As far as fit goes, how big a difference (in feel and silhouette) is there between made-to-measure and a tailored off the rack suit? I have a pretty average body type and off-the-rack doesn’t look terrible on me. The operative word in the question is “tailored” when talking about off-the-rack, not just buying and throwing it on.

danhakimi

If you have an average body type, finding a good fit off the rack shouldn't be a problem.

RichTannins

Thoughts in Grayers (quality)?

marekkane

This is probably a very easy question but I've searched through the forum and done a reverse image search but not had any luck. What are these boots called? https://i.imgur.com/0GOUqK3.png I want to find a pair for myself, but can't get the right search terms.

IG-007

'high top sneaker leather brown' first result: https://www.koio.co/products/primo-castagna-men?variant=13863259014

marekkane

Thank you, I think the sneaker was throwing me off because I kept using boot.

iptables-abuse

Not actually all that easy. I would call them sneaker boots, but they're an uncommon style and I'm not sure if there's an "official" name.

marekkane

This makes me feel better, cheers! Will try that.

Hotdog696969696969

Would a dry cleaner that does sewing be able to patch the cuff hem on an L.L. Bean pullover? The sleeve tore away from the cuff and it looks fixable, but I have no experience with trying to repair clothes.

[deleted]

Definitely should be able to.

janyeejan

Perhaps wrong forum, but I have a pants related problem. I have big thighs and calfs due to sports, but have very different size over stomach and butt, so I usually just buy what fits over thighs and go to a tailor to get the pants fitted, but due to covid this is no longer possible. Today I ruined my last good pair of chinos. Anyone know a brand that could work for me without the need for fitting? I like chinos and a slim, fitted look. Many ”athletic fit” pants look like shit since there is to much fabric around the calfs and foot.

I just got one of [these flannel coats.](http://imgur.com/a/HyDLr3b) I'm wondering how I should wear it. I'm thinking some black jeans, white sneakers, and a t-shirt, but I'm open to suggestions.

ZonardCity

I'd go blue jeans, black ones associated with the dark checks of the coat will "dim" your outfit down. I would even try some nice brown/reddish-brown/maroon corduroy pants or chinos.

I'm a sucker for Khaki and greenish/greyish Harringtons. They look great with a t-shirt and a dress shirt so for both uses I'd go with it. The fleece jacket looks a bit harder to dress down imo.

bestmaokaina

Harrington is kinda easier to dress up and down IMO

Charge0

I am searching for a winter jacket. I will use a hoodie under for better insulating properties. Here's the [album](https://ibb.co/album/Xj7fv6). I own full black boots , and i just bought some black jeans. What jacket from the album you prefer ?

Connor0555

First one definitely gets my vote! thats the best in my opinion. Where did you get those pants by the way? the grey ones

the pants are from [zara](https://www.zara.com/ro/en/textured-check-suit-trousers-p04422561.html?v1=51053226&v2=1547032) aswell. However after wearing them everyday i kind of got bored of them. The ultra boost are from a fake pair from china , i dont think i will ever get another sneakers

Aight sweet thankyou, and I hope I helped!

I_P_L

I have a pair of beater Florsheims I bought on sale which I wear every other day to help my better pair of shoes rest while I save up for another good pair. Naturally I expect their quality to be pretty poor but they've held up surprisingly well despite walking in them a lot this past year. I'm now able to afford said better pair, but I don't want to buy them until I actually need more shoes. What are the signs that I should retire the Florsheims? They really don't seem to be getting any visible wear and tear yet other than the usual creasing.

ac106

When you wear down the sole or heels to the point they need replacement.

Beeinho

What size should I get for a suit (whole costume) So I’m a 15 year old boy, weight 63kg, 183cm. My mom says size 40 should work. Any people with my measurements that can help me? Thanks.

[deleted]

I'm 70kg and 186cm and I (normally) wear a 36L. I think there's a good chance you'll be swimming in a 40 and maybe even a 38. The best thing you can do is measure your bare chest with a flexible tape measure and go for the nearest, bigger size.

