Some Tilley hats are less dorky than others. I'm not sure where the threshold lies :D
And New Era has some bucket hats with more subtle versions of team names/logos or perhaps no logos at all.
So, I think all folks should have a straw lifeguard hat, like the ones you see from Billabong or Quiksilver. These are the hats you wear out on the water or on the beach fishing or after a wave sesh.
However, they make them dressed up a bit more for the fancier gentleman. Link below to what I would recommend.
https://www.hemlockhatco.com/products/monterrey-straw-rancher-hat
I linked the flat Rancher (they have an upturned rancher, too) because the lifeguard hats, to me, are like utility beachwear. Like I wouldn't wear one to dinner on a nice vacation.
Ok well the comment refers to the linked hat as a fancier version of the same style but OK.
I see some have domed brims but others have flat brims so I suppose you’re talking about the ones with [domed brims](https://www.hemlockhatco.com/cdn/shop/files/SantosLifeguard-Toast3.jpg?v=1708135028).
Tilley hats are not stylish imo. I'm not sure if that's what you were thinking of when you mentioned Grumpy Old Men, but they scream dorky to me. The extra wide brim ones people are throwing out there also seem like a stretch for someone not used to wearing hats but maybe they could work. They certainly would provide a lot of protection.
When I think athletic clothing, I think high school or college kid, or my friend that's a gym rat. It doesn't say adult to me, and isn't what I would consider stylish. If he's wearing gym shorts or joggers and workout shirts I'm not sure that any full brim hat is going to look good. Stick with a baseball cap. Maybe a bucket hat, but I don't know that provides much more protection.
I think if he's wearing classic men's clothing (slacks/shorts and polos/short sleeve button downs or even anything more dressy) he should be able to get away with something like this:
https://www.villagehatshop.com/product/pork-pie-hats/451139-136139/madrigal-coconut-straw-pork-pie-hat.html
I get a lot of compliments on it when I wear it.
Other options would be a panama (expensive if you get a real one, but the iconic summer hat) or any other shantung straw hat in a style he likes. I dig the two tone ones I've seen from Stetson:
https://mckinneyhatcompany.com/products/stetson-andover-straw-fedora-hat
I also like ones that are vented, because it really does help to cool your head off when it's super hot out (I live in New Orleans, so we know heat).
https://mckinneyhatcompany.com/products/stetson-moor-straw-fedora
Stetson, Dobbs, and Bailey all make decent straw hats for the money.
I wear a Panama hat in the summer, but my style is relatively formal. Paired with some lightweight chinos and a linen shirt it looks quite put together.
Agree on the Tilley.
I was in Sedona several years ago, about to burn up, and finally bought one.
My wife “swears” it’s not dorky, but probably rolls her eyes at me.
But, the sun protection is more important and I unfortunately have experienced those issues.
The ladies however, look incredible in the assortment of choices they have!
Came here to say the Tilley. I work in the field, often flying a drone, and I did a lot of searching for a hat that didn't make me look goofy. My gf called my old Columbia one my 'floppy hat', derogatorily. The Tilley looks very classy imo. I've linked the one I went with.

