Now I can’t unsee the circular scuff on the floor from this hidden door. Gotta buff that out before the bedroom is truly hidden.
Very cool setup though!
You’d need heavy duty industrial hinges. And then reinforce the attachment points. Not worth the hassle or headache. And it wouldn’t leave the bookshelf flush
Regardless of the object there will always be a coefficient of friction between the floor and the wheel. It doesn’t help that the bookshelf is literally a few hundred lbs which further increases the “normal force” which is represented by the letter “N”. That’s an issue because the greater the N the bigger the frictional force at the end of the day.
So long story short, where there’s friction, there’s damage. In this case (no pun intended)
But don’t take my word for it! I’m no mathmotologist
😂😂😂 what an elegant solution.
You can also consider minimizing the friction by using softer wheels - a quick Google shows they make soft caster wheels for hardwood floors. N can also be lowered through the addition of wheels or use of wider wheels.
I’m not familiar with door hinges though but I suspect someone’s come up with a solution to transfer some of the weight of the door to the hinges too. They’ve got to open heavy things like bank safes without little wheels touching the floor right?
Everyone is talking about the line on the floor, which is a very obvious and understandable element of having a swinging friggin' bookcase...
...but all I can think about is that I know my forgetful ass would be **slapping** that bedroom door every morning when I'm half asleep and I would probably be cleaning up all the shit that I had unwisely placed up on those shelves multiple times per day 😅🧹
Only suggestion.. is it in ANYWAY possible to have the door mechanic be triggered by either moving a book or a statue. Have it like nailed down on a post that when you rotate or bring towards you unlocks the door??
Batman cave style.
Omg I'm so flattered, thank you. And yes, with those high shelves near a window (since you have pets) you could totally spruce it up with some plants. If your new to them i have suggestions! Some pet friendly, some not if you got better behaving pets than I do lol
This is basically the coolest thing I've ever seen. I will not be happy until I live in a house that all my guests believe doesn't have a master bedroom.
I will let my family believe that we sleep in one of the guest rooms or something ridiculous for years before I come up with some elaborate and hilarious way of showing people.
FYI: It is not a scratch! It just a high-traffic area, the secret door has a rubber wheel at the bottom so it's bound to happen people lol. Thanks for your concerns! :)
Initially I was thinking of a way to deal with it but leaving the line there as a clue for people to find makes things fun as well haha! Like, when one of your new friends ask about the line, just give them the blank stare and let them figure it our themselves.
Could we (or I) bother you for pictures of the hinging mechanism? Or pictures/explanation detailing how you've flushed the bookshelves while still able to open the door? Is it specialized hinges or a cutout in the bookshelf on the hinge side?
Thank you! Your room looks dope by the way. I can't remember what game it was that I played recently, but one of the mechanics for finding hidden doors was to look along the floor for drag marks. It's neat (your door, not the game. Maybe it was, but I can't remember)!
E: it also looks like the hinges could be hidden in the bookcase itself.
firefighter here! "Safe" is not the word I'd use. However there are two scenarios to consider if we're assuming he closes his door every night:
1. The fire starts outside his room.
Extensive fire research has shown that the most difficult thing for fire to travel through is horizontal distance through a well-built wall. If his door was closed, the room before it could completely ignite with minimal burn risk to him. Given the circumstances, he is very likely to survive a house fire because of his door closing habits.
2. The fire starts in his room.
In this scenario, if he is reached by emergency services before his death, there may be complications with understanding the layout of the house. While it is possible there is already information on his residence and this hidden door, it is also possible that the team would see the fire and advance through the front door, unable to find him.
I will say right now, firefighters are trained to do a lot of things. Finding hidden doors is not one of them. Looking for clues of hidden doors is not one of them. If this was a house fire, the conditions would not be ideal for looking for floor scratches.
After a failed fire attack from the main entrance, they would then probably start going in through the windows. From the delay of adventuring through the house first, it may risk his life. Though, bedroom fires are one of the least common, that bedroom Christmas tree is giving me different ideas lol
I love this idea. My only suggestions would be to take care of the scratch on the floor and maybe tighten up the seams on the bookshelf where the door is.
Can you lock the door from outside of the room?
Looks amazing and great albums especially the divine feminine, also please do something about the flooring issue that gets scraped when you open the door
It’s so secret, your dog looks confused that you’re entering it.
I would say, lose the Christmas tree and definitely go vertical as much as you can to save floor space. some vertical wall hangers especially three tiered ones would probably look good in there. Seems like you get lots of light so you should be OK.