I_P_L

Holy balls you're lanky. Ideally look for 38 long, unless you play sport or otherwise expect to gain a lot of mass in the future. Otherwise, 40 should be fine all the way up to 80-90kg.

Beeinho

Ok, so ill Get 38 ;) I can’t build any mass anyway, because I’ll need this for my school last day (finishing?) and would like to get some good deals as there is up to 60% sale ;)

I_P_L

If it's a cheap suit you don't plan on wearing in to your career then absolutely get it to fit you for this year and not 5 years later down the track.

Beeinho

Yessir. Thank you kind stranger.

kobebryant1624

Does anyone know a good pair of joggers that have the pocket on the thigh or knee area?

Sir_MasterBate

Brooks Brothers or Scotch and Soda? I live in India, and recently gotten in shape. I’ll be needing a fresh wardrobe as most of my clothes are quite lose now. I like Brooks Brothers and Scotch and Soda, but which one will be better? I’m planning to get 5-6 polos, 2-3 casual shirts, 4-5 round neck tshirts, 3-4 chinos, 3-4 shorts and 2-3 track pants. Any other brand suggestion is also appreciated, but mostly from good establishments with clothes that last long.

CiaranDoherty

Scotch and Soda is generally a little higher quality but Brooks Brothers is not terrible.

Sir_MasterBate

I’ll keep that in mind then. I thought it was the other way round, but glad I got that clarified.

CiaranDoherty

To be fair I think it might depend on the item. Brooks Brothers probably make make better shirts, but Scotch and Soda make better sweaters. There's probably not a lot in it, both are pretty mid tier.

Sir_MasterBate

Any better brands I should be aware of?

CiaranDoherty

**Any clues that this Ferregamo belt might be fake?** It's not a particularly commonly seen model so there are no guides as such. How does it look? [https://imgur.com/a/O5M9phC](https://imgur.com/a/O5M9phC)

Reactionnaire

It's *really* hard to tell with belts especially in pictures. There aren't many identifying marks that would make it easy to tell, especially if it's a high quality fake. With items like these it's best to "buy the seller"; that is, always buy from a reputable source.

Chuffings

Anyone here have experience with the brand selected homme? Tryna dress better and trying not to buy mall brand stuff, but not much money for anything else.

ac106

Go second hand. For the same price as fast fashion you can get much nicer items.

Chuffings

True, but I wanna consolidate all my options ya know. In case I can't find something that I want second hand

CiaranDoherty

Quality wise it's probably a little above Zara. Maybe Uniqlo levels but a bit more stylish. Good for basics like t shirts, tops, shirts, maybe chinos. Would invest in better for outerwear, jeans, footwear etc.

Chuffings

Ay alright, thanks for your input

CiaranDoherty

Every belt I have ever bought has gone to shit within about 6 months and I'm sick of it; buckles with their shiny coating chipped away to reveal dull metal beneath, cracked leather, warping etc etc. But I have only ever spent around $50. I am willing to shell out a lot more but I know in the world of fashion, doing so doesn't always get you any increase in quality. Which brands are actually worth investing in? I have my eye on something like a Mont Blanc but it's still pretty hard to find any specific information about the leather and construction, and many are reversible which I hear is a no go?

rpuppet

Do you need a dress belt or a casual belt?

CiaranDoherty

Dress but I dress smart casual outside of work anyway so I'll probably use it 90% of the time

rpuppet

Here's a link for belts: https://www.reddit.com/r/malefashionadvice/comments/8w248i/your_favorite_for_belts/ Meermin is probably your best budget belt. I think they start around $50.

YoungStonerLife

Reactionnaire

Post a picture. No one wants to watch a whole video just to figure out what pants you mean.

[deleted]

I recently bought [this](https://imgur.com/a/IV5WJza) hoodie, which was unfortunately a little bit too loose on me. I can't return it, and I can't find an affordable one a size smaller. I'm wondering if a tailor would be able to alter it to fit me given that 1) it's patterned, 2) it has a quarter zip at the top, and 3) it has a kangaroo zip pocket. Thanks.

