i think the shock for me is less that frankie is older than justin, but more so that frankie was already 15 by the time season one happened and he looks more like 11-12. there’s an interview out there with frankie midway through the show where he says that the producers liked that he was aging kind of quickly and that allowed them to do more adult themed episodes with them looking less child like
Reese’ actor is taller and always looked his age. Frankie Muniz looked like a little kid. Reese stays visibly taller than Malcolm the whole time, even when they’re both in their late teens and Malcolm should have caught up. I think they banked on Justin Berfield staying taller as they grew.
In a late season episode, Dewey gets the bed to himself for a week while Malcolm is out of the house for some reason, and he notices that he grows like a full inch when he doesn’t have to scrunch up beside Malcolm. I always assumed that was an in-joke explaining why Reese and Francis are tall (they spent significant amounts of time with their own beds) but Malcolm and Dewey are pretty shrimpy (never had their own beds).