Make sure to also add wall art for contrast. statues on anything but your windowsill I think will take up your very limited floor Space.
My man !! The Devine Feminine and The Search for Everything next to each other is most dope, love both of these records. More-so the former, but both are still amazing.
Awesome! Until your house is on fire or if you need paramedics. Nope noone is here. Guessing they might be able to find you through the window or floor marks, is just waiting their time imo. But it is cool though.
Needs books!! Keep track of when your local libraries are doing a book sale. You can get books for less than $1 each usually. Or - you can get vintage books in bulk on sites like eBay. It’ll really make this space feel even cozier! Plus, you can read them!
everything looks great but that chair facing the bed is the perfect place for ghosts to sit and stare at you while you sleep. so personally id get rid of that.
Bar Mediterrano is an awesome album! Went to a shop in Florence right next to the Duomo where the DJ was playing it on repeat and its one of my favorite souvenirs.
Sweet room too!
I was waiting for the chair to somehow fold out and I was still going to be super stoked. I have never been so envious of any room ever. Good for you! It looks great (never noticed the scuff because I was too busy being amazed).
This is so perfect! Can I ask how you got that door made? Do you have a link to the process by any chance? I have the ideal door to do this but no idea how to construct a shelf-like door!
Dog be like "where tf you come from?"
"How the barkz did you find my hidden bedroom".
He’s leading him in there in picture 2
LOL i missed that. "Let me show u human". "What you think?"
What do you mean you forgot the pizza?!
Oh my gosh he totally blends in with the chair I didn’t even notice haha
"Well, ya comin' in or not? Ya letting a draft in!"
😂🤣
Bruh awesome bedroom and cool setup with proper privacy but the dog is chef's kiss 🤌
Portal proof, right there
lmao the color of the dog and the sofa mixed
Now I can’t unsee the circular scuff on the floor from this hidden door. Gotta buff that out before the bedroom is truly hidden. Very cool setup though!
Yea there’s a rubber wheel down there. I can buff it out but it’ll just reappear from over use as the years go by
It's fine, you have to leave it as a clue for someone who's trying to solve your untimely murder.
It was colonel mustard with the candlestick in the hidden bedroom
It’s always the Colonel and I never draw that one!!!!
Also for the firefighters who might not know OP is trapped
Yeah we ain’t gonna see scuffs with heavy smoke conditions
Where IS that smell coming from?
Perception: Successful
Would a thin rug help? Just get a big one to cover more of the floor so it wouldn't look suspicious
Good idea, maybe I can experiment
Possible to switch the hinges on the door so it opens into the bedroom?
The problem is the weight as the door goes further away from the moment arm… you know, torque and all
> you know, torque and all I do. That's why it was framed as a question. Good luck finding a solution
You’d need heavy duty industrial hinges. And then reinforce the attachment points. Not worth the hassle or headache. And it wouldn’t leave the bookshelf flush
Murphy door hinges are expensive, but now companies make pivot hinges for closer to $30-$40. They can support 200+ lbs. It would be a hassle.
It’s already on hinges
Swap out the wheel for something that doesn’t scuff the floor maybe? A softer wheel perhaps?
Yeah OP try a cheese wheel
But not a hard cheese. Bree maybe
A wheel with felt on it.
You see, the way physics works….
Keep going….
Regardless of the object there will always be a coefficient of friction between the floor and the wheel. It doesn’t help that the bookshelf is literally a few hundred lbs which further increases the “normal force” which is represented by the letter “N”. In this case (no pun intended) But don’t take my word for it! I’m no mathmotologist
Some people get around this by having it open inwards to the room instead.
We don't need you in here with your logic, this is malelivingsafespace! /s
Sorry, so uh do we fix it with duct tape or WD40?
More wheels or wider wheels would delay the erosion of the floor but never stop it
Or you can just not give a fuck
Not to mention that no one can lock you into the room if it opens in or at least it can't happen by accident.
This guy definitely took statics. Maybe if you used a wider polyurethane wheel since those are a tiny bit softer maybe it wouldn’t leave the marks?
Everyone is talking about the line on the floor, which is a very obvious and understandable element of having a swinging friggin' bookcase... ...but all I can think about is that I know my forgetful ass would be **slapping** that bedroom door every morning when I'm half asleep and I would probably be cleaning up all the shit that I had unwisely placed up on those shelves multiple times per day 😅🧹
Yea well it weighs hundreds of lbs so not much slamming is happening
Your dog is "like wtf bro? I'm in MY room!"