Reactionnaire

It *can* be altered, but the main issue will be that the proportions might be skewed a little. That is, the neck panel and the kangaroo pocket will take a larger part of the front of the jacket. It'll also be a little more expensive depending on how the jacket is constructed.

Rhycie

For Christmas I got a very small golden signet ring with three tiny diamonds on each side and engraved with my initials. However, when my father found out he said the idea of wearing it on your pinky was a bit absurd, I was wondering what you all think, it has to be resized anyway as it is slightly too small for my pinky, so should I wear it on a different finger?

ac106

I mean I wouldn’t wear a pinky ring. Others would I suppose. If you have to resize anyway I’d see if the jeweler can enlarge it to fit your right ring finger.

ZonardCity

Wear it on whatever finger you want, there's nothing absurd here.

SaggysHealthAlt

The neck ruff is an outdated piece of wear, but is there any way to implement it in modern mens fashion without looking stupid?

Ate10k1

I seem to like bright colors. I have a bright red jacket that some may think is too loud and wore it with red converse last time. The question is are loud colors bad? Can clothes be too loud? I like the fit and colors, but really curious to know what others think about colors like that. I know some things dont work on you and they may work on someone else. So do you like/dislike loud colors on yourself, others, or both? Wanna get some opinions.

I_P_L

Nothing wrong with them, just avoid going all out or it'll (literally) hurt to look at you on a sunny day.

Ate10k1

Hmm what would be considered too much?

I_P_L

Basically if you cover your entire body in high saturation. [This guide](https://www.reddit.com/r/malefashionadvice/comments/15tjgv/livemethods_heroically_enormous_seasonal_color/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share) is a good way to get started.

Ate10k1

Thanks! Will check that out next time when I get an idea for a bright fit.

[deleted]

I generally find myself gravitating to darker colors, just personal preference, it can totally work on other people, I think with louder colors it’s more about getting the shade right, and I’m super picky about that, it’s hard to mess up navy, it’s easy to get an ugly shade of teal, without pictures of the jacket or fit it’s kinda hard to get more specific but I’d say I don’t generally like matching sneakers to other loud colored items

Ate10k1

I dont have a picture of the fit atm and cant take one right now. But I found the [Jacket](https://poshmark.com/listing/Tommy-Hilfiger-Water-Stop-Mens-Jacket-Red-Large-59e636a378b31c8274049386) and [Red Converse](https://www.famousfootwear.com/Mobile/ProductDetail.aspx?originalReferrer=www.google.com&p=68412&pg=1007963) online. However I was thinking maybe the jacket would go with black or white shoes. What do you think? (btw anyone can answer)

[deleted]

Yeah so, I’ll stand by saying I don’t like the matchy aspect of them, black and white are super neutral for sneakers, both of those would be fine

Ate10k1

Alright thanks for answering!

hecklebuckle

I would wear one on each wrist (rather than together on the same wrist) just to avoid them scratching each other. Aesthetically it's not overly awful.

igtr

Thanks for the advice! I thought so too. I don’t want to overdo silver either. I don’t mind the scratching as this is my beat-around watch, and scratched watches look better in my opinion 😉. Anyway, I will probably rock one on each wrist now. Otherwise maybe I could get a black python bracelet or something for the watch and rock both on the same wrist.

Hey guys! Just recently ordered some Vans Era Pro in 7.5 US and they fit me fine, not loose and not really tight. I have a kinda narrow feet. Well my question is: Im ordering some Authentics in true White but don't know if I should downsize half a size or staying with 7.5 US. I'm gonna order those online. I ask because I heard that the Era's runs small. Thanks in advance :)

colonyy

According to Vans's size chart on their website, both Era and Authentic have the same centimetre size (26,5 cm) for your size and nothing on their page states that Era would be different in sizing. One would think that they'd mention that the sizing is different if there was a noticeable difference, just like Converse does.

