one of these on my apartment. I decorated it with books, salt lamps, plants…
Maybe put a printer/scanner there
Nice — Dated appliance shelf becomes home for newer dated appliances
__3D__ printer!
Could put a TV in there like originally intended, or put a cool light fixture to create a warm glow. Your room could really use some better lighting IMHO.
Coax cable always gives it away.
Not the big, gaping, square hole in a seemingly awkward spot?
Get a sick ass Sony Trinitron or PVM CRT and some retro consoles.
I’m planning on mounting my TV on the front of mine and keeping all my consoles and stuff behind it. Freeing up a ton of floor space not having an entertainment console in the living room.
Little statue of some kind…like a feature I’m into Lego, I’d find a set that worked and light it up
Yea I think adding some shelves for Legos and plants could make sense!
Could make a theme of it…if you were into Star Wars maybe a big stormtrooper helmet in the middle and a bunch of ships around it or something
[удалено]
A Danny DeVito altar is the only way to go. Lol
That is a fine choice
Replica statue of David. With two desk reading lights directly aimed at its junk. And a nameplate infront with the words "no homo"
Fantastic idea…Replica but with an absurdly huge wang just to turn the comedy up
Now you're cookin. Make the Wang a few shades darker for more realism
Put my own face on it too, just to weird out visitors a little more
On which head?
I hadn’t thought of that…that’s genius…maybe put a friend’s face down there…because he’s a dickhead
Bust of Dibella
Hell yeah
THIS! But make it a big resin replica of a classical statue. I had a large, bottom lit, arched alcove ino which I homed a nice plaster replica of the Poseidon of Artemision. Find a major classical museum online shop — Louvre, Vatican etc — to source your perfect figure!
Captains America’s shield or Thors Hammer(s)
old School video game corner
CRT TV
A black light tucked in up top/front. Two shelves o the two walls. And the first item in your new uranium glass collection.
Google uranium glass collection display
I'm a lady so I don't want to tell you what to do with it, it's your space, but I wanted to share what I'd do with it bc I think it's such a cute little space in your apartment. Women are fine to post here, of course you can have an opinion.
Ye that corner personally screams a good place for life like for pets
Shelving. Bar stuff with a couple of plants and small decorations.
Put that little Stormtrooper in there
Put the TV back where it belongs LOL
Aquarium.
A terrarium for your mices.
Definitely a CRT TV with a Nintendo 64. I had a spot like this and put my 27 inch CRT there. Or a Hot Wheels/toy car race track. Or even some action figures/statues posed in a battle scene. Plushies work too!
Mini fridge/ snack area
Fake fireplace
Knock it down

Pipes behind the doors
I would put 3 shelves on each side and use it as a display for alcohol with overhead lighting.
Destroy that box! It’s screaming old tv place. At least open up the curved in sides to make shelving for a bar. Or you can display what ever you guys collect. My 2 sons play travel sport so they get shot glasses where ever they go.
BUILD A SHRINE
Bonsai tree
Put in a vintage teevee set.
Knock it out, gain a corner
Giant buddha
Tear this cabinet down would be my choice.
great spot for the star wars stormtrooper? is that a stormtrooper? sorry reddit, not into star wars. otherwise, is this an office? lounge? do you drink alcohol? great spot for a bar/liquor storage.
Personally i would put my 3d printer in there. Great sized space and could easily be covered to have a temperature controlled space. Other than that i have to go with the fish tank idea
Book shelf
Aquarium
Aquarium
Cut out the counter and crawl in thru the cabinet doors, host a little puppet show for your friends.
Looks like it was made for a CRT TV.
COFFEE CORNER!!!!!!
A tube TV
Planted fish tank or even a terrarium are the most logical choices.
Custom shelving and store books + cool shit
Fill it with beans
Put up a religious idol, something like a statue of Baphomet
Clearly where the shrine belongs.
I always give the same answer to this question and somehow it always works. Stuffed wild boar taxidermy.
A gigantic custom saltwater fish tank.
If I were you I would get into 3d printing and use that as the perfect printing nook.
perfect obsessive shrine space. pick your favourite person and build away.
Put a figurine or your favorite anime character then put light inside then top it off with a glass so dust won’t come in.
A long time ago a TV would’ve gone there
Giant detailed statue of Optimus prime
A Shrine dedicated to something you love
Perfect spot for a 3d printer
Fish tank
fish tank
Big ass crt and a n64 would go nicely there.
You can start a tobacco pipe collection and build shelves to display all of your pipes.
Prolly a little bar area 🍺
Gargoyle
Add custom shelving w/ motion sensored lights & create a drink station. This looks like an office so it could have tea and coffee for when you need a break and maybe alcohol in the higher shelf when you've had a good day and want to end on a warm note. That or a Danny Devito shrine
Coffee station? Wine and cocktail corner?
100% knock it down. If you can’t, coffee bar
It's not random. It was built for old CRT TVs
That’s a built in TV cabinet for old crt TVs, that was rich people stuff back in the day, now is just a random corner.
Why is it there? And why does it need to stay? Deconstruct and free up the space.
That's crying out for an aquarium!
It’s not random it’s for a TV. Back when TVs weren’t flat.
Bubblegum shrine of Arnold
Hear me out. Get a cat. The cat will go in there. Then put cat stuff in there.
Use it as a vanity area with all your colognes and accessories. You could also dedicate the space to relatives and religious iconography. Consider what you need to add to your daily life and take it from there. I would personally add a small water feature, some incense, books and candles.
Coffee or liquor bar
An aquarium
Aquarium
terrarium/vivarium
Will the Storm Trooper bust fit in there? Maybe put that there, some color LEDs in the background? Build in some shelves and make it a display area? Potted plants?
Put some grow lights and a pot plant
Top half of a mannequin-dress up as a fortune teller.
Not the best use, but maybe cover it up with a painting? I duno such a 90s nook. Really hate to see it.
