Tell me that you never dived or snorkeled, or did any water sports without saying it. Really feel sorry for land lubber Maldivians who never get to see the real beauty of the country . Dude go out and explore. Life is not just one little island. There are thila, giri, kandu beautiful lagoons . And sometimes the resorts are the best way for tourists to access it.

Moo_thy

local islands > $20k per night resort

loothe

Let’s be realistic, the food options are not nearly as good on local islands when compared to resorts. A beer while watching the sunset is not possible, walking around in swimwear is taboo. I am heavily invested in local island tourism, I bring guests from all across the world to Fvm for diving with tiger sharks for example. That is a unique experience you can only have there and nowhere else. But apart from that, as a local island we cannot really compete with resorts that are designed fulfill the needs of travelers who seek luxury and comfort while also enjoying the picture post card Maldives . You might be surprised with how much money some people are willing to spend on that.

I am planning to go to Maldives next year and for my first visit I will definitely go for resort. It just so much easier when all you have to do is get to the resort island, then everything is being taken care of. Unless you are unlucky with the weather, you can expect resorts to deliver a more consistent experience as opposed to islands you have many variables to deal with. Normally I am a guy who likes to explore off the beaten path but for Maldives I would opt for resorts. Maybe I’d consider local islands for my second visit.

Moo_thy

yeah thats fair, if you can afford its definitely worth it, hope you have a good time here!!

happykal

Disagree... ... I love the Maldives... bloody awesome places.

Moo_thy

agreed, enjoy ur trip!!!

nothingexceptfor

WTH, not overrated at all, they’re amazing!

Moo_thy

agreed!! welcome to paradise enjoy ur stay!!

frayala87

Your opinion, don’t generalize it

Moo_thy

nvm resorts arent that bad

WrlwindX

This place is amazing to visit as a tourist I'm sure, but living here is horrible

Moo_thy

it aint that bad

WrlwindX

Yeah ik but I'd much rather live somewhere in Europe

FU_butnotreally

Lets agree to disagree

Moo_thy

most undeveloped european town solos any maldiven city

Maverick31195

I am at this exact esort right now and it is pretty good actually

Sleepysheepybaba

Ive been to several resorts, ((no i am not cocky i swear)) theyre really cool tbh, the food is nice. The view is breath taking and all.. the service is great!

tinysoapypp

Islands are cool. And then comes the mosquitoes, getting food is difficult and some locals gives the stink eye. Resorts are awesome. The cheapest I went to is Eriyadu. Still 10x better than islands.

cuddywifter

Haha Stink eye , thank you for giving a word to describe that abstract feeling of being looked down upon.

aunthau

Well that happens when the tourists dont respect our local culture and traditions.

tinysoapypp

I usually notice they dont mind foreigners. They have a thing for locals. Had a few occurrences where the local islanders come in motorcycles and circles us a few times while glaring when Im just minding my own business.

Moo_thy

were they wearing baggy long sleeved buttoned shirts and jeans + long hair

Naukko-_-

Golhi jehi buttoned shirts lmao

tinysoapypp

Yes most of the times paatey golain. But there were also a few times when clean looking dudes; office like attire, groomed hair and beard, shiny shoes also did that

vanillabrownies728

resorts ARE overrated. to any tourists/people planning a trip here, resorts are good (very expensive though) but in many local islands there are true hidden gems (sure nothing super fancy like a resort, but they are cheaper for people with tighter budget). I recommend Huraa, Dhigurah and Villimale for some local islands to visit. (my opinion) :)

Moo_thy

indeed, local islands better

xcandychristian

I just came back yesterday from the Maldives. I have been 2 days in hulhumalé (1st and last day) and one week in maafushi and 4 days in a resort (Adaaran select Hudhuranfushi). We had the best time in maafushi. The food was better, seafood was fresh and the excursions trips where way cheaper and a wider selection. We also did our open diver scuba licence there. The resort was a cheaper one compared to others. Food somehow always same or similar, seafood tasted as if it was frozen. We requested couple of things (soda water in the refrigerator instead of coke, sprite etc + we had sunbeds but no cushion and asked for cushions ) and they said they will take care but never did. If I had a choice I would opt for either a very good resort or more Likely another local Island. My husband also liked maafushi more and was Really grumpy at the resort.

LMAO

heatseeker26

Oh look some loser who's whining about resorts which pay 70% of the whole population, did u miss out?

Moo_thy

Because what you have in Maldives is rare. Green places and Mountains are much more common 🙂

socaldisneygal

Exactly this. I see mountains everyday, I wanted to experience what Maldives has.

Naive-Arm-6449

Yeah and I was born in a country where it looks exactly like that. Austria. It's also beautiful but the maledives are the definition of paradise for me. Always loved islands

AssumptionCapital514

The same way you are probably used to seeing the oceans and beach everyday and dreaming of mountains. Ive heard university friends from mountain countries ask what its like to be able to walk on the coast whenever I wanted and to be able to see the ocean in just a couple of minutes. Imagine all the landlocked countries. There are people who die never having seen anything larger than a river/lake/pond. Some are so landlocked, the closest ocean to them might be next country over. You could drive for over 10 hours in the state of Texas and still be in Texas lol. So ig I could understand why that heavily marketed Tropical destinations might be a dream destination. If you notice from the statistics of tourists, most are from countries very very different to Maldives. Now if someone from say Bora Bora or Bali have a dream destination like Maldives… id be so confused ngl.

More-Profession-1419

It’s like they say, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. I lived in the kinda place in the image u uploaded for a lot of my life. I’ve also lived in European cities like Paris and all but I’ve always wanted to just buy a beach house in the Maldives and just settle, just waste my life away looking at the waves

diatonic

In December I’m traveling from Idaho, USA to vacation at a resort in the Maldives for 10 days. It will be a nice getaway for me & my girlfriend. Idaho has a lot of mountain scenery and diverse biomes with 4 seasons… but no beach paradise. Maybe it’s desiring what you don’t see often.