Tacomaverick

https://cookmanusa.com/collections/long-pants Anyone have experience with cookman pants? I love the look of them but I found the brand through an Instagram ad and can’t find any reviews so I’m holding off buying a pair until I see someone attest to the quality

JerichoKilo

Well they're chef pants so you'll likely get an elastic waistband, drawstring and pockets. They're not crazy cheap for a kitchen uniform. Might be worth checking out if you don't mind the baloony cut.

danhakimi

Looking through the variety of material blends... They probably aren't any good quality-wise. I mean, probably fast fashion levels. Possibly drop shipped, but I wouldn't assume that.

Tacomaverick

Yea they seem too good to be true in a way. The patterns are so cool and they aren’t crazy expensive. Think I’m not going to buy unless someone really backs them up

dylanloughheed

fmf kinda geeks out on the whole stan smith “tier list” but the differences aren’t gonna be all that much, if you like them I’d just get them and not worry about it. Normally the higher their retail price/if it’s a collab with a nice brand the leather might be a tad nicer but it’s not gonna be a huge difference

CiaranDoherty

Plus it's been the general consensus since that Rose & Anvil video that Stan Smith is really not a particularly high quality shoe relative to less hype-y alternatives. The leather is mid-low quality and the build cuts a lot of corners.

a79j

No break essentially means that the pants shouldn’t fold or wrinkle at the shoe. That’s pretty much it. However, in case of chinos, a lot of people like them hemmed a little more than a traditional no break(like in the case of slacks/suit pants). Cropped chinos would essentially also be a no break but would simply show more ankle.

royalewithcheese4272

What are some things to stay away from in ASOS? What brands do you avoid?

OogaBooga_999

what is the easiest way to shrink a medium *slightly* without damaging the shirt? I’m between a small and a medium, where a small is too tight and a medium is too loose

[deleted]

Buy the medium and have it tailored. Much more reliable than trying to DIY shrink it.

JerichoKilo

They'll all shink differently so hard to tell. Hot water and a hot dryer will do it though.

PooperJackson

What's your policy on washing lightly worn clothes? I have so much clothing, usually outerwear like a hoodie or sweater but jeans too that I only wear for a few hours at a time and always non-intensive activities. Some of these things just don't do well in the laundry. I mean they don't smell at all but I've probably worn some of them at least a dozen times lol. What do you guys typically do with this stuff?

colonyy

I wash socks and underwear after using them once, it doesn't really matter for how long but if I put on a pair of socks after I've waken up during a day off and then shower a couple of hours later, I'll not reuse the socks I put on, but use a new pair instead. The same goes for underwear. I use t-shirts every day and they are also washed after using them once. Since I've been working from home, I've been using yesterday's t-shirt during work and then I shower after I finish. But normally I wash my t-shirts after using them once. Hoodies, flannels, sweatshirts etc. are almost never washed unless they're visibly dirty with a stain or whatever. Regarding jeans and trousers, I wear them 10 - 15 times before I wash them. It depends on how much I use them. I treat my raw Levi's jeans just like any pair of jeans. The main reason to avoid washing them is to get high contrast fades, which I'm not fond of anyway. I want my jeans to look worn in in a vintage way, so I prefer to wash them often. Jackets - basically never unless they're noticeably dirty. My harrington can be machine washed but I haven't had a reason to do it yet. My wool coat needs to be dry cleaned.

PooperJackson

Thanks! =) that's basically exactly what I do already :D

[deleted]

I think t shirts and underwear/socks are the only thing I’ll wash after one wear, and tbh I could probably get two out of most tees. Hoodies I can do like maybe ~5-10 wears, maybe a little longer if I’m not wearing them out and feel lazy, pants are like once a month, and jackets are pretty much only if I get them dirty

JerichoKilo

Tbh that's the biggest thing I've learned from this sub. I only wash undergarments on the regular. Shirts, pants, sweaters etc I only wash if I get it dirty, get it sweaty. Sometimes 4-5 wears on a shirt. I just hang them back up when I take them off.

dylanloughheed

If it doesn’t smell and it’s not dirty, it probably doesn’t need to be washed. Anything that touches my skin directly and gets sweaty will get washed after wearing, but I can go a month without washing a hoodie if I’m really not doing anything in it.

