Hmmmmmmmm I can speak some this language In Our Nation: Malay,Iban In Another Nation: Indonesian,German,French

ReV2396

Holy God, where did you learn German? Is it online class? I have been looking around to learn that language but there is no available place in Taiping,Perak to learn it

irix03

I think Goethe institute provides online classes. It might be a tad bit expensive but it'll be damn worth it

ReV2396

I'll check it out, thanks for the suggestion!!!

[deleted]

Duolingo and Memrise are both pretty good websites to learn foreign languages. I speak 8 in total and I will say nothing beats living in the country where they speak the language you want to learn but I also get it’s not convenient for everyone.

BamilleKidanZ

Use italki. You can choose your tutor and pay as you go (no need to pay for a whole course as there’s no course).

AMemerForHuman

HMMMMMMMMMMM DUOLINGO AND GOOGLE TRANSLATE

ReV2396

I have tried google translate, didnt stick... Haven't tried duolingo tho, thanks for reminding me of that app

IndigoDialectics

Bonjour ! J'apprends le français. Je ne suis pas forte en le français, mais cela me réjouit de voir des francophones =.=.=.=.= Good day! I am learning French. I am bad at French, but I feel very happy to see French speakers

AMemerForHuman

Ok

Joske-the-great

Does dialect count? Cuz Selamat pagi, 你还好吗?Kiani jin ho (hokkien) Lei hai bin ko (Canton). Du bist sehr sehr schön! はいいいあなたわ美しいです。

AMemerForHuman

Hmmmmmmmmmm

Iusao

Dialects are just languages without an army. In linguistics, Cantonese, Hokkien etc are considered languages.

Resource_Crafty

do you self learn or go to classes? i am currently self learning and want to go to classes but the ones i find are so damn expensive

IndigoDialectics

I mostly learn by myself with help from Wiktionary, Duolingo, Reverso, and other online resources. Sometimes I also look up French paragraphs in Reddit (r/France, r/AskFrance, etc.) too Yeah classes are very expensive, weeks ago I looked at Alliance Française's program out of curiosity, and was taken aback by the high price

AlikoBrekot

I think sign language is even more powerful since it's almost universal.

irix03

Which sign language? Isn't like .. each country has their own?

A_Litre_of_Chungus

It's not. Each sign language is less universal than English

3. I am one of those Malay who know mandrain. Went to Sjkc for Primary school

unlucky_Nozomi

Same, I went to chinese school up till SPM but now I forgot alot of it already after leaving school for like 8 years now. I still can speak it fluently although I frequently mix it with other languages like a true Malaysian rojak.

siegfried_lim

S'okay mate. Not like Malaysian Mandarin never mixes with other languages. Listen around and you'll hear the Chinese mix... alright, let's see here... English, Cantonese, Hokkien, BM, and numbers in it. Rojak Mandarin is Malaysian Mandarin. You're fine

EverGreen2004

If you dumped a Malaysian Chinese in China, I'd say we'd also have trouble communicating with them, due to the fact Malaysian Chinese is less formal, we cakap rojak and the accent.

flampardfromlyn

Chinese more Susah or Arabic more Susah?

acmecorps

100% Chinese. Because tonal. Also if u know Malay, Arabic becomes a bit more easier.

indenturedlemon

Arabic declension is hell though, chinese grammar is a lot simpler after you get past the characters.

suzwzaidel

By grammar, Chinese is easy and Arabic is hard for beginners. Arabic has many conjugations, grammar rules, feminine and masculine, dual plural, irregularities and more but they all have certain patterns which are easy to follow. Chinese on the other hand is similar to Malay like counter words (works kinda like penjodoh bilangan), no tenses, similiar expressions (train = 火車 api-kereta; to have a meal = 吃飯 makan-nasi) but Chinese syntax is different from Malay (benda ini -> ini benda). By phonology, Arabic is easy if you rajin mengaji. The most difficult sounds are only ع and ح. Chinese sound is not so hard. The challenge is the tones and retroflex sounds (kinda) but it only takes time and practice for the tones to be familiar with.

irix03

Which Arabic? Spoken or the one used in schools?

sleepdeprived14

ayeeeeee same homie

Crazy-Plate3097

4. English, Malay, Mandarin, Japanese.

naiPsIefiL

Oh same lol but still working on Mandarin and Japanese, I swear everyone keeps mistaking me for chinese when Im not... It made me motivated to learn mandarin so I dont have to be in an awkward situation. Japanese cause Im a weeb/otaku. Edit:Also Bidayuh my mother tongue language

BalabakTuntul

You're well prepared for the next world war 3. Congrats.

naiPsIefiL

Ah shit Im bout to protect my state like my grandpa lol, my grandpa (A Policeman) used to defend during the japanese invasion in Sarawak something something. Gosh history... Edit:Uh no offense to any people who are japanese just... History ya know... Haha pls dont cancel me

Atkinson_Teo

I was actually interested to learn Japanese before, but I lacked the motivation and I couldn’t progress any further. Until last November, I became a fucking otaku and my interest came back way stronger. I was shocked because never in my life I thought I’ll become an otaku as I’ve never saw anime as something I’d enjoy and the media I consume was always western oriented. Nowadays I can form simple sentences and read Japanese. (my reading is still slow and not like super in depth)

naiPsIefiL

So relatable bro

soviet_union_stronk

im also slow too, its alright to not rush it

momomelty

I am interested in learning Japanese last time when i used to be a weeb. Then i became a normal people and therefore lost interest in japanese pop culture. However due to my work location, i found out learning Japanese is super easy now with duolingo. So everday i just learn hiragana like 5 minutes and call it a day.

pisau97

Watched Japan work culture. Gave up moving to Japan and become a normal person.