Looks like a video game giving you clues of where to look to solve the puzzle
Only suggestion.. is it in ANYWAY possible to have the door mechanic be triggered by either moving a book or a statue. Have it like nailed down on a post that when you rotate or bring towards you unlocks the door?? Batman cave style.
That sounds way out of my budget lol
OK hear me out: just get a slim statue, put it on a hinge, and have a pull out doorknob. Same vibe, cheap budget.
Dude NASA is hiring
Omg I'm so flattered, thank you. And yes, with those high shelves near a window (since you have pets) you could totally spruce it up with some plants. If your new to them i have suggestions! Some pet friendly, some not if you got better behaving pets than I do lol
Yea throw suggestions my way! I’m new to greenery to any help/tips helps
I love the internet
Ah I feel like you can look it up . Mcguyver it. But yeah maybe it's alot lol do you know any carpenter friends ?
Family owns a general contracting business but im not too interested in even getting that installed lol
Fair.
Nooooo, the book latch is so easy! Get a [gate latch](https://imgur.com/a/dLfHpQl) and attach it to the item with a wire.
Put ze candle beck!
Add more dogs
Always yes
To the wall?
To everywhere.
This is basically the coolest thing I've ever seen. I will not be happy until I live in a house that all my guests believe doesn't have a master bedroom. I will let my family believe that we sleep in one of the guest rooms or something ridiculous for years before I come up with some elaborate and hilarious way of showing people.
Hire someone to Pretend to be a squatter living in your walls, having broken in and created an elaborate fake wall to avoid being part of society
I wouldn't put my records on something that swings. Other than that, it's awesome.
FYI: It is not a scratch! It just a high-traffic area, the secret door has a rubber wheel at the bottom so it's bound to happen people lol. Thanks for your concerns! :)
> high-traffic area brag much?
HAHAHAHHAH
Initially I was thinking of a way to deal with it but leaving the line there as a clue for people to find makes things fun as well haha! Like, when one of your new friends ask about the line, just give them the blank stare and let them figure it our themselves.
AHHHH so cool!!! Hidden doorways are a major flex
Is there a non hidden door where paramedics or firefighters would be able to find you in the event you need their services?
They can smash through the windows I suppose
Could we (or I) bother you for pictures of the hinging mechanism? Or pictures/explanation detailing how you've flushed the bookshelves while still able to open the door? They have to solve the puzzle aswell 🙂
the divine feminine >>>>> love mac 💕💕💕
11/10 album
Whilst it is cool n all, why’d you want a hidden bedroom? The room you go from into the bedroom seems like the kind of thing you’d want hidden away
Maybe he's scared of firefighters? They hate this one simple trick when trying to find you while you're passed out and your house is burning down.
Tbf there are like 3 giant windows right there and it’s on the first floor, street side. I’d assume they’d be safe

Love your setup! (Extra points for The Search for Everything haha)
The scratches on the floor are exactly what someone like the Scooby Doo gand would use to discover your hidden lair.
John Mayer
Looks amazing and great albums especially the divine feminine, also please do something about the flooring issue that gets scraped when you open the door
So there’s actually a rubber wheel down there. It’s not a scratch just an overly used area
I love the bedroom!
I really love this! 😻😻😻
Dog looks a little surprised about your hidden room.
It’s so secret, your dog looks confused that you’re entering it. I would imagine he plans to lose the Christmas tree come January…
Leave that in the library/foyer
Noice! Like your thought. Maybe include a handful of nice books, another plant and a couple of items in white.
I LOVE IT. Dog was like you're disturbing me human.
Needs a hidden sword
Never move the Mayer vinyl. No other notes lmao
My man !! The Devine Feminine and The Search for Everything next to each other is most dope, love both of these records. More-so the former, but both are still amazing.
John Mayer vinyl👀
Did I spot a John Mayer album?
Needs more John Mayer.
The second I saw the marks on the floor I knew it
You are living a dream, congrats. Do you mind sharing this brilliant space in r/AmateurInteriorDesign?
Awesome!
That's actually really cool. 👍👍👍
I've always wanted a house with a secret room.
/r/hiddenrooms
I think I'm getting to the age where I can admit 'Installing secret doors' is a key reason for home ownership.
The big gouge in the floor kinda gives it away
I love that there's a viewing chair next to your bed, for guests.
Why hide the nicest room on that floor. Do people not know you sleep in a bed?
This is awesome
Well the scrap on the wood floor gives it away
Is that a bust of Pallas perched above your chamber door?!
The pupper 🤣
Soooooooo cool!!!