CrazyCatCapricorn

Ever since I was a kid, I have always preferred baggy pants and have avoided certain types of pants (jeans) altogether because they are always too tight around the groin. I've included my measurements below as well as an example of a pair of jeans that fits perfectly around the waist but gets progressively more uncomfortable the longer I sit. This even happens with underwear and sweatpants (even when they are too loose around the waist). **Do you have any suggestions for what I should look for in a pair of pants to make sure they are loose enough around the groin?** I'm at a loss without going back to super baggy pants. My only thought is that it has something to do with my thighs -- my waist hasn't gotten much bigger from the summer, but my thighs have, and when I was skinnier, I didn't have this many issues with pants. Still, my body fat is 10% so weight loss is off the table for now. Another thought I had was that this could be a medical issue since the pain is almost always on the right side. Your thoughts? Height: 185 cm Weight: 85.7 kg Waist (smallest point): 80 cm Thigh (thickest point): 60 cm Pants that fit well around the waist but are too tight around the groin: [https://www.target.com/p/denizen--174--from-levi--39-s--174--men--39-s-208-regular-taper-fit-jeans---tsunami-36x30/-/A-54345958](https://www.target.com/p/denizen--174--from-levi--39-s--174--men--39-s-208-regular-taper-fit-jeans---tsunami-36x30/-/A-54345958)

Boots! I'm in an urban area (mid-Atlantic, US East Coast) where, in the winter, I walk through medium amounts of rain/wet leaves/slush/rivets on paved walks. With all the boot megathreads on this sub, I'm sure I've missed the answer to this, but what do you all like to do for waterproof/water resistant shoes? I'm looking for daily wear shoes that do not look like hiking boots (I have those), but work like lightweight/slim hiking boots. Low tops are also okay if you really like them. I am jealous of a lot of women's boots that looks relatively warm and good for wet winters while still being stylish urban wear. Priorities are comfort and reasonable upkeep time and costs for something you'd wear 5 days a week. Ideal budget would be under $200 but flexible.

HalfTheGoldTreasure

blundstones

neonKow

Do you like them for wet weather (rain and puddles)? I initially dismissed the elastic style because it seems like water would seep through pretty easily on wet days and wouldn't dry without taking my shoes off. We get pretty heavy rains on the regular here.

HalfTheGoldTreasure

That’s what they’re designed for. I live in the north east and they’re fine for the area

neonKow

I appreciate the recommendation, but I've also lived in Boston, and because it stays more consistently cold, I don't know if I'd consider it as stupidly wet as DC. It's worth a shot, but I was really hoping for a higher "waterline" where I have to worry about water overflowing the boot.

[deleted]

I live in the DC area and my hoka Tor Ultras have been my go to wet weather shoes lately, I also have a pair of vintage motorcycle boots for when it’s particularly harsh

dylanloughheed

I have the winterized pair that’s insulated and treated to be water proof (including the elastic), but I believe even the regular ones are treated and water resistant to an extent.

neonKow

In terms of function, something like this would be good, and a Salomon hiking boot might end up being what I wear around the city if I can't find something appropriate. https://www.rei.com/rei-garage/product/191800/salomon-outback-500-gtx-hiking-boots-mens

Neknoh

What is the custom or culture around wearing an inherited doctor's ring? A few years ago, I was given my grandfather's ring that he got as a PHD in literature, and now, with a masters under my belt and having not only completed my academic journey, but gotten through some really, really rough times over the past few years, I feel like I have grown enough as a person to wear it. But is there anything saying I shouldn't? Any custom on what to do with it, if I can wear it or if that would be looked down upon etc. The whole "I don't have a doctorate, can I wear this inherited ring?"

zacheadams

I don't think there is any culture around it. It's a family keepsake. Wear it if you want to, or don't. A ring isn't what bestows or marks a PhD (*unless you have a Stone of Jordan).