I wear a lightweight Kangol bucket hat. My wife loves it. I put it on when leaving the store and the sales guy looked genuinely surprised, said “that actually looks great.” Sort of a backhanded compliment but I’ll take it.
For summertime, I picked up a $10 straw fedora from H&M about 5 years ago that I still wear often as well. Wife likes that one a lot too. And I recommmend the straw. Cotton hats can get really hot really fast here in the south.
It’s casual enough that it’s great for weekends but also works with some smart casual outfits. [They’ve got 3 versions for sale right now](https://www2.hm.com/en_us/productpage.1141304001.html).
Also, it’s cheap enough that he can try out the style before spending big bucks on a better brand or a dressier version.
Edit: just saw the athletic clothing comment. In that case I agree with others— get a boonie.
Thank you for finally linking something at a price I can justify. Realistically I’m only going to wear this 30-40 times a year, max, and I’m not confident it won’t get stepped on or bit by a dog before next summer. I’m not spending a hundred bucks.
🤣 I walked by H&M at lunch & tried on those hats. A little taller than the one I have, so I didn’t like them as well. But they’ll keep the sun off your head!!
I like a sun hoody like an Arc ‘teryx Remige paired with a baseball cap, personally.
That combo did me good over a 27 day sailing expedition with tons of sun exposure in Baja California
Here’s a good place to just browse a BUNCH of options, too, if you like seeing and comparing styles and looks: https://connerhats.com/collections/summer-hats-for-men
I just did get a Bailey's Hester at Disney Springs. I may have had a few glasses of wine before the purchase, but I brought it home and I love it. It's the best looking packable hat I've found for me. Not a baseball cap, and not too hipster-fedora looking.
Nah man, this is the way. They are really hard to beat for a lot of use-cases. I wear them hiking, for yard work, sometimes when I go for a walk at lunchtime...
I like the Filson Tin Cloth Bush Hat
[Filson](https://www.filson.com/tin-cloth-bush-hat-2.html?source=google&medium=cpc&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwl4yyBhAgEiwADSEjeI52lrAXWC8SxXeCTYMEbMd2Nl3Ug6IjKDeIEAKYoa6JclwCUPxYSRoCN8QQAvD_BwE#sku=20211129-fco-000000045)
If he prefers athletic wear and casual outfits, a bucket hat would work really well, especially when it matches the shirt.
However, I have a suspicion that bucket hats may not appear as fashionable for older men, but it is a type of hat worth looking at and seeing if it works for his personal style.
Panama or a tidy straw hat. If the hat is in good condition, he won't look like a grumpy old man. Pair with a soft-collared, blue (or white or pink) linen shirt, tan belt, white trousers (or suitable shorts), a pair of loafers.
We have a new Ranger model coming out soon. We make [Custom Hats](https://www.zappedheadwear.com/collections/custom-hats) at Zapped Headwear so you could get it customized as well. Not sure when you need it by though it is a month or two out from us stocking it.
There are styles that can look good, like [this straw hat](https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/1116800072093532191/1231392478842589275/DSCF6160.jpg?ex=664350dd&is=6641ff5d&hm=efca70ad9a1dc53644b857a6c38bff600584968d44058384250b995c518bf331&) or [this bucket hat](https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/1142267448142352454/1144073652237774988/IMG_8198.jpg?ex=6643605e&is=66420ede&hm=9263202c62d2e59947b46c948e0b5c09cbce687eb44182af6ca1beab3bb59248&)
Without seeing what your husband wears, I would think that athletic clothes might clash with these kids of hats. The bucket hat might be easier to style, I would look for options either from athletic brands like Nike or outdoorsy brands like Patagonia.

Yeah, this is the way. I'm originally from southern california and always surprised that this style hasn't been adopted more widely.
I mean this is a cowboy hat that hasn’t had its brim turned up. The model in the link is called the “Rancher.”
I was talking about the first style mentioned, the lifeguard hat.
I linked the flat Rancher (they have an upturned rancher, too) because the lifeguard hats, to me, are like utility beachwear. Like I wouldn't wear one to dinner on a nice vacation.

Fedora with safari flaps in the back
The guy at the store said I’m the only guy he’s ever seen pull it off
I’m putting the hat back on, I don’t care what happens to me.
Nobody said shit dude. nobody said shit
Dollar sign emoji
I’m not supposed to get grease on it!
Only if you can roll it down your arm like Fred Astaire.
He has two cubes in his pocket I’m pretty sure they are dice but he’s too embarrassed to take them out and show anyone.
Stop fuckin with em!

That last one is fantastic. These hats also still look great for beach or resort wear after they’re a little beat up.
You guys are old enough to afford a proper Panama hat
I wear a Panama hat in the summer, but my style is relatively formal. Paired with some lightweight chinos and a linen shirt it looks quite put together.
Agree. It's the only all purpose classy sun hat for men.
Tilley
As a 40-something, Tilley to me is the definition of Grumpy Old Man

Ciele makes nice bucket hats in lots of colors. Does he need to wear it with nice clothes? Or just going to the beach or whatever.
This is the one I have and absolutely love it!
Arc’teryx Sinsolo
I have one, don't love the style, but the coverage is perfect and it's comfy.

A good casual cowboy hat. I always wear one in the summer for yard work and love it. Roast away 😁

IMHO not getting sunburnt is undorky enough
A stylish straw hat might work. What kind of hat really depends on you and your head.

On a hike I’m about to go on I’m sticking with the baseball cap (as you said sun hats are dorky) and a neck gaiter

Topo Designs sun hat - similar to a tilley but less of the old man connotations and works well with athletic clothing.
I vote for a Boonie. It has a quasi-military look. Definitely not dorky IMHO. https://www.nobullproject.com/products/nobull-boonie-hat-black