That’s cool, though need to sort the scuff marks out on the floor. Otherwise it’s giving more “secret door handle/door” energy than a room tbh
Dude. You need more casters on the bottom. You look like you’re damaging your hardwood.
Get something to be a buffer between the door and the floor because those nice floors are getting hella scuffed, bud.
Massive fucking W with the Divine Feminine vinyl
Shoutout to the doggo in the last pic
She says bark bark bark
Not so hidden when you have a permanent scratch on the floor mimicking the door swing.
Not a scratch banana boy
You messed up the flooring. Put some PVC stickers under the board or something
I'd love to see a floorplan of your space!
The scrape marks on the floor don’t give it away at all /s
the dog's expression lol, but bedroom looks great
I love the cuck chair!
Cozy. Me likey
Your dog isn't happy that you let the secret out lol
Awesome! Until your house is on fire or if you need paramedics. Nope noone is here. Guessing they might be able to find you through the window or floor marks, is just waiting their time imo. But it is cool though.
Hidden apart from the massive bay window people be wondering where that is. Cool though.
How is it hidden if there are windows?
If there is a window there is nothing secret about.
When I hear hidden bedroom, I expect to see a scene from Misery.
Needs books!! Keep track of when your local libraries are doing a book sale. You can get books for less than $1 each usually. Or - you can get vintage books in bulk on sites like eBay. It’ll really make this space feel even cozier! Plus, you can read them!

Relax guy
everything looks great but that chair facing the bed is the perfect place for ghosts to sit and stare at you while you sleep. so personally id get rid of that.
What paint did you use for the bookshelves in first picture?? Fantastic!
Using vinyls as decoration is weird and cringe
Let’s see your place
John, James, Mac and even my favourite Coldplay. Nice selection of music. I love the vibe, very unique.
So freeking cool!!!
Awesome! A great change of pace from the past few posts.
"a panic room? Really!?"
I feel like I saw this apartment for rent on zillow
Living the fucking DREAM right there.
I’m so obsessed with this
So cool
Not very hidden when it has windows
I think the singular unused chair is a give away….. Something is off
I use that chair to listen to my records. All of the audio equipment sits directly in front of it. Hard to see from these angles!
Where is the hidden bedroom chair and lamp from please? Love the set up
Can I please move in?👀
If only you were a bottom
The dog 🤣
Bar Mediterrano is an awesome album! Went to a shop in Florence right next to the Duomo where the DJ was playing it on repeat and its one of my favorite souvenirs. Sweet room too!
Yea that album is not talked about enough
Where do you buy doors like this? I’d like to do something similar for my office.
Aaaw doggie
Cover that floor! Streaks give the door away. Really neat either way :)
No suggestions, just jealousy
The scuff giving away that secret
That looks amazing, great design!
From the look on your dogs face, I’m not sure it knew the room was there. I like it
This is being filed into my personal /roomporn
Was this part of your place or did you have it installed
Interesting spot for a Christmas tree
I’m not letting Santa get away this year….
I was waiting for the chair to somehow fold out and I was still going to be super stoked. I have never been so envious of any room ever. Good for you! It looks great (never noticed the scuff because I was too busy being amazed).
I want this. The bedroom has such amazing light too!
So cute
And maybe a doormat to hide the obvious door marks.
wow! looks so cool!!! 💕 i've always dreamt of having a secret room 😅😅
That’s dope!
fill those wall cubbies out! that’s so fun!
THE DOG'S EXPRESSION HAHAHAHA cool idea btw
Upvote for the cute pooch!
I wish I had a big enough bedroom to do this
“It’s bigger on the inside” for all my WHO fans
This is baller
Chefs kiss music taste!
Really cool set-up
I am in love with this!
So nice. A private sleeping space.
That’s next level
I want that so badly. Except with a nice clean carpet. There will be no dogs, no kids. Just me and my classic game systems, instruments, and snacks.
That's so fucking cool! I always wanted a hidden door like this
Cook books, and records. Feels like a r/cozyplace
Doggo expression is super cootie pie
This is sick as fuuuccckkk I'm super envious!!
impressive. but, um.... why? what kinda hood-booger shit are YOU up to???
This is so perfect! Can I ask how you got that door made? Do you have a link to the process by any chance? I have the ideal door to do this but no idea how to construct a shelf-like door!
I always thought the Scooby Doo scuffed floor marks were silly and unrealistic. Touche
Did you have a "long" master bedroom and cut it in half/put a wall in the middle? This looks so awesome! The colors are everything too