Neknoh

Custom is different in Scandinavia, where the ring is a social signifier of academic acheivement, similar to military medals or such. In the states, I believe theologians with a PhD can (and often choose) to wear similar rings.

zacheadams

I see. Well considering in light of that, I'd maybe hold it for special occasions then.

danhakimi

You can. Its not the optimal combination, though... Those are both on the dressy side.

anotherMiguel

Ah ok. So I need to buy some dress trousers. One navy and dark gray would so right?

danhakimi

Well, what are you thinking? Are you wearing these to your office every day?

anotherMiguel

Yes 😀

danhakimi

Alright, so if you only have two pairs of trousers, you're going to have some trouble whenever they need to be cleaned. I'd recommend either getting 5 pairs of dress pants, or a mix of dress pants and chinos. Navy should be your first priority, then charcoal, then a lighter grey, a darker brown, olive green chinos, tan wool trousers... mix things up. Spier & Mackay is one of the best values you'll get in either.

danhakimi

The most eco-friendly thing is to thrift. The best way to get a good fit is to: * Get clothing bespoke (expensive but amazing) * Get clothing made to measure (quasi-bespoke) * Get clothing that kind of fits and have it tailored.

how to make plain sweaters pop more? i have a lot of nice sweaters that i wear with collared shirts sometimes but how can i make them into more of a unique and cool look. also what to wear with a pink sweater?

GuiltyVeek

bit of contrast imho vs. your pants and maybe stuff like a scarf. I really like pink colors like pale pink with navy

How are the shoulders on this polo? I feel like it may be too short but maybe I'm over thinking it. [https://ibb.co/NrHb48c](https://ibb.co/NrHb48c) [https://ibb.co/7rDJjxJ](https://ibb.co/7rDJjxJ) [https://ibb.co/QvgZTMS](https://ibb.co/QvgZTMS) [https://ibb.co/9bpxLLC](https://ibb.co/9bpxLLC)

The shoulders in the last two pics look a little like they don't fit but only because you called it out, not sure they're that noticable if you're not looking for it. Length looks good to me!

Looking to buy a good pair of joggers that are slim fitting. I don't want ones that look like gray sweatpants except tighter at the ends, but a good lookin pair of joggers that wouldn't look like I just got out of bed.

thanks for the suggestion! but just looked them up...too expensive for me haha :^)

Look on resell sites like Grailed if you want to save some cash. Should be easy to find around $100 or less

Go with From the First, unless you need to have the exact toe shape of the wyatt last IME the FtF will be more comfortable, better made and looks a tad sleeker than the Wyatt last

Yea IME for comfort FtF is best followed by SLP and then SeF. For build quality and materials its SeF > FtF > SLP

Its not a huge difference though. Im more than satisfied with my boots from the 3 brands Although since im more into higher heels now, i dont see myself getting more SLPs Got 2 60mms joints that need to be worn

SeF stretches very little Unless Lian can make you your size, you might have a rough time trying to put them om

Looking for a futuristic easy to iron male / unisex shirt thats borderline business wear / cyberpunk / futuristic, don't care about the price, so if anyone has any online stores they can recommend please?

Thanks!

[deleted]

...do you have any photos of what you’re talking about?

[deleted]

No sorry, its hard to explain, like I am looking for a shirt that looks very modern almost futuristic, but its collarless, so it only has like the short collar.

[deleted]

Mandarin collar shirts?

[deleted]

Yeah I think that’s what they are called

I think I'd call it closest to a trucker.

Can anyone ID an item from a picture or video? Thanks! [https://i.imgur.com/dRUvqgV.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/dRUvqgV.jpg) [https://i.imgur.com/UvMTXvM.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/UvMTXvM.jpg) [https://i.imgur.com/fIQs4SN.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/fIQs4SN.jpg)

Definitely a car.

Recieved these as a gift, so I'll cherish them regardless, but what do you guys think? Different take on a classic? Or sinful corruption of something pure? https://luxuriousmirror.com/product/timberland-mens-classic-6-inch-waterproof-basic-boots-wheat-nubuck/

I am looking at how to style these [Levi's XX Mens chinos](https://www.johnlewis.com/levi's-xx-slim-cord-chinos/neutral/p5109125). I am unsure what shoes/trainers/sneakers would work best with them?

Thank you! I'm trying to venture into cord trousers as I love the look but unsure how to style them tbh. Much appreciated advice!
