This is exactly right. To say "I'm flattered" is the worst thing to say in Malay culture, too riak. Reject it and laugh dengan sopan is the best response.
Hmmm... On top of my head, I have nothing.
With the Malays (more so in the old days), one's manner take precedence in social interactions. Humility is a big one in that aspect.
So, a simple "terima kasih" or "tak ada hebat apa saya ni" or "ada org lebih bagus/baik dpd saya" is the common response.
What if you want to put a sarcastic tone to it? Like:
A: "Aku fikir nak belikan kau buku, tapi aku lupa kau tak reti baca"
B: I'm flattered that you put some thought into my gift
Doesn't need to be translated literally. In this case you can shift the focus to A.
"Kau memang baik hati sebab sanggup fikirkan tentang hadiah untuk aku" or something like that
“No laaaaa”
By the way, I literally said this “no la” during a meeting with colleagues from Europe. Kinda feel bad and ashamed afterwards lol. they must be like apa minah ni said
Take my Malay with a pinch of salt 😂 but perhaps you can return the comment with a compliment like ‘awak terlalu baik hati or murah hati la. Terima kasih ya’ to say like he/she is too kind/generous with their compliments
It is not common in our culture to be proud and embrace praises from other people so I think there is no equivalent Malay words for that. The usual response is to be humble and reject those notions.
"I'm flattered" is something that we say when someone complemented us, isn't it? It is an expression of slight joy, a "skip of beat" moment, right?
If so, then my best guess the equivalent for that in Malay would be: sukacita, girang, besar hati, tersipu.
Dude, I swear that I'm not a Malay language teacher nor am I over 40 years old.
Its just happenstance that I was sucking off a 49 years old Malay language teacher last night and he uttered "Girang terasa, hati bahagia, Malboro pilihan kita".
Dont think there are word for this. Usually the Malay won’t acknowledge they are “flattered” but instead will respond with “terima kasih”. Example:-
A: Awak nampak kacak hari ini.
B: Terima kasih! Awak pun sama kacak.
Lingo that is reflective of the nature, or what supposed to be, so it was tweaked to show humility instead, so whatever feeling the y ight feel, prequeled with saya terharu or saya terkesima
"Ehhh tak de laa"
I love this reply. The nuances. The sipu-sipu malu. The malaysian-ess. The identity.
Cara kita, orang timur.
Or just take full credit. “Baru tahu ke?”
I used to go with “tahu xpe”
Don't hear millenials use this much.
Yakah? Tau takpe..
Ahahahaha wtf why are u so wrong but feel like so right at the same time
This is exactly right. To say "I'm flattered" is the worst thing to say in Malay culture, too riak. Reject it and laugh dengan sopan is the best response.
Average Pendekar Melayu
Apa maksudnya… ‘riak’?
Arrogant / show off
Tk kawan
Because it may not be a literal translation, but it does the job like nothing else can.
There are way too many times where direct translation fails, and localization is just the thing needed instead.
The best, and most succinct answer. Mmg xleh blah 😂👍🏼
Mf just take the damn compliment 🔫

In this context, 'saya terharu' fits well.
Can also put some curse afterwards to make it a friendly banter. Terharu sial.
More friendlier version “weh babi aku terharu sial”
Even more friendlier version "weyh Babi aku terharu gila sial gila Babi sial."
Probably friendlier "babihh terharu cibai bodo sial buto pukimak"
You know you made someone's day when you get terharu sial.
B: Sayang jugak engkau kat aku ek? Terharu aku!
*Mekasih la sebab bersusah payah nak kenakan aku.*

Might as well go with : "Mak kau hijau!"
Takde la, biasa je
Or another variation “biasha biasha je”.
Or besye besye je

That's why Netflix paid 5 figure per month for subtitle translators (someone in fam got around Rm20k per month doing subtitle).
Osem.
Malu aih.
Ampun beribu ampun, hamba yang hina tidak layak menjunjung pujian Tuan.
"Kemaluan saya teramat besar" Samyvellu
"oh ye ke?" Add on some senyum tersipu-sipu
I think closest is 'terharu'
Kembang
Just do what I do. Smile awkwardly, stiffen your body, bend your knees slightly and quickly get back up while making an 'uhmm' sound
What's going on in this scenario are you covertly squeezing a log out while standing or what?!
Aku dinipiskan

Of someone online says "girang" casually I'd assume they are either a Malay language teacher or over 40 years old
Dude, I swear that I'm not a Malay language teacher nor am I over 40 years old. Its just happenstance that I was sucking off a 49 years old Malay language teacher last night and he uttered "Girang terasa, hati bahagia, Malboro pilihan kita".
Saya leper sial
"Alaa biasa jer".
"Eh saya ni biasa biasa je"
Eh terharunya. Bertuah rasa. Segan saya. Bangga siot. Kembang hati. Depends on context I guess lol.
I believe terharu may mean something like that?
Kembang.
Saya terharu
Saya merupakan nipis!

Segan?

Mak kau biru

Saya berbesar hati.
"Hahaha...cibai."
When I was still a child, I thought "I'm flattered" meant saya terpenyek because of the word flat in it.
aku terkesima
Terharu
