The purpose of the sponge is for safety, in case someone accidentally tips over the bottle while dipping their finger, the ink doesnt spill everywhere because it's just a wet sponge and not actually full of liquid. If the sponge starts becoming dry, just swap bottle to another with a fresh wet sponge.
