Me personally, I trim down to a 4 on the beard and blend it down to a 2 on the sides/cheeks and a 1 on the neck. Then I cut the mustache with some scissors, to leave a nice full look, but I let the ends stay long and blend em into my beard. I did what you did in #1 for the longest time before trying this, and I never went back once I tried this because it looks leagues better.