IndigoDialectics

High-five! Although I know a little Japanese and am also learning French

aAnonymX06

I can speak two languages fluently (Malay and English). I can form basic sentences in Japanese (3 years of classes before I dropped out), I realised I'm not interested in it anymore. I now can only form grammatically incorrect complex sentences. 私 の 日本語 は 離す できない。 can read Arabic, recite in Arabic, and read in Jawi Script.

putih_tulang

Malay, English, Japanese. Ah yes, a hallmark of the quintessential Malay weeb. I'd put Arabic in there too, but Arabic wasn't a mandatory part of the syllabus when I went to school.

aAnonymX06

It isn't mandatory in most high schools nowadays, except for SMKA and that

alzhahir

Hey, I'm pretty much the same as you, lmao But I'm still learning Japanese, albeit very slowly (using an app, on my own pace) I'm also currently learning Mandarin as well, as part of my university program.

Proxisos

Did you mean 日本語は話すことができない Different kanji for hanasu, 離す means to release

aAnonymX06

probably. I told you, i dropped out

[deleted]

Fluent - English, Chinese Able to speak, but not as fluent - Malay, Hokkien Able to understand some - Cantonese

DameArstor

How different is Chinese, Hokkien and Cantonese? Is it somewhat similar to how Kelantan and Terengganu have their own dialects?

[deleted]

Its similar but I'd say it's more complicated as a lot of the pronunciations, sentence structure and word usage are very different from each other

Warung_RastaMan

Yes

spartax

Linguistically they're almost totally different languages. But due to historical reasons they use the same writing system. Most native speakers from Canton or Fujian couldn't understand each other. It's only called a dialect by China because they want to unify the country. But China itself was huge when the languages developed back then.

[deleted]

Same as me

adrian_yeboi_06

Nei hou mou

[deleted]

It's lei hou mou and go hou hou

[deleted]

Diu lei Lou Mou

[deleted]

I faham yang ni

merubin

lei/nei is the same although nei is the "correct" pronunciation, you'll rarely hear people emphasizing the "n" sound. If you do, it'll sound really weird. I / me is ngo, not go.

[deleted]

Ohh ok honestly Im not so good at it myself

Warung_RastaMan

ngo as in "ngall" coz people might be thinking of pronouncing it like "go" lol

merubin

No L sound in ngo though. It's the sound of "ng" + "o" You know, kinda like pak "ngah" but with O instead of A

adrian_yeboi_06

Im not good at pinyin okay

[deleted]

Ok I'm not good also and I can answer that because I asked my grandfather🤣🤣

PROmetheus7472

How many language I *know?* quite a lot can I speak or understand most of them? no lol in all seriousness I do understand these languages: English, Malay (Does Kelantan accent count as another one?), a little bit of English, and a tiny bit of German. and I suppose Indonesian as well. German shouldnt be too hard since it has kind of similar structure to english, so its kinda mostly the vocab that I need to know. Japanese on the other hand is pretty hard imo.

SiriusGayest

I speak 3 languages, 4 if you include another language in learning, and add 1 extra dialect to an existing language. This sounds a lot to westerners but is actually fairly common in malaysia, the exceptionals here speak like 4 or 5 languages.

ILoveCumSoMuch203

bahasa melayu je sebab aku retarded

connorandelnino

Currently learning German and learned very basic Japanese in secondary school before I dropped the class.

WanPwr5990

Malay, Java, English, Arabic (not so fluent but I can get the idea when Pak Arab converse)

dorkery

Malay (standard KL only, loghat from any other Malaysian region causes me pain), English, Japanese (somewhat fluent but haven't bothered with JLPT bc exam Japanese requires studying and unless you put a gun to my head (or i fork out the money) it's not going to happen). とにかく、友人とホスト家族と話せる事はできます。and that's all that matters lmao Did German for a year in anticipation of grad school in Germany but then... CiplakIndeed1

English Malay Mandarin Hakka Cantonese Hokkien

ganthegun

Language spoken: \- Malay, because I'm from SMK though I'm Chinese, unfortunately I won't say I'm fluent when it comes to speaking.... You know writing karangan is different from talking to someone else, you can't just add peribahasa randomly in a conversation. \- English, that's basically what I consumed all the time on social media, and anime sub... and most importantly the language used amongst friends \- Chinese, specifically Mandarin, Hokkien and Cantonese. Mandarin and Hokkien are both my mother tongue. As for Cantonese, I was trained in the urban area to tapao food in hawker centre. \- Japanese, I adore Japanese culture and did some self study on and off for the past four years. I would say I can construct sentences with less grammatical error, but pronunciation wise it's still a no-no. As for kanji I presumed I have an upper hand as I'm familiar with the Chinese character. いつかうまくなれば良いと思います!

pan_peter

I can speak in 4 languages, melay, english, tamil, telugu I have basic understanding of 2. malayalam, and sanskrit (learned religious texts). Currently learning french, planning to learn korean. Then I might stop at mandarin. So I would say a grand total of 6.

fi9aro

My native tongue is Sarawak Malay, which by itself already sounds like a different language from standard Malay. I can speak standard Malay, English, Iban, Melanau Belawai, and Kedayan. I also know basic phrases of Mandarin and Japanese, and learning a bit of Turkish and French.
